Shot

Giving a nod of thanks to his brother Wes new here his family would be taken care of. Even if he was worried still it would be eased just a little bit.

Letting out a sigh and turning from his brother Wes continues to the house to see Rosetta and BJ. He'd stay there a little while before going back to Cindy and talking with her.

Ryan can't help the slight color that came to her face at Eli's comment. No matter how many times someone would give her a comment she would probley never get use to it.

Once the subject it off Leo Ryan feels a little better. Its was still talking about Leo and thinking of him maybe interested in another person but Ryan had to move past it, it was just going to take a little bit.

"Yeah, he's another guy that raced with me went by the name of Roth. He's one of those big guys that thinks they can boss everyone around. I dont know if they ever got him or not the police or not. More than likly I would say no. When we are out there racing we really take everything into our own hands or thats what the law enforcement thinks anyways."

Giving a little shrug Ryan continues to play the card game not looking at her brother. It was hard to talk about still what had happened at the race and almost ended her life. Not to mention thinking Roth was still out there kind of scaired her, but she didnt want anyone to know that.

Looking up from her desk and seeing Axel Misty was a bit suprised but a smile forms on her face anyways. Carson had mentioned to her once about Axel's hand but never really went into much detail. Having a new challange in helping someone was always nice to keep her mind going.

"Why Hello Axel, its good to see you again. Please come in and take a seat."

Continuing to smile Misty new it must have felt alittle stangs for Axel to be here and asking for help but she was happy he had.

"I have been doing some research I guess you could say its my specialty. Digging deeper into things and make something possable form the imposable."

Leaning back in her chair for a moment studys Axel for a long moment before leaning forward on her desk again.

"Well if you really want my help its going to take a while, and this is all just experimental I guess you could say seeing as its never been proven to work. I promise I wont make you deformed looking or anything eather."

Misty cant see the skeptacle look in Axel's eye and dosnt blame him. If she was in his shoes she would be the same way. Just being a tets subjest could be hard for anyone not really knowing the out come.

"How about this..if you have time now let me take a look at your hand and have you tell me what happened. I can explain what my research has come up with so far in helping you and than if you want to give it a try we can. If not you can walk away no harm done. What do you say?"

Research

Sparky nods, quiet for a moment. He couldn't imagine what Wes must feel. He knew his brother loved his country, but now that he had a family... it was much different.

"I'm sorry. We'll be here for you... whatever you need." He gives Wes' arm a pat. "You can go check on Rosetta... when you tell Cindy, make sure she knows whatever she needs... it's here."

Eli smirks a little. "Yeah, well, he won't find one as cute as you. I think he wound up with the short end of the stick on this one." He tosses Ryan a wink. "Brother's privilege to brag about his sister."

Pausing, he concentrates on the game for a few minutes. "So... we never really talked about this guy who got you into this hospital in the first place. He's another racer, right?"

Axel wanders down the hallway, feeling a little lost. He'd been in here a time or two, but hadn't been paying very good attention. A woman ends up pointing him in the right direction and he finally finds his way to the infirmary. Looking in, he sees Misty at her desk. He recognized her - they had met a few times and they saw each other at church, but they hadn't interacted very much. He was friends with Carson, but Misty seemed just an acquaintance.

He clears his throat and knocks, wandering in a few steps. "Misty?" He offers a small smile. "Um... sorry to bother you, um... I... talked to Carson a while ago. My girlfriend wanted me to come, um..."

Axel feels a little retarded, not sure how to ask what he wants. He gestures to his lame hand. "I've got some major nerve damage and I've lost the use of my hand. Carson said that you'd been doing some research and... well, I don't know... I guess maybe I'm just looking for some help and I got desperate."

Regret

Giving a small nod Ryan laugh a little dry and sadden laugh. They did always do things the hardway that lead to some heartache in the path.

Continuing the card game Ryan would rather get off the topic of Leo but seeing her brother was continuing she just plays her card staying silent for a moment.

"Yeah he is a good guy with a good heart."

Looking up at Eli as he mentions Leo continuing to be down stairs Ryan cant but raise one of her eyebrows. That was strange Leo was still hanging around but for what reason?

"Last time I new he didnt. I guess that could of changed though but...thats odd. Maybe he found a cute nurse or something."

Taking the letter back and putting it back in his pocket Wes lets out a long sigh. He new it was his responsablilty to go but oh so bad he didnt want to and leave his wife and child alone. Kaylee was just learning new things and growing so fast, and just being away from Cindy at the shop was a killer to Wes. Thinking about missing those times even more cut his heart.

"I leave the second week of next month. I really never thought I would ever have a regret about being in the military but...when I got this letter I did. This is going to kill Cindy, and I hating to tell her even though I know I have to."

Looking up at his brother again Wes eyes had a glossy glaze to them though he wouldnt allow any tears to fall. He had to be strong, for his wife, for his daughter for his family, but his own war still raged.

"I'll be telling her tonight. I want to be able to spend as much time with the people I love as I can."

Hanging around

Gunner chuckles. "Yeah, well... I have a feeling. Bree and I are gonna be able to do without a mental hospital. There's something about the stars that doesn't require any specific location to see them."

Eli purses his lips, feeling bad for his sister. "We always did learn things the hard way, didn't we?" He offers a wry grin as he plays a card. "I guess it catches up with us eventually, one way or the other. Leo seemed alright though. Didn't like me none, but I think he was just being protective. Does he volunteer here or something when he's not at the shop? I keep seeing him downstairs when I go to the cafeteria. Never talk to him, but he's usually hanging around the desk area."

Sparky's eyes widen as he reads Wes' letter. He looks back up at his brother, his own fear in his eyes. "Oh, Wes..." He knew they all loved their country, and Wes had made a commitment a long time ago, but now? Why now?

He hands the letter back to him. "You know you don't have to worry about your family here. Whether it's me or anybody else... Cindy and Kaylee couldn't be in a safer spot, you have my word."

He studies Wes' face, seeing the inner battle. "When are you gonna tell Cindy? Or better yet, when do you... have to leave?"

Paper Work

Hope things for a long moment considering her options. Just watching Gunner for a long moment Hope can see a change in his eye.

"I can't promise anything Gunner, but I will see what I can do. Maybe at least I can get you out a day or two sooner."

Giving a smile Hope would do what she could for Gunner. Just getting a day or two would be a challange but if it ment at least helping than she would do it. That was better than nothing.

"I'll have to addmit though Bree is gonna miss you on her long over night shifts I bet."

Shaking her head and giving a grin again Ryan just rolls her eyes. Since she could remember Eli never wanted to bother anyone with till questions or requests it just wasnt in his style.

"Well, now I know and no you cant sleep on the floor, but you can sleep on my couch."

Staring to deal the cards out Ryan deals a little slower as Leo's name is braught up. It still hurt when she thought about him, and as much as she wished it wasnt over, she had to let him go. Ryan had found the one person she could see herself being with and all over something stupid it was gone. She didnt even know if they would get back together or not. Leo hadnt been to see her in day and his name was hardly said around her.

Looking up at her brother it was hard to hide her emotions no matter how strong on the outside she was to her brother her heart was always open.

"I...Yeah I think we are. I made a mistake and I cant go back and fix it. I dont blame Leo for walking away because what I did was wrong. Now I have to pay the price for it."

Catching on to the first part of what his brother said made Wes stop and think. His brother might be leaving soon? It made his heart thumb in his chest just thinking about have yet another one of the men away from the ranch.

"As far as I can tell everyone loves having you here."

Taking the paper from his jacket Wes hold it in his hand for a long moment. He'd receved it a few days ago and no one new about it yet. Though he had put some calls in to see about getting it reversed they hadnt been able to help him.

Holding it out to sparky to read he lets out a long sigh as another emotion flashed in his eye. He had planed on getting both his brother together first to talk to them about it but Mick had taken off and if Sparking was going to leave tomorrow he wanted him to know.

"I was hoping you would stick around longer to be another mad to protect our familys. I'm getting called to go back overseas. Cindy doesn't know yet, and to be honest now that I have a family of my own I am scared to death. I just want to know that everyone here to protected too so that way its one less thing I have to worry about."

Leaving?

Gunner grins a little, hoping that she was right. "Um... Hope?" He scans the room, making sure the doctors are far enough away. "You don't... think you could pull any strings and... get me out of here any sooner, do you?"

Eli ducks and cringes at Ryan's slap to his head. "Well! I didn't want to bother you. You've got enough on your mind."

He's quite a moment as she shuffles the cards and talks of going home. "Yeah, you know I wanna stick around long enough to see you drive."

Growing quiet, he sits thinking as she deals out their next hand. "Ryan..." He'd been intentional about avoiding this subject until now, but he wanted to ask. "You and Leo... done for good?"

Sparky tries to muster up a small laugh and he shakes his head. "Naw, no loose teeth, surprisingly enough." He brings a hand to his sore lip. "Reconsidering my options though. Eric's headed for Houston tomorrow..." He shrugs. "Might be worth a change in scenery for me. Get out of everyone's hair around here."

He shakes his head, moving on quickly. "Well, I'm glad Mick asked you to check on Rosetta - at least he's thinking of them now that he's sober. I just hope he didn't go to ride of a cliff somewhere, the idiot." He shrugs. "But the minute I go after him is the minute I get another punch to the mouth for caring."

Ding Bat

Giving a wide smile Hope already new about what went on with Gunner, and Bree last night. Bree had come to her yesterday morning about Gunners items he had and if she could barrow them. It had taken her a little while to think about it, but coming down to the conclusion that Gunner reacted good to Bree it would be ok and it seemed like it had helped Gunner alot. She was poud of him and was happy Bree could get through.

"Your very welcome Gunner. You have come a long way in a short amount of time, I am so proud of you."

Giving a smile and shifting her eyes just a little bit to watch the people that move back and forth around the room keeping en eye on everyday Hope turns her eyes back to Gunner again.

"Oh I am sure you will have a few more of those outings. If I know Bree she always has something new up her sleeve."

Shaking her head and reaching over the table to give him a backhanded slap to the head Ryan looks back at her brother.

"You ding bat why didnt you say something sooner? I would of let you stay at my place instead of staying at a hotel than just like I would now. I was to doped up to realizes you were staying in a hotel to start with."

Shaking her head and grinning Ryan reachs out and takes the cards from her brother. It was nice having him around. Some of her other friends shopped by from time to time to check on her but Leo she hadnt seen in a while and in a way is made her sad. So having he brother there all the time was a nice detraction.

"The dr. said they hope tomorrow or the day after they are going to let me go. I cant wait!! Not being able to drive is killing me, sitting here all day is even worse."

Stopping at the sound of his brothers voice Wes squints in the rising sunlight. Seeing his puffy lip and the split he cant help but let out a grunt.

"Looks like you got hit by the same truck Mick did."

The confustion that was growing on Wes face must have shown brighter than a bulb as without even asking Sparky let him know what was going on. Letting out a long sigh Wes shakes his head giving a whisper.

"Ohh...Mick."

Inside Wes' heart broke, he wish he had know and maybe talked with Mick a little longer. Thought he probably couldn't have said much maybe he brother could of used a friend.

"Nah, all he said to me was to take his extra car keys and check on Rosetta and BJ for him. Didnt knock any teeth loose in there did he?"

Wes new now was not the time for humor but he had to put in some kind or it just would be him.

Disappointment

Gunner shrugs, offering Hope a sheepish grin. "Well... that, and I'd rather have a session with you than the shrink they got here."

He looks down a moment before leaning forward on his elbows and picking at his fingernails. "Um... actually... I don't know..." Glancing up, there was much emotion behind his eyes, though he was better at controlling it today. "I guess... well, Bree was here last night and... I guess I realized that there was still something worth living for."

His grin comes back, just a small crooked one. "I got to think about something else for a while and... I don't know..." He shrugs. "I figure if I could have a good time for a couple hours then... maybe a few more of those and I wouldn't want to jump off a bridge again."

Gunner takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly, and keeping his eyes on Hope's. "I know they'll still want me here a few days but... I wanted to tell you that more than the others here who don't know me from a hill of beans. I thought you deserved the thanks more than they did."

Mick turns to Wes as he leaves, wanting to say thank you, but the words seem stuck. Sighing, he takes his bridle to Remington and finishes saddling up.

Sparky is wandering towards the dining hall when he sees Wes heading for the house. His lip was still swollen from the night before and it had obviously been split, but he'd survived.

"Wes... wait up." He wants to catch him before Wes spoke to Rosetta. "Look, um..." Hearing hoofbeats, he looks up quickly to see Mick trotting Remington away from the barn, heading towards the back path. He lifts his eyebrows. "Well... at least he's out of bed."

He sighs in disgust. "That idiot went and got himself drunk last night." Though his tone was irritated, there was disappointment in his eyes. "I don't know what happened... sounds like Dylan went and got himself missing, Jill convinced the cops not to let Mick get involved and he went off the deep end. Came home late, drunker than a skunk, yelled at Rosetta and BJ, socked me... Dan and I got him to the bunkhouse before he passed out and that was the last I saw of him until now. Did he say anything to you?"

Eli tosses his hand of cards down with a disgusted, "Gah! Who shuffled these anyway?" It was himself. But he needed someone to blame for the lousy luck in cards.

He glances to Ryan across the little table, one eyebrow quirked. "Okay, so that's five to two. I don't think I'm going to catch up by the time they let you out of here." He smirks and collects the cards to shuffle them again.

"Speaking of which, you got a floor I can sleep on at your place? I wanna hang around for a few more days, but the hotel has eaten a hole in my wallet."

Confustion

Still confused by his brother comments and the look in his eye Wes didnt know if it was fear he felt for his brother, or for the family maybe even both. It had been a long time since he had seen Mick like this.

Every inch of him wanted to stop Mick and see what was going on to make sure he was ok but over the years Wes had learned something important about his younger brother. When Mick wanted some time to just clear his head it was best to just let him.

"Ok, yeah I will do that. Just careful ok? And later I need to talk with you, when you have more time that is."

Giving the horse a gentile pat on the neck Wes turns to exits the small room still so confused about everything that was going on but maybe when he went to see Rosetta she would explain some things to him.

"You know I am always her for you brother if you need to talk!"

Leaving the barn Wes makes his way to the office first. Finding where they kept the spare keys He puts them in his pocket before making his way to the house to check on Rosetta and BJ.

Shaking his head and giving a small laugh at Jade's comment Dan gives her a little shove. Before putting his pitch fork down and streaching.

"Yeah, well I am better at teaching than learning myself. Its not always a bad thing to do it the hard way, just at the end of the day is when you really feel it."

Walking over to one of the horses and giving it a scratch behind the ears Dan thinks for a long moment before answering. He did have some free time later but was trying to hang out with Jade right now a good idea? He'd told Mick he only wanted friendship and that was true a ride couldn't hurt? It would give the horses some needed exercise before the winter season really sank in too.

"Yeah I think I have a little free time later we can go for a ride if you like."

Dan gave Jade a smile. It was nice to have a friend.

Following Gunner not to sure what this was about Hope is quiet hoping an explanation would come. Sitting down in a chair next to him Hope cocker her head a little at Gunner's comment.

"And what says I am not in the middle of something important when I was called?"

Giving a grin and a shake of her head Hope Gunner will know she really wasn't doing anything. There wasn't much work for her to do around the office on a consistent day something she wasn't use to.

"So your saying you called me here because you didnt want me getting bored and thats all?"

Keep busy

Mick looks up slowly from where he was untangling Remington's bridle. Meeting Wes' eyes, his own hold a dim look. Apparently news hadn't traveled too far yet. Mick couldn't remember everything... but he did know he'd been shouting outside... he remembered seeing Rosetta with BJ, who was crying, and he'd woken up in the bunkhouse, which meant he hadn't been allowed to spend the night in his own bed. That alone told him he'd done more damage than he cared to think about.

"Getting hit by a couple trucks woulda been better," he retorts dryly. "You wanna do me a favor, you go in the office, take the spare truck keys and put them somewhere I don't know about and don't tell me."

His tone was dead serious. "Then go check on Rosetta and BJ for me. I gotta go clear my head so I'll be back later."

He wraps up the reins and slings them over his shoulder before starting for the door. "After that, I got a lot of pieces to pick up."

Jade grins as Dan helps her with the pitchfork. "Back home at the riding stable, they were always getting after me for doing things the hard way... guess I just never learned." She scrunches up her nose and giggles. "At least I got you here to set me straight before I ruin my back."

She throws him a teasing look. "Will you have any time to go riding today?"

Gunner looks to the side quickly at Hope and a smile spreads on his face. "Well, Doctor Garrison, you made it!" He stands up, not giving her time to get settled, and leads her over to a little sitting area away from the others. Sinking down at the edge of an easy chair, he motions her to another chair or the couch.

He gives her a crooked grin. "I just wanted to make sure you still had enough work to keep you busy. Wouldn't want Reese thinking there wasn't enough for you to do."

11/4/09

Few Trucks

Smiling as he worked next to Jade Dan enjoyed having someone he could chat with while he worked. It helped pass the time and made the jobs go by quicker. Glancing over at Jade again Dan cant help but chuckle .

"Here hold the pitch for like this, it makes it easer on your back here..."

Dan runs a hand up and down Jade's lower back showering her where most of the strain would be holding the fork the way she was and the way she could do it now.

"...This just takes a little pressure off that area."

Giving a smile and shaking his head Dan went back to work till Mick entered the bran. Watching him say nothing and walk to the tack room he through a look of question at Jade before going back to work. For now he would leave Mick be, he probley feeling the after affects from last night.

Stepping into the barn Wes catchs sight of his brother. He had planed on coming to see him yesterday but Kayle was sick and he was trying to take care of her with Cindy, and now coming from the shop he had seen him stagger into the barn not knowing what had happend the night before.

Making his way through the barn he stops when he sees Jade not relizeing she was there. Giving a big grin he says his hellos and lets her know she needs to come up to the house to see her cousin. Than making it to the tack room slipping in to talk with his brother.

"Hey Bro, I had something I need to talk...to..you..."

Wes words trail off as his brother turns and he can see the look on his face. Not being able to help the consern for his younger brother Wes steps in more.

"Mick, it looked like you just got hit by a few trucks. Are you ok?"

Hearing Dr. Schreider's voice on the other end of the phone Hope was instantly alert wondering if something was wrong.

"Yes yes of course give me about a half hour and I will be there."

...Exacly a half hour later Hope pulled into the parking lot and was out of the car and heading inside. Once let in and letting the Dr know she was there Hope scaned the pashents that sat around a tv watching a show. Spotting Gunner Hope made her way over to him sitting down in a chair next to him. She was a bit worryed and hoped everything was ok.

"Hey Gunner, How is everything going?"

Hangover

Jade tries to compose herself as Dan joins her, managing a smile at the hot cocoa. "Thanks, Dan..."

Just sitting a while, she mulls over what he's said. "Yeah... yeah, I'll be okay. I'm just worried I misjudged Dad is all. It's been over a year since I came looking for him because I felt I didn't belong at home. Then I worked things out with Mom... now I feel like I'm right back in the place again. Except this time, maybe I don't really belong here either. I don't know."

She takes a sip of the hot drink, closing her eyes as it slips down her throat. "Mm... making hot chocolate is your job from now on."

Staring back at the fire, Jade tries to change the subject, just wanting to end on a good note tonight. At least that much is accomplished until they say goodnight. But as she slips quietly into the house a while later she had a hard time not dwelling on what had happened that evening.

The next day dawns clear. There was as crispness to the air, but not much more than a jacket was required to be comfortable outdoors. It's early yet - breakfast hasn't been put on yet. But the ranch is starting to move as the morning begins. Horses need to be let out, and chores need to be done.

Jade had decided to get up and keep her hands busy for a while, so she'd pitched in to help with barn chores alongside the other guys, sure to tell Dan good morning as well. She felt a little better this morning, and hoped this day would be easier than the last. Working next to Dan and seeing someone else enter the barn though, she wonders.

Mick slowly makes his way into the barn, speaking to no one and looking no one in the eye. Though having cleaned himself up a bit, he hadn't been to the house, which meant he hadn't shaved or changed his clothes from the day before. It was odd to see him without his hat, but that had been misplaced somewhere yesterday. His head hurt like nothing else, his eyes felt like they had needles sticking in them, and his bad knee wanted to buckle with every step. But he enters the barn anyway. Despite his downcast eyes, his shoulders were square.

He walks past the others working, not stopping to satisfy the questioning glances that are thrown his way. His route takes him straight to Remmington's stall. The tall bay is eager to get out and he willingly takes the halter, standing still as he's tied in the aisle.

Mick's eyes are bloodshot, underlined with dark circles - hardly the picture of anyone wanting to ride. But he goes to the tackroom anyway, emerging with his saddle and Remmington's bridle. Within minutes, he's cinching up the girth, his hands, though shaky, too experienced to fumble with the leather.

"...Yes, Dr. Garrison? This is Dr. Schreider from Northside Hospital." He sighs deeply into the phone as he looks across his office to the slouched figure in the chair. "I've got Brent Franklin here with me this morning, and he won't talk to me at all, but insists that if you come, he will talk to you. I'm at my wits end... would you come?"

Loss

Helping Sparky get Mick to the bunkhouse wasnt to hard as mosly Mick was out of it and couldn't put up a fight. Dan wasnt sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing considering Mick really didnt like him to much to start with.

"Yeah it does look like he got you good. The joy of having an older brother huh?"

Dan gives a small laugh before breaking off from Sparky and heading to the dinning hall once again. Glancing around the room Dan see Jade over in one of the chairs and lets out a small sigh. The night was over, and all fun forgotten once again.

Heading into the kitchen it only takes Dan a few minutes to whip up some hot coco with extra whipcream on top before he makes his way back over to Jade.

"I thought maybe you could use a drink to warm you up. I know I could."

Giving a little smile Dan sits down at another over size chair by Jade one he had sat at many times before when he couldnt fall asleep. Now was another time when sitting here seemed good.

"Your dad is gonna be ok. He'll just have one whopper of a headach in the morning and feel alot of regret probley."

Thinking for a long moment Dan takes a sip of his hot coco before speaking again a sad look passing in his eye for a moment.

"In the morning, dont be to hard on him. Not knowing if you son is alive or not is a hard thing ya know? Not saying his actions where good, just...has to be hard. Now are YOU going to be ok?"

I will, thanks J. I am gonna do a look around the ranch and make sure everything is ok than probley head to sleep myself. I'll talk to you in the am.

Going over to Jeff Katie gives him a kiss on the cheek and a squeeze. She had, had a nice time with him today and even cryed a little over hearing about her mother. She was going to miss him when she went back home but she would see him again and that braught her joy.

Right hook

Mick's eyes narrow at Rosetta's suggestion that he sleep in the bunkhouse. He takes a step towards her and BJ, but Sparky blocks him.

Sparky nods to Rosetta to keep on going before looking back to Mick. He wipes his lip again before pointing to the bunkhouse. "Come on. You're not going in here tonight."

"Th's is my house!" Mick barks. "You c'nttell me t' stay out. I told ya to leave an'wy."

Sparky has had enough, and he grabs Micks shoulder, giving him a quick shove. "Git!" he growls.

Mick stumbles, falling onto all fours on the gravel driveway.

Sparky sees Dan and gives a nod of thanks. "Help me get him to the bunkhouse will you?" With the young man's help, Sparky is able to get Mick back up and drag him most of the way to the bunkhouse. By the time they get there though, Mick is about ready to pass out, making the job easier.

Ten minutes later, Mick is on the bed, barely conscious. Sparky doesn't bother to takes his boots off or undress him. "He can lay just like that for all I care," he grumbles to Dan. "Let's leave him be. He'll be out cold for hours and I don't want to be around when he wakes up."

Getting back outside and heading towards the dining hall, he wipes his lip again, seeing that the bleeding wasn't slowing. "Dang it, Mick," he mutters under his breath. "He always did have a mean right hook."

Yipes... sounds like fun.

Jason sighs and rolls over onto his side.

I'm gonna try to sleep. Tell me about it tomorrow... be safe.

Jade sinks down in a chair by the fireplace. Not much of a fire was left, but she didn't care. She'd been staying at the house... but she was so embarrassed by her father, that she didn't even want to see Rosetta right now. She just wanted to find a corner to curl up and cry. But all there was here was an easy chair. It would have to do.

She pulls her knees up close and curls up in the chair, just letting the silent tears fall.

Jeff watches her for a moment and sighs. There wasn't anything he could do. This whole thing was confusing and it made him sad, thinking of how Rosetta must feel right now. He slowly picks up the playing cards. The game was obviously done for the night.

Kick In

Feeling Mike jerk is leg back only makes BJ cling tighter thinking he was playing around the smile on his face big and bright.

"Nooo...its not bed time yet we still have to play checkers you promised."

BJ looks up at Mick with his big toothy grin. But finally relizing that Mick was not playing around BJ was confused by his tone that he'd never heard Mick use before and it scared him. Finally letting go of his leg BJ takes a few steps back looking up at Mick as tears started to form in his eyes, his face showing how scaired, upset and confused he was to what was going on.

Hearing the words Mick spoke really did no damage to Rosetta. She was a adult and could handle it knowing it was the alcohol talking and not her husband, but the moment he snapped about BJ, and cursed infront of him Rosetta changed her stance, and felt sorry for Mick for a different reason now. Trying to keep her own temper at bay for BJ's sake.

Stepping off the pourch Rosetta scoops BJ up in her arms and gives him a big hug rubbing his back gentily as the small boy sobbed into her shoulder.

"Its ok Buddy, I'll go inside and play checkers with you ok? Maybe we can even eat some popcorn huh?"

Throwing a look at Mick Rosetta shakes her head the look on her own face showing she wasnt happy and was disapointed in Mick for his actions.

"Sparky this is your home to, you will be staying. Please take Mick to the empty bunkhouse for the night. I'd rather not have him around BJ when he is like this."

Not saying anything more was very hard as on the inside Rosetta's heart broke. She wanted to yell at Mick, and ask what was wrong with him and what was he thinking but if she did that or even trying to talk to him while he was still drunk they would get no where and it would only make things worse. For now, this was better.

Walking with BJ back in the house Rosetta whispers a thank you to Sparky as she pass. She would be awake for a while now having had all this happen as she sat and thought. Once inside Rosetta closed the door behind her not saying anything more as she put BJ down so he could set up the game, while she made some popcorn and hot coco.

Continuing to looks out the window Katie shakes her head and frowns hearing Jade's words. She new Mick had, had a drinking problem a while ago but he had been sober for so long now it was a shame he had runed that tonight.

Receving Jason's message Katie had completely forgot that she had sent her startling emotions his way.

Yeah, I am sorry. Its a long story, I dont even know all of it. I guess Dylan Mick's son has been missing and no one would tell him whats going on and now Sparky found him in town drunk. Its just...not very pretty right now. I guess the bodyguard in me kicked in.

Continuing to watch out the door and hearing Jade's words Dan turns his head to see her. The last person he though he would see drunk out of been Mick. Seeing the look in Jade's eyes Dan cant help the fist that clenches his chest. He had see that look before, that hurt so long ago, and memories start to flood Dan's mind for a long moment before he tryed to refocus again.

Reaching out to Jade, Dan puts one hand on each of her shoulders and cocks his head to look her in the eye. His own look convaying how sorry he was, for her father, and maybe something inside of him was pleading for his own forgiveness to a woman he'd never see again.

"You wait here with the other ok? I am going to see if Sparky need any help. Its going to be ok. I'll be right back."

Giving half a smile Dan turns from Jade again and heads out the door and across the lawn giving a small nod to Sparky.

Embarrassed

Mick is thrown off balance as BJ grabs his leg and he starts to stagger. Sparky steps close, only because BJ is there, and tries to steady him, but Mick gives him a hefty shove. "I told you to leave," Mick growls. He looks down at BJ, then up at Rosetta on the porch, his vision skewed. "What is he d'ng outta bed? It's late, you should allll be'n bed! Or didja wanna come see the fool come home, zthat it?"

He jerks his leg a little, trying to get BJ off. "Rosetta! Put 'em to bed," he barks. "'r d'ntcha know how?"

Sparky frowns, hardly able to believe Mick was doing this. He glances to Rosetta. "He was at the bar. I only happened to see his truck so I knew he was there. He'd been there for several hours."

"Shut up!" Mick hurls a curse at his brother before swinging his gaze back to his wife. "Get th's boy in bed b'for I do it mys'f."

Ryder, burn down the house?

Jason grins.

He's in enough trouble with Reese the way it is. Got caught on the news wrestling a cro-

He cringes and misses catching his tennis ball as it ricochets back to him.

What the... you alright? What's wrong?

Jade feels an odd churn in her stomach at Dan and Katie both get up to see what's going on. For some reason, she didn't want to. She looks to Jeff, who is clueless but without wanting to spend his energy on getting up and going to the window.

Finally she puts her cards down and gets up slowly, joining Dan at the open door. She folds her arms against the chilly night air and squints to see Sparky's truck and the others gathered around as Mick shouts. She feels like throwing up.

"He's drunk." Her voice is laced with disbelief, disappointment, anger and embarrassment. "I don't believe it." Tears well up in her eyes as she hears the swearing uttered in Sparky's direction and she backs away so she can't see the scene anymore, turning away from the others. That was her father out there... drunk... She wanted the ground to open up and swallow her right now.

Protection

Sitting in front of the fireplace Rosetta held her books she was reading the other on the sleeping child that was next to her his head in her lap. A checker bored tightly gripped in his arms as he wanted for the one who had not come home yet.

Running her hand absentmindedly through BJ's hair Rosetta would have put him to bed already but she felt lonly tonight and a bit on edge this had been the first time in a while she was in the house without Mick and it felt way to strange. Having BJ near was nice and she didnt mind. Though trying to read her book her mind kept wondering to Mick. She hadnt heard anything from Sparky yet so that was a good thing right?

"Hey now hey now...watch who your saying is cheating here. I saw you slip and extra card to Dan before and than try to say it was a mistake."

A grin formed on Katie's face looking across the table at her father and giving him a wink. Things had been going pretty good and though she missed Jason something terrible it was nice spending time at home and actually enjoying it this time knowing everything was ok.

Quiet you before they hang me at the steak for really cheating.

Katie sent her laughing emotions back to Jason but at the same time laughed out loud too. Relizing she had Katie looked around the table as the faces that staired back at her. Turning a little red Katie's mouth draws up in a big smile.

"Sorry..Outside interference tickled my funny bone."

Katie new they would all know that she was talking about Jason. In its own way it was kind of nice to be different from the others and feel special knoing she could talk to Jason whenever she wanted.

Holding the cards up to hide her smile Katie peeks over the top at her friends once again before replying to Jason.

Sorry J, just one more day without me there and than I will be home to spend as much time as I can with you. That is....if Ryder hasn't burned down the house.

Snapping her head up at the sound of a car and than the yelling Rosetta cant help the race of her heart that starts worryed for a long moment by the angry voices. It almost sounded like they were right in the room with her yet not even close.

Hearing the voice BJ snaps his head up a grin forming on his face as she still clings to his checker bored. In a few swift seconds before Rosetta could stop him BJ sprung off the couch and ran to the front door with such excitement that Mick was home. Looking out the door and seeing Mick the little boys excitment grew, partly from being so tired, and partly because he had been waiting all night to play checkers and wanted to play with no one but Mick.

Swinning the door open and pushing past Sparky BJ wraps himself and the checker bored around Mick's leg.

"DAD...I have been waiting for you all night and mom kept telling me you would be home soon. Come on...we have to get inside we are late playing out game..."

Getting up from the couch as fast as she could Rosetta tryed to stop BJ though he was to fast for her a fear ran through her no knowing why there ways so much yelling going on outside. Getting to the pourch and taking one look at Mick Rosetta's heart sank. The blood shot look in his eye she had seen before and for a moment her heart went out to him knowing he must be hurting over the whole Dylan thing.

"Sparky where was he when you found him?"

Shooting a look across the table at Jade Dan stands from the table putting his cards down. Not being able to help the small protective side of himself that kicked in he headed to the small door to look out.

Looking across the yeard he could make out the voice and in the dim lights that were around the ranch he could see Mick, Sparky, BJ, and Rosetta. Not sure what was going on still he opened the door to see if they needed help or not.

Giving a little jump Katie cant help the bit of fear emotions she sends Jason's way. Standing from her own seat the card game forgotten Katie instincs as a bodyguard kick in weather people need it or not.

Moving over to the window Katie looks to Dan and than out the window making out her aunt, and uncles along with BJ. What was going on?

Biggest mistake

Jade walks alongside Dan, finding herself forgetting about her worries for a little while. With nerves calmed and not so intent on trying to wear a mask, her outright flirting seemed to dissolve into more relaxed chitchat, as she shared about her mom, friends and finishing high school. She found it easy to talk to Dan... she'd been trying hard to find out how she should act around him, when in reality, just being herself was the easiest. And she liked it.

Come supper time, she almost didn't want the walk to end. Dan had helped settle her nerves and she almost wished they didn't have to go eat. But she knew they did, and so they joined the others for the evening meal.

The hours slip slowly by as afternoon becomes evening, and evening approaches nightfall. The ranch was slowly closing up for the evening. Supper was over, horses were put away, and little ones were tucked in for the night. It was quite as the sun sank below the horizon. A chill was in the air as darkness descended. Warmer days were still present, but the nights were cold.

"Ahh! Katie, you rat!" Jade throws down her cards with disgust, but the teasing twinkled in her eyes. Jeff and Katie were creaming her and Dan. She smirks at Dan from across the table. "I'm telling you, they're cheating."

"Cheating?" Jeff takes up the cards to shuffle them. "If we were cheating, we woulda had you five hands ago."

Jade sticks out her tongue, but finally laughs before taking a sip of her ice tea. She taps the table with her palm. "Alright, one more round. Dan, we got 'em this time." Tonight was fun. The only worry she had was knowing that Sparky wasn't back yet, and they'd heard nothing from him or her dad. But she tried to ignore that little knot in her stomach and just have a good time. It wasn't too hard with this small group.

Play the ace. You know you want to.

Jason grins as he tosses his tennis ball against his bedroom wall, catching it, and sending it flying again, over and over. Insomnia had caught up with him tonight, and snoring Trooper wasn't offering much help. Jason had shifted his thoughts to Katie, and somehow, had known they were playing cards. He wasn't sure how... he couldn't normally do that, but tonight it seemed easy.

Emotions are shaped into laughter and sent Katie's way.

I hope you're having fun while I'm sitting at home... alone... bored.

Lights from a pickup come into view and bob as the truck comes up the driveway. Parking near the main house, when the engine is cut, it isn't silence that comes, but the sound of the loud argument from inside the vehicle. It only gets louder as two men exit.

Sparky gets out of the truck and slams the door. "I don't care! You're being stupid!"

"I...I amnot!" Mick slides from his seat and stumbles, remaining standing only by grabbing the open door. "Jst shut up an' lemme be." He gives the door a shove to shut it, and staggers towards the house.

"I will not shut up! I'm your brother and I have a right to speak."

"Y'r on mmy ranch now," Mick counters, his speech slurred. "You wanna fight... go 'head, but I am not... not..." He teeters a little as he points at Sparky, forgetting what he was going to say. "I'm not lissn'ng to you."

Frustrated, Sparky throws up his arms. "You're an idiot! So you got a problem, and you fall to pieces. Nice, Mick. Real nice."

"It's my son!" Mick barks. Whiskey induced tears form in his glazed eyes. "I know it's Agency and you jst wan' me t' sit back an' watch? I've had it w'th th're stupid plots. I'm finding him, Sp'rky... I'm finding him. Now get outta my way."

Sparky folds his arms across his chest, standing in Mick's way. "You calm down before going inside."

"I am calm!"

"You are not."

"Get outta my way," Mick warns. "I've been p'shed 'round by my ex, p'shed 'round by the pol'ce and I'll be hanged if I get p'shed 'round by my own broth'r."

Sparky glares back at him. He'd figured out most of the story. Dylan was missing and the police would not allow Mick to be involved in the case, even though it was his son. Mick believed it was Agency after one officer had slipped and mentioned Medridge. "You're not thinking straight. Let's go sober you up and talk some sense before you go an-"

A brutal fist to the mouth cuts Sparky off, sending him stumbling to the side. Grabbing the porch railing for support, he puts a hand to his bleeding lip. There was a deeper pain there than just his lip though. He stares at Mick. "You don't deserve to be on the case," he hisses. "They don't need a drunk messing things up."

Somewhere Mick knows what mistake he just made, but his mind is too cloudy to overcome it. He just glares at his brother. "G't out of here."

"This is my home too."

"N't anymore. G't out!"

"I will not! You don't know what you're saying!"

Mick points down the driveway, his anger high. "Out!"

Jade's head shoots up as she hears the shouting outside, and a cold chill runs down her spine. Her face turns a shade of red as she recognizes her father's voice, then she pales. She'd never heard tones like this before and it scared her. She looks across at Dan, her eyes wide. It was her turn to play, but her mind was suddenly captured by the unseen argument going on outside.

small talk

Giving a nod to Sparky Rosetta was greatful she said he'd go look for Mick. She would of done it herself but she had BJ to care for and didnt want to leave him high and dry tonight eather.

"Thanks Sparky. If you need anything call."

Turning and heading back inside Rosetta disapears behind to door to see if maybe BJ would like to watch a movie with her.

Walking with Jade Dan just lets the silence linger for a long while just listing to that witch was around them. It was nice to just listen to the noises of fall and be there if Jade needed to talk. Finally as Jade speaks Dan gives a smile.

"It was no trouble I just wanted to let you know I wasnt upset with you. Takes alot to get me really upset."

Continuing to talk along with Jade Dan is quiet for a little while longer before speaking again.

"So Jade, whats it like where your mom lives? Nice?"

Continuing walking Dan kept up the small talk with Jade just trying to get to know her better and see who Jade really was. Forgetting about all time, Dan didnt know what late it was but continuing to walk felt nice.

Sweet of you

Sparky studies Rosetta's eyes for a moment, seeing her worry... maybe even some disappointment. "Yeah." He didn't hesitate. "I'll go see if I can find him. I know he was at the station so I'll go there first and see if I can get some answers."

He reaches out and pats her shoulder. "Don't worry, okay? I'll be back."

Jade stops in her tracks and whirls around, her cheeks reddening just a little. She puts her hands in her pockets and looks down, a little embarrassed. "Um..." She stops in front of him and looks up to meet his eyes. "Yes... yes, I'd like that, thank you."

Heading down a little path with him, she's quiet for a few minutes before talking while she walks. "I don't think I ever thanked you for the flowers. That was very sweet of you."

Home

Looking up from her desk Rosetta held her own worry eye glancing to BJ who was playing over in the courner finally done asking her when dad was going to be home. Tonight was there family game night and it was unusual for Mick to have miss it. She had talking to him earlyer in the day but they hadn't talked because Mick was at the sheriff office but now she had tryed calling him and it went right to voice mail about three times. That was about an hour ago, and she didnt want to bother him to much. Giving it twenty more minutes she would wait before trying again.

"No I havnt talked to him since about eleven. We didnt even really talk that long. He was pretty busy at the police station I think but I didnt get much info from him. Thats the last I heard."

Giving a small shake of her head again she sets her pen down taking a quick moment from her book keeping. Standing from her desk she walks over to BJ and ruffles his hair.

"Mom is going to be right outside Little Man if you need me ok?"

Looking up from his toy truck, and action figures BJ gets a big smile on his face as he stands trying to look around Rosetta.

"Is Dad home now?"

Looking down at her son Rosetta gives a little smile though it made her head break to give him her answer.

"No not yet, He will be soon though ok? I just need to go out and talk with Uncle Sparky ok?"

Hanging his head a little BJ sits down a little picking up his truck again and picking at the paper on it.

"Ok."

Giving another smile and heading to the door Rosetta motions Sparky outside she didnt have to have to diguess this infront of BJ. He was so smart for him own good sometimes and his little ears didnt need to hear and be worryed.

"I dont know where he is Sparky and frankly I am worryed. Who knows whats going on. For all I know he could be going after the Agency right now to get Dylan back. I know its his son and all but..."

Rosetta looks twords the house and through the door at BJ. It had been a long time since she had felt like this and is really sucked.

"...He's got another family now to he needs to think about."

Looking back to Sparky Rosetta gives a small smile trying her best to keep her chin up and positive.

"Would you mind to much going to look for him for me please?"

"Your gonna make a mote for us if you keep walking about the barn like that!!"

Dan stood with his arms acrossed not to far away from Jade. He hadnt been there long but there was just something about Jade that her moment always seemed to catch his eye.

"I thought maybe you would like to go for a walk or something to take your mind off everything before dinner."

Trying his best of offer Jade a smile he new she was upset, worried and just totally confused right now. He just wanted to be there if she needed a friend.

Strange

Jade blinks back another tear as she looks up at Dan. She knew in her head that all this wasn't her fault, but her heart still hurt.

She sniffs again as Dan starts to leave, and really isn't sure how to respond. He was being so kind. Even after yesterday. Remaining on the hay bale for the longest time, she just watches Dan work along with the other ranch hands until she finally wanders away...

"Hey, Rosetta?" Sparky taps on the office door, poking his head inside to find his sister-in-law. He offers a small smile. The day had gone by quickly, and supper would be soon. "Um... I noticed Mick still isn't back. I had a question about the horses out front, but he didn't answer his cell. Jade said she told you Dylan was missing? Have you... heard from Mick at all?" It was strange... Mick had left that morning and nothing else had been heard. It wasn't like him to at least not have called.

Outside, Jade paces around the barn. She had skipped breakfast and skipped lunch, and her stomach pains reminded her of that, but she didn't want any supper either. Where was her dad? What was happening? She'd talked to her mom again and she'd been raked over the coals for telling Mick about everything. Now he wasn't even home. She chewed on a broken fingernail, continuing the worn path around the barn... and around again.

Light

Continuing to try and comfort Jade Dan rubs her back just trying to keep her calm. He new how she must feel.

"Hey Hey...you belong her more than I do. Heck, there was only one place I fit in and I got as far away from there as I could. We just have to keep moving on you know? I think you fit just fine here, but I think your trying to hard."

Falling silent once again Dan lets out a small sigh. There were days when he hated not fitting in, and feeling out of place but for him he had no family around, and no friends. But Jade had those, she just need to be her and not try so hard. Leaning his head on top of her for a moment the smell of her hair filled Dan's noise. The sweet sent bringing a warmth to his cheeks.

Hearing Mick's voice call for Jade Dan sits up and removes his arm from around Jade and looks up knowing his boss was not happy to see him like this with his daughter. He was only trying to help was that really wrong?

Once Mick is done Dan turns to Jade again giving a little shake of his head and putting a finger under her chin to make her looks up at him.

"You didnt, but its ok that he is. Your mom should have never put you in the middle like that and Mick has ever right to be mad. He's probley more worryed than anything else."

Letting out a sigh and standing again Dan new there really wasnt else he could do right now for Jade. Before leaving though Dan turns to Jade once again leaning aganst the piller giving her a small smile.

"Dont let your light burn out Jade, You've got to much going for you. You smile can light the darkest of places and thats something you should never lose."

Pushing off of the piller Dan turns giving a small shake of his head before retreaving his hat and pitchfork again to continue his work.

Mess

Gunner grins as he follows Bree once more. "If anybody asks, you only let me out for one prowl so I could get some blood."

With his papers and book tucked under his arm, he quietly finds his way back down the stairs with Bree, and back to his room. For once... it didn't feel like such a dungeon.

Jade feels someone sit down next to her and she turns her head a little, surprised to see Dan. She would have told him he didn't need to worry about her, but too quickly, he's got her arm around her.

Hiding her face, she accepts the comfort and leans into him, crying onto his chest. "I'm sorry," she whimpers. "For... for yesterday... and today... I... I just..." She sniffs, the tears still coming in steady streams. "...I don't belong anywhere... and nothing is going right... and..."

A hiccup interrupts her and she tries to regain control, but it's not much use. "I didn't mean to cause trouble... I really didn't." Her words are muffled against Dan as he leans on him. He was warm and his scent mixed with the smell of the barn was somehow soothing. "It's just a big mess," she whimpers and sniffs again. "Just one big mess."

Outside, one could hear Mick's voice all the way from inside the office. He was on the phone and was none too happy with Jill. A heated argument had started as soon as she'd answered her end, and it went on for several minutes. Mick's temper had reached maximum, finding out that his son had been missing and Jill had purposely kept it from him. He knew that it wasn't just her, but her husband and her mother too, all who didn't take very kindly to him. They thought he would interfere... that was an understatement.

"Thank you, I will!" Mick's voice was raised again. "If I find out anything has been screwed around with on this case, somebody will pay. I'm going to that station and if I don't get the answers I want, I will be on this case whether you like it or not. Got it?"

He slams down the receiver, snatches up his hat and stomps back outside, letting the door fall shut hard behind him. He hadn't even taken the time to explain things to Rosetta. He was too worked up. He was worried, scared, and angry.

"Jade!" He aims for the barn again. "Jade! Are you-" He stops mid-sentence as he steps into the barn and sees her with Dan. His eyes narrow in disapproval.

Jade hears her father's voice and snaps her head up, trying to compose herself, but it does little good. "What?"

"I'm going to the police station. If your mother calls, tell her not to bother trying to keep me out of this one." Spinning on his heel, he's gone once again.

Jade bites her lip as another tear cascades down her cheek. Falling back against Dan again, she just wants to find a shelter. "I didn't mean to make him mad," she whispers.

Vamp

Talking a look around the roof and seeing Gunner got most of the books and papers that could be blown away Bree grabs the blue tarp and puts it over the telescope to protect it leaving it for another time.

Turning to Gunner and giving a small chuckle with a small shake of her head the humor showing in her eyes.

"Alright than come on Vamp lets get going. Just watch out for those werewolves they should be doing there rounds about this time."

Over heading the loud voice as he worked Dan didn't want to ease drop but it was loud and people sounded upset he couldn't help it. Cleaning out the stall and listing he can make out Jade and Mick's voice catching a little bit here and there of what was said.

Finally hearing things quiet down and than soft sobs that followed. Feeling his heart break Dan puts his pitch fork down and taking his hat off to set it on the rail Dan cross the barn floor slowly. He hated seeing anyone heart and he did consider Jade a friend he just wanted to help.

Sinking down on the bail next to her Dan quielty wraps his arm around her shoulder pulling her twords him just a little so she could lean on him.

No words needed to be said the only thing Dan had was comfort for Jade as he gentily rubbed her back. It wasnt much but it was all he had to offer.

Maybe... just maybe

Gunner cocks his head as he looks down into Bree's eyes once more. Even though he hated being here, she made it tolerable, and her words meant a lot. "You're a good friend, Bree." He places a hand on her face, cradling her cheek. "I don't care if it's more or less than that definition... you mean a lot to me." He shrugs. "So whatever we have..." He still didn't know. They still hadn't said if they really wanted more or not, or if they agreed they already had it. But he really didn't care. "...Yeah, it's worth getting out of a place like this."

It was true. He had many "friends." But not like this. Not with whom he shared his life and who had seen him at his worst. And maybe... just maybe... this was a reason worth living for.

Grabbing the rest of the loose bits and pieces, Gunner aims for the door again that would lead back inside. Stopping for a moment, he took a deep breath. "Alright, lead the way. This vampire's got your back."

"...but Mom... I... please, Dad might be able to help and.... Well no.... Didn't the police have any more leads? I mean, he can't have just up and vanished. ....Yeah, but... well, no.... who was he with? Didn't they see anything? I don't understand." Jade leans on her knees and runs her hand through her disheveled hair. Sitting in the loft, she'd hoped she was out of earshot of anyone else when her mother had called. It was after time for morning chores and she'd high-tailed it out here, sneaking up to the loft without seeing anyone at all, skipping breakfast too. Now the news wasn't what she wanted to hear.

"Agency?" Her voice quivers. "But, Mom... can't Dad.... I... yes... okay..." Her shoulders drop. "Yeah... sure.... yeah, talk to you soon."

Flipping her phone shut, Jade sniffs and wipes her eyes. "God, where is he?" she prays aloud. "I know I didn't get along with him, but... but he's my brother."

"Now you want to tell me what's going on?"

Jade jumps, feeling sick to see her father halfway through the loft door as he stood on the ladder. "How... how long have you been there?"

Mick looks at her grimly. "Long enough to know something's wrong with Dylan. Now look... I know you're mad at me for yesterday and you've been hiding out from me all morning... but please, Jade..." His voice is calmer than yesterday. "Tell me what's going on."

Jade's lip quivers, but she finally nods and stands. Following her dad back down to the ground floor, she paces a little, wiping her eyes again. "Dylan... he's... he's missing."

"What?"

"Missing. He... was out with friends and didn't come home."

Mick's insides churned. "And?"

"And the police are looking for him. End of story."

Mick was beginning to grow agitated again. "How long has he been missing?"

"A... couple days?"

"And why didn't you tell me about this?"

A tear rolls down Jade's cheek. Her eyes catch sight of Dan, and she looks away quickly, embarrassed for him to see her upset again after yesterday. He probably thought she was still mad at him since she hadn't yet thanked him for the flowers. "Mom... Mom told me not to."

Mick's eyes widen as he sets his hands on his hips in anger. "She what?!"

"She said she didn't want you to get worked up or... or interfere."

"Aw, great." Mick shakes his head in disgust. "Is she home?"

"Um... I..."

"I she home?!" Mick raises his voice.

"Yes!"

Mick spins on his heel to storm from the barn, heading to the house. His ex would be getting a call.

Jade stands trembling, now not sure what will happen. She'd disobeyed her mom, Dylan was still missing, and her dad was on the warpath. Sinking down on a hay bale, she starts to cry again, burying her face in her hands. She never should have come.

I'll Be

Letting out a sigh as the wind gusy came along and broke the moment Bree trys to calm her beating heart down. Standing Bree grabs some of the flying papers herself before they go off the roof. Tucking them in one of the books Bree can tell the shift change in Gunner's voice and once again the ping hits her heart knowing he had to go back down.

"Yeah, I'm sorry you do."

Coming over to Gunner Bree stands next to him for a long moment not saying anything else just looking up at the stars. Finally after one might think Bree wasnt going to say anything else she speaks again placing her hand on his arm gently

"There is only one difference going in this time though. You have an ever better reason to get better and leave this place."

Bree looks up at him the moonlight dancing shadows across her face as her eyes glimmer like diamonds in the light.

"...Me! I'll be waiting for you!"

Wind

"You may not be sane," Gunner agrees. "But you're far from insane."

He lets his smile spread a little more, just enjoying this time. It was different. It was nice. Normally, the quiet moments were spent by himself. He'd never figured he wanted company much to clutter his space. But now that he was experiencing these moments with someone else... it wasn't half bad.

His face close to Bree's, he shifts on his arm, coming even a little closer. "Thanks for treating me like a human being, Bree, I..."

A gust of wind whips across the roof of the building, flipping through the book pages and scattering loose papers.

Gunner sits up quickly to grab a flying paper. "Aw, crap, it was just too good wasn't it?" He sighs and crawls to shut one of the books, then rocks on his heels to stand up back at the telescope again. He knew their time needed to come to an end anyway. Neither had their questions answered but... he didn't really mind if she didn't. "I have to go back down soon?" His voice had shifted again to a quieter tone... one that told he didn't want to be locked up again.

Scared

Continuing to look back at Gunner, Bree's own lips turned up into a little grin as she studied Gunner's eyes. The cool breeze going unnoticed for now.

"Sometimes walking through the fire together is better than walking alone, no matter how short or long it might be."

Things seemed differnt with Gunner, not a bad different but a good one. A feeling she liked, and brought her comfort even if it was new and strange. Things in her life hadn't exactly been normal.

"I'm not scared as long as your not. I am not exactly sane myself you know!"

Bree's lips turn up into more of a grin at her own humorous comment that most wouldnt find funny, but she saw the silly side to it. Her dry humor that Gunner seemed to share, and smile at. Gently Bree's own hair moved in the soft wind, the cold trying to spoil the momnet, but neither body letting it.

Want?

If she had to choose... Gunner bites his lip again. Shifting, he lets go of her hand so he can turn on to his side and look her in the face. He was a little closer than intended. But even though were so totally awkward right now, for some reason, he really didn't feel embarrassed. Maybe it was because he knew the awkwardness was being shared and it wasn't just him.

Studying Bree's eyes would have been hard, had it not been for the moonlight. "I don't know." The corner of his mouth quirks. "You've been more than a friend to me... but... that's different."

A cool breeze begins to blow, bringing a chill to the air. But Gunner didn't mind. Anything to keep him from being locked in his room. His hair blows a little, but he doesn't bother to straighten it, still studying Bree. "Do you... want to be? I'm crazy, ya know."

Kiss

Letting out a contentful sigh Bree looks to the sky again just in time to see the shooting star. It made her smile, to her it ment good luck. Thought it was only superstition it was still nice to pretend.

"Wish on garbage, but dont wish for garbage."

Bree can't help the tiny laugh the surfaced after her silly comment that slipped out. Sometimes she said silly things, and her actions were confusing but it was nice to know that, that didnt bother Gunner.

Hearing Gunners question Bree turns on her side her head proped on her arm. The smile from her face had faded but in her eyes on could tell she would thinking and not upset.

Bree had never had a boyfriend before or even a person she would of considered going after so what was it like or how did it feel? Bree wasnt sure, but if she had to come to her own conclusion she would want it to feel just like this. The strange tummy flops, and the tingles she felt just seemed right. There was only one thing missing though that the movies always had.

"Well everything feels like we might be more than friends, but we haven't kissed yet, so I...dont really know. I've never had a friend before let alone a boyfriend....If I had to choose, I would deffintly say it was you but...I...mean...."

Bree felt stupid stumping over her words but she really didnt know how to describe this. Its was something completely new to her.

"Do...you think we are?"

Are we...

"Mmm." Gunner chuckles. "We'll have to slip up to Alaska where we can really see those northern lights." He grins as he glances back up to the sky. "Oh, oh oh!" He sounds like a little kid as he points. "Did you see that shooting star?"

He pauses, looking for more. "It was probably just space garbage burning up as it entered the atmosphere... Can you imagine all those people making wishes on garbage?"

Laughing, he replays Bree's words. He hadn't responded, but they had been nice. He was glad they'd met too. Without her... this would be a much more miserable place. He didn't know why she had wanted to help him, but... who could explain things like that anyway?

"Hey, Bree?" His fingers tighten on hers a little as a strange sensation tingles his spine. He felt stupid asking, but after the last couple days, there just seemed to be more than he was used to with anybody else. "Are we... more than friends?"

Pass up

Turning her head again to look at Gunner a smile bigger than any shown before spreads across Bree's face. She could feel a little color come to her cheeks but she didnt let it bother her to much. It was nice outside, it was nice being here, and she felt good. What could make her feel worse at a time like this?

"I think I would like to look at the starts more. Its a whole new world out there, and I liked to see it."

Turning to looks at Gunner Bree smiles once again. The hours had seemed to slip by but she didnt mind. It had been nice here, peaceful, calming. Gunner was going to be ok she could feel it.

"Maybe we could go see the northern lights sometime too?! I saw them in your book and they looked so nice. Like someone could get lost in them."

Freedom, nothing to worry about, no past to follow you are, and no future to worry about the sky was the limit and Bree now could understand why Gunner loved it so.

"I'm happy I met you that day having a none ice cream float. This is to perfect to have passed up."

If you want to

Gunner is surprised as Bree takes his hand, and he's really not sure what to do for a moment. Receiving her thank you, he's a little confused. He hadn't thought he'd done anything that great, let alone say the right words. He'd thought it was horribly corny.

Turning his head again, he catches sight of Bree's tear, and he bites his lip. Reaching over with his free hand, he brushes it away with a finger. "I'm the one that should be saying thank you," he comments quietly. "If it weren't for you... I'd just be a doped up ward with no friends. But you..."

He points back up at the stars again. "You carry that light with you... and you share it. I don't understand it... and I can't see it... but I can feel it."

He returns the squeeze to her hand. "Maybe when I get out of here... we'll have to do this more often... look at the stars." His neck turns as his eyes roam her soft face. "If you want to."

Tear

Continuing to look at Gunner even after he looked away Bree could feel a lump in her throat form as a wetness formed in her eyes moonlight hitting causing it to dance as the tear ran down her cheek. No one had ever said something like that before to her and it caused something to form inside of her, even as her cheeks turned a shade of red.

Reaching out Bree takes Gunner's in her own as she leans back on the blanket again looking up at the sky. Giving it a gentil squeeze.

"That was the most beautiful thing anyone has ever said to me Gunner."

Silent for a moment again another tear rolled down Bree's cheek though she didnt feel sad, it was a feeling of joy that Bree had hardly felt before, and the feeling that she belonged. She had a friend to shair a life with, and for that if nothing else was granted to her would be enough. In Gunner's eyes she wasnt strange, messed up, or weird.

"Thank you."

For eternity

Gunner shrugs and shifts his head to see Bree better. "Just 'cause..." He laughs. "I don't know. It seemed the thing to do." For some reason, he felt a little heat come to his face, so he turns to look up at the stars again.

"As the stars shine bright, so does the beauty... the beauty of the soul. Why keep it hidden behind the veil of night? Deserving of a name... a place... for eternity."

A quiet moment follows before Gunner starts to laugh again and he covers his face with his hands, speaking so his words are muffled. "Oh, that was corny."
