I have too

*Rosetta nods as her head is still leaning on Mick's chest.* " Lets go break the news to the other. They should know Katie is apart of the ranch family."

*Katie fights aganst Jason not wanting to lay back down.* " Its was horrable J...I lost you, and My aunt, all my friends. I dont want to lose you guys I have to fight this." *Katie finally relaxes but dosent let Jason go as she shakes slightly.* " OH Jason...how could this happen, why?" *Finally Katie's crying stops.* " I swair Jason, I'm going to walk again. I'm going to work every day to do it. I have to." *Katie's eyes once again drift close. and her heads lays on the pillow.*

*Wes cant help but laugh* " And I am your knight in shinning armour." *As Wes cuts into his lobster tail he cant help but hold his smile. Every inch of liqued inside of him bubbles. He is so happy, so excited.* "Well I do love to cook. One of these nights I'll have to treat you out to Wes' Dinner and cook ya something good."

It's okay

Mick nods. “I know…but the future is never certain…we don’t know what’s in store for Katie yet….” He thinks for a moment, then agrees. “Things will be find here, no problem. We just have to wait for the OK to go.”

“Yeah…no, I don’t know yet.” Jason shakes his head as he talks on the phone with Reese. “Depends on how long she’ll have to stay. Hmm? No…I’m not sure. Thought I might take Con up on his offer….not right away, depending.” He pauses. “Yeah, swing by the hotel and pick those things up for me, will ya? And have Laura drop off the clothes here instead of there. I want to…hmm? ….yeah. It should be safe. Alright….yeah, call Con and tell him to let the others know… Right. I…” Jason stops his sentence short as he hears Katie. “Reese, I gotta go.” He hangs up and dashes back across the hall. His heart breaks all over again, seeing Katie sitting up and crying. Without hesitating, he goes to her and sits on the bed beside her, taking her in his strong arms. “Hey, shhh….Katie, it’s okay. You’re all right. Was it a bad dream?” He gently tries to lay her back down. “Just try to relax.”

Cindy hugs Wes tight, finally able to stop crying. As she sits back down, she looks down at her hand, the biggest smile on her face. “Wow,” she breathes. “I can’t believe it.” She looks up at Wes, her eyes dancing. “I feel like a fairytale princess.”
She laughs as the food arrives. “If you dare to claim culinary expertise as this, you can bank on doing all the cooking from here on out!”

Nightmare

*Rosetta still clings to Mick her tears starting to stop.* " I just feel so helpless Mick. Katie had her whole lige in front of her. She was so Excited and ready to go out and down things. This has to be crushing her. As soon as we can I'd like to go see her. Maybe the kids, and Angel, and Cindy can hold down the fort. We can bring BJ with us."

*As Katie lays still in bed her mind still races. The gun shot, the fire, someone pulled her out of the car but who? Katie dreams she is back at the ranch not being able to walk keeps her home bound. Looking up at a figure she asks what she can do to help only yo get a reply of nothing. "You did this to yourself" the voice tells her. " You dident even try. You gave up before you even started. You friend was there to help and you pushed him away. Now you lost him forever." *Katie shoots up from the hospetal bed giving a small scream. The tears, the emotions. Katie cant take it anymore her tears flow over. She wasent sure if she was crying for herself, for her pain, or for the pain this will put on others to have to take care of her. No matter what Katie had to get through this. She had to try and be stong. No matter how Katie tryed could couldent stop the tears.*

*Wes cant help but beam anymore. The tears now coming down his face. Slowly Wes fumles with the ring taking it out of the box and sliping it on Cindy's finger.* "Perfect fit." *Wes stands and embraces Cindy.* " Your wonderful. Thank you...thank you so much." *Wes sits back down in his char as the food comes to the table. Wes beams.* " Dinner is served I hope you like it I slaved over the stove all day." *A silly grin on Wes' face.*

Tears

Mick holds Rosetta tight as she cries, wishing he had the right words to say. "It's not your fault," he states with emphasis. "You know that. Katie made up her own mind to go, and we don't even know yet all the details. It was a terrible thing to happen, but it was NOT your fault." He slowly guides her into the other room, and eases down on the couch, still cradling her in his arms. "It's going to be alright. We're just going to wait and hear from Reese about any changes or when we can go see Katie." Mick plants a tender kiss on her head. "God's not going to let us down...we've been through things like this before, and we'll get through this too."

Jason reassures Katie with a squeeze to her hand. "I'm not going anywhere, Hero. You just sleep...rest now." As he sees her eyes drift shut, he slowly lets her hand go, letting it rest by her side. Standing up, he goes to the door to lean on the frame for a minute, taking a deep breath. This really was a nightmare. In his mind, he still sees Katie on the side of the road. He feels the horror all over again...her body mangled and bloody... He shuts his eyes for a moment, before heading across the hall to the bathroom. He splashes cold water on his face, trying to gain his strength back, but his body refuses to resist the emotional strain. Before he can stop it, his lunch comes back up, throwing him into a brief but severe convulsion before his stomach is empty. Back to the sink, he's now exhausted and tries to regain control. He couldn't let this get to him like this. Not now. Not this time. He had to stay on top of this...he had to be strong. He couldn't let Katie down.
Mustering up his courage, he goes back out into the hall, staying close to Katie's room, lest she wake. He had no plans to leave right now. Picking up a nearby phone, he dials Reese to give an update and start making plans. It was going to be a long next few days...he could feel it.

Cindy's eyes fill with tears a she stares at the ring, barely hearing Wes' words. Her hand trembles as she reaches out to admire the ring. Her lower lip quivering, she can barely speak. "Oh, Wes...." She sniffs, trying to compose herself, but she can't stop crying. She's felt so rejected all her life... ever since Derek...she'd never had hope for anything else...she'd never dreamed of any man loving her again, let alone wanting to spend the rest of his life with her. "I....I'm so undeserving..." She sniffs again, the tears still streaming down her cheeks as she fingers the diamond. "You're so.....it's so.... it's all too good to be true!" A smile makes its way to the surface, despite her crying, though she can't look up to see Wes' eyes for fear she crumble even more. "I...I would...." She stops, blinking and still unable to stop the tears, her hands shaking uncontrollably now. "I would love to be Mrs. Henson."

Would You

*Rosetta is greatful for Con confort but is happy Mick shows up when he does. Being with Mick always made Rosetta feel better. Still crying Rosetta burrys her face into Mick's shoulder.* " Mick how could this happen? Why Katie? I shouldent have let her go. I shouldent have." *Rosetta clings tighter to Mick.*

*A nurse comes into Katies room and gives her another shot of pain killers.* "There ya go doll that should help the pain. You need to rest."

*Katie trys to comprehend the words Jason is speaking, trying to let them sink in but her mind is still in to much of a fog. Katie turns to look at Jason again. The compation in his eyes, the friendship. Katie eyes slowly start to close as the pain meds kick in and make her feel drozy.* " Promise you wont leave me J. Its comforting to know your there."

*Wes smiles back at Cindy.* " Non really other than I am with the prittyest lady in the world and she deserves the best." *Wes orders there food than sits and makes small talk with Cindy. Finally the waiter brings the wine and pours it for both Cindy and Wes. Wes nods at the waiter and smiles alittle. Within a matter a minutes a small band sets up alittle ways behind them starts to play some soft slow music. Wes trys to calm his nerves as he takes Cindy's hand a serouse look on his face.* "Cindy, I know we havent known eachother for very long but I feel like Its been years. Your so easy to talk to...and you...well your just wonderful. I feel so happy when I am around you. I've never felt this way before. I feel complete..like you were the puzzle peace in my life I was missing and I enjoy spending time with you and would like to spend alot more. So...ummm...all in all Cindy.." *Wes reaches into his pocket and pills out a small black box. inside in contains a small simple silver ring with 1 dimond in the middle.* "....would you like to spend the rest of your life with me, and become Ms. Cindy Henson?" *Wes waits in antisapation for Cindy's answer a smile on his face, and the nervusness in his eyes showing. The last time he did this. It dident go well. He hoped this time would be better.*

Comfort

Con immediately gets to his feet, feeling completely helpless. He squats down next to Rosetta, putting an arm around her shoulder, knowing he’s awkward at this kind of thing. “It’s okay, Rosetta…it’s going to be okay… she’ll be alright…”

Mick suddenly appears in the door, skidding to a halt as he sees Con and Rosetta. His face is grim and tight, proving Austin had just spoken to him.

Con looks up and stands, letting Mick take his place. They exchange no words as Con backs off, leaving the two alone. He takes a deep breath as he steps down off the porch, and stuffs his hands in his pockets. Dear Katie…how could something like this have happened to such a sweet girl? It wasn’t fair.

Mick reaches down and pulls Rosetta up out of her chair, drawing her into his strong arms. “Shhh, shh.” He rocks her back and forth, rubbing her back. “It’ll be okay.”

All of Jason’s emotions scream at him as he watches Katie. His heart feels as if it’s being torn from his chest, and it takes all he has not to allow his tears to come back. It was his turn to be the support – he had to be…for her.

“Hey, hey, Katie, shh…” He puts a hand gently on her shoulder to keep her rested on the bed without trying to rise. “It’s going to be alright. You just need to rest right now and not think about anything else, okay?” He bites his lip, forcing another smile to reassure her. “We’re going to take this one step at a time…the future isn’t written yet. You don’t worry about me or anyone else right now….you just focus on what you need, and you need to rest.” Her question of who would want her now cuts him deeply. Suddenly he realizes that if given the chance, he would gladly take her place. He stares her in the eye, a soft sternness forming. “You’re a fighter, Katie, remember that. No matter what happens, no matter if this is permanent or not…you will get through this, and there is a future for you.” He grits his teeth. “And don’t you ever think someone wouldn’t want you, Katie.”

Cindy’s eyes widen just a little. “Mmm…nice restaurant….dressing up…wine…what’s the occasion?” Her eyes twinkle with mischief before she lowers them to her menu again.

Ever Again?

*For a moment Rosetta is stuned not sure what to say or what to do. The news...Was this a dream she was stuck in. A single tear rolls down her cheek making a splashing sound in the silence conferming this wasent a dream. In a horse whisper she reply.* "No....Katie." *Before anymore words can be said, Rosetta cant help but break out crying histaricly as she sinks lower in her chair.*

*For a moment Katie is stuned. Jasoon words faiding in and out of her mind. Walk, never again. How was she to protect Jason if she could never walk again, how would she be there when he needed her. Katies whole life planed out, at TJY, the missions she would go on with Jason, the work she would do, the hope to someday have an office like Jason's was now crushed. Katie turns her head and looks at Jason her eyes filling with tears.* "Jason how...why. I dont..." *Katie trys to sit up, trys to move her legs but cant relizing what Jason said must of been true.* " Will I even be able to walk again J? Or is this permanint?" *Katies voice raises alittle bit as panic starst to set in.* "How can I prtect you if I cant walk, how....how am I going to drive me car if I cant walk, How will anyone want me when I cant do anything for myself anymore..." *Katie's head falls back on the pillow as she gets a sharp pain.*

*As Wes and Cindy make it into the restront Wes tells the hostest.* "We had rezorvations for Henson please."

*The hostess nods.* "Right this way Mr. and Ms. Henson."

*Wes smiles and leads Cindy to the table.* " You can order anything you want sweetheart. Today is your day." *Wes orders a small bit of red wine for the both of them. Than scans over the menu to see what he wants. Everyone and a while looking up at Cindy admiring her.*

Breaking the news

Con sinks down in another chair an takes a moment to regroup. He himself was upset about the whole thing and wanted to go to Katie...how much worse it would be for Rosetta to receive this kind of news. "It's Katie." He looks Rosetta in the eye, trying to convey that it will be okay. "She was in an accident. But she's alive and stable, and that's the main thing, alright?" He takes a deep breath. "I'm not sure about all the details or how anything happened yet, but...her spine was injured. And...the doctor informed Jason that..." Con closes his eyes for just a moment. "Katie may never walk again, Rosetta. She's in the hospital now...I don't know for how long or anything, or if she can even see anyone yet. We'll have to get a hold of Reese again to find out details a little later."

Cindy rests her head against Wes' shoulder for a minute as they go into the restaurant. She was used to his compliments, but they still always made her blush. "You're too good to me Wes." A smile breaks forth. "I'm proud to be here with you, too."

Jason immediately tries to compose himself, stopping the tears and forcing a smile. "Hey, Hero, welcome back." He reaches over to brush her cheek with the back of his hand. "Just take it easy, okay? Relax." A short laugh comes out. "Me, sad? You just had me scared to death is all...but you're going to be alright." He moves back to resume holding her hand in both of his, and keeps his voice quiet and gentler than ever. "You're in the hospital, Katie. There was some kind of an accident, and the ambulance brought you here." He searches her weary eyes, inwardly cringing as she winces in pain. "Katie, there's something you need to know..." He swallows hard, forcing himself to master his emotions if only for this moment. He had to tell her. If he didn't, she would awake later and either panic or be told by a stranger, and he didn't want that. He knew she'd want to know as soon as possible. ...But how on earth could he tell her?
Jason runs his thumb through the palm of her hand. "You're alive, and that's a miracle in itself...and that's what you have to focus on, okay?" His eyes plead with hers to listen and to understand. "The doctor worked on you for a long time...and he said that your spine was injured." He pauses again, trying to convey comfort and reassurance through his hand's grip. "The injury caused some paralysis, Katie...and...right now you're not going to be able to walk."

The Battle Just Started

*As Katie lays asleep her mind reels with dreams, Memories. Images of her mom, and her little baby brother. Her aunt and the ranch. Wyatt...good old Wyatt. And Jason. Many throught run though of Jason. How they laughed, and talked. Joked around and shaired many special moment together. Deep in her dream Katie hears Jason's voice. "You can make it your strong." Confused Katie trys to makes sence of everything. Feeling Jason's presence and her hand in his her eyes flutter open and a small amout of pain corses through her.* "J...whats...whats going on? Where am I? Why does it hurt so much?"*Katie trys her best to smile but winces in pain. Slowly everything that happend starts to come back to Katie.*

*Seeing the look on Con's face Rosetta starts to feel panic inside herself. Something happend but to who. Con's eyes could tell no lie disaster had striked. Siting down at her desk Rosetta looks across at Con.* "What is it Con? What's happend?"

*Wes smiles at Cindy as they drive.* " Your looking pritty good yourself." *After a few more minutes they arrive at the restront. Geting out of the truck Wes lets out a long sigh trying to calm his nerves. Going over to Cindy's side of the car Wes opens the door and helps her out. How she looks raident, Wes beams as they walks arm and arm into the Restront. Lean in as they walk Wes says.* " I am so proude to have you on my arm tonight going in here." *Wes beams*

So sorry

Jason sits down numbly, hoping for the best, but bracing himself for the worst. Wyatt is on the edge of his seat to listen. As the doctor begins to explain, things don’t sound all that bad…but Jason picks up on the concerned tone and the pause, and he swallows hard. Something isn’t good.

As the doctor expresses the worst part of the news, Jason feels as if he’s had a blow to the gut. His muscles weakening, he’s glad he’s sitting down, and can barely concentrate on what else the doctor has to say. This just can’t be happening.

When the doctor leaves, Jason slowly turns his head to Wyatt, stunned. He opens his mouth to speak, but nothing wants to come.

Wyatt lets out a long breath, unsure how to take all of this in. He was so thankful Katie was alive…but she didn’t deserve this…how would she take the news that she might never walk again? It wasn’t fair.

Jason finally swallows hard and nods to Katie’s room. “Go on. I know you want to see her.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll wait my turn.” Jason looks at Wyatt, conveying that he’d like a moment alone.

Understanding, Wyatt stands and enters Katie’s room. His heart goes out to her as he sees her lying in bed. The machines and lines hooked up make her look so helpless. She appears to be sleeping, so he doesn’t say anything, but just stands watching over her for several moments, prayers running through his mind. He cared for her, no doubt, and seeing her like this was a new kind of pain. He wasn’t sure what to do with it. Though wanting to stay, he musters up his courage and turns to leave the room, knowing that other tasks must be done.

Jason is standing and waiting. “Wyatt…you need to go back to TJY and let everyone know what’s going on. And…unless your dad thinks otherwise, someone needs to call Con or Austin and have them tell Rosetta. It’s only fair she knows what’s happening.”

Wyatt sighs, relenting. “Okay. I don’t want to leave…. But if anything changes, you know to call.”

“I will.” Jason nods. “You have my word.” Only when Wyatt has disappeared around the corner does Jason dare to enter Katie’s room. He knows his emotions are being stretched to the limit, and would much rather be alone when they spilled over, than with outside company, especially Wyatt.
Katie’s still form sends a stab straight to Jason’s heart. He walks numbly up to the bed, and pulls a chair up beside it, just staring at Katie’s face, and wishing beyond all hope that this really was just a nightmare.
He leans over and reaches out slowly, more gently than he ever has before, and he takes her hand in both of his, cradling her fingers against his cheek as a tear finally falls. He knows there was no accident. He knows that this had something to do with the Agency – it had to. “I’m so sorry, Katie,” he whispers. “I’m so so sorry.” Drawing in a ragged breath, he raises his head to plant a kiss on her hand, unwilling to let her go.

Con sinks down into a chair as he holds the phone up to his ear, hearing Reese’s voice on the other end. “Oh no…” The news of Katie rushed over him like a title wave. “How…what…..” He was at a loss for words, and numbly received the information.
After the call is over, he takes several minutes to pull himself together. Katie was alive, and that’s what really mattered at this point. Questions would be answered later. Right now, he had to stay strong…he had a job to do.
Rising from his seat in the living room, he goes to Rosetta’s office and knocks on the door. Once she answers, he looks at her grimly, knowing that the look on his face will give away the urgency of the situation. “Rosetta…sit down a minute, okay? I have something I need to tell you.”

Cindy sits back in the passenger seat of the car, sighing with content. He looks over to Wes, having noticed his clothing, but hadn’t yet commented. “You look awfully handsome tonight.”

Report

*The Doc nods at the chair for Jason to sit down again. He sits down in the chair next to both of them.* " She is alive to say the least. Very lucky as a matter of fact. She had some magor burns on her arms and legs. Her left eye had a small shard of glass in it. We removed it and it dosent look like it will leave anydamage but for now she has a patch over it as to not strain it. We removed the bulit from her shoulder. It dident hit anything major so thats taken care of. Now on to more pressing subject." *The doc lets out a long sigh before he speeks again.* "In the crash Katie's body was jared in such a way it severed her spin. Katie is paralized from the wast down. We were able to re connect the spine together and she is now in a cast but its going to take a VERY long time for it to heal. Even after it heals we dont know if she will ever be able to walk again. It will take alot of pashents for her to learn again. She is going to need all the company, and friends she has to help her. In cases like the the physicle injorys arnt what we are worryed about its the mental. The depresstion someone can sink into." *The Doc stands and lets out a sigh again looking down at Jason and Wyatt.* " I still dont understand how she got from the car to the road. She wouldent have been able to take herself there." *The doc shakes his head trying to figure it out.* " You guys are free to see her. She is pritty doped up at the moment so she can sleep without the pain. But you are more than free to go to see her. Just try not to make to much noise, and not to startle her she is going to be pritty out of it from the meds." *The doc walks off behind one of the desks to talk to the nurse.*

How is she?

Jason watches the paramedics feeling completely helpless, but having sense enough not to interfere. He feels like he’s trapped in one of his nightmares, except this time he knows he’s not just going to wake up to find everything fine.

He looks at the man lamely and nods. “I’m right behind you.” He’s quick to get back in the pickup, but pauses just before starting it. He stares at his hand that’s smeared with blood. Gritting his teeth, he pushes his grief to the back of his mind in order to stay functioning. He couldn’t lose it now. Turning the truck around, he catches up to the ambulance and follows it to the hospital, dialing his cell phone as he drives. “Yeah. Reese. Katie’s in a bad way. I’m following an ambulance to the hospital now. I don’t know what happened yet, but there was some kind of an accident.” He bites his tongue from suggesting who should come, but he knows it’s only right. “Tell Wyatt to get down to the hospital, but don’t make a big scene. I think there was foul play here and until we find out exactly what happened, we better not draw too much attention. Once we know Katie will be all right, we can decide if her family needs to know any of this…but I don’t know how bad off she is yet.”

When Wyatt hears the news, he wastes no time in getting to his jeep. As he speeds across town, a constant prayer is on his lips. He had no idea what kind of shape Katie was in, whether she would be fine, or if the accident had been severe. “Lord, please be with her. Please help her to be all right.”

Jason follows the paramedics inside, trying to keep Katie in his line of sight. As the doctor stops him, he almost fights, but forces himself to relent, his emotions threatening to spill over. He watches helplessly as the doctor disappears, and finally sinks down into a chair, burying his face in his hands. What had happened? Would Katie be okay? She had to be. Jason could already feel her slipping from his grasp. He couldn’t lose her…not now…not like this.

“Jason!”

Jason looks up, not knowing how long he’s been sitting alone. He sees Wyatt, and looks at him grimly.

Wyatt looks around for a moment, stricken with worry, but finally sits down. “What happened? Is she okay?”

“I don’t know yet.” Jason turns his gaze back to the floor. “Her car had gone off the road and was in flames…I found her on the side of the road…I don’t know how she got there…but she didn’t look good, Wyatt. I don’t know how she is.”

Wyatt swallows hard, and leans back in his chair. “They haven’t said anything?”

“Not yet.”

“How did you find her?”

Jason shrugs. “Someone called…I don’t know who it was, but they told me where she was.”

The two men let the silence reign for a long while, each afraid to voice their worries, and each lost in their own thoughts for their friend.
Reese calls twice for updates, but each time, neither have any news.

Jason jumps to his feet as the doctor comes through the doors. He hopes he’s not reading his face correctly, but is afraid to even ask. “How is she?”

3/2/08

OR

*As the ambulince arives they screech to a halt. 3 paramedics jump out rushing over to Katie. One rushes to check her vitles as the other yell directions. Before ya no it Katie has a neck brace on and they are gently moving her onto a strecher.* "Carfel it looks like something is messed up in her back." *Finally geting her on the strecher they load her into the ambulince.. One of the paramedics walk over to Jason.* "You can follow us on in. Once your there you can let them know what happend Son. *An hour or so later a doc apears again sweat pouring with a solum/sad look on his face.*

Please...

The concern Wyatt feels intensifies. “This isn’t like her. Nothing’s happened the last few days?”

“Nothing suspicious, if that’s what you mean.” Jason gets to his feet, now his own worry starting to form. “What do you think…” His phone interrupts him. “Go tell your dad and see if he wants us to do anything yet.” When Wyatt is gone, Jason is quick to snatch the phone up. Answering, the strange voice catches him off guard. “What do you…what is…” His eyes widen at the exploding sound. “No! Katie!” The line is dead, and the blood drains from Jason’s face. He knows in his gut that this call was no joke.

He dials 911 immediately. “Look I need an ambulance right NOW dispatched to Route…” he cringes, trying to remember. “103, right outside town. ….I’m not sure…no, that’s not where I am, just…. Someone is hurt, so get a squad out there NOW! This is not a prank!” Satisfied that someone actually took him seriously, Jason hangs up. Not even thinking, he exits his office and sprints down the hall, passing Hal’s desk on his way. “I need to borrow your truck.”

Hal sees Jason’s panic and simply holds out the keys lamely. “Is something….wrong…?” His voice trails off as Jason takes off again.

“Tell Reese to call the hospital in an hour!” Jason yells over his shoulder. Once outside, he makes a mad dash for Hal’s truck, not even thinking about the screaming pain in his knee. Kicking the vehicle into drive, he burns rubber on the way out of the parking lot, ignoring the speed limit out of town.

Once on Route 103, he pushes the truck as fast as it will go, trying to keep a level head. Katie was hurt…he could feel it. What had been the explosion he’d heard? What was really going on? There were so many questions. “Oh, Katie where are you?” Jason keeps his eyes on the road. It’s not long before he seeks the smoke and his heart leaps into his throat. Coming upon the scene, he slams on the breaks, barely pulling off onto the shoulder.

He spots a form lying on the side of the road and his stomach lurches. “No, no, no, Katie!” He runs toward her, sliding down on his knees beside her, not even thinking about how she’d ended up so far from the car that’s now just a ball of flames. Nothing else in the world matters. Tears sting his eyes as he sees her battered form. Bloody, burned and twisted, he’s afraid to see if she’s even still alive. Fighting the urge to move her, he puts a finger to her throat, checking for a pulse. Relief sweeps over him. It was weak, but she was alive.

“Oh, Katie what happened?” he whispers. He gently takes her hand in his, and wipes some soot and blood from her face. “It’ll be okay…help is coming…you’ll be okay….” He lifts his head to the sky, taking a deep breath to hold in his frantic emotions. “Oh, please let her be okay.”

Sirens are heard in the distance, and it’s within moments that the ambulance arrives.

Angel?

*Katie slowly opens her eyes pain corsing through her body. The smell of smoke filling her nose. The car it....was on fire. Frantic Katie trys to move. She has to get out of the car before it blew up. Again Katie trys to move its no use the more she moves the more pain she feels as her body is pinned. It was no use..this was the end. Finally Katie blacks out again from the smoke.*

*2 small but stong hands reach into Katies car gently lifting her from the flames. Carrying her to the side of the road.* "Its ok...Its gonna be ok."

*Katie's eyes flutter and open just alittle to reveal a glowing figure looking down at her. Katie head is killing her, and her body corses with pain was she halucanating.* "M....Mom. Is...is that show."

*The glowing figure looks down at she smiling.* "Shhhh..." *The figure reaches for Katie cell and press the button for Jason..waiting for him to answer.*

"Hello?"

*A soft angelic voice replys over the other line.* " Your friend is in trouble she needs you. Call an ambulince she is on RT 103 right outside town." *In the background a loud bang can be hurd as Katie's car explodes. The figure hangs up the phone and buts it down next to Katie. Smiling down at her once again she replys.* " Your friends are on there way. Its not your time." *Slowly the figure starts to walk down the road seeming to almost float.*

*The pain over takes Katie as she watches the figure go her eyes closing and falling into a dark sleep.*

*Wes finish up with the car he is working on and heads into his apartment starting to get ready for tonight. He puts on a nice dress shirt and a pare on black pants. He slips on his nice dress boots looking at himself in the mirror he smiles and heads to the messhall waiting for when Cindy was ready.*

Katie?

“Jason, did you get those files gone through?”

Jason picks up his phone at Reese’s voice. “Yeah. Didn’t come up with anything.”

“Aw, rats. Well, it was a long shot. Anyway, you heard from him?”

“No…was I supposed to? Katie headed out a while ago…I assumed she went to his place since they’ve been going out for lunch lately.”

“Hmm. Okay.” Reese pauses. “Oh, I just got a call in. I bet its him.”

Jason hears the click and shakes his head. For someone who kept track of so many things so well, there were just a few things Reese had trouble with.

Wyatt cradles the phone between his chin and shoulder as he’s stretched out on his couch. “Hey, Dad. Just wondered if Jason found anything.”

“No, nothing.”

“I thought maybe checking into John Filmore’s records might help,” Wyatt muses. “I’m thinking about coming in to work a few hours.”

“That would be fine. You could come back with Katie then.”

“Katie?”

“Yeah. Jason said she headed out earlier – assumed she’d come to your place.”

Wyatt frowns. “No…how long has she been gone?”

“A couple hours at least.”

Wyatt sits up, his jaw tightening. “And she didn’t say anything about where she was going?”

“Not that I know of.”

“I’m coming in.” Wyatt hangs up the phone and stands, looking for his shoes, and still fighting his headache. Something just didn’t feel right.

Jason taps his pencil absent mindedly on his desk. Leaning back in his chair, his thought suddenly bounce to Katie. A nervousness creeps into his veins. That was strange. It was an odd feeling….maybe he was just still confused about the night before. But…no…it was different… He frowns and picks up the phone just as Wyatt appears in his doorway.

“Jase, has Katie come back?”

“Well no. I thought she was with you.”

When everything seems right

*Katie sits in her room laying in bed for a long while listing to Jason play and sing. How she loved his voice and how he played. Soon Katie drifted off to bed a new smile on her face.*

*Back at smile Katie smiles and wave as Jason heads for his office over hearing that Wyatt wasent well. Heading to her desk Katie see the piles of work waiting for her. Digging in she starts to type away. Hours pass and its time for lunch. Leaning back in her chair Katie thinks of Wyatt once again. Katie needed to talk to Wyatt about some stuff Maybe if she braught him some lunch they could talk. Katie needed to get it off her chest before it kileld her. Standing Katies goes to Jason's office to let him know she was gonna be out for an hour or two and she could be back soon. Grabing the can of soup she had taken with her for Lunch Katie heads to her car and is off.*

*As Katie pulls out of the TJY parking lot a dark figure pulls behind her watching, waiting for the right moment.*

*As Katie drives her mind continues to reel once again. She had never had to talk about something like this with a guy. She dident even know where to start. Wyatt had been there for her for a while. He was Such a good guy he deserved to know the truth. Just how was Katie to tell him. Deciding at the last min Katie turns down a differnt road that lease off into the desert. Katie passes a sigh reading "Now Leaving Navada." She needed to clear her mind and figure out what to say to Wyatt before she went to him place.*

*The dark figure inside the car follow Katie laughs.* "Perfect no one will even know out here."

*As Katie continues to drive she loses all consintration not relizing someone was following her. Soon a car speady by her and swervs in front of her. Katie snaps back into relization as she see the car.* "Strange why would someone be out here." *Suddanly the car in front of Katie slams on its breaks. In an instinct Katies reflexs kick in as she herself slams on the breaks. Once again the car pulls along side of her.* " What on earth." *The car swerves into her sending her off the road slightly. Regaing controll Katie looks in her review mirror to see another car behind her. She was traped her only option was to go faster and try to out run them. Katie steps on the gas. She seems to be out running them when the car once again pulls next to her.* "Crap." *Katie heart races what was she to do now. Witchout warning a shot ring out through the air shatter Katie's car winshield and sending a shart pain into her shoulder. Katie lets out a scream but trying to stay focused. The car from behind catches up and rams the car, as the one from the side sends Katie sailing odd the road again. Once again trying to regain controll of the car Katie swerves though the desert sand. One of the tires on the car pop as Katies car starts to roll ove and over and over again finally coming to a halt as it hits a tree and bursts into flames.*

*Satisfied with there work the 2 cars drive off into the distince. One dialing a number into his cell phone and waiting.*

*Wes calls to make resavations for Cindy and himself it was going to be a night to remember. He was geting nervouse and excited at the same time. Wes cell phone rings.* "Hello?"

*A gruff voice answers on the other end.* " It is done Sir."

*Wes nods though the caller cant see him.* "Exilent." *Wes makes his way to the shop as his plane in now in motion. He had a couple hours to work before he had to get ready.*

Back in the swing of things

Jason makes himself scarce until supper is ready, feeling the familiar tension all over again. It was his fault, and he felt stupid. He needed to be more careful…needed to keep his head clearer.
Hearing Katie call him, he goes to the kitchen, forcing himself to be as relaxed as possible, attempting to convey that nothing has changed. The moment earlier is forgotten, or at least pushed aside not to be considered anymore.

Jason chitchats with Katie while they eat, doing his best to make the atmosphere light for her sake. When finished, he doesn’t stay up in the living room this time, but helps with dishes, then heads to bed after a quick “Goodnight.”

It’s not until a while later that a soft melody drifts from his open bedroom. A sweet tune floats on the air, soon accompanied by a voice not often heard, singing quiet and low a soothing melody. It continues into the evening until the last notes die away into the darkness.

Though one might wish the night to last forever, morning must have it’s way, and the sun is soon up. Jason rises and prepares for the day, grabbing some breakfast and getting something for lunch later. The now-routine goes as normal, and before they know it, Jason and Katie are back at TJY to start another day. Jason throws her a smile and a wink before heading to his office. “See ya later.”

“Hey, Jason!”

Jason turns around to see Reese. “Yeah?”

“Wyatt called in this morning. Said he’s got a splitting headache and might not make it in today…mind going through some of those case files he’s been on?”

“No problem.” Jason takes some more paper from Reese. “I’ll just pile it on to the rest of my work.”

Dinner

*Katie heart starts to pound as she knows what is about to happen next. Katie closes her own eyes losing all controll for a moment. Though feelig Jason pull away Katie opens her eyes again and nods. Feeling a bit disapointed and a bit guilty Katie turns and heads back inside.* "Dinner sure does smell good." * As Katie finishs up dinner in the kitchen her mind reels. Jason...Wyatt..Jason.....slowly her feelins for Jason were returning. But Wyatt what about Wyatt if Katie truly care wouldent she feel this way about Jason.* "J dinner is done." *Katie puts the plates down and sits clearing her mind for an enjoyablt meal.*

Restraint

Jason is a little surprised by Katie’s statement…he’d gained so much from her…it was hard to believe he’d done anything in return. But if she believed that to be true, he wasn’t going to argue.

As Katie joins him at the railing, he turns to her, a smile playing in his eyes. “Ya know…you really are an amazing woman…I’m not sure I’ll ever have you figured out.” He locks eyes with her, a slight tension beginning to grow. “…But then…what would be the fun with no mystery?” He searches her eyes, the sun rays dancing off her face, putting a glow to her cheeks.

Without even thinking, Jason reaches out to tuck a strand of hair behind Katie’s ear, and suddenly finds himself being drawn in closer, his heart beating faster. A brief memory flickers through his mind of the day back in Texas when Katie had impulsively given him a brief kiss, embarrassed as she might have been…he’d never forgotten it. Tonight it’s his own face to move down barely inches from hers, and he closes his eyes, feeling her breath on his cheek. His lips move towards hers as he anticipates what’s to come.

…Wyatt
……Katie’s taken
………We’re just friends

The movement stops just before his lips meet hers. Jason takes a deep breath and slowly backs off, straightening up as he tries to control his heart rate, and swallowing hard. He catches Katie’s eyes for just a moment, conveying a brief look of apology. “Guess we better check on supper…smells like it’s getting done.”

Your Welcome

*Katie smiles up at Jason* " You had it in your all along Jason. You just needed to out faith in your and outright told you what they though." *Katie cant help but giggle her eyes dancing in the seting sun.*....Your welcome J. And thank you. You probley dont relize it but you helped me alot too. I've opened up alot since i have met you. I've learned of love and friendship. I guess the saying is true we all learn something new from people everyday." *Katie sits up in the chair and streaches.* "I'm happy you had a great day Jason. You did need it and you do Deserve it." *Katie holds her smile as he last rays of light disapear over the harizon. Standing Katie leans on the railing and looks out as the tiny lights of the town flicker on.*

My Stability

The afternoon seems to go by in a blur. By the time Jason is back at the hotel with Katie, it feels like the day had been a dream. His body felt like it had been run over my a truck, but his mind is still running a million miles per hour. Everyone had been so nice…things would be different at TJY now…but I would be better…he had a circle of friends now that he’d never known he had…it was a comfort he’d never experienced.

Setting his guitar on its stand in the corner of his room, he looks at it one more time, just shaking his head. He only wished Con had been there like he’d wanted to be, but there had been a change of plans.

Smelling supper cooking, Jason makes his way to the kitchen. Not seeing Katie, he looks around until spotting her out in a chair on the balcony. Sighing, he tucks his thumbs in his jeans pockets and wanders out onto the deck. He takes a deep breath of the warm night air and leans down to rest his elbows on the railing, looking down at the swimming pool, then out past the city lights. He’d hardly had a chance to talk to Katie all day...though he’d wanted to. The day would have been much different if she hadn’t have brought him this far.

He finally straightens and turns around, crossing his arms casually and offering half a grin. “I haven’t had a chance yet to thank you…” A short laugh escapes and he lowers his gaze for just a moment before looking back up to see her eyes. “You do realize that if it wasn’t for you…I never would have been able to do the things I did today. You’ve…helped me see things in a different light ever since I met you, and…” He purses lips in thought. “Well...I don’t know how I would have made it through all this without you. You’ve been my stability, Katie…thank you.”

Sunset

*Katie cant help but smile even bigger. As she watches Jason and everyone interact. Feeling Jason's eyes on her more than once, Katie offers small nods to let Jason know he is doing ok, and its gonna be ok. The smile never leaving Katie's face. Soon...soon Jason was going to be free and he wasent going to need Katie's protection anymore. At one time that though scaired her, but now it brang her joy. Katie new even if Jason dident need her to pull him out of the nightmares, he would still be there to be her friend. Watching Jason and everyone interact Katie suddonly feels like the odd person out looking in at everyone. Laughing, joking, telling storys of the past. She had been at TJY for a while now but yet dident hold as much knolage as everyone alse. Katie lets out a sigh. She was still content and it was good to see Jason open up to everyone. Smiling Katie walks over to Scott and hands him a napkin.* "Here ya go dig in." * Before long everyone has eaten there fill of cookies and other snacks and are now back to work. Katie sits at her desk typing up the little but she needed to finish. Once she is done she turns her computer off and heads for Wyatt's desk. Seeing he is not there Katie figures he is gone for the day. Katie heads back to Jason's office and lets him know they would leave when he was ready.*

*A bit more time pass and finally Jason and Katie are on there way back to the hotel. It was nice to see the sun still up when they leave. Summer was a good time. Once they are back Katie heads to the small kitchen and starts cooking up some steak, patato salad, and corn for dinner. As the sun is now starting to set Katie makes her way out onto the small balcony. The sky were differnt shades of red, purple, and orange. It was a grandsigh indeed. Katie sits down in one of the small chairs to relax as dinner cooks.*

Surprise!

Jason looks up from his desk, raising his eyebrows. Katie didn’t usually beg him to join her for lunch…she’d been going out with Wyatt lately. “Um….” He smirks at her puppy eyes and shakes his head with a laugh. “Alright. You win. But if Reese gets on my tail for being late with this thing, I’m sending him to you.”
He gets up and walks with Katie out of his office, trying to remember what he’d put in the fridge for lunch that day.

“Surprise!!!”

Jason skids to a halt in the doorway, stunned by everyone gathered in the break room. “What…?” His eyes go wide, shifting from person to person. They were all wearing smiles…apparently he wasn’t in trouble. But what on earth was going on? He swings his gaze to Katie for a moment, before looking back at the others.

Laura comes forward, giving Jason a hug. “We all thought you could use a pick-me-up,” she explains, smiling. “Come on. We’ve got some cookies and everything.”

Jason steps further into the room, feeling dumb. “I….what…”

Laura giggles. “And we’ve got something for you too…” She gestures for the others to spread apart, revealing the acoustic guitar on its stand.

Jason hadn’t known he could be even more surprised, but his eyes get even wider. “Please don’t tell me you…”

“We did.” Laura beams. “Is it the kind you wanted?”

“Well…yes, but…” Jason can’t understand any of this, and continues to look around at the group lamely. “I don’t….I don’t understand. Why…?”

“Because we wanted to do something nice for you,” Susanne speaks up. “It’s a far cry from what we’d like to do after everything that’s happened, but we thought it might help.”

“It was Con’s idea,” Laura adds. “He rallied all of us to pitch in.”

Jason can’t help but step forward and reach out to touch the frets of the shiny new guitar. It was exactly the instrument he’d wanted for a long time. It was even better than what he’d had. He glances up at the others again, beginning to feel a strange mixture of emotions. “I still don’t….” He furrows his brow. “Why?”

“Is it so hard to believe we care about you?” Hal questions gruffly.

Susanne smiles. “Hotshot, swallow your pride and accept the fact that we love you.”

Jason’s face begins to grow red. “But…I don’t deserve…I mean….I can’t accept something like this.”

“Yes you can,” Laura states flatly. “You deserve a whole lot more than this, too.”

“Oh come on, me?” Jason is so taken aback by all of this that he doesn’t even know what to do.

“Yes, you.” Susanne gives his shoulder a pat. “Don’t act so surprised. You brightened this place up as soon as you started working here. You’re one of the best we got, you’re kind to all of us around here, and without you, this place just seems a little bit duller.”

Jason swallows the lump in his throat. These people had it all wrong. They were putting him on a pedestal that he certainly didn’t deserve. They had no idea what he’d thought, or who he’d pretended to be in front of them all these years. They were giving him a gift that showed they cared about someone who he wasn’t. “I…” He glances to Katie, his eyes pleading for help, but this time he was on his own, and the spotlight was getting hotter. “You guys shouldn’t have…I mean…man, this guitar is a beauty. I’ve been dreaming about this kind for a long time. But…I just…” His gaze finally drops to the floor. “If you knew who I really was, I don’t think you’d be doing this.”

The room grows a little quieter as it’s obvious that Jason’s tone is implying more than surface embarrassment.

“What do you mean, Jase?” Susanne questions.

The silence seems to drag on for an eternity, when really it’s only several seconds. Jason’s mind reels. Here was a group of people…a dear group of friends that he had underestimated…even taken for granted. He’d had no idea they cared about him that much…he’d always simply thought that they considered him a coworker…someone to hang out with at best if they had no one else. But this…this gathering and this gift…it blew him away. And he’d been hiding from them all. He’d been blind to their friendship, and as a result, he’d hidden his true self, afraid of rejection or embarrassment.

Jason raises his eyes again, the raging emotions reflecting in his eyes. He owed these people more than that. He owed them the truth before they took anything too far…it was time.

“Look…” He catches Katie’s eye, groping for support before moving his gaze around the room. “I’m not really the ‘Hotshot’ y’all think I am. I got a life, a past, and problems that I’ve never told anyone here about before because…well, because I was afraid to. I see now that it was wrong…but I’ve always shown you guys a person who’s not really me…and…I don’t know how to accept a gift like this when that’s the truth.”

Susanne steps forward with compassion, putting a hand on his shoulder. “You think we don’t know that?” she asks. A gentle smile creases her lips. “You’ve always lived a private life, Jason… there’s things about you that none of us know because you always made yourself off limits when it came to personal things. But no matter how good you are at TJY, and no matter how skilled you are at your job…we do know you’re still human. Everyone has problems whether others know about them in particular or not. It would have been nice to know you apart from work, but we knew you had your reasons. And just because you locked yourself away doesn’t mean we didn’t see this…” She moves her hand to Jason’s chest. “You may think that ‘Hotshot’ is all a lie…but how can it be, when it’s a portion of your heart? Whether you intended to let your own self shine through or not, you can’t tell me that your willingness to help others wasn’t real. You can’t tell me that your passion for this job wasn’t real. You can’t tell me that your compassion for those in need wasn’t real.” Susanne shakes her head. “There’s a lot we don’t know about you because you never let us in. But there’s a whole lot we do know, and those are the things that count.”

Jason is so completely taken aback, that he doesn’t realize the tears pooling behind his eyes. He wasn’t sure of a time he’d been more humbled than this. He forces a short laugh. “I don’t know what to say.”

Hal’s eyes widen teasingly. “Hotshot? Speechless? This is quite the occasion.”

Jason can’t help a small grin and he sighs deeply. “You all have me backed into a corner, you realize that?” He shakes his head. “I guess now would be a good time to apologize…I did have reasons for separating myself from you…but they weren’t good reasons. And…I know just since I came back from Texas, I haven’t exactly been sociable…and I’m sorry about that.”

Rick lifts an eyebrow. “Is there anything we can do for you?”

“Ha!” Jason points to the guitar. “You guys have done way too much already.”

“No…is there anything we can do for you?” Rick repeats. “You like to hide, no doubt, but if there’s anything we can do to help you through whatever it is you’re going through…you only have to let us know.”

Jason swallows hard, finding his eyes sinking to the floor again. “No…not really. It’s…not just the fire or…or things here at work that have…well sort of got me down lately though,” he confesses. He might as well tell the truth now that he had an opening… now that he realized it couldn’t hurt him. “It’s not a secret that I was abducted when I was nine…” He clears his throat awkwardly. “And…I have problems with that…” He looks up again, finding Katie’s face, though still addressing the group. “I locked myself away a long time ago because of it…and I hurt myself in the process. And now that I’m an adult, it comes back to haunt me. I thought I worked through everything, but now and again I experience a relapse that pretty much entails fierce nightmares and flashbacks.” He pauses, trying to maintain an even keel with his emotions, and purses his lips grimly with a nod. “I’ve realized that I’ll probably have periodic relapses the rest of my life, though hopefully the frequency and severity will decrease… It’s something that’s been rather an embarrassment as of late, and…I apologize if anything I did or said reflected anger towards any of you, when really my anger was aimed at something completely different.”

Laura is quick to wipe a tear from her eye. She was so proud of Jason…so happy that he was finally, finally letting people in.

Hal offers Jason a nod. “You’re not alone, Jase. When I was a firefighter years ago there was a tragedy I experienced firsthand. I worked through it, but it still comes back to me…sometimes it’s just one flashback…sometimes it takes me down for a week. I can understand, and you don’t need to apologize.”

Jason looks at Hal with surprise. He hadn’t known that. He could remember times that Hal had taken leave for several days quite unexpectedly, but had never realized why.

Susanne sees Jason’s surprise, and smile. “The benefit to sharing yourself is having others share with you too.” She cocks her head. “We’re here for ya, Hotshot…that’s a promise.”

Jason can’t even express how he feels. All his walls…his barriers…they were gone. He was left out in the open bare and vulnerable…but it hadn’t been as painful as he’d thought. He hadn’t received the strange looks he’d thought he would. No one was upset with him. No one thought he was crazy. Hal could even relate. Jason had feared for so long to allow these people to know him, and now that he’d finally taken a step forward, he was finding out just how ridiculous that fear had been. These people…these friends…they cared about him enough not to be shocked by his past…not to be bothered by it in the least…they only wanted to help if they could.

Scott can see the emotions building, and quite loudly breaks things up before Jason melts in the spotlight. “If we’re not going to have these cookies, I’m going to have to remove myself from the room before I drool all over them.”

Please

*Katie nods to Susanne* "I'll see what I can do." *Katie exits the break room and heads to Jason's office. Knocking and entering.* "Jason...I'm heading to lunch and I'd like some company, will you come with me please?" *Katie smiles trying not to show the excitment in her eyes.* " I know your going to say you want to finish your research but it can wait. It will be back for when you return. PLEASE..." *Katie cant help but flash some puppy dog eyes.*

Plans

Cindy grins and leans into Wes. “I’d love to go out with you. As if you thought I’d say no.” She giggles. “Sounds like fun.

The next few days go by quickly, with nothing out of the ordinary happening. Jason stays on an even keel, though avoids most people at work, sticking close by to Katie in the evenings to help him regroup and stay focused. He stays on track with his eating and finally gains approval from Rick to not have to have daily checkups, and continues his daily workouts at TJY in his spare time. He steers clear of Wyatt for the most part, and doesn’t talk much to the others, still unsure of himself and his own feelings for everything that’s been happening.

By the next week, Jason’s fully recovered from his flashbacks. Behind the scenes, the rest of the staff has joined together to secretly get Jason’s guitar and make plans for an in-house party. Tuesday afternoon, a group gathers in the break room, waiting for Jason to come in for lunch and surprise him.

“Shhhh!” Susanne waves at the group that’s hiding the guitar, and she peeks around the corner. “He’s coming, he’s coming!”

Jason strolls down the hall, his eyes on the filing folder in his hand. His stomach growls and he pauses before the break room, but then decides he’ll eat in a while. He wants to finish this research first. He continues his route to his office, shutting the door behind him.

“The twerp!” Laura exclaims. “I told you that if we banked on him coming for lunch he wouldn’t. Now what?”

Susanne looks to Katie. “See if you can get him to come in here, will ya? Say something like….oh, I don’t know…. Just get him in here, then we can all yell ‘surprise’ or something when he shows up.”

Yet Another Day

*After Katie finishs up in the bathroom she packs her own small bag and heads to the kitchen. Making herself a small lunch she makes a sndwitch for Jason too. Puring coffee for the both of them she makes sure the lights are shut off and heaads out to the car with Jason making there way to TJY.*

*As Wes exits the shop he see Cindy walking to the mess hall. Running up next to her he puts his around around her shoulders.* "Morning Pritty Lady." *Wes plants a kiss on Cindy's face.* "Hey I was thinking how about next wensday we go out to eat at this new place in town. Its a bit fancy but I'd like to try it out and who better to try it out with." *Wes cant help but beam.*

I'm ready

Jason offers a low chuckle at Katie’s suggestion of pretending they didn’t hear the alarm. “I wish.” He almost goes for her hand teasingly as it runs across his arm, but thinks better of it, and simply grins. He scoots his feet to the side to make it easier for her to get off the couch, and sighs with content as he watches her exit the living room. “Mm-hmm,” he answers to her statement about breakfast, but he takes a few minutes to finally roll off the couch himself. He heads to his own room and shower, and it doesn’t take him long to be shaven and ready to go. Stuffing his other clothes into his bag, her grimaces. Maybe he can beg Laura to do some laundry for him since he hasn’t been able to get to a laundry mat or anywhere to buy new clothes yet.

Heading into the kitchenette, he opens the small fridge and grabs an apple. He leans up against the short counter to eat his light breakfast, and runs a hand through his hair, trying to get it dry. His mind felt fairly clear this morning…he was fair spirits…for someone whose life had turned upside down. He still had a lot to get through as far as all that had happened the last few days were concerned. But…this morning he had just a little more confidence that he could make it through. It wouldn’t be easy…but the only direction he had to go was up.

“I’m ready when you are, Hero,” he calls loudly, tossing the apple core into the trash. He takes just as moment to test his blood sugar to keep Rick happy, then gathers his bag to wait in the living room.

Con is just ready to shut off his computer after checking his TJY’s emails, when he notices a new one has come in. He grins as he reads Katie’s message, and replies before heading to the ranch.
[Hey, Kat! Great – glad you’re on the band wagon. Most of the staff is. Scott got a hold of me yesterday. Of all people, he knew what kind of guitar Jason’s always wanted. Ha. Anyway, Thanks for letting me know.
Got yourself a car huh? That’s great! I’d like to come up for a visit one of these days to touch base with Carter, so now I’ll have to see the car.
By the way – I’ve emailed Jason a couple times but haven’t heard back from him. Be sure he knows that if he needs a place to stay he can always bum out at my apartment. He should have a key, but if he doesn’t, Laura does.
Take care of yourself. Will be talking to you soon.
Big Bro Con
PS – Last night at supper we all found out that your aunt and Mick are now officially engaged.]

Cindy sighs deeply and puts her phone back down before dialing. Jason was already going through so much…Reese had reported to Con last night that Jason had been in to see Rick on top of everything else, apparently having passed out. And yet…the older he got, the harder it was to talk to him. He was so protective of her…and yet had kept himself at a distance. And she was supposed to talk to him about the future? But what could she really say? She’d hinted to him that she might stay in Texas, depending on how things progressed between her and Wes… but at the same time, she was unsure if anything was going to happen there anyway. She hoped it would…but would Wes actually want to take that step? She wasn’t sure. Maybe he really wasn’t that serious…maybe….
She sighs again. No, she should just call Jason and clear the air. Picking up the phone again, she dials, but receives news from Susanne that he isn’t in to work yet. So much for that.
Finally getting up enough gumption, Cindy rises from her bed and goes outside to head to the mess hall. Things were changing here…Luke and Angel were engaged…Rosetta and Mick were now engaged… it was fun to see these people picking things up where they’d left off so long ago. Was there a happy ending in it for her too?

A new Day

*Still half asleep and awake Katie relizes she never went into her room last not. She had fallen asleep with Jason on the sofa all night. Katie though that this situation would make her feel uncomfortable, but it dident. She had goten a goodnight sleep something she hadent had in a long time. It was so warm and comfortable she dident dair want to movie. Hearing the alarm go off Katie grones and opens her eyes looking at Jason and smiling.* "Cant we just pretend we dont hear it?" *Katie knows even though she dosent want to get up she has to. Removing the blanket Katie streches not meaning to run her hand lightly across Jason's arm.* "I'll start us some coffee and make sure you have something for breakfest before you go." *Katie smiles as she heads into the small kitchen. Jason had made it through the night ok. She was proude of him. That was the first step in the right direction. It was a nice feeling to see Jason awake without large bags under his eyes. After Katie starts the coffee she heades into her room and siting down with he laptop to write an email to Con.*

{Dear Con, I'm in on the idea. I'll give Laura some money next time I see her. I think thats a great idea. Oh ya I am gonna have to come out and see you guys sometime so you can check out my new car. I love it. I'm riding in style now. Well better get going Jason and I will be leaving for TJY soon. Talk to ya later... -Katie}

*After sending the email and shuting her laptop down Katie heads into the bathroom to get ready for the new day. A smile planted on her face not able to move. Katie felt overly happy today, almost content. Today was going to be a good day she hoped.*

3/1/08

Morning dawns

Jason can feel Katie’s breathing slow down, and knows that she’s fallen asleep. A slight grin curls the corner of his mouth and he shuts the tv off, settling his head down on the armrest. The living room is dark and quiet, leaving his mind much space to wander. But somewhere between TJY and now, some of the tension had been lifted. He wasn’t sure where or how…though he had been able to relax finally during and after supper. A memory inserts itself into his mind, but for once today, it doesn’t make him cringe. Had his battle ended so easily after such a severe attack? Jason begins to realize that even though he’s worked through the past, he may very well have flare-ups the rest of his life, and feeling the way he did now, he knew that each time might be different, affecting him in different ways. He only wished he could get more of a handle on it so he could continue to function when it happened.

For now though, like a fever breaking was the sign of a sickness wearing off, his relaxed state of mind signaled him that he’d been wrong earlier to state that the night would be hard. He would be okay…and he was even more assured of that fact, knowing that Katie was close by.

Jason finally closes his eyes, ready to face the night. He stretches out his arm and accidentally touches Katie. Instead of withdrawing though, he gently combs her hair with his fingers for just a moment, then lays his hand to rest lightly on her head.

...Morning dawns with Jason never having moved all night, and if it weren't for his alarm going off in the other room to disturb the peace and quiet, he would have been quite content to simply remain for several more hours. He was warm and comfortable in this position. But he knows the sound will have woken Katie as well.

Sleep

*Katie is a bit saprised by Jason's actions and wonders for a moment what he is doing. Finally though she relaxes and her tirdness sinks in. Katie decieds she will sit with Jason untill he falls asleep than she will make her way to her own bed. It was only right. Katie watches TV forcing her eyes to stay open. It was warm on the coutch under the blanket. Finally without warning Katies eyes close and she is fast asleep.*

*Rosetta runs with Mick to the mess hall laughing like kids once again*

Stay

Jason follows Katie’s lead and helps her with the groceries. Once she starts dinner, he feels a bit like a lame duck and finally just leaves her be, flopping down on the couch in the small living room. He flips on the tv and after several minutes finds a western movie to keep his mind occupied. Settling in, he pulls his feet up on the couch, the smells of supper keeping him awake.

Supper is enjoyed, and Jason compliments Katie’s cooking, not having realized how good she was at it. Once finished, both wind up on the couch in front of the tv, the darkness settling outside to bring in the night.

Jason yawns and glances at his watch. He was simply exhausted, but there was too much tension. He didn’t want to have nightmares, but he knew if he went to his room alone, they would come. He didn’t want Katie to have to get up and take care of him… and if she did, he didn’t want to be found in the position he’d been in last night.

He glances over to Katie, seeing the tiredness in her eyes. She was a trooper, no doubt, but she was human, and needed sleep eventually. Jason would need a good night in order for that to happen, and the only chance he had at that, was betting on the fact that he was more settled with her presence.

Making up his mind to act a bit impulsive, he grabs a blanket that’s lying over the couch armrest. Lying on his side he pulls his feet up onto the edge of the couch leaving space between his legs and the backrest, and throws the blanket out to spread as far as Katie. Without warning, he reaches over to pull Katie down behind his legs until her head is resting on his hip. “Now – I’m not going to go to my room because I don’t want to, and you’re not going to your room because I don’t want you to have to come running after me. So compromise, stay here, shut up and get some sleep.”

Mick laughs, and grasps Rosetta’s hand, letting her lead him from the barn. “Alright. You win.”

Happyest Woman

*Katie cant help but giggle.* "We need Milk to go with them." *After picking up some more stuff Katie grabs stuff for dinner. Finally making there way to the check out than load the car up.* "Ok back to the Hotal we go." *Katie makes her way back to the hotal unloading the car and entering. Before puting anything away Katie looks around the rooms and deams it ok. Katie starts to put stuff away than starts dinner.*

*Rosetts looks back into Mick's eyes. This day....God he was good. The day had finally come when Mick had asked her to marry him and it was worth every year of the wait. Rosetta eyes dance as she receaves Mick's kiss and returns her own. Rosetta lingers in Mick's arms not wanting this moment to her. But the rumble in her tummy tells her its time to eat. Pulling away Rosetta smiles.* " You made me the happyest woman alive Mick, But I'm not going to stay that way if I dont get something to eat. Come on...we can come back out here after dinner if you want." *Rosetta takes Mick's hand and leads him out to the mess hall.*

No words needed

Jason chuckles and shakes his head. “If I were shopping alone I’d be heading to the frozen dinner section. Get whatever you want…I’m hoping by tomorrow we might have a lead on our mysterious shooter/arsonist, but if not, we might be at the hotel for a little while unless I can convince Reese that I’m okay on my own.”
Walking down one of the aisle, he grabs a package of Oreos, giving Katie a silly grin. “One of my weaknesses.”

Mick is on his feet, taking Rosetta in his arms with a laugh full of a happiness he hasn’t felt in years. He spins her around and sets her back down, pulling away just enough so he can see her face. His eyes dance, the love filling his gaze. He’d had no doubt of Rosetta’s answer, but hearing it sealed the joy. Cocking his head, he wraps his arms around her again, pressing his lips to hers.

ANSWER

*Katie smiles and follows Jason.* " Nope no planes for dinner. Maybe we can pick up some chicken and I can make chicken-catch-a-torie. Fruit is good too. We have that fridge in there we we can get stuff to drink as well. Maybe some bread for sandwitches...." *Katie stops talking for a moment.* " Ok I guess I am overduwing it a bit. I do need to get some stuff myself though." *Katie smiles as she pushes the cart and follows Jason.*

*As Mick speaks Rosetta for a moment is stuned. She has been waiting for this day for 20+ years and now that it was here Rosetta could hardly believe it. It was there turn for happyniss. Rosetta's smile turns even digger. Losing all controll she jumps up and throws her arms around Mick huging him tightly. Tears of happyness well from Rosetta's eyes.* "Yes Mick, I dont have to think twice about it. YES!" *Rosetta cant help but keep clinging to Mick. She had never been so happy.*

Shopping

Jason grins as he gets out of the car. “Yeah…I better get some wheels under myself too one of these days so I don’t have to keep borrowing Hal’s truck…not that I mind driving it.”
Getting into the store, he looks around, trying to push everything else out of his mind for now. “Uh…I guess some fruit would be good, unless I want Rick to ride my tail.” He shrugs. “We should probably pick something up for supper too, unless you got plans elsewhere.” He heads for the aisles on the right, familiar with the store.

Mick smiles as Rosetta joins him. “No worries. Just give me a couple more minutes so I can finish this up. I’ve been neglecting it.”

As he continues to rub oil into the saddle a little faster, he watches Rosetta out of the corner of his eye. That in itself was an enjoyable pastime, but his mind was a little heavier today, and he hoped it didn’t show too much. They’d been sitting on the Agency case for a long time now with no progress. They’d seen nothing, found nothing and heard nothing. Yet everyone knew it wasn’t over. Whoever was in charge, whether the Agency or Dr. Medridge, they were doing a good job of making themselves scarce. It only led everyone to believe that one of these days they would be taken by surprise.

Mick runs his hand along the saddle’s fender, using his hands to work the oil in. It was just a matter of time until the real battle began…everyone knew it, though they seldom discussed it. As it was, life was running quite smoothly. But no one wanted to make any moves, afraid that they’d be the ones to set the war in motion.

Rosetta invades Mick’s thoughts again as she did more frequently as of late. She’d been so strong through all of this…she always had been, even years ago when things got tough. Now she was waiting things out with the best of them, standing firm and being an encourager like no other. Mick knew that when the time came, he could count on her to be right with him to end this war. But what about when it was over? At the moment, things couldn’t change too much. Location meant everything, staying together with the gang meant even more, and though at a standstill with the Agency case, it was dangerous to shift one’s focus from it, lest there be a surprise attack. So no, not much could change now. But…that didn’t keep any of them from making plans for after this whole thing was over. His nephew was planning on sticking around, Luke and Angel would get married, Becky and Jim would be reunited, surely Wes had his own plans, Sparky would probably go back home, Eric was considering staying in the area to keep trucking, Jeff had toyed with the idea of staying at the ranch, and Austin and Con would go back to Nevada. …But what about Mick? What were his plans? He glances at Rosetta before focusing on the leather that surrounded the saddle’s stirrup. She meant the world to him…and for once, he couldn’t imagine being without her again. They’d certainly had their ups and downs, but somehow…somehow they’d managed to hang on to each other despite the bumps in the road – especially Rosetta. Mick owed her so much.

The future was uncertain…who knew what would happen with the Agency? The gang prayed that when it was over, their family would still be whole with no losses – but there were no guarantees. Could Mick not find the one thing he knew he wanted, to hang on to as hope for the future? There were no guarantees…but how much more passion could one fight with, if having a hope – a plan for a future – for when it was over? No, nothing could change now. But that couldn’t stop the hope…that couldn’t stop the plans…that couldn’t stop the love. And he could no longer deny the one he loved of that hope. Another day would not slip through his fingers unchanged.

Mick continues to keep his eyes on his saddle, moving to the edges of the skirt and scraping off some dirt before applying more oil. His peripheral vision keeps track of Rosetta's movements and reactions. “So…” His voice comes out low and casual. “When we all get through this and we take down the Agency once and for all…what do you say we finally get hitched and get away somewhere to leave all these crazies behind?” He turns to look at her, grinning with mischief, but his eyes don’t lie – he’s not kidding.

Night Falling

*Katie smiles and nods* " Your very welcome J. I am just happy to help." *As they pull into the parkinglot Katie giggles.* " Thank you. I like it. It makes me feel...I dont know but it makes me feel something. Maybe important. Like I really made it somewhere in life." *Katie and Jason exit the car and head into the store. Katie stands and smiles.* "So what would you like to get for yourself to keep at the hotel?" *Katie looks around the small store taking in everyone and everything making sure it was all in place and nothing was fishy.*

*As Rosetta finishs up in the barn the smell of dinner drifts in the air. Making her way to the tack room to let Mick know Dinner was done. They had spent so much time together the last few days it was so nice. Rosetta was content and happy. Rosetta nods as she pass a few guests, and smiles laughing as Jeff and BJ play in the yard. As She enters the tack room the smell hits her nose and makes her smile even more. How she had come to love that smell. It reminded her of every memorie. Going over to Mick she sits down next to him and crosses her legs smiling.* " I hate to bother you for dinner you look as comfortable and at peace."

Don't know what I'd do

Jason stares down at his hands, not sure how to feel. Katie was too good to him, plain and simple. His anger had subsided to leave him only with a sadness that he had to continue enduring his nightmare until it was over again. “Alright,” he relents quietly. “But just for the record…I really am sorry. I know that all this cropped up again because of everything else…and I just want to get through it without hurting somebody…least of all you.”
Now that he was out of the office, his walls are back down again, revealing the vulnerable feelings he’s held inside all day. Taking a deep breath, he leans his head back against the seat. “Thanks, Katie…for everything. I hope tonight isn’t as bad, so you can get some sleep. I feel bad that I can’t help it, ya know…but…for what it’s worth…I really appreciate you helping me.” He glances up to look at her as she drives, biting the corner of his mouth. “I don’t know what I’d do without knowing…that you’re there for me.”
He sees they’re approaching the store and takes a deep breath, trying to lighten the mood. “By the way…nice set of wheels.”

Mick pulls the saddle stand closer to begin cleaning and oiling it. The tack room was warm and on the verge of stuffy, but the scent of leather was inviting and soothing. He relaxes and begins the much needed task on his saddle, reflecting on the rides he’d shared with Rosetta lately. It had been just as much fun as he’d known it would be…so many memories had come back…so many good talks and laughs.
Sighing with content, Mick knows he mentioned for Rosetta to come get him when supper was ready, and hoped to get his saddle done before she came. Glancing at his watch, he’s pretty sure she’ll show up any minute, but it was worth a try to see if he could get this done.

Wrong

*The drive from TJY back to the hotel is a quiet one. Katie wants to be excited with Jason abut her new car but the moon seems to be broken. What Wyatt said stuck in Katie's mind. Wyatt just dident understand. She couldent leave Jason at a time like this. Him being in anyone alse hands would not be good. Sure she was tired but it was noting she hadent felt with before. Lack of sleep was the most common reprcution of Katie's past she use to deal with. Katie let out a small unhurd sigh before replying to Jason.* "Reese might not have had this in mind when he asked me to watch over you, But I new what I was geting into when I said yes. Anyways I never said I HAD to go through this with you. I want too. I would exspect you to do the same for me. Wyatt just dosent understand is all. Dont worry he'll come around. Lets head to the store and get some stuff for the hotel." *Katie turns to head to the supermarket. Her car makes the reving sound a aracing car as Katie cant help but Squeel.*

2/29/08

Is he right?

Jason and Wyatt lock eyes for just a moment as Katie walks away.

“What’s your problem?” Jason hisses.

“I just stated it.”

“Don’t you trust Katie?”

“Yes.” Wyatt grits his teeth. “It’s you I don’t trust.”

Jason scoffs and spins on his heel, following after Katie.

Wyatt watches them leave and just stares at the door as it closes. He hadn’t wanted to get as upset as he had…but was it always going to be this difficult? Had he been wrong to pursue Katie’s affections at a time like this? It just seemed so awkward with Jason constantly in the mix. Wyatt was impressed with Katie’s sixth sense, but it drove him crazy to think that it was a harmful quality as Jason’s problems continued.

Sighing in frustration, Wyatt trudges to the door to leave for the night.

Jason wants to tell Katie how neat her car looks, and wants to compliment her choice. But the mood seemed to have been broken. He’s silent as he slips into the passenger seat and buckles himself in. Only as they’re pulling out of the parking lot does he speak. “Is he right, Katie? I know I’ve been more of a burden than Reese intended. I don’t want what’s happening to me to cause so many problems, and if Reese knew, he’d probably let you go to another case. I know tonight isn't going to be an easy night either...not with what's been going through my mind all day... and...I don't want to put you through anything you shouldn't have to. ”

Ego

*Katie looks from Wyatt to Jason back to Wyatt again. Puting a hand on his arm she looks at him.* "Wyatt I am ok really. I got some fruit, and..." *For a moment Katie cringes at herself for lieing but she feels its a must to stop a fight from going down.* " Got some stuff to help Jason sleep too so She should be ok tonight and I can get some sleep as well." *Katie continues to look at Wyatt.* " I'll be ok I promise Wy." *Katie looks away.* "Now both of you stop throwing your Male egos around and lets go. Standing here isent helping me eather." *KAtie makes her way to the door.*

Argument

Wyatt’s jaw tightens just a little in a rare moment when he allows his frustration to show. “Yeah, well, my Dad has hardly seen you all day like I have, and I say you need a break.”

Jason’s eyes narrow slightly at the challenging tone. “You got a problem, Wyatt, just say so.”

“The only problem I have is that Katie hasn’t slept in two days,” Wyatt states flatly. “I’d much prefer if you were out of her hair for a few hours than going back to the hotel now and starting your crap all over again.”

Jason stands up a little straighter, cocking his head, his stare showing surprise and annoyance. “I commend your heroics, but you do realize that Katie has a mind of her own.”

“And a very fine one,” Wyatt counters. “But everyone needs a break, and I say you’re coming with me – alone.”

Jason bristles, both at the tone, and the idea of going to the mall. “Shopping can wait until tomorrow.”

“Then we’ll go just sit somewhere.”

“No. I’m going back to the hotel, and going to bed.”

“So you can just have another bad night and keep Katie up again?” Wyatt frowns. “I thought you’d be more considerate than this.”

Fed up, Jason glares at him. “Don’t make me pull rank on you, Wyatt.”

I would rather

*Katie looks from Wyatt and than to Jason back to Wyatt again. Know if Jason needed new clothing he would have to go to the mall.* "Well I would feel better if I went to. I mean your dad did say I needed to stay with Jason."

Change of plans?

Jason offers half a smile, not wanting to make a big deal out of the flower. It was the only way he knew how to let her know he’d really been sorry. But she certainly didn’t have a reason to be. “Don’t apologize…I deserved it.” He locks eyes with her, allowing his thoughts and emotions to be laid bare. “I feel like crap.” He forces a wry grin. “But what else is new?” He shakes his head. “Naw, my stomach and head have settled down a bit…I’m just tired and want to get this day overwith.” He holds up a filing folder. “Which is coming up fast.”

The rest of the afternoon does go fast, and soon it’s time to leave for the night. Jason makes his way across the main floor to meet Katie at the door, figuring since Hal’s truck is still in the shop, that he’ll be forced to be driven by Katie. He’s proud of her for getting her own car, but it does feel a little funny to be driven around.

As they’re leaving though, Wyatt catches up with them, ready to go as well. “Hey, you two. Listen, Jason, I know you’ve got some running around to do – you mentioned needing to go buy some clothes and such. How about I take you?” He gives Katie a sidelong glance. “And you can wait back at the hotel for us.”

Thank you

*Katie enters Jason's office and smiles.* " Hey J. Thank you for the flower. Its very pritty. I just wanted you to know I am sorry for being strong with my words before. I was just worryed. I dont want anything to happen to you." *Katie searches Jason eyes for a moment.* "How are you feeling?"

Yes?

Wyatt thoroughly enjoys his time with Katie, disappointed when they have to return to work. “Don’t worry. If Dad says anything, blame me.”
Walking Katie back into TJY, Wyatt returns the hug before watching her go her own way. He sighs deeply, not knowing if he should interfere or not. Perhaps he could have his own backup plan…

Pull out of it Jason…you know you can…your mind is playing tricks on you…it’s not real…. Jason struggles between reality and a vague world of skewed memories. He sits at his desk, staring at his papers, having been caught off guard again by a rampant memory, brought on by a name in one of the files. He scrunches his eyes tight, fighting the memory before it can erupt into a full fledged flashback.
The knock at the door is just what he needs, propelling him back to his office. He looks up quickly. “Yeah, it’s open.”

Back

*Katie smiles and nods.* " How about I show you the car and than we take your Jeep." *Katie heads to the door and outside with Wyatt. Walking over to her new car she smiles and points.* "This is it. Scott really helped alot." *Katie beams as she shows Wyatt the sun roof and every other little gadget it has. After she is done still beaming and full of energy again Katie stands and makes her way with Wyatt to the jeep.* " I am starving." *As the time goes by Katie has a very enjoyable lunch with Wyatt. Joking and teasing eachother, talking about the new car. Everything stay peacful in Katies mind and it feels good. The peace and quiet means Jason was doing well too....Finally after they are finish Katie relized 2 hours have gone by.* "Wy do you relize we have been here for 2 hours." *Katie cant help but laugh. Standing to streach she says.* " I guess we should get back before you father thinks I took a vacation on his time." *Its dosent take them long to get Back to TJY. Before going back in Katie goes to her car and peeks in the window smiling. It was hard to believe she had her own car now. When she is done she heads inside. One in she parts ways with Wyatt gives a small kiss and hug. Heading back to her desk. Once there she see the flower and smile. Katie's heart cant help but melt when she see it. Placing it in the water with the other one Katie heads to Jason's office and knocks on the door.*

Giving In

Wyatt raises his eyebrows, hearing the crash in Jason's office as well. But seeing Katie make no move to go back there, he doesn't make it his concern. Instead, he gets up and slings his arm around Katie, aiming her for the door. "Don't worry about it, alright? I'd rather you be late than not come at all. And I'm dying to see this new set of wheels you got." He gives her a squeeze as they get closer to the door. "But I'm only letting you drive if you promise to stay awake - you're as beautiful as ever, but your eyes aren't lying."

Jason raises his head from his desk, realizing that he'd dozed off. Surprisingly, he'd experienced no ill-effects from sleeping. Perhaps exhaustion did eventually override the nightmares.

Looking down, he realizes that he'd been in he middle of some paperwork that Reese needed that afternoon. He tries to concentrate, but his mind continuously wanders. He keeps thinking about what happened earlier...Katie's words thrown at him...the way he was treating her... it didn't make him feel good.

Sighing, Jason stands to get into his filing cabinet, attempting to clear his mind, but it didn't help much. Guilt was too busily at work in order for him to think of much else. Since all this started, he'd been concerned about being a burden to Katie...it was bad enough that he couldn't have made it through the night without her, and then to have laid upon her the added pressure of his health because of his own stupidity... it wasn't fair. He was being hypocritical, and he knew it. She was right...the flashbacks he'd have to work through...the depression he would have to trudge through...but his health was a responsibility he could handle right now. If he continued to neglect himself, Katie would have even more to pay attention to, and she didn't deserve that.

Jason slams his filing drawer shut in frustration. He didn't like the feeling of having his pride shattered, but right about now it was. He'd been an idiot...again. He still couldn't bring himself to share with anyone but Katie...she was the only friend he really trusted...and he still felt miserable...but if it would make Katie's life easier, he needed to start getting his act together if only in this one small area. Somehow he needed to get through this bout with the past again, but for now...at least he had one thing he could do.

Flopping back down in his chair, he picks up the phone, rolling his eyes that he can't leave and go do this task himself. But Reese wasn't about to let him leave the building alone.
He dials and waits...one rose, delivered to the gate to be taken to Katie's desk, with a simple note. "Sorry."
