Jason's shoulder drop a little, hearing that Katie still wasn't doing so great. Her statement of doing it for him just made him feel worse. Was he really the cause of a lot of this? In an attempt to fix things, had this just made things worse?
He wasn't going to give her anything negative to think about. He was miserable and work was going horribly. But she needn't worry about him too. Not when she had herself she needed to think about.
"Me? Oh, I'm great." His voice seems to smile. "Been working with Con a lot and keeping up with things around TJY. Concert went well the other night... had a lot of fun with that." He remembers how he felt about Nate being there, but he doesn't mention it. "Trooper and I went for a good long walk so he's getting his quality time in there."
Jason pauses, trying to think of something else to say, but smalltalk was evading him. What else was there to say? There wasn't anything else that had been going on... nothing of interest anyway, unless Katie wanted to know he'd cleaned his gun this morning, and did some paperwork.
The silence on the phone lingers. "So... yeah... things are good on my end." He then remembers something she didn't know, but if he didn't tell her and she found out later, she'd probably be mad at him. He opts for the casual route. "Oh, took a bullet in the leg earlier in the week, but it's no big deal. I'm already off crutches. Other than that, nothing too exciting happening."
Jeff is breathing heavily with all the strain of fighting, trying to sit up. Finally though, he collapses back down again into the pillow already damp with his sweat. He knows they're all just trying to help, but his mind was so foggy right now, he wasn't sure who he was fighting.
Closing his eyes a minute, he waves off Angel. "I'm fine... I'm fine..."
Too tired to struggle anymore though, he lies still as she looks him over. "I was just out with Katie was all. Went for a ride, then came back."
Luke scoffs from the corner. "Tell her what happened on the way back."
"So?"
"Tell her!"
"It's nothing new."
Luke rolls his eyes. "He told me he had to stop three times to throw up, then by the last time he passed out. Thankfully, his horse came back with him."
Jeff just closes his eyes, his pulse racing. He knew he was growing weaker, just like Rick said he would. "I just... just need to remember..."
"Gunner!!!" Reese slams down his phone and stands up from his desk, not caring about the papers that went flying. He stalks out of his office, a firm glare on his face as he heads for Gunner's cubicle. "Gunner! On your feet, this instant!"
Gunner pops up, though his eyes take longer to move from his computer screen to his boss. "Yes?"
"Don't yes me," Reese hisses. "You are hereby placed on suspension for misconduct outside of the Elite orders and brutality towards a civilian."
Gunner's eyes narrow. "Who called you?"
"Brown himself! The station got a call from a Dr. Timble who reported you forcing your way inside his home and holding him at knife-point, forcing him to divulge information protected by privacy laws!" Reese's face had grown red. "Are you out of your mind?!"
Gunner stares at him with little to no emotion, not reacting at all to the harsh tone. He just looks at him lamely. "I needed the information. So I went after it."
"What in blazes do you think you were doing?! What was so urgent that you couldn't even get a decent warrant?!"
"If I'da tried, I woulda been turned down like every other time," Gunner answers calmly. "I needed to find a man who JT treated about six months ago. The man is connected to the name of my parents' murderer."
Now Reese understand, but it does not lessen his anger any. It only seems to increase it. "Murderer?" He throws his arms in the air. "We have been through this time and time again! Your parents were not murdered, Gunner! It was an accident, and the driver was found!"
"It wasn't him, I-"
"You've been obsessing about this for years," Reese states flatly. "It is not an Elite case, the way you've gone about it has gone completely against the rules, you have paid no attention to direct orders, and you insist on living in the past! I've ordered you to stop before and so help me, I'm ordering you again."
"I won't stop until he's found."
"Who, Gunner?! Who?? There is no one! It's in your head! Can't you get that through your thick skull? There is no murder mystery here. It was an open and close case. You have no business digging around outside of your authority and certainly not outside needed warrants while brutally forcing information out of innocent people." Reese's glare is harsh, though his tone lowers some. "I'm sorry, but while you're on suspension, you will undergo mandatory therapy sessions so you can work through whatever it is you need to, to start living in the present. You need help, and that's all there is to it."
Gunner watches as Reese walks away, before plopping down in his chair, and turning back to his computer where he continues to scan information related to that which JT had led him to. He'd heard Reese's spiel before. And he would ignore it, just like he had before. He'd just be more careful. Suspension wasn't so bad.
Reese stomps back to his office, slamming the door shut and going straight for his phone. Picking it up, he finds Hope's number and dials, waiting for her to answer. "Hope... it's Mike Reese. I have your first job for you." He shakes his head. "I have an agent who needs help. You remember Gunner? He's got problems and I can't let them slide by any longer."

For You
Waking from her sleep to the sound of her phone going off Katie is to groggy to bother looking at the caller id. Answering the phone and hearing Jason's voice she is thrown off guard for a moment but recovers quickly.
Actually hearing Jason's voice talk to her and not the voicemail was nice. It was soft, and seemed to sooth her eyes as it hit them. Though things had been crazy Katie had missed it.
"Hey there! Yeah I got your message. I was going to call you back but I guess I fell asleep. I got woken up pretty early this morning, and I didnt even get my coffee."
Sitting up and leaning back in the bed against the wall Katie's head was throbbing but she tryed her best to ignore it and not let it bother her. She wanted to talk to Jason.
"Oh I am hanging in there the best I can I suppose."
She wasn't lieing she could be a lot worse. Could be a lot better to ut she was ok.
"I miss ys a whole lot but I am guessing you already new that since I dont care to be separated from ya. But I am trying my best to use to it for you."
Katie lets out a long sigh. She was trying.
"My head is still pretty foggy J...I wont lie to you and I still have a lot I need to heal. But slowly I am figuring it out I think."
Katie could hope Jason new what she as trying to say and could understand.
"There is so much going on right now with so many people getting hurt its just hard. How are you holding up?"
Entering the bunk house Angel shakes her head at Jeff and goes over to his bed side. She could tell he had a fever and his body was over tired.
"Jeff, you need to stop. We are all trying to help you and keep you comfortable. You need to let me check you over and get some rest your body is tilling you, you need it."
Angel takes a few things from her bad along with a setivite in case they needed it. If Jeff wouldnt rest on free will she would make him rest. She cared what happend to her friend.
"So please calm down and let me check you over ok? What have you been doing this morning?"
Angel looks to Luke and gives a nod along with Sparky. They would be standing by if she needed them.
Fighting
Jason stares after Misty as she leaves, her words bothering him more than he'd want to admit. Why should he call Katie back? He'd called her last. If she wanted to return the call, she would, right? For all he knew, she really didn't want to hear his voice. Maybe she was getting used to this whole thing and was liking being alone, without him.
Growling at himself, he picks up his phone again and dials. He waits, expecting to get her voicemail once again. When he actually hears her voice, he's too surprised and falters for a moment before getting his mind back on track.
"Hey, you." It felt better than he thought it would, to hear her voice. "I was just calling to... well, you know... talk. I guess you probably got my earlier message, and I don't know...." He leans back in his chair, not really knowing what to say, now that he'd gotten her. "I guess I just wanted to know if you were alright."
Sparky leads the way back to one of the bunkhouses, entering without knocking.
Luke is with Jeff, trying to keep him in bed as Jeff fights.
"I'm fine," Jeff mumbles. "Let me up."
"You came back on your horse unconscious," Luke emphasizes. "You're not going anywhere."
"I'm fine, dang it!" Jeff fights, but he's too weak even against Luke. Sweat runs down the sides of his face, providing visual evidence of a fever that had started.
Seeing Angel enter, Luke looks over to her helplessly. "He won't listen to me. We don't even know when he passed out or why."

Silent Prayer
Misty gives a small chuckle and cocks her head a little to the side.
"Your lonely? But your the master of all friends, you have them coming out of the wood work."
Standing Misty takes the papers from Jason's desk. Her comment was directed at him and seeing him the other day at lunch but other than that for now she wouldn't say anything. Jason had enough to worry about. Making her way to the door Misty stops and turns back to Jason.
"Call her Hotshot, I know you dont want to but call her and have a real conversation. If she ever needed you more now is the time. She is just to scared to admit it. Thanks for sighing theses. If you ever get to lonely you know where I am."
With that Misty leave the office to bring the papers to Reese.
Looking up from her desk with a start Angel see Sparky and gives a jump. She had been lost in paper work and hadnt even heard anyone come up to the office.
"What, Yes yes I will come give me a second to grab a few things."
Standing quickly Angel goes to get her bag putting a few things into it that she needs and might need. She could only fear the worse, but she hope that it wasnt time yet. A silent prayer goes up as she comes back out.
"Ok I am ready."
Faithful horse
Jason gives a little scoff as he focuses on the papers. "Me? I'm as fine as anyone can be with a boss who's got it out for him." He shakes his head in disgust. "I don't know what I ever did to your uncle, but for the first time in all my years here, I think he'd rather see me gone than have me on the team."
Finding the place for a signature, he scribbles it out and shoves the papers away, not wanting to read any more details than he'd already tried not to think about.
Looking down at Misty, he shrugs. "I'm fine... really. There's people out there with a whole lot bigger problems than me so... I shouldn't complain."
His eyes glances towards his cell phone that was still quiet. "Okay, so maybe I'm a little lonely. But who isn't?" He shoves the papers towards Misty. "Here. Keep Reese happy."
A figure slumps into bed. A horse is put away in the barn. Someone runs to the medical building. Another tries to rouse their friend.
"Angel?" Sparky pokes his head inside. "Angel?" Spotting her, he thumbs outside. "Jeff just got back... or should I say his horse brought him back. Passed out cold. We got him in his bunk but... I don't know... can you come?"
Here
"Just do it Rick, I am fine. Thank you."
Hanging up the phone Katie goes to the bed and sinks down letting her head fall into the pillow. Her head hurt, and Katie eyes felt like they were going to explode. Her mind raced with different things to think about and she just wanted them to quit down.
Closing her eyes Katie decide she would call Jason in about an hour she just needed to rest for a little bit. Than she would wake, and call Jason, she remanded herself she would call him once again.
Coming along the other side of the desk Misty leans over Jason just a little bit as she reachs her arm out.
"Mmm...its right..."
Flipping through a few of the pages Misty finally finds the three where he needed to sign.
"On these ones here..."
Moving away put still staying close to Jason Misty squats down so she is a little more eye level with Jason. She worried about her friend.
"How are you holding up? You've been quiet the last few days."
Easier
"Alright, alright!" Rick raises his voice slightly. "I'll do more searching, okay?" He sighs. "You have no idea how many times I've gone over this, but I'll do it again, if you promise me to start taking care of yourself, and I mean it."
Jason stares down at the papers Misty hands him, and he gives a little groan. "Oh yeah, thanks, let me relive the nightmare instead of someone else."
Rubbing a weary hand over his face, he knows Misty didn't deserve to be snapped at. "Sorry... I just..." He takes a deep breath. "Edgy. Sorry. I'll sign whatever you need me to, I don't need to go over it if you have already." He glances on the sheet, not finding the x. "Just show me where."
JT goes to the door as the doorbell rings, just having been ready for a nap. Opening it up, he's surprised to see Gunner. "Well hi there." It had been a few days, and JT had wondered if they'd really hear from him again. "What brings you back here?"
"Business." Gunner has a more serious look on his face than normal. "Look, I know you couldn't help me before and I understand. So this time I'm going to make it easier on you..."
Sign
Slowly going to Kyle Alice sits down next to him sinking into the couch. She didn't know what to day, or what to do. Right now Alice was in the dark waiting to know what Kyle was doing. She would follow him, she would continue to be the shadow it was just time to wait and see what happened now.
"Rick, just just listen to me here...it could be an advanced form of what Jason and I have."
Katie continues to passe the bunk house. If it was possible she would think for sure she would burn the floor down from how much she was walking across it back and forth.
"I've seen what the Agency can do, there technology and how they hurt people. They are capable of it and some of the stuff they have is even beyond our comprehension. From what I see with Jeff and how he's acting I think its a possibility."
Katie dosnt even bother with what Rick said last about taking care of herself. She was so focused on this and it felt right.
"Please Rick, just consider it or look into it, or check over the chip and capsule again. Please.."
Giving a knock on Jason's door Misty poked her head in carrying some paper work. Giving a small smile to Jason she enters.
"Hey Hotshot. Sorry to bother you. I just have some paperwork here I need you to sign."
Misty hated having to bring this paper work to Jason but it was long over do. She should of hate this paper work done with Katie first returned but she had, had so many other things.
"I know might not be the right time, but this is the paper work on Katie from when she came back. Her burns, cute, fingers, broken bones, bumps to the head. Everything is here, and I need you to go over it for me and sign by the X. But if you need me to come back, I can."
Undecided
Rick listens intently to Katie's theory, and then seriously starts to consider it, but stops. He shakes his head slowly, still holding the phone. "I'd say that's a good guess but... it leaves out one important factor... well two, actually."
He sighs, wishing he didn't keep having ideas that he knew wouldn't work. But he should at least explain. "First, we discovered what you and Jason have was passed down from someone who took the drug, which was new to Jeff's generation, not his parents'. And second... Jeff has no counterpart. Even if he did have the same problem, this thing doesn't manifest unless meeting up with the other half... not to mention, he was sick like this before and then was fine and now is sick again."
Rick pauses, absentmindedly looking at his computer screen and the data that was scrolling. "No, Katie... I think it's different... I think it's a different substance, the same as what made him sick before, but it's just been improved or... or something. Look..."
He leans his elbows on the desk. "...I know you're upset. And I'm still working. I haven't given up yet. But try and look after yourself right now, okay? You need to worry about you."
Jason sits waiting, tapping his fingers on his desk. He'd just gotten another tongue-lashing from Reese about sloughing off in work. He didn't get it... Jason was trying his hardest, and all of a sudden, he was getting the short end of the stick. Why? He got the funny feeling it had something to do with Katie, but hadn't dared ask.
"Blake's awake." Hunter stands in one of the waiting rooms with Kyle, Alice and a couple others from the team. "He's got a little memory loss, but can function okay. He'll just be here for a little while probably."
The others look down and an awkward silence settles over them. Jordan paces a little, under doctor's permission to be up and about for a short while. He finally looks around at the others. "I guess... we're all thinking it."
Kyle leans back against the wall, tired. Yes, they were all thinking it. "So where are the rest of you heading?"
It was blunt, but it got their attention. And they didn't know yet. A short discussion follows. Some would have to stay here for a few more days anyway to recover. Others might have to stay several weeks. Blake's older brother was coming down to be with him until he could go home. Jordan and Myla would probably go back to her parents for a little while. Hunter was undecided. ...Everybody all had mulled over options in their minds, but it would be a while before any could really decide what to do. But one fact remained: Break Out was officially over, indefinitely.
Kyle eases away from the group, wandering to a quiet corner with a couch. Sitting down, he winces a little, feeling the pain of all his stitches. At least it was a scar that would be hidden from view. The scar on his heart was hidden too, but not from the eyes of his shadow. She knew everything. And she also knew that he had no idea what he was going to be doing now.
Maybe
Standing again Katie pases the room as she talks with Rick only stooping once realizing what he must think and how she hadnt explained much.
"Oh yeah, well I am no more sick than I was before, but I still don't think its the medicine I think its me."
Stopping for a moment Katie remembers when Rick had found her the first time and how sick she had been. He had been so worried about her, and now he wasnt around so with her words she had to try and reasure him.
"Yeah...I...I'm hanging in there. Anyways I was wondering did you try and give Jeff what Jason and I are taking? I had a thought that maybe the Agency gave him whatever it was Jay, and Derek had or an advanced form of whatever J and I have. But with out a host for Jeff to let his feelings go to he becomes sick, just like Jason and I do. But maybe for him it progress slower. So if we give him some of the meds it would help?"
Worry
Rick's eyes widen a little, hearing Katie's voice. "Well hi there. I've always got time for you." He listens as he moves about the infirmary. Stopping, his voice is concerned. "Of course you can talk to me about that... is everything okay? Are you okay? It hasn't made you sick, has it?"
Watching his niece ride away, Jeff sighs. Once alone, he looks up at the morning sky. "Ya know, this would be a whole lot easier if she could get past that wall of hers and accept this thing. This is only making things harder."
Slowly, he dismounts his horse, leaning against him a moment before gaining his balance. Walking closer to the edge of the ridge, he eases down on the ground with a little groan. He was so tired... so very tired. This ride had been too much, but he'd thought it had been a good idea. Now he guessed he'd been wrong.
"I tried," he mumbles aloud. "But she just won't let go. She's got a family, friends, a future, and she's hanging on to me as though I'm her life. Doesn't she see past that?" He squints up at the clouds. "Doesn't she understand there's more to life than death? How can I show her? How can I help her through this? I just want to see her happy before I'm gone... can't You at least give me that before taking me away?"
Cold weather
Shaking her head and letting out a sigh Katie turns her horse on again. She didnt want to go, but she would anyways. Her own frustration was running high. She needed to call Rick anyways. Jeff didnt want her around anymore than fine. Maybe she shouldnt have come to start with anyways.
"Fine, whatever, let Rosetta know for me I wont be to lunch today in case she asks."
Making her way back to the ranch Katie breaks out into a trot, than a run making it back in record time. Putting the horse away, and giving her a rub down Katie makes her way out of the barn almost running into Dan. He tryed making conversation but she was in no mood to talk anymore and she had something on her mind she had to do.
Getting into the bunk and seeing her phone flashing Kaite listens to the voicemail. Sinking down on the bed her heart races as she listens to Jason's phone call. Kyle was ok and that was good but the others were hurt. Details were vage and she wanted to know more she would call Jason back after she called Rick.
Dialing the number Katie waits untill she hears the famiure voice on the other line.
"Hey Rick, its Katie. I was wondering if I could talk to you about the medicine you gave Jason and I, if you have time that is. If not than I can call back."
Sitting on the edge of the bed with Bret Charlotte puts her arm around his neck snuggling close to him. She missed him at night, and she missed waking up to him so anytime she could get to cuddle close she did.
"Fall is coming again, it is getting pretty busy down at the caves again. Everyone is relizing the cool weather is coming again and winter will be here soon so they are trying to get what they can in."
Giving another kiss to Bret Charlotte looks at him in the eyes as she smiles. Her eyes twinkled as she gazed apon her husband.
Today, my dear husband I am all your. I have the rest of the day off. So we can watch a movie, play a game, I could get Con down here to throw you over his shoulder and seal you away for me...or we can just watch TV.
Go on
"Mmm..." Bret returns Charlotte's kiss, grinning up at her. "Better now."
He chuckles as he receives the little teddy bear and gives it a pat on the head. "Oh good, someone to keep me company."
A sigh comes out, but Bret wobbles his head so-so. "I'm okay. Just wanna get out of this blasted bed. Doc said in a day or so they might get me up walking and see how that goes. So far they've just been sticking to therapy on my leg while I'm still in bed."
His neck felt better at least, and his shoulder was healing though was still fairly painful. His spirits were high though, under the circumstances. "And what are you up to, today? They've sure been working you a lot of hours down at the caves. Business must be good."
A weary sigh escapes Jeff's lips. "Katie... you're not 'leaving me behind' if you go ten minutes ahead of me."
He swings his head around to look at her. "Now do as I say and go back to the ranch." He nods towards the trail. "Go on."
Leave you Behind
Katie turns her horse around and comes along side Jeff. She might not want to talk about anything that was going to happen with Jeff, or anything else in her life but Katie loved him.
Coming into the hospital Charlotte brings a little stuff animal and some flowers for Bret. He'd been here for a while now, and she hoped he would be able to come home soon. Every day she would bring new flowers from her flower garden at home to at least brighten up the room today.
Entering the room Charlotte smiles as she lays her eyes on her husband. Though things wernt prefect she loved her life with Bret, and was excited to live even more.
"Hey you.."
Charlotte holds the little bear our from Bret as she leans down to give him a kiss.
"..how ya holding up today?"
So yeah
Jeff looks to Katie, disappointment flashing in his eyes. She hadn't heard or paid attention to a word he'd said. He'd thought all night about what he would say to her... about any words that he could leave with her that she could remember when he was gone. And they hadn't done a bit of good. He knew it wasn't her fault... he knew it was the hurt that was blinding her... but if he couldn't get through to her, then there was nothing more he could do, and he has lost.
Hearing her call him as she headed back towards the trail, he shakes his head. "You go on, Katie. I think I'll... stay here a little while by myself."
He turns his gaze back out over the landscape to see that the fog was starting to lift. "If anyone asks, I'll be back in just a bit."
Jason turns his cell phone in his hand, debating whether or not to call. This had been one long morning already, and it had barely started. First Phil had called, then Rick had talked to him... It was too much going on at once. And now Reese was waiting for the report he was supposed to have done the night before.
Finally flipping his phone open, he dials and waits. His shoulders drop when he reaches Katie's voicemail. "Hey, Hero, it's me... Um... I just talked to Rick and he told me about Jeff. Guess I just wanted to say hang in there or something... I know you were close to him."
Jason rolls his eyes. He couldn't talk straight while leaving a message if he were paid to. "Oh, and I wanted to tell you before you heard from anyone else that Kyle is okay. There was an accident up in Minnesota with Break Out and some of the team was hurt, but Kyle's alright. Phil called me earlier. So... yeah. Um..."
He pauses, not even knowing how to end his one-sided conversation. "Nothing new here, just... thought I should call. So... yeah. Bye."
Make a Call
Going along the trail Katie didn't mind the quiet she hadn't felt all like coming to start with but she had for Jeff. The quiet was almost nice though and she never felt like she had to speak when she was around her Uncle Jeff anyways.
Trail of Fog
Kyle gazes into Alice's eyes, so many words going unspoken. "How could I ignore a gift from God like you?" He shakes his head slowly. "I don't know I ever deserved someone like you."
Sighing deeply, he stares down at the piano. "I hope the ends of the earth are better than this. I just... don't know where to go from here. I've worked so hard at not going home... I just... I'm not ready to yet. I haven't... found myself yet." He had... he'd thought he had... and now it had been ripped from him once again.
His eyes focus on the ivory keys. No... he still felt lost. There was nothing now... or was there? His fingers stroke a set of keys. How long would he continue to deny his heart? Words from his grandmother ran in his head. Was he to deny what he felt then?
Picking up Alice's hand, he gives it a soft kiss. "Thank you... I hope someday I give you what you've given me."
Jeff could tell that Katie didn't want to go, and he fought with whether he should really be making her do it or not, but he finally decides to just continue as planned.
It takes him a moment to mount up and get settled in the saddle. He'd purposely chosen one of the easiest-going horses in the barn - an older gelding with a mellow temperament.
Turning the horse towards a side trail, he points ahead. "I don't know... let's try down this way and see where it takes us."
Taking the lead, he doesn't talk much. One might have thought there was something specific he wanted to discuss, but oddly, he remains quiet, simply guiding the horse around a winding trail. The fog was still thick, and one couldn't see very far ahead. Even for someone familiar with the ranch, they might suddenly realize they weren't quite sure where they were. At some point, it seems the trail has been lost and Jeff urges the horse around trees and over logs, seemingly way off course. He still says nothing though.
After an hour, the trees are cleared, and they are going across an open field. Were they in the west pasture? Maybe the north one? It felt a little higher here.
The going is slow, and sometimes Jeff has to stop and just rest a moment to collect himself before moving on. But eventually, the fog seems to be thinning out. They're much higher than one would have thought, and suddenly things come into view. They were above the fog now on an open ridge towards the foothills. It was a secluded spot that was rarely visited because it was rather dangerous, right close to the ridge. But the fog had hidden the danger.
Jeff reins in his horse and stops, staring out towards the ranch that was enveloped in the white-ish mist. For the longest time, he just waits, leaning on the saddle horn, his hat tipped back a little.
Finally, he speaks. "You know... Sometimes in life we never know how close to the edge we really are." He glances back at the disappearing trail, then out over the ranch again. "If we knew, we might be too frightened to keep on walking. But God provides a fog for us so we don't tuck tail and run. All we know we have to do is follow Him because He knows the way. We could be just inches from falling to our death, but if we stick to Him, He won't let us fall."
He pauses, his heart and mind wandering. "If we knew what lay ahead, we might give up. If we could read the future, we might never try new things or go through with what we should. We would want to avoid the pain and sorrow altogether. But... if we did that... if we decided not to take the foggy trail... we'd never end up on a peaceful plateau."
Jeff straightens and spreads out his arms, demonstrating the very place they were. Taking a deep breath, he looks over to his niece. Every fiber in his being was fighting to not give in to his current exhaustion, so that he could keep this time with her.
"You're on that trail, Katie... and you can't see left, right or what's up ahead. You have no idea where you are, even though you thought you were on course. Don't step off the path. God's guidance is the only thing that will bring you to your plateau. It doesn't matter what other people say... it doesn't matter what advice they give, or what they do in their own lives. This is your time... this is your time to close your eyes and let God lead. He's not going to reveal what's up ahead until you've made it there."
Tears form in Jeff's eyes, but his voice remains strong. "You're the closest thing I'll ever have to a daughter, Katie. I know I haven't always been there, and I know lately we've been so far apart. But I just want you to know that I'm proud of you. I'm proud of the woman you've become... in your own life... as child of God. And I know that... that you're going through the fog right now and you feel lost. But if I can leave you with just one thing, it would be my plea to you to keep on walking. I know you can... and I know you have that strength deep down. If I could walk through the pain for you, I would. But I can't. I'm on my own foggy trail that is coming to an end. But you... you've got so much ahead of you. Don't let the world spoil who you've become."
He swallows hard, the sincerity flooding his voice. "I can't... leave... without knowing you'll try. Without knowing that you'll give it your best shot. Promise me, Katie... promise me you won't give up and that you'll walk that trail no matter what happens."
Now of Never...
Wrapping her arms gently around Kyle Alice leans her head on top on his as she gently still holds his hand. If asked a few months ago if she would of left Kyle her answer would of been no, but it would of been no for a different reason. Now Kyle was no long just a story, she was much more and even if she had nothing to write about him, she would still follow.
"I'm not going anywhere Kyle, I'll follow you to the ends of the earth."
Turning her head a little so Alice could look into Kyle's eyes she whips the small tear away as she runs her fingers down his cheek.
"Its never been about Jetstream, or Break Out Kyle, its been about you, only you."
"I really dont feel much like doing riding today Uncle Jeff."
Katie gives a little shake of her head and catchs the look in Jeff's eye. She DIDNT want to ride today she just wasnt in the mood, but something tugged at her heart and told her it was now or never. Her heart broke, and shattered into a million peaces if it was possable to do that for a second time.
"Giving me a second and I will be right out."
Going back into the bunk house Katie looks around for her shoes and throws them on before heading out again and coming around to the horse and mounting up. Taking a momant to throw her now long hair back into a ponytail Katie trys to give a smile to Jeff.
"Where we going?"
9/8/09
Will you...
Jeff turns as he hears the door and stares up at Katie. "Yes... yes, I believe I have gone completely mad." He nods and holds up the reins again. "But I'd rather be loony and live the way I want until the last moment, than realize what I'm doing and not do it."
Though he held a teasing tone, there was a seriousness in his gaze. If one looked carefully, they might notice Jeff shaking slightly, but he ignored it. "Crazy or not, I want to spend some time with my niece, and you better not deprive me of that. So go get your boots on before I throw up all over your saddle - and you know I would, just for spite."
For some reason, Kyle is not startled by Alice's presence. He hadn't known she was there, yet... somehow he wasn't surprised.
His eyes stay down as he watches her hand slide up over his. Her touch was so soft and warm over his rougher skin. She had sacrificed a huge chunk of her year to follow him. To follow a story? No... to follow his journey. It didn't matter where he went or what he was doing... she was there... his shadow.
Letting his hands fall from the keyboard, he holds Alice's hand for a few moments, still remaining quiet. It had been a long time since he felt this lost. At least when he'd left JetStream, he'd had somewhere to go. But now... everything was shattered. Break Out could be no more, for a long time at least.
Slowly, Kyle leans over, his head resting on Alice's shoulder. He'd tried to be so strong... he'd tried to be the tough one... the shelter. But today... he needed the comfort too. And he wasn't too proud to admit it.
Closing his eyes, his thumb runs back and forth on Alice's hand, the melody of his song running through his mind over and over again. "I don't know what to do," he whispers. "I tried so hard... and now... it's all gone."
Another tear silently escapes his eye to roll down his cheek. Alice was the only one he would allow himself to cry in front of. His heart hurt. "Will you stay with me... even though Break Out is over?"
Someone New
Hearing Kyle leave earlier that morning Alice had followed him staying far enough behind he didnt know because she new maybe he wanted some time alone. After everything she new she probably would herself, but at the same time she still worried about him, didn't want to be alone herself, and just wanted to make sure he was safe.
Watching as he walked Alice was still sore herself but kept a nice pace behind Kyle. Her heart broke as she listend to him outside the auditorium. He wanted to find his place, and though she hadnt agreed with him leaving for the reason he did it was his reason, a part of him, and she had supported him now to only watch it being taken away.
Following him inside of Alice stays along side the stage just watching Kyle for a long moment. Listing to the music and the words to his song Alice closes her eyes swaying to the music for a moment. Finally she herself makes her way on stage coming along side Kyle hoping not to scare him. Sitting down next to him on the bench as the song comes to an end Alice rests her hands on top of his. A smile on her face and her never dieing energy was in her eyes even though her body wouldn't let her jump around right now.
"I still love how you sound when you sing, and how lost you get when you play. Its something I think I could listen to none stop and not have a problem with it."
Running her fingers along Kyle's and as his were over the keys Alice keeps her gaze on Kyle's eyes. Most would say she was crazy for following Kyle around, but Alice believed it was God's will. He gave her a chanse to love again and what a better man than Kyle.
Hearing the bang on the window Katie rolls over in bed. Was it morning already? It felt like she had only maybe fallen asleep and now, now she was being woken up.
Sitting up in bed Katie squints at the alarm clock, it was just after seven. She had only been to sleep for about two hours now. But hearing Jeff call her again Katie gets out of bed and throws on some jeans and a over sized hoodie. Stepping out on the pouch and leaning over the railing to see Jeff.
"Are you crazy, its only seven twenty. I haven't even had my coffee eather. I think you have gone mad."
A small smile forms on Katie's lips though by most who wasnt looking for it you would never be able to tell.
Bring me to my knees
A look of relief mixes with surprise as Jeff is joined by Katie. He returns a gentle hug, giving her shoulder a squeeze. "It's good to be home."
Just looking at her a moment, he gives her a knowing nod. He wouldn't ask how she was. He knew she felt like crap. He wasn't going to tell her it would be okay - that's what everyone always said. For now... for now, he would simply be here.
Talk around the table is fairly quiet this evening. Not everyone knew about Jeff's condition yet, but somehow, it was sensed, and the atmosphere was just a little strange. And like any night, everyone disperses, each to their own direction, each to their own mind's thoughts.
And in a place so very far away, on a much cooler night than Nevada, lives have suddenly been changed... drastically.
Kyle doesn't move as Alice approaches. The whole side of his face was bruised and swollen, making it look as though he'd been in a fight. It hurt to move in any direction, the tremendously long gash reminding him that it would be a while before he would be completely healed.
Moving the arm that hurt the least, he slides Alice's hand down to intertwine his fingers in hers, his eyes still focused on the dark window. "I'm okay," he answers quietly. "Angry... confused." She was one of the few he would admit that to.
His grip tightens around her hand as the accident flashes through his mind again. "I'm just glad you're okay too." Thought it hurt, he bent over to give the top of her head a soft kiss. "I'm tired... I guess I'll get some sleep."
Slowly making his way over to the bed, he gradually lies down, trying to relax his sore muscles. His eyes are already closed as exhaustion finally has it's way. "See you... in a while," he mumbles to Alice.
And it was a while. A body knows when it must rest, even when a mind is stubborn, and eventually, sleep must come. And come it does. When the morning rays begin to peek over the horizon, the day dawns and the stirring of activity begins.
Jeff pauses in his route to take another deep breath, steadying himself. The horses wait patiently with him, and he pats the mare's neck. "I'm coming... just give me a sec."
Once the wave has passed, he continues, his boots crackling on the gravel drive. Both horses follow willingly, despite the early morning hour. A light fog had descended over the ranch, bringing a sense of cool relief.
Reaching the bunkhouse, Jeff goes to the window instead of the porch. His cowboy hat brim is in the way so he can't look inside, but he bangs his palm on the pane. "Katie, get your lazy hind end out of bed!"
Shouting took more energy than he thought it would, but he doesn't care. Instead of stopping, he holds up the waiting horses' reins. "You coming with me or what??!"
"Anybody seen Kyle this morning?" A few of the Break Out team had gathered in Jordan's room for a short while, all trying to adjust before discussing what they were all to do next. Going their separate ways was inevitable, but no one wanted to say it. Chloe looks to Hunter, her question still hanging in the air.
Hunter shakes his head. "I looked in his room, but he wasn't there. I thought he'd be here."
It only takes a few moments to realize that Kyle was the only one on the team not accounted for. A quick check at the nurses station proved that he had slipped out earlier. The group decides that perhaps he just needed some time to think, and trusted that he would take care of himself and be back.
Kyle trudges down the sidewalk, his eyes on the lookout for the street signs the nurse had pointed him towards. It wasn't a huge town, so it shouldn't be hard to make it to the community auditorium. That's where Break Out should have been later on... but the cancellation had already been announced.
It took him nearly an hour, and he hurt from head to toe, but finally, Kyle finds the building he was looking for. Standing outside for several minutes, he just stares at the double doors. The morning was chilly, and he pulls his jacket a little tighter around himself, despite the pain it caused to his side.
Emotions started to bubble to the surface and he grit his teeth. Eventually, he looks up ate the sky, giving it an angry glare. "I thought this was what you wanted for me!" he shouts. "I thought I'd finally found my place! Why did you have to take it away?!"
He chokes on his own words. "What am I supposed to do now, huh? I've worked so hard to get here, and then you just flush it down the toilet! Why??!"
It hurt too much to yell anymore, and he hangs his head. The words start to run through his mind again. "No... no, stop it!" He puts his hands to his head, but the words wouldn't stop. The melody persisted. "No! I gave that up! Stop!" But it wouldn't. One would think he was a madman, shouting to the chilly wind. But it was only an aching soul, longing for that which had been left behind.
Kyle can't take it any longer. With a growl of frustration, he heads for the doors, expecting them to be locked. Surprisingly, they open with ease. Slipping inside, he takes a look around and wanders down the hall, almost feeling as though he were being pulled by an invisible force.
Rounding a corner, he comes to the auditorium. It was a fair size with seating for many people. A small stage was down center, dark and in the shadows. Not worrying about whether or not he was trespassing, Kyle walks down the aisle, his steps quiet and slow. Reaching the stage, he stops. To the right was a baby grand piano, apparently used for all kinds of occasions. His fingers twitched. The longing in his heart became unbearable.
Stepping up onto the stage, his footsteps echo on the wooden floor. The bench creaks as he sits down. The small lamp clicks on as the only source of light.
Staring down at the keys, Kyle sits for the longest time. Until finally... finally he lifts his hands. His pulse raced and his palms were sweaty. But the instrument was in tune, and he could no longer resist the gift that had been given to him at birth. Music.
Kyle's fingers moved along the piano keys as if he'd never had a break from playing the keyboard. The minor tones echoed through the empty room, bouncing off the walls and slipping into the deserted seats. The darkness minimized the size of the room, all focus brought under the one small light that lit the side of the stage.
And as the music builds, more and more emotion is spilled into the notes, Kyle's heart poured out into the melody that had never been heard before. Words from his soul escape his lips, despite the physical pain he was in.
I come here tonight.
With this broken heart of mine.
I'm sitting here in pieces,
Without the end in sight.
I don't understand the world.
I don't understand the crimes.
But it hurts inside,
Oh, it hurts inside.
Repair my brokenness.
Bring me to my knees.
Show me the impossible.
Open my eyes to your wondrous ways,
Restore my broken heart.
Bring me to my knees.
Show me your loving power.
I just want to feel You here with me,
Lord I need You now.
Oh Lord... I need your love.
With Kyle's eyes closed, silent tears run down his face. But his voice never wavers, growing even stronger with every word. In the shadows of the far corner, ears pick up the song and eyes zero in on this musician. But this audience of one would not reveal himself.
My strength is all but gone.
I've been wounded in the war.
A soldier in the battle,
In the game I'm just a pawn.
I don't understand the pain.
I don't understand the whys.
But it's killing me,
Oh, it's killing me.
Mend my wounded soul.
Bring me to my knees.
Show me the impossible.
Open my eyes to your wondrous ways.
Restore my broken heart.
Bring me to my knees.
Show me your loving power.
I just want to feel You here with me,
Lord I need You now.
Oh Lord... I need your love.
Kyle's world had tumbled down around him, and this was all he could do to cope. His hands still moved along the ivory keys, the notes smooth and mellow.
Bring me to my knees.
Let me eyes see what's possible.
Open my heart to your wondrous ways.
Restore this wounded soul.
Bring me to my knees.
Show me eternity.
I just want to feel you here with me,
Lord, I need You now.
Oh Lord... I need your love.
The melody fades into the darkness until once again, silence ruled. Kyle's head hangs and his hands retreat to sit in his lap. There was no motivation to go on. No motivation to leave. His future had just been completely wiped out and he had no idea where he'd go from here
Its good
Standing in the waiting room for a long moment Alice looks out the window watching the rain fall down. So much had happend in the matter of hours, so many life had changed. Many were ok, but many were still hurt, Blake was where Alice's was the most next to Kyle. Saying a quick prayer for Blake Alice turns and lets out a sigh heading over to Kyle.
"Hey, How are you holding up?"
Alice lays a gentile hand on Kyle's arm. She still hurt all over, but her worry layed with more people right now.
Slowly making her way back to the dinning hall Katie drags her feet. She'd stayed out in the barn a little longer than she had planned but her eyes had become heavy and she finally fell asleep. Now it was close to dinner and she new people would be worried.
Entering the dinning hall Katie looks around the room feeling the heat come to her face as everyone turns to look at her. She new she had caused a scene earlier but now she was trying not to let it bother her.
Moving slower than normal Katie makes her way over to the empty seat next to Jeff. Giving a small smile to him Katie reaches out and gives him a hug before turning to her plate.
"It's good to have to home Uncle Jeff!"
Time alone
The paramedic is very gentle, continuing to talk to both Alice and Kyle, though Kyle had stopped responding. Joined by another medic, the two get Kyle on a stretcher, and lead Alice to one of the waiting ambulances too. Below the ditch on a small plateau, a helicopter lands. There were those that needed more immediate help than a driven vehicle could provide.
Everything seemed to move by in a blur. Voices, lights, motion, noise. It all felt like a bad dream, but it was so very real. The scenery speeding by, the sudden stops and the hospital staff rushing to meet the vehicles.
The lights inside were bright and the chaos seemed to persist. There were questions and orders and more questions. Everyone seemed to be split up and no one knew where the others were.
Until finally, things start to slow. The ER seemed full with parts of Break Out who were not as badly injured - those who were together would not be admitted, once they were looked after. Hunter had some cuts and bruises, but otherwise was fine. Chloe had received a badly sprained ankle to go along with her scrapes. Shawn came away with fifteen stitches on the side of his head and a fractured wrist. The doctors looked after Alice as well, bandaging the bump to her head and wanting her to stay for a few hours just to make sure she would be alright from the light concussion and the cuts and bruises that were cleaned and dressed.
Some of the team was not as fortunate.
Heath had broken his leg in two places and would have to go through surgery in the morning to repair some of the damage. He would be staying in the hospital for at least a week. Jordan had a broken collar bone, but it was the head injury the doctors were concerned about, admitting him for at least one night, preferably two. Myla had broken her arm and several ribs - a neck injury would keep her fairly immobile, along with a badly sprained wrist. Kyle had made it out with a couple broken ribs and a gash that ran from his shoulder and down his side, requiring more stitches than anyone would care to admit. More stitches were needed for a deep cut above his eye, but the doctor was confident that after tonight, he would be free to go.
Blake was the worst, and had yet to wake up. Internal injuries had been the greatest concern, on top of a dislocated shoulder. He had already endured several hours of surgery and now was resting, but the doctors did not know when he would wake up. How long he would have to stay was unknown.
Kyle stood at the window of the small room he was sharing with Heath. He had refused to lay in bed, despite the nurse's orders, and had also refused hospital garb. Putting up enough of a fight, the doctor had given up, figuring he would probably wind up ripping stitches out if they tried to force him into anything. So now he stood, looking out over the dark city, his eyes blank as his mind tried to block out his pain. He'd heard about the others, and was waiting to see them when he could. But nothing would change the one unspoken fact: Break Out's year was over.
Back in the ER, one of the doctors explains to that part of the group that they are free to visit their friends, and gives them the room numbers. It was a strange quiet that came after that. No one really knew what to do or what to say. Only Jordan seemed to know exactly who he needed to talk to - his wife - and was allowed to do so before being returned to his own room for the night.
Jeff sighs deeply, accepting Rosetta's comfort. The only problem was that it wasn't going to be okay... not right now anyway. He grits his teeth in an attempt to control his emotions and nods. "Yeah... okay. I'll let her go. I just... want to spend time with her when she's ready. Sometimes you just..." He stops, turning to look into his sister's eyes. "Sometimes you just realize how important spending time together is when life is so... short."
Feeling dizzy, he relents to turning back inside and finding a seat at the table where he would spend lunchtime and much of the afternoon...
"...did you find her?" Jeff looks up expectantly at Mick, who had joined the group in the dining hall for supper, though he was late.
Mick shakes his head. "No... but I think I might know where she is."
Jeff should have been in bed hours ago, according to the way he felt, but he'd stayed in here all day...waiting. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, I heard some movement up above the loft in the barn." Mick eases down in a chair, turning to give his wife a kiss as he's given his plate of supper.
"And you didn't go look for her??"
Mick sighs and looks back to Jeff. "No. I figured she needed the time alone. She's fine, Jeff... she knows how to take care of herself around here."
Jeff looks down and shoves away his food that he'd barely touched. Maybe he should just go to bed. He'd already done enough damage for one day.
Oh Where Oh Where
A figure takes the stage, tonight is was requests she took for songs and she had her line up ready. Another day, another dollar for a good reason. The dress she wore was a long red strapless that flowed down to the ground. She had gotten use to doing this two or three times a week now it no longer bothered her, and the nerves were that but not like the use to be. Holding the mic she waits as the band starts to play, continuing to wait for her intro. Slowly the words come as her voice becomes stronger....
Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took him away from me
He's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I'll leave this world
We were out on on the road, I was in my car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road Straight ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop So I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screamin tires
The busting glass
The Painfull scream that I heard last.
Continuing to hold Kyle close Alice musters a little chuckle though it hurts a little bit. Everything felt like it was spinning at the moment, her own eyes wanted to close but she couldn't let them. She could have a concussion, sleeping would be bad, not only that she had to be awake for Kyle.
"Yeah. Once we will go once we get a chance. Take a break and get to a fair or even an amusement park. We..will have a great time."
Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took him away from me
He's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I'll leave this world
When I woke up The rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm falling into my eyes
But some how I found my baby that night
I lifted his head He looked at me and said
Hold me darling just alittle while
I held him close I kissed him our last kiss
I found the love I knew I had missed
but now he's gone even though I hold him tight
I lost my love, my life that night
"You gotta hold on Kyle...ok..."
Alice breaks in a shart breath as she runs a hand through Kyle's hair. His words sinking into her and a tear forms in her eye. Please God, Don't take him from me too.
"I'm not going to leave Kyle, I promise. I am going to be right here for you, I always will when you call my name."
Choking on her words and playing Kyle's words in her head it was almost like one love had finally die, was let go, and now a new worm feeling was entering her heart only to once again maybe be lost.
"I love you to Kyle hang in there for me ok? Don't you leave me too."
Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took him away from me
He's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
ooooooooooooooooo
oooooo
oooooooooo
ooooooooooooo
Leaning her head down onto Kyle's matted wet hair Alice dosnt care she just wanted to be close to Kyle. To feel him and let him feel her. As the parametric comes over and shines the light on them Alice closes her eyes a little, the light was bright and her eyes were glossy reflecting the light.
"No..No its just us. I...I don't, please just worry about him first. He needs more help than me. Please don't let him die."
Alice's body felt cold, as the tingles continues through her body but she didn't know what hurt more her body or her heart.
OOOOOOO
OOOOOOO
OOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOOOOOO
...As the music slowly dies away the voice slowly dies as well, as the melody becomes softer and softer. Finally the song was over, and the crowd cheered enjoy the voice the heard, enjoying the song. Slowly giving a wave and a big smile the figure moves off the stage.
Moving slowly beside her brother Rosetta rests her hand on Jeff's shoulder keeping her brother calm. She hurt, and felt bad for Katie Rosetta new she would take it hard.
"Katie has always kept to herself when she is upset. Since she was a little girl. I am sure she had already found someplace to hide. I don't know what to do for her Jeff."
Looking over at her brother she new he felt bad, though she couldnt see as deep as Katie could she could still read people well and new her brother hated seeing Katie like this too.
"I'll have Mick go look for her if she doesn't come back in an hour to lunch ok? It will be ok Jeff."
Running past Trent Katie doesn't even stop she aimed for the barn. As a child this was her hideaway so no one could find her when she was upset and with any luck no one new about it yet.
Opening the door the tears still streamed from Katie's eyes as her head pounded. Sipping past most of the ranch hands so she wasn't seen Katie makes her way all the way to the back. Moving some bords Katie pulls a ladder down and climes up moving a few more boards to open a room in the roof.
Climbing up and moving the boreds back in place Katie crawls across the floor before standing. Looking around the room she was thankful no one had found her hideaway. Paint splatterd the walls, and string objects hung from the ceiling. A few posters lined the wall and a arm chair was in on corner. Making her way over to the chair Katie sinks down in it curling up. Continuing to try and mind darted from one thing to the next as her mind couldnt land on anything.
Why did this have to happen to her? It never settled down, from one thing to the next it never seemed to end and it almost felt like she was losing everyone, and the light at the end of the tunnel was moving farther away.
Paramedics
"Katie, wait-" Jeff stands abruptly, bumping the table and sending his glass of juice all over the place. Giving a little growl of frustration, he sprints after his niece. Reaching the doorway though, his body just doesn't want to give any more. He doubles over, feeling the same wave of pain and sickness that was making him weaker by the day.
Unable to follow after Katie, he slams a fist into the doorframe. "Dang it!" He was still trying to deal with this whole thing himself... to come to terms with the fact that he was dying. How could he even try to be there for his niece? It wasn't fair.
Tears spring into his eyes as for the first time with this whole thing, he feels absolutely helpless.
Straightening up, he tries to maintain his composure in front of his sister. "Somebody should find her. She shouldn't be alone like this."
Trent is just on his way from his bunk to the dining hall. He usually went a little earlier than everybody else, so he could slip away sooner. But as he walks, he's almost run into by Katie.
"Whoa, Katie? What..." He stops his route and looks at her in bewilderment.
Kyle's eyes are half closed as he fights to stay conscious for Alice. Something resembling a laugh comes out. "Yeah, we... we sure caused quite a scene, didn't we?"
Starting to shiver, he moves in closer to Alice, fighting the strange cold numbness he felt all over. "I wanna go again... to the ferris wheel." He lifts his hand, and twirls his finger as if he can see the ride just in the distance.
Swallowing hard, he licks some blood from his lip again. "Stay with me, Alice," he mumbles. "Don't... leave yet. Too much... other... to live..." He pats her leg. "I love ya."
His head slides down to her shoulder as his shivering worsens. "I don't wanna go to work... I'm so... tired..."
Suddenly, more lights are on the scene and several paramedics scramble from two ambulances. Two slide down the ditch towards the bus, while others tend to the other vehicles and the semi that had somehow wound up on the other side of the road.
"Down here!" someone shouts. "We got a bus full. Bring a stretcher!"
"How many?!"
"Call for the helicopter!"
A paramedic appears near Alice's jeep, spotting her and Kyle on the ground. He kneels by them quickly, shining a light on them. Seeing Kyle's eyes closed, he directs his questions to Alice. "Where are you two injured, ma'am? Are there any more people in this car?"
Something deeper
Looking into her Uncles eyes Katie blinks as her own eyes start to tear a little. This couldnt happen, not to Jeff. When Katie needed shelter he was there, when Katie needed strength he was there. If he was gone, than that was another person who went out of Katie's life.
"No..."
Katie backs away from Jeff just a little, looking from Rosetta than back to Jeff.
"...You...You have to go back. Rick has to look harder, he needs to try hard there is a cure. You, you cant give up...You cant just roll over and die! You have to go back Uncle Jeff...You have to go back now."
Tears sprang into Katie's eyes that she couldn't control. All the tearm oil inside of her bubbled as her stomach churned, and her own sick feeling rose.
Watching her niece Rosetta's heart broke, for Katie, for herself, and for Jeff. Everything happened so fast. Stepping a little closer to Katie Rosetta set her hand on her arm.
"Katie you got to calm down, your going to make youself sick."
Looking at her aunt Katie pulls her arm away from Rosett and shakes her head.
"You have to tell him to go back Aunt Rosetta..."
"Katie...home is where Jeff belong to be with the ones he loves...to.."
"NO! He's your own brother and your going to let him stay here and die, You...NO!"
Turning from Rosetta and Jeff Katie sprints from the dinning hall and down the steps the pounding of her feet matching the pounding of her heart. Where Katie was going she didnt know, she just wanted to get away. She had to get away. Another person was sleeping through her fingers that she could of saved.
Crawling out of the jeep Alice hurt all over as she moved next to Kyle. Seeing a few of Kyle's own wounds Alice wraps her arms around him trying to put pressure where it looked like he was bleeding.
"I'm...alive. Its going to be ok Kyle."
Alice could hear the sirens in the distince. Help was on the way, the just had to hang in there.
"Keep talking to me Kyle...lets keep letting eachother know we are ok. The paramedics are almost here I can see the....lights."
Giving a shakes from the cold Alice held Kyle closer as she gave a painful chuckle.
"Remember when we went on the fairs wheel? That was great fun, I thought they were going to yell at us so bad though."
Thinking for a long moment as she looks over the menu Sapphire doesn't answer Gage right away. She mulled over his words for a long moment. Gage was differnt from most people she new, and though he'd done some bad things she could see something deeper even if it was hidden. He wasnted to at least try and change and that in itself ment alot.
"Because, you are my friend Gage. I do care, and sometimes friendship dosnt always make sense but its something you cant stop."
Leaning back in the chair for a moment Sapphire's eyes meet Gages.
"I've always been a little on the nerdy strange side. Not many people like to be around me, because I am differnt and have many strangs quirks. I guess I am an out case. But your differnt Gage, you like talking to me and I enjoy having someone to spend time with you. So helping you out, being your friend it helps me out too. You've done same bad things in your life Gage, but so have I. No one can stand saying they haven't. And maybe I can see something deep in you, but there is no turning back now."
One of these days
Alice's voice brings Kyle reassurance that she was alive, but knowing she was caught, his adrenaline continues to surge through his veins.
Still on all fours, he makes it to the jeep, squinting to try to make everything out. "Hang on... I'm coming." Crawling to the windshield, he uses his already-bleeding elbow to break out the rest of the glass.
Reaching inside, he wipes his eye again before fumbling with Alice's seatbelt. He felt like the world was upside down and spinning, but knew he had to be upright since gravity was pulling him in that direction.
Finally he hears a click. "I got it... careful..." He tries his best to guide Alice out through the windshield. Once he knows she's clear, he collapses by the upturned hood of the jeep. Sitting with his head leaning back, he gives a little moan. "I feel..." He squints at Alice. "...numb." It was as if his brain was slowing down little by little, and each thought felt a little more lethargic than the last. "...and cold."
It was just as well that he couldn't see the blood on his clothes. "The others... we have to find... Blake. Are you... are you... okay?"
Gage plays with a packet of sweetener, not looking up when Sapphire joins him. Still waiting for someone to come take their order though, he finally breaks the silence.
"How come you keep saying I'm your friend? I don't understand."
Looking up, he gazes into her eyes. His look held so many things. Someone just meeting him now would think him to be very passive and shy. And maybe that was partly true now. But there was blood on his hands. He knew how to torture people. He knew how to hunt people and fight and kill. There was a look in his eye that spoke of a man with a much heavier past that simply being sheltered. He might not know much about living in society yet, but he had baggage unlike a normal person.
"With everything that happened... I don't understand why you want to be with someone like me. I mean I know you've told me you care and all that, and want to help but... friendship... that's... that's more than wanting to help me."
Jeff gives Katie a hug, still sitting, and giving her the best smile he can. Receiving her question, he shakes his head, then motions for her to sit next to him. "No... no, I came home so I could be where I love."
Taking a deep breath, he looks at his niece with seriousness, though still tries to be light about the whole thing. "I, um... just wanted to be with family again. Rick sent along some medication for me to help keep the symptoms at bay but..."
He swallows hard and reaches over to take Katie's hand. "It, um... we think it's something from the Agency and... it's aggressive. And... I'm getting worse. But there is no cure."
Another faint smile surfaces. "One of these days, I'm finally going to be better for good. That's... why I wanted to come home. So I'd get a chance to see everybody again."
