Laura swallows hard, not finding Nate’s touch surprising or something to pull away from. He was comfortable, and no one to be afraid of. Nonetheless, her eyes still linger towards the ground.
His words hit her as so kind…they made her want to defeat this rut she was in, even if she didn’t know how.
Hearing Nate walk away, Laura finally looks up. As he gets farther away, she rolls her eyes at herself, and rubs the heel of her hand over her face, trying to rid herself of the smeared mascara. “I can’t go back in there like this!” she wails. “I’m a mess.”
She sniffs and blinks her eyes, turning to see her messy reflection in her car window. She heaves a sigh, followed by a dry laugh. “Yeah, I’m a mess alright.” Shaking her head, she tries to compose herself. “Okay, Nate…you win… give me a lift. I won’t take more than five minutes, but promise me you won’t tell anybody about this. I feel enough like a fool the way it is.”
Carson blocks out the pain as Misty works on him and puts the fresh bandage on. As she looks him in the eye, he wonders again what is going through her mind. She moved around him like it was easy…like she didn’t care that he was an enemy. It was so strange… what gave a person that kind of mentality?
Hearing about painkillers, he shakes his head. “Just leave it be, it’s not that bad. I…” His voice drifts off as the door opens and he sees Jamie. His eyes widen, both from surprise, and from knowledge that he’s probably the last person she would ever want to see again. She looked different…in the light…clean without blood on her face, or dimness in her eyes. As she backs away, he knows that seeing him was a shock to her. He opens his mouth, but realizes that there was absolutely nothing he could say. What was this new sensation he was feeling? Was it guilt? Sorrow? He didn’t recognize it, but it didn’t feel very good.
Rick’s eyebrows shoot up as he sees Jamie, realizing what’s happening. As she backs away, he calls to her. “Jamie!” But she’s already gone. He swivels a cold gaze in Carson’s direction.
For the first time Carson can remember, he doesn’t accept the visual challenge, but instead, drops his gaze. What was wrong with him?
Rick grits his teeth and pulls off his gloves. “I’ll be back. Misty, stay with Carson, and if he tries anything at all, scream bloody murder.”
Con looks up quickly as his door opens, and concern hits him immediately, seeing the look on Jamie’s face. As she slides to the floor, he’s on his feet in an instant. “Jamie, what’s wrong? Who are you talking about?”
He kneels down next to her, drawing her into his arms, her tears striking his heart all over again. He had no idea what had scared her so much. “It’s okay…shhh.”
A knock at his door startles him, and he pulls Jamie up off the floor, holding her against his chest, wrapping her in his arms. “Yeah?”
Rick sidles into the office, not surprised at seeing how upset Jamie is, but wanting to make sure she’s okay. He looks at Con. “Just wanted to see if she was alright.”
“What’s going on?” Con hisses. “What happened?”
“She saw Carson.”
“Who?”
“You know.” Rick gestured down the hall. “The guy Jason shot out at that house. Didn’t kill him, begged to be a snitch for the Agency in exchange for his life I guess, and they brought him here. They didn’t tell you?”
Con can feel his blood run cold, and he stops rocking Jamie. “No…no one told me.”
“Oh.” Rick puts his hands on his hips. “Well…that’s what it is. I’ve had him in the clinic getting cleaned up. I guess Wyatt or somebody was gonna question him today.”
“Really…” Con’s tone has grown icy.
“Yeah. Well, if she needs something, let me know.” Rick backs out of the office again, leaving the two alone once more.
Con grits his teeth and peels himself from Jamie, setting her down in one of his extra chairs. He wipes a tear from her eye and cradles her face for just a moment. “I’ll be back,” he says quietly. “Just stay here.”
Though anger surges through his veins, he makes his exit calmly until he shuts the door, then his steps become quick and deliberate, his ire rising with each stride.
Jason looks up from his desk and out his open door as he hears someone walking quickly. “Con? Hey, Con, where are you going?!”
Con skids to a halt as he passes by Jason’s door. He hadn’t understood what was said, but knew Jason had said something. Rage flashes in his eyes. “Thanks for telling me, Hotshot. I can’t believe you were in on something as corrupt as this.”
Jason’s eyes widen. “Wha…” He’s unable to finish as Con keeps going. “Con! Wait, what…” He’s quickly up from his desk, and out into the hall to follow after his friend.
Con ignores his follower and arrives at Rick’s office. He doesn’t even bother using the handle on the door, but kicks it open instead with a bang.
Rick is standing at the counter and jumps at the sound. Seeing the look on Con’s face, a bit of fear hits him.
Carson sees Con, and knows who he is. The look in his eye is not good – he’s out for blood. Carson slides off the table to stand, in case he needs a quick escape, though he’s not sure if he could get past this larger man.
All Con can feel is anger. The last several days replay in his mind. The fear, the horror…Jamie. He takes a step towards Carson, but is suddenly blocked by Jason.
Jason steps in front of him, holding out his arms. “Now hang on. Don’t be stupid.”
“Me?!” Con’s voice raises. “I’m not the one who brought the enemy here! What is this piece of trash doing here?!”
Jason has to back up a step, but tries to keep peace, if not for Carson’s sake, for any witness’ sake. “Look, just take it easy. He might be on our side.”
“Oh yeah, that’s what it looked like to me,” Con snaps with sarcasm. “Did you see Jamie in that basement? Did you see her before the doctors cleaned her up? No. But I did. This guy deserves to die, and you bring him here to keep him alive! He’s not staying, if I have anything to say about it.”
“Well, you don’t.” Jason stands firm. “Reese approved it, and we’re just going to deal with it.”
“Do you know what he did to Jamie?!” Con roars, his face reddening. “And you’re protecting him?! I don’t believe you!”
“We all make mistakes!” Jason slings back. “It’s not like you haven’t hurt or killed before, so give this a chance, for TJY’s sake!”
Being put in the same category as someone like Carson is the last straw. The only thing he can see is Jamie in that basement. Fear has turned to anger and hate. Not only is Carson here now, within reach, but Jason was protecting him, and it was more than he could take.
Losing all control, Con balls up his fist and aims it with sudden force to Jason’s mouth. The impact is so great that the sound echoes in the room. Jason is thrown backward into the counter, knocking over bottles and a tray onto the floor with a clatter.
Taken completely by surprise, Jason sinks to the floor, putting a hand to his bleeding lip. The physical pain didn’t match his shock. He and Con had fought before…they’d both taken swings at each other… but this one had been serious. This had been without mercy, and it had hurt.
Jason sees Con go for Carson, but knows he can’t let that happen. Carson might be their only hope in finding a link to the Agency. “No!” Lunging up off the floor, he goes for Con’s legs, bringing him to the floor.
Chaos ensues. Con rolls over and gets to his feet, overcome with anger for Jason’s interference. Instead of resuming the argument here, he grabs Jason’s shoulder and manhandles him out into the hall, slamming him up against the wall, pinning him with an arm to the throat. “Get in my way again,” he hisses, “and you’ll regret it.”
The fire in Con’s eyes almost scares Jason. He’s never seen him so mad, let alone at him. He winces under the pressure, gasping for breath until Con lets him go, turning back to the office.
Jason reaches out to grab his arm. “Don’t do it Con, it’s not worth it!”
Con whirls around, sending a backhanded slap to the side of Jason’s face, with enough force to take him to his knees.
Again, Jason rises to bring Con back down.
By now, several people in the office have heard the noise and come down the hall, Reese and Wyatt included. “What is going on?!” Reese bellows.
Jason is pinned to the floor, unable to move under Con’s weight, and receives another blow to his mouth that seems to rattle everything in his head.
“Con!” Wyatt goes for him, dragging him off of Jason.
The next few minutes are a blur as it takes three men to finally get Con backed up against the wall, panting and unable to move.
Jason picks himself up off the floor, dizzy and bleeding, unsure of what all just happened.
Reese glares at Con. “What in heaven’s name has gotten into you?!”
“This whole place!” Con is seething. “I can’t believe what you’ve compromised. What you make your people do. What everyone here goes through! And you have the gall to bring the enemy here! This is it. I can’t take it anymore.”
“Well you’re not quitting,” Reese rolls his eyes.
“Oh, no?” Con glares at him. “Try me.”

Explosion
Shock
*Nate brings his hand to Laura's chin as she hangs her head. Gently he put pressure on his finger so it lifts Laura's head Not so much she has to look at him but enough so she isent hanging it down anymore.*
"Never hang your head and be ashamed of your emotions and feelings. Anyways your to pretty to hide your face, even if tears fill your eyes."
*Not wanting to embaress, or make Laura feel uncomfortable any more Nate backs away a few steps and smiles.*
"Ok, but if Con cant, I have no problem taking you. I dont have much work to do today so it wouldent be a problem."
*Nate turns and starts to walk back into TJY calling over his shoulder.*
"Remember, keep your chin up."
*Misty receves Ricks orders and gets to work. Taking some clean cloths and some water she gently pats Carson's wounds talking alowd about what she is doing.*
"I'm going to pat the wound and not rub it. Rubing it will cause the tair the sticking, making it bleed and open the wound again. This is just water for now, we want to make sure all the remnints of the bullet are out our you could be having a reaction to that."
*Misty continues to wash the wound. After finishing she goes to the cubard and pulls out the Iodine and some new bandages.*
"This might sting alittle bit so if it does. I'm sorry."
*Misty pours some iodine onto Carson's wound pating the extra from the non damaged area. Afterwords Misty starts to wrap the bandage around Carsons shoulder and under his arm. Misty catches his eyes once and for a moment cant break her gaze. He had remarkable blue eyes. Finally looking away Misty comment softly.*
"Your pritty lucky, if you had gotten shot alittle more to the left you probley would be siting here and my first day would have been pritty boring."
*Misty cracks alittle smile and finishes with the bandage.*
"Ok Rick its all patched up should we give him something for the pain?"
*Jamie smiles as she aims for her desk. Many people stop and give her hugs asking how she is doing and how she feels. Jamie can feels the eyes on her. Feeling selfcontius enough about the marking on her face having everyone look at her wasent helping any. Trying her best she doesent let it bother her. Almost to her desk the words from Dr. Tailbit enter her mind. Jamie would rather not go back to the hospetal. Rerouting Jamie aims for Ricks office seeing if many he can take the stiches out for her. Jamie knocks softly on the door and opens the door steping in. Stoping dead in her tracks Jamie's eyes meet Carson's. A wave of fear and confustion pass over her. What...what on earth was he at TJY. Backing up slowly Jamies exits the office without saying a word bumping into a cubicle behins her. Turning tears almost eater Jamies are she feels as though she is going to be sick. Every inch of her seemed to suddanly hurt. There was one place Jamie new she would feel safe. Almost running Jamies makes her way to Con's office. Not even knocking on the door Jamie walks in. Fear filled her mind to much to worry about being polite. Shuting the door behind her Jamie leans aganst it and slids to the ground. Unable to controll her tears they finally break forth.*
"Con...I...dont understand...why...why is he here?"
Embarrassed
Con grins, but has to agree with Jamie. "He gives me the creeps too. Come on." He puts an arm around her shoulders and walks with her through the hospital to outside, settling into the car. He's quiet on the way to TJY, just thinking about going back there... the strange feelings tied to it. He didn't want to have to contemplate it...he'd never thought he'd feel this way, but he did.
Arriving, he parks in his usual spot unaware that across the lot, his sister is in her car. Con gets out and waits for Jamie to walk with her inside, holding the door for her. Reaching the floor, he lets her go towards her own desk. "I'm gonna get a few things in my office...if you need anything, let me know, alright?" He gives her shoulder a squeeze before taking off down the hall.
Carson can't help his grimace as Misty investigates his wound, "Yeah, 'on fire' would be a good way to put it." He shakes his head at her question. "I don't know. I've been banged up so many times, I couldn't tell ya what they've given me." He catches Misty's eye, wondering what she thinks...she was obviously new here...and her first job was to help the enemy. How must she feel?
Rick leaves his task unfinished and comes to look over Misty's shoulder. "Hmm...I wonder if it's that disinfectant I used. I remember there was only one other time someone reacted...it was Wyatt I think." He nods to the large medicine cabinet. "Misty, why don't you grab the iodine over there. Clean the wound out the best you can with some of the sterile cloths and hot water first just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Then get some iodine on there and put a new bandage on. We'll see if that helps. If not, we can try giving him a shot of antibiotics, but I'd rather not unless we have to."
Carson lifts one eyebrow slightly at the mention of a shot. If there was one thing he hated, it was needles.
Laura shifts her head at the knock on her window and sees Nate's form as hears his voice. Her shoulders droop even further, and she wishes for a hole that would open up and swallow her right there so she could avoid her embarrassment.
Having no choice but to accept the fact that she'd been cornered, Laura reaches for the door handle and slowly steps out of the car. Her head hanging, she shuts the door and sniffs, leaning back against the car and scuffing the toe of her shoe on the ground.
Still looking at her feet, she takes the back of her hand to swipe her eyes, her makeup smearing even more. The heat creeps up her neck as she knows she looks a sight. "I'm sorry, Nate," she mumbles, her voice still shaky. "I don't know what's wrong with me."
Laura crosses her arms, unwilling to look up at him. She sniffs again. "My car's been having trouble...I don't think jumping it will help. Just...it's alright...I don't want to take you away from work. I'll just have somebody else take me later I guess...Maybe if Con comes in...or something..."
Infection
*Jamie smiles at Con. It felt good to hear Con tell her she was included as well in his life too. It made her tingle and her heart jump. It was nice to have someone care for her again and show they really cared.*
"Ya I guess it does huh! I'll see you soon."
*About an hour after Con leaves nurses come in and out of the office checking on Jamie making sure all is well before she leaves. Finally Dr. Tailbit enters smiling at Jamie.*
"How are you feeling Miss. Franklin?"
*Jamie replys to the Dr. slowly watching what she says befor he askes anymore questions.*
"I'm ready. Still sore but I am guessing thats to be exspected. All in all I feel good."
*Dr. Tailbit nods and comes over to Jamie checking on her scar the bandage now removed, also checking her other burses and cuse.*
"Everything looks good, and your mending well. Your going to have to come back in about a week to get those stiches removed other than that your good to go."
*As Dr. Tailbit turns to leave he looks over his shoulder at Jamie one last time.*
"Make sure next time you choose your friend more caushely. Sometimes the people we think are good can put up front and deep down they still are dirt. I dont want to have to see you laying in that bed again."
*Dr. Tailbit leaves as another nurse comes into to remove the IVs and other masheens Jamie is hooked up. The last nurse exits the room as Con enters. Jamie is dressed in a light teal tank top and black jeans. Smiling at Con and stading she sways just alitte but gets her footing and is fine. Walking over to Con she throws her arms around him. Something she hasent been able to do to well while she was in bed. Grabing her purse and other stuff Con had braught for her Jamie turns to head out the door.*
"I'm ready. Lets get out of there. That Dr. gives me the creeps."
*As Misty see Wyatt her face lights up. He's always been her fav. They got along so well. Returning the hug Misty cant help but smile even bigger.*
"Hey, it has been a long time. To long if you ask me."
*As Reese gives his request to Wyatt and lets Misty to Rick she turns and places her stuff on the empty desk in the office.*
"I'm guessing this one will be mine?"
*As they wait for Wyatt to come back with Carson Misty looks around the office. Familurizing herself with where everything is. It was the number one rule. Always know where EVERYTHING is. So if something happens you dont wast time looking in the wrong place.
Within minutes Wyatt is back with Carson. As he enters Misty turns eyeing him for a few minutes and not saying anything. As Carson removes his shirt and she lays eyes on his bandage she cant help but gulp she was alittle bit nervouse working on someone without on of her professers around. Rick was there though to help if she needed it so that braught her comfort. After hearing her instructions from Rick with confadince Misty walks over to Carson, removing the bandages slowly throwing them into the Hazord bucket. Misty can feel Carson percing blue eyes on her but she trys to ignore the feeling and work.*
"Rick the wound is pritty swoled, lots of irratation, Its a bit black around the bullet hold as well. I can understand why he is in pain. It probley feels like your arm in on fire."
*Turning her head to look at Carson she asks.*
"Do you have any allergies to medicen? Cuz it looks like an allergic reaction to something."
*As Laura makes her way out of TJY Nate become conserned. Laura was in no shape to be driving and they dident need another person in the hospetal right now. Even is Nate just followed her to make sure she made it home ok, he would be happy. As he leaves the building Nate can see Laura try to start her car but nothing happens. Seeing her slam her fists into the dashbored and start to sob his heart acks. He dident want to invade her space but he couldent leave her there alone. Not at a time like this. Walking over to Laura's car Nate bends down and knocks on the window.*
"Would you like me to jump your car? Or I can drive you home real fast. No questions asked I promise."
Crying
Con knows that Jamie is still nervous, and approaches her side to run the back of his hand along her cheek. "I may have a life, but that includes you now, doesn't it?" He gives her a wink. "I'll be back in a bit."
Finally he makes his exit, heading out of the hospital without a whole lot he's willing to think about. He numbly goes through the motions of going home, automatically checking the house before entering, and keeping a wary eye out for anything strange.
It doesn't take him long to shower, change clothes and listen to his answering machine. He sees a couple days worth of mail on the table, but ignores it for now. It could wait.
Making it back to the hospital close to noon, he aims back for Jamie's room and knocks on the door before entering. "Hey...I'm ready whenever you are."
"Hey, Wyatt!" Reese stops his son as he sees him walk past Rick's lab.
Wyatt skids to a halt and turns around in surprise. Seeing Misty, he grins. "Well hey, Cousin!" He approaches, giving her a big hug. "Long time no see!"
Reese hates to break up the light reunion, but must. "Wyatt, sorry, but Rick is waiting to see Carson. Would you mind? I've got to get back to work." He gives Misty a grin. "I'll leave you in Rick's hands now. If you need anything, just give a holler."
Wyatt heaves a weary sigh and nods. "I'll be back." Heading back down the hall he goes for the holding cell.
In minutes, he's back. Carson trudges slowly in front of him, unsure what this day is going to hold. He's glad to be out of the room...but receiving the strange looks from other people makes him wonder if this was such a great idea.
Rick greets him coolly, though tries to remain professional, despite his personal feelings. "Carson. How's the arm?"
"Hurts like heck."
"Mm." Rick points to the table. "Come on, let's take a look at it."
Carson goes to sit on the table, pulling off his shirt, and wincing at the movement. Even though covered with the bandage, it's obviously swollen around the wound.
Rick turns his back to put away what he'd been working with. "Misty, would you take off that bandage and check that out? I got the bullet out yesterday, but I want to make sure there aren't any fragments in there."
Carson lifts an eyebrow at the new face in the office, but keeps his mouth shut.
Laura grits her teeth, trying not to allow any more tears to come. Nate was being so sweet. She could feel his eyes on her face though she dared not look back. She knew he was right...she needed to just give up all her worrying and forge ahead. It just seemed so hard right now.
As her walls of protection begin to buckle under the strain, she scoots her chair back from her desk and stands up, grabbing her purse. Unable to look Nate in the eye, she tries to throw him a smile before she breaks. Her voice is shaky, her eyes turning red. "I...I forgot some stuff at home...I need to go get it... thanks for...for talking." She quickly exits her cubicle, heading at a fast walk towards the door, not even acknowledging someone calling her name. She knows she probably shouldn't be driving, but she'd made up her mind anyway.
Once outside, she heads for her car and gets in, turning the key in the ignition. Nothing. She tries again, and the engine sputters for a moment, then dies.
It's the last straw.
Laura pounds her fist on the dashboard with frustration. "What else?!" she shouts. Finally the tears come forth all at once, a sob following them. She leans forward to rest her forehead on the steering wheel, her shoulders shaking as she cries. Her mascara starts to run down her cheeks, but she doesn't care. She just hurt and she didn't know why. Maybe it was just everything that was going wrong today. Maybe it was just feeling other people's pain around her. Maybe it was because she knew she couldn't run to her brother this time. Maybe there was no reason at all for these stupid tears. But they were there, and they just wouldn't stop.
Bad Day
*Jamie get a small look on her face by Con's confustion. He never wanted to see TJY again. For Con that was strange. TJY was his life, everything to him. Something was going on inside his head. Jamie couldent place her finger on it now, but maybe later she would see if she could find out what was going on. Giving a Con a reasuring smile she nods.*
"Oh ya I should be ok. If I need anything I have you cell. You dont need to spend all your time here Sweetheart. You have to have a life too."
*Jamie holds her smile though on the inside she was nervouse. She new everything was going to be ok. But her mind just wouldent agree.*
*As Nate watches Laura his heart acks. He was closes with Con than her, but still she was his friend and hated seeing her sad. She has such a pretty face anyone would agree that tears dident belong here. Slowly Nate places a hand on Laura's should still in his squating postion. Compashion in his eyes. *
"Hey, Its ok. We all have bad days and I know it seems like when it rains it pours. Trust me I have had my share of those days too, But Laura..."
*Nate takes his hand from Laura's shoulder and gently tucks the hair that feel infront of her face behind her ear so he could see her face better.*
"...your a strong person and your gonna be ok. You have to laugh right back in lifes face hold your head up and remember things will get better. And if you feel thats it really is just to much, turn your troubles over to God and he will care for you. It will be ok."
*Misty hold her smile to Rick and shakes his hand giving a friendly nod.*
"Its very nice to meet you. My Uncil told me alot about you and what goes on here at TJY. I am very excited about being able to walk here. I think this will be the best place to learn all i need to know. You guys see alot of differnt stuff that normal hospetils dont."
*Misty is silent for a while listoning to Reese and Rick talk. Taking in everything she hears and placing it in her memorie bank. Finally when there is a break in the talk Misty speaks up again.*
" Whatever you need me to do Rick just let me know. I am ready to jump in headfirst."
Stress
Con pays attention to Jamie as she talks, reminding himself that he needs to lest he miss something. He sighs a little and nods. "Yeah, I'll probably head into work sometime today, though I'd just as soon never see that place again." He bites his tongue, not quite having wanted to say that out loud, and quickly moves on. "I think you should rest instead of doing work, but if you want, I'll take you in. I should run home and shower...get some clean clothes on, then come back here." He cocks his head a little. "You be okay for a while?"
Reese chuckles and slings an arm around Misty's shoulder. "Alright, let's take you down to meet Rick."
He leads Misty down the main floor, pointing out several people to greet along the way before they turn down the hall of offices. A shorts ways down they come to Rick's lab and office.
Rick is standing at the counter examining some blood samples of Con and Jason's, still trying to find anything out about the strange poison that he can. Hearing someone enter, he turns, a smile forming. "Well, good morning."
"Misty, this is Rick, Rick, Misty," Reese informally introduces.
Rick steps forward to shake Misty's hand. "Pleasure. I've been looking forward to having a second set of hands around here. Things can stay pretty quiet sometimes, but when it rains it pours, and at the moment I'm backed up on research."
Thinking of their current case, Reese questions him. "Seen Carson this morning?"
"No." Rick shakes his head. "I was waiting for Wyatt or Nate to come in first in case there was any trouble."
Reese looks to Misty. "Carson's our resident p.o.w. I guess you could say. Got shot in the shoulder and we're keeping him here in our holding cell at the moment."
Laura lifts her head as she hears Nate fooling with the computer. Once it's fixed, she quirks a weary smile. "Thanks, Nate. Scott's been over here a million times lately - I think I must have some magnetic pull or something - anytime I touch it it breaks." She rolls her eyes and sighs.
Her eyes glance over the note on the wall and she remembers. "Oh, and thanks for the note. I think I'm gonna have to read it several times today if things keep going like they are."
As Nate suggests going out for lunch, Laura's eyebrow raises just slightly, though she suppresses any surprise, and looks at him with apology instead. "You know what, I've got a stack of paperwork to go through, Reese is riding my tail about the Hinley case from Boughton county, Jason's supposed to be meeting with me about this latest mess, sometime today I have to run to the store, I've got to get together with Con at some point, I have a zillion emails waiting for replies, and about ten different phone calls to field agents who need answers on their own cases..."
Laura's voice trails off as she realizes just how much is on her plate. The weight of recent events seems to be pressing down on her harder than ever, and she's struggling just to stand up under it. She didn't normally let her emotions get the best of her, but she can feel the tears building behind her eyes. So many people she loved had gotten hurt lately. Her mind takes her back to her conversation with Katie about the past, and she's flooded with memories again as concern for her brother persists. She just wanted to fix everything so it was all alright again. Her emotions had been brought to the surface while dealing with what Con had been going through, and now she felt completely out of control. She just felt so...emotional all of a sudden, which wasn't like her. She was known for her strength, and felt silly for not seeming to be able to pull out of this one. But with everything going wrong this morning, it just seemed to make it all the worse.
As her lower lip starts to quiver, she turns away from Nate to concentrate on a report at her desk and swallows hard, letting her damp hair fall around her face to hide the tear that finally escapes.
Jason finally makes it to TJY and heads directly to his office, wanting to get organized before he was bombarded with anything else. He'd probably wind up with Carson a bit later, but for now, he just needed to get focused.
Turning on his computer, he checks his email and simply scans until he reaches Wyatt's. His eyes widen. The law had him on a list of suspects for murder. He knew that most times, TJY did a good enough job of cleaning things up that no one was ever found, much less arrested, and never convicted. But...it didn't take away the concern.
Jason decides to inform only Reese. No one else need know. They had enough other things to worry about.
I got the short geans?
*Jamie smiles at Con. By the look on his face she can tell he probley dident hear her.*
"GoodMorning. It was peaceful after I woke up that once. I have a feeling I'll probley have many nights like that for alittle bit. But it will get better in time as my mind starts to mend itself I think."
*Jamie searchs Con's eyes. Something was differnt and going on inside his head though Jamie couldent see it. *
"Ya I will probley going to be going home around lunch time. So when ever you, or Laura, both of you or whatever have time to make is over its not a problem. I might stop by TJY and pick up some backed work. Are you heading into work today?"
*Siting down in one of the chairs Mistly smiles sweetly as her uncil goes over a bunch of information. *
"You could never bore me Uncil Reese, I've always like listing to you talk."
*Misty is amazed by all the information she takes in. She new TJY was something intense but she had no idea it was this large. Smiling again Misty stands coming up to about Reese's chin. She shakes her head and giggles.*
"I guess I got the short geans in the family huh? Ok..let head to the office I am rip roaring and ready to go."
*Nate can see the frustration in Laura's eyes as he pass by. Feeling her pain by her bad day he turns and enters the cubicle bendoing down in a squating position and start clicking buttons on her computer.*
"Well lets see what the problem is here."
*After a few more moment of clicking and fiddaling around Nate finally gets the computer up and running.*
"There ya go all fixed."
*Nate looks at Laura for a long moment a smile coming to his face.*
"So..now that thats fixed we need to fix you bad day. How about around lunch time we grab something to eat, and scream that stress away."
Rub off
Jason looks back over his shoulder as Katie talks to him, and flashes her a smile. "See you later." He slips from the room, heading outside and to TJY.
Con doesn't hear Jamie, but as he turns back around, he notices that she's awake. He forces a smile to his face, trying not to let his tiredness show. "Morning... how'd you sleep?" He rests his hands on his hips, needing to decide what on earth he's doing today. "I'm gonna call Laura in a while and see if she'll come on over to your place for a couple days, if that's still what you're wanting to do."
Reese grins at Misty. "Flying colors, huh? I wouldn't have expected anything else!" He gestures to a chair. "Well, have a seat and we'll talk work to get you started so I don't bore you with needless chatter."
He sinks back down into his chair and relates some information to Misty about TJY in general and what's been happening. "Rick should be in any time now if you want to go with me down to his office and he can take you from there."
Laura is startled by Nate's bumping into the cubical wall and she looks up in surprised amusement. "I'll give you fair warning, Nate, don't come near me unless you want my morning to rub off on you, and trust me, you wouldn't want..." Her voice trails off as she sees her computer crash. Moaning, she throws herself forward to her desk, her head falling onto her folded arms. "I should have just not come in at all this morning," she mumbles.
It Jumped out
*As Jason kiss Kaite softly and runs his hand through her hair she opens her eyes slowly with a smile on her face. Just as Jason is about to reach the door Katie calls to him.*
"Have a good day Jason and see you at lunch."
*Katie smiles as Jason leaves, she feels so warm and happy. Things were looking better every day.*
*Jamie slowly stirs as she streches alittle. Today she was able to go home. As much as she dident want to she was kind of happy. Looking over to Con Jamie smiles.*
"Morning Sweety"
*As Misty Hugs her Uncil back her smile widens and her nervisness is gone.*
"Uncil Reese, Its been to long. I had a great trip. Its so warm here. I love it. I've been doing really good. Passed all my school class with flying colors and I am excited about stating my internship. Its good to be home."
*Misty lets go of Reese holding her smile. It had been almost 3 years since the last time she saw him. He still looked the same though. It really was good to be home.*
*Nate makes his way across the floor, accidently bumping into Laura cubicle.*
"Oh wow Miss, I am so sorry. I dident see your desk there. It jumped out and tryed to attack me."
*Giving a grin and a laugh Nate starts to walk away.*
"Morning Laura."
3/27/08
Work day
Jason grins at Katie, then hearing nothing, turns to see her already asleep. Mustering the gumption to get up and take his shoes off, he flops back down, exhausted by how little sleep he’s had the last few days. He lies on his side, just watching Katie sleep for several minutes. Things had changed in the blink of an eye…but it was a change he wouldn’t resist. Not this one. Not this time.
As morning dawns, Jason hears his watch alarm beeping underneath his pillow. Yawning, he rolls over and stretches, feeling as though he’d slept like a rock all night – the firs night in a long time that he had slept so well. Finally having gained back energy, he slides out of bed and hits the restroom with a clean set of clothes, emerging a while later, showered and changed, his colon lingering in the air. He sits down to lace up his boots, and sees Katie still sleeping. As much as he’d like to spend the morning with her, he knows Reese will want him in, especially after having the afternoon and evening before off.
Grabbing his jacket and gloves, he quietly goes to Katie’s bed, bending down to give her forehead a soft kiss, and run a hand through her hair. He turns, heading for the door, hoping to return over lunch.
Con wakes with a start as someone wheels a squeaky cart down the hall. His neck was stiff from his position in the chair, giving him a headache, and his bad ear was throbbing. As he moves to lean forward and stretch, he realizes Jamie’s hand is still in his as she sleeps. He carefully withdraws until his fingers are free, and rises to stand, stretching tall. Yawning, he glances at his watch. He didn’t want to go to work…the last thing he wanted was to go to work…
Reese turns from his computer at the sound of the knock. “Come in.” As he sees his niece, a smile spreads. “Well look who’s here.” He stands up from his desk to go and offer a bear hug. “Mm, it’s good to see you! I trust you had a good trip. How have you been?”
Laura steps out of her car, just to have her purse get caught on the seatbelt. Struggling for a moment, she growls with frustration before ripping it loose and slamming the door. Throwing her arms up in the air, she unlocks the car again to reach inside and grab her ID card to enter TJY. This was simply not her day.
Stalking to the door, the mechanism jams and it takes four tries for it to accept her card and allow her inside. Heading to her desk, she runs a hand through her mess of wet hair that she hadn’t been able to dry after her blowdryer had shorted out. Her stomach grumbles in complaint of being empty, and she rolls her eyes. That was the second thing she needed to pick up at the mall – an alarm clock that actually worked. There hadn’t been any time for breakfast this morning.
Receiving several greetings from others, she offers only slight waves. Getting to her desk, she tosses her purse down and looks around, only now realizing that she’d forgotten the paperwork from home. Letting out a groan, she sinks into her chair, putting a hand to her forehead.
Sighing, she finally straightens and reaches out to turn on her computer, only now realizing there is a stickynote on her monitor. She takes it down and squints at it, confused until she reads it. The first smile of the morning comes to her lips and she shakes her head, sticking it to the side of her cubicle to keep. Nate was sweet.
Carson splashes some cold water on his face from the small sink and tries to make himself more alert. His shoulder felt like it was on fire from yesterday’s bullet, and it was redder than it should be. He feared infection, but who around here would care?
Sighing, he flops back down on his cot, just waiting for any other signs of life. He knew it was morning, but that was the extent of his knowledge.
A new face but old friend.
*Katie sits and eats her ice cream slowly but not as slow as she would like. The Night air was warm and melted it fast. Finally as both there ice creams are finished Katie knows its time for them to make there way back to the hospetal.
As Katie receves Jason's words and kiss she cant help but smile. Kissing him back for a fast moment, than replying.*
"Me too."
*Puting her helmet back and and fermly placing her arms around Jason's wast once more they wisk off twords the hospetal. It take no time at all to get back and make it back to Katie's room. Seeing the flowers from Wyatt and everyone at TJY Katie smiles. Making a mentil note to call tomarrow and thank them.
At the mention of a movie Katie giggles and yawns herself.*
"Something tells me I wouldent eather. How about we do a movie tomarrow."
*Qwerking a smile Katie looks at Jason and says.*
"I think its from all the fresh air we got tonight. It helps ya sleep well."
*Katie smile remain as misgef dances in her eyes showing she wants to say more but thinks best of it. Leaning her head aganst her pillow Katie turns her head to Jason.*
"Sleep well J, and I'll see you in the morning. Thank you for the best night of my life."
*With in minutes Katie is fast asleep, dream of what happend that night.*
*As Con's sooth Jamie's mind and soul she slowly closes her eyes. Feeling his hand in her a smile comes to her face. Sleeping finding her slowly but happens non the less.*
*Morning finally breaks as the sun peeks its first ray of lights over the harizon calling for the world to wake. The radient rays of light dart from here to there casing away every shadow from the night. The Dove coo, and the frogs sing there song of good morning.
A soft pitter patter sounds though the halls of TJY as a new comer makes her way to Reese office. Dressed in Black chunky healed shoes with a box toe, white dress pants, and a white light pink shirt. Her long awburn hair hands around her shoulders and down her back ending at about her lower back. Strating her shirt she gives a soft knock on Reese door.*
Messages
Jason grins. "Alright." He finds out what Katie wants, and goes inside to get the ice cream, returning just a few minutes later. He hands Katie's hers, before having to make a quick lick on his own as it drips down the side of his cone.
Swinging his leg over the bike seat, he straddles it backwards so he can see Katie. "This..." he holds up his ice cream, "...stays between you and me." His eyes flicker with amusement as he takes another lick, enjoying the cold treat. "Rick would kill me for eating this as my supper." He thinks for a moment, growing serious. "Though...having my obituary say "death by ice cream" would at least be one of a kind." Catching Katie's eye he breaks back into a grin, giving into a laugh.
It doesn't take long for the ice cream is finished, and Jason knows they need to head back. He set his hands on his hips. "Well..." A deep sigh comes. "Guess we'd better hit the road." He swivels around to face forward and is just ready to put his helmet on, when he stops, pausing again. He twists back towards Katie, reaching over to run a finger along her cheek. "Thanks, Hero...I'm...looking forward to being more than friends..." He lets his gaze linger on hers for just a moment before leaning back to give her lips a quick kiss, then turns back around, slipping on his helmet. The engine roars to life and Jason waits until he feels Katie's arms around his waist before starting forward and aiming for the hospital.
Once back, it takes just a few minutes for them to make their way back inside, up to the second floor and to Katie's room. The nurse eyes them suspiciously from her station but says nothing, and Jason can't help throwing Katie a funny look, conveying his amusement at the nurse.
Inside the room, on the small table sits a fresh bouquet of flowers with a note. "From us all at TJY. Can't wait to see you back again - we're counting the days!" It is written with Wyatt's handwriting, and a PS is at the bottom. "Ty and I missed ya again. Will have to get together soon. Looking forward to hearing you at the fundraiser."
Taking off his jacket, Jason falls backward onto the extra bed, closing his eyes, though his feet are still on the floor. "I was gonna suggest a movie, and was seriously considering staying up into the wee hours of the morning...but something tells me I'm not gonna last more than ten minutes."
Con offers Jamie a smile. "I'd say 'you're welcome' but you don't owe me any thanks in the first place....I'm just glad you're okay." He squeezes her hand and lets it go, reaching over to brush her hair from her face.. "Try to go back to sleep...I'm not going anywhere." Though his mind is in turmoil with questions he can't yet answer, he tries not to let it show. He takes her hand again as reassurance of his presence, settling back in his chair again.
Wyatt sinks down in his desk chair, having decided to take a night shift, and unable to sleep after the day's events. He looks down at his schedule and sighs. Several cases were put on hold due to what had happened with Jamie, in an attempt to not draw any more attention in TJY's direction. Tomorrow they would have to talk with Carson and make a decision about him one way or the other. Laura was supposed to be getting some paperwork to him on the Halloway trial, Rick was trying to get a hold on some new equipment to bring in during the next few days, and even the hospital's fundraiser was on the calendar as a handful of staff would be going - not only to see Katie, but to support the hospital.
Sighing, Wyatt shifts to his computer, checking out some updated files, and scanning messages received from contacts. One in particular catches his eye. "Wyatt - Just got word that a couple detectives down here are reopening the case where that one guy was killed by the R/M ranch. From what I can tell, they've got a couple leads, and one points in Jason's direction. I'm going to try and throw them off the trail, but their superior is pretty determined. Do with this information what you must. - Eddie"
Wyatt's eyes widen. They'd had staff investigated before and had always been able to thwart the authorities before they got too far. This was nothing new, but it was worth keeping an eye on it. He shoots Jason a quick email to warn him.
The Note
*As Katie and Jason head down the road Katie puts her arms around Jason's wast once again. Making sure to hold on tight. Leaving the beach and water behind the memorie of what happend there lives on in Katie memorie. The rocks, trees and night sky shaired in the glorieus moment as well.
Finally pulling into the parking lot, Katie removes her helmet after Jason turns the bike off. Taking in a deep breath of crisp air. A smile still on her face, the brightness and color still in her cheeks.*
"I would mind eating out here as long as you dont mind as well. Its nice out, and I am inside the hospetal all the time so the fresh air is nice."
*Kaite swings her leg over the bike just siting for a moment. Standing she streches alittle still leaning on the bike for sapport.*
*Jamie's sob finally stop and her breathing becomes normal once again as the memories that entered her mind left with the sound of Con's voice. It was soft and soothing offering comfort and shelter. The strength in his voice was reasuring that nothing would happen and she was safe now. Still holing Con's hand Jamie leans back and rests her head on her pillow once again.*
"Thank you Con, for just being here. It means alot."
*As Nate stands he throws another Mouse into Ed's cage and chuckles.*
"I'll see ya tomarrow little buddy. Dont go around biting anyone alse ok."
*Nate shuts off the light and starts to head out, stoping for a moment at Laura's desk. She had been having such a hard time latly with everything Nate felt alittle bad for her. She was always so strong though. Taking a stickynote from her desk Nate draws a flower with alittle note.
"Sorry this isent the real thing but I dident have any flowers hand. Anyways this one will last longer. Hang in there Laura.
-Nate"
Placing the note on Laura's moniter Nate smiles and heads out for the night."
New Voices
Jason keeps his arm around Katie as they walk slowly back to the bike, feeling more peace than he had in a long time. There was still a lot to be gained...a lot to be learned...a lot left until he understood where his life was headed and what the future held...but for now... for now his best friend had become even more, and that was enough. He was happy.
Jason gently picks Katie up again to settle her down on the bike before straddling it in front of her. The engine starts and before they know it, the sandy beach is being left behind to dance with the moon until sunrise.
The night air is clean and crisp, the road almost deserted. Jason skillfully maneuvers the bike to their destination - a small ice cream shop at the edge of town. Several other cars are parked in the gravel lot and some chatter floats in the air. Jason parks near the building, cutting the motor and taking off his helmet. "Well, we can dine on the bike or go inside. Your call."
Con's own heart aches as he hears Jamie talk. He can't imagine what she must have gone through, and a portion of himself still feels the anger...anger towards the enemy, and anger towards himself for not being able to stop what happened.
"It'll be okay," he tries to comfort softly. "You're safe now and no one's going to hurt you." He shakes his head. "Don't be sorry...that's what I'm here for...just let it out."
Carson paces the holding room restlessly. It was going to be a long night and three cigarettes hadn't seemed to help much. He doesn't know why he shared the past with Nate...he never talked to anyone about it. It was just something he lived and put up with as something he couldn't change so he'd never attempted to think twice about it. But now that he had, the memories were back, reminding him of a time before the Agency...before his life had been turned upside down...before he'd become an animal knowing only how to hurt and kill. That's all he was now...he knew nothing else... He'd gotten in so deep that his actions had started to be who he really was...a merciless killer with no remorse.
But something, somehow... had struck a chord in his heart. He knew it had been Jamie's words that had effected him so. Now he was beginning to question himself. Now he was beginning to see again the other side of things. There were still good people out there...there was still a side to the world that wasn't corrupt, even if it was small. Carson couldn't help but long to be a part of that. And yet...how could he? He did deserve to die for all he had done. He deserved to be put in prison for life. Was it even possible for him to gain just a small taste of the world he'd missed out on? He had so much doubt. The people here in this place would surely want to murder him after what he'd helped do to one of their own.
He began to think of his offer that had saved him from being killed or released to die. He'd implied he could go back to the Agency as a double-agent and feed these other people information. But he knew the impossibility of that...the Agency was too smart...they would catch on so quickly that he wouldn't even have time to get anything relayed back here before they would put him away. The only thing he had was the information he'd gained over the years and the things that were kept in his memory. And yet...would the people here trust him? If they did, he would be surprised once again.
"What did you find?" Detective Jackman peers over his partner's shoulder to the dimly lit desk.
Marcus shakes his head. "Not much, but we might have a lead. Finally got a trace on that gun. It wasn't easy, I tell you. Someone did a good job of hiding out. But it traces back to Nevada."
"Hmm." Jackman straightens, thinking. "That's the second time Nevada has come up in that case. What's that list of names you came up with?"
Marcus digs in a pile of papers to find on sheet in particular. "I got about twenty-five here...most are Texans, but one is from Nevada..." He runs his finger down the list, landing on one name. "Yeah, this one. Jason Stevenson. Clean record, unlike the rest of the guys on this list. Works at a factory...nothing special appeared, but we did find records of his dealings with the gun shop where we think the rifle came from."
"It's worth checking out."
"Yeah. I'm gonna make a few calls come morning and narrow this list down even more. I got Garrison and Olson out hunting some of these guys down to find alibis."
"Not easy when it's been so long."
Marcus grimaces. "I know. But the captain wanted the case dug up again so he wouldn't have any loose ends in the department. I'll be surprised if we can actually close this one...I thought it was gonna be put away as an unsolved murder, but..." He sighs. "Guess not."
The Night
*Katie slowly leans up from Jason and stands, knowing this night had to come to an end sooner or later. Katie leans gently on Jason to walk back to the bike as she dosent have her cane at the moment. Looking up at the starlit sky she smiles whispering to herself. "Thank you."
With alittle help and faith Katie had found true happyness. This was another peace that fit into her puzzle of life. A soft giggle escapes from Katie mouth at the mention to ice cream and Rick.*
"Ice cream sounds good. I havent had any in ages, and I promise I wont tell Rick that you had some too. Just dont go eating to much that you throw yourself into shock."
*Katie mouth turns into a grin as she eyes twinkle in the moonlight. Geting to the bike Katie gently puts the helmit on and wait for Jason to help her up on the bike knowing she couldent do it on her own. Not yet anyways.*
*As Jamie feels Con's hand on her's, her heart starts to slow itself but the tears still emerging from her eyes.*
"It was horrable Con, I could smell that basment again, I could smell the blood. They told me you were killed, and my heart acked so much. I dident want to believe it was true, but still I had that horrable feeling of what if it was. Everything they did to me dident even amount up to as much pain as hearing you died did. I thought I lost you again."
*Jamie lets out a long sigh as she continues to talk. Leting out her emotions, she hadent cryed since she got to the hospetal and let everything that happend to her out. Finally her mind just said "enough" and like a floodgate being open the emotions pored out.*
"I could also see Sam geting shot as clear as when it happend. My mind wouldent let me forget, it kept replying it like a movie never geting to the happy ending. Even though in a sence I know there was one. I promised Sam I was going to get her out of there, and I couldent. I let her down, and I let her family down. Now he Son is without a mother. I know I shouldent blame myself cuz its not my fault, but it still hurts so much. "
*Jamie gives a sniff as she whipes her eyes with her free hand trying to get herself to stop crying. It was only a dream and she new it. But it was horrable non the less.*
"I'm sorry I woke you Con."
3/26/08
Awakened
Jason squeezes Katie’s hand back and just sits, too comfortable to move. This was different…this was new…but there was no fear. “Me either,” he finally replies softly.
The sound of the water is a soothing symphony, lulling the shore into evening slumber. Start begin to dot the sky and crickets chirp nearby.
Jason has no idea how much time has passed, and though not caring, he knows that this too must end. He eventually withdraws his hand from Katie’s grasp to glance at his watch. Running his hand through her hair and giving her head another kiss, he wishes he didn’t have to break the silence. “It’s getting late…we better get back. Mom and Pop’s will be closed by now, but if you want, we can stop by that ice cream shop on the way back into town…” He grins. “As long as you don’t tell Rick I binged.”
Con has been sleeping lightly in the chair by Jamie’s bed, getting a crick in his neck. Hearing Jamie move about, he opens his eyes, seeing her suddenly sit up. He straightens quickly and leans closer, taking her hand. “Hey…shh, it’s okay… what’s wrong?”
Wraped up in you
*Katie smiles and lets out a small giggle as Jason picks her up in his arms. Wraping her arms around his neck as they walk. Katie had been close to people before and had boyfriends, But Jason was differnt. Katie felt differnt around him, her feeling ran deeper. She felt safe, and tingaly inside, being around him anything could happen and she new Jason would be there for her.
As Katie leans aganst Jason's chest She lets out a content sigh. Leaning her head aganst his arm, she takes his hand that is laying on her check and slips her own into it locking fingers. Turning her head she plants a small kiss on Jason's for arm than leans her head back to be laying on his chest. The moon was so big and bright tonight the lit reflecting radently off the water cast its light on Katie and Jason as if wraping them in a blanket. In a small soft voice Katie replys.*
"I guess in a way I did to huh? I think it was worth it though. I wouldent trade tonight for anything in the world."
*Katie gives Jason's hand alittle squeeze.*
*Jamie toss and turns as she sleeps in bed. Memories of what happend haunt her mind. No one new but she saw Sam fall. Shot in the chest. Those memories, images rome free haunting her dreams. Pain fills Jamies as she shoots up from bed. Tears roll down her face. What a horrable feeling to have relive.*
Pact
Carson catches the pack of cigarettes with one hand, a look of surprise crossing his face. He follows back towards the cell, flipping his lighter on the way to relieve his craving, despite Nate’s fair warning.
Back in the cell, he gives a slight nod of acknowledgement and sinks back down on the cot, surrendering to the fact that it would be a long and lonely night.
Jason’s grin spreads just a little as Katie brushes his hair from his forehead. He reaches out to run a thumb along her cheek. Not long ago he would have guessed that a moment such as this would have changed too much…it would have created an awkwardness…it would have severed some part of the friendship that he and Katie already shared. But it hadn’t… Instead, it was almost a relief…as if he’d finally been let free and no longer needed to hide. There was no one he’d ever known with whom he felt as comfortable. Katie knew his heart…something he shared with no one else.
Saying nothing, Jason straightens to get to his feet. Reaching down, he easily scoops Katie up in his arms, his leather jacket creaking just as little with the movement.
His eyes seem to smile as he carries her to a sheltered spot on the beach right before the large rocks begin. He eases down to sit on the sand with his back leaning up against the rock, facing the moonlit lake. Positioning Katie in front of him between his legs to face the lake as well, he provides himself as her back rest, letting his arms fall over her shoulders to draw her back against his chest.
Taking a deep breath of the crisp evening air, he plants a light kiss on the back of her head. “You realize I just broke my own pact,” he says quietly.
Closed
*Nate smiles and reachs into his pocket pulling out a pack of smokes tossing them to Carson.*
"I always keep a few on me, for some reson it helps me NOT WANT to smoke when I have them with me. You can have them if you want. But its your lungs your killing."
*Nate walks with Carson down the hall the same way they came, finally geting back to the small cell. After following Carson in to make sure eveything is ok Nate turns to leave calling over his shoulder.*
"I'll be around doing paper work for a few more hours. If you need anything just give a yell. Night."
*Nate makes his exit heading back to his desk.*
*Katie knows this moment must come to a close, and time must go on again. As Jason draws away from Katie she pulls him close again. Pressing her lips to his one last time. As they draw away again leaning there forheads together, Katie stairs into Jason's eyes a smile lighting up her face even more. No words needed to be exchanges, the silence was to great and told its own story for the moment to be runed with words. Katie braings her hand to Jason's face and sofly brush's his hair from his forhead beaming.*
Time
Carson waits a moment, but finally stands up and shakes his head. "You're a strange one, Nate, I'll give you that. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were gonna kill me off in my sleep." He shrugs lamely. "I know better than to ask for a smoke, so no...I guess that's it."
The feel of Katie in Jason's arms drives everything else out of his mind. Her embrace...the touch of her lips...her hand running through his hair. Nothing had felt the same...nothing had evoked his emotions as much.
The sun sinking beneath the horizon places them in a moonlit expanse. Jason's heart races as he takes his time, unwilling to end this moment too quickly, lest the magic be broken. He holds Katie close with an unleashed passion, too strong for words.
But though time seems to stand still, it waits for no one, and the exchange must eventually close.
Jason slowly straightens, finding it hard to pull away. His lips meet Katie's one more time, as if wanting a simple reminder of what they'd just shared.
Finally opening his eyes, he rests his forehead against hers, leaving his arms around her. An ever-so-slight grin quirks the very corner of his mouth, and he studies each of her eyes, memorizing their enchanting gaze.
Return
*Nate nods and grins.*
"Trust me your on the right side now. How about we get you back before Reese thinks I kidnaped you."
*Nate cant help but laugh as he stands streaching.*
"If you want later when I have some time I can bring you back here. I know being held up in a room with no windows or light is not fun."
*Nate stand and heads for the door turning to wait for Carson.*
"DId you need anythng before we go back Carson?"
*As Jason's hand brushes aganst Katie's skin she looks deep into his eyes tilting her head slightly into his hand. Katie is lost in Jason's eyes. Nothing alse matter, nor can she feel anythinh but pure happyniss. As Jason moves closer to her Katie's heart starts to beat alittle faster. Listing to Jason's words in her hear sends a sock through her body as she quivers gently in his arm. A smile spreads across her face, the famus Pent smile. Katie trys to speak but her words get caught in her throt. As time slips by Katie loses focus of all that is around her except for Jason. Jason's touch, him being close to her it sent chills up her spin. As Jason's lips meets hers Katie starts to stand alittle making it easyer to reach Jason. Wraping her arms around him she kiss him back softly, but fermly. Katie arm moves from Jason back to his head slowly running her hand through his hair. Butterfly flutter through Katie tummy, and her heart beats even faster and louder. Time is lost, as Katie eyes are closed enjoying the moment, kissing Jason back emotions, memories, feeling run through Katie's mind. She has never felt like this before. Those words were not spoken She new what Jason was telling her. The warmth of his breath on hers, the sweet tast of his kiss. Like candy to her lips, she only wants more not ready to let this moment to end. The sun now setting, the moon comes out to play casting its bright light on Jason and Katie.*
Forever
Carson concentrates on spot on the floor as Nate speaks. It was ridiculous how he was trusting these people...how he was telling his own story and listening to one similar. He'd been hired to kill...not make acquaintances. Yet for an unexplainable reason, he wanted to stay.
Distrust in people causes Carson to doubt Nate's logic... He'd fed off the past for so long, he wasn't sure it was possible to escape it. And the mention of God just seemed so...unbelievable. He'd heard people talk about that stuff before, but had never put much stock in it. ...So why did it stir questions within him now? Why was he suddenly feeling as though everything he knew had been turned upside down?
Sighing, he shakes his head, bouncing his leg nervously as he chews his piece of gum. "I don't know, Nate. I haven't ever seen much purpose for my life, and it doesn't seem to be getting any clearer. I just hope I've finally chosen the right side, even if my fate is to die in the process."
Jason's hand feels Katie's, and he doesn't pull away. Instead, he returns the light grasp, saying nothing. The sun sinks lower and lower, seeming to melt into the water as the orange and pink seep across the reflective horizon.
After a few minutes of silence, Jason shifts his gaze from the shimmering water meeting Katie’s eyes again. For a long moment, the only sound is the wind and the waves rolling onto the shore.
A strange ache overtakes Jason’s heart as it yearns to be let free of the chains he has held it in. His logic fights his emotions…an intense battle waged between the two worlds. He had made a decision once…but the walls had fallen. He could no longer deny himself what he longed for.
He stares deeply into Katie’s never-ending gaze that lures him away from reality and into a place where time doesn’t exist. Everything else is forgotten. His veins run cold with an unexplainable chill, and his breath catches in his throat. He knew the look in Katie’s eye…the feel of her hand...he knew she would not refuse him.
He finds himself drawing nearer to her, his hand slowly making its way to her face, caressing her gentle features as each curve is tenderly traced. His rough palm becomes almost soft on her skin, transformed by the power of this instant.
Jason’s heart beats within him, a thousand thoughts and feelings colliding in a single moment. The wind combs Katie’s hair, the picture forever burned in his mind. Just friends was simply no longer good enough.
As if pulled by an invisible force, he leans down and tilts his head ever so slightly. His eyes close, and he feels the warmth of Kate’s face on his. His lips brush lightly against hers, sending his adrenaline racing. He swallows hard as logic tears at him, pulling him away, denying the strength of his heart. But it’s a strength too great.
Like a war silenced by a warrior’s death, the battle within comes to a sudden end. Logic will not win this time. His voice comes as a whisper in her ear. "There's more than sunsets to be held on to forever."
Jason’s hand shifts to cradle the back of Katie’s head, his fingers interlaced in her soft hair. His lips envelope hers in a passionate motion as he pulls her close, wrapping her in a strong hold.
The taste is sweet…the feeling is warm. Desire to end the moment has no existence as the intimate exchange lingers, the disappearing sun their only witness.
Words do no Justice
*Nate listens to Carson intently. It dident seem like he was telling a tall tail. The look in his eye was almots sadness and maybe really was regret. Nate's heart went out to him. How long ago was it he was lost and felt so alone. Nate himself at one time felt traped in a life he dident understand. Differnt situations but still the same feeling before he had come to TJY.*
"Never give up hope enough you wish for death on yourself. Ya you may have done some horrable things in your life, but its never to late to change and have people there to help you. Yes The Agency is rough and would come after you, but if you had people, friend who would stand behind you to protect you, you also could make it out. You took the first step this morning when you showed compation for Jamie and dident kill her. Ya you were going to leave her there, but you still had good intentions. Its never to late and God can wash you past clean for you, so you can stay a new."
*Nate goes silent for a long moment. Just thinking about the past and remembering his own pain he felt.*
"I'm sorry about your parents and your sister Carson. I am sure it was not easy seeing them die and it probley could even make a person alittle crazed. In a sence I know how you feel. At a young age right after my parents found out my little sister had downsyndrom for sure they disapeared. Who knows where they went or if there were even still alive. The police tryed to look for them, put out flyers, put stuff on the news but nothing ever came of it. Its hard losing people close to you. It really is. You just have to remember, life moves on, tomarrow is another day and you just have to deal as it comes at you. Dont dwell in the past or it will eat you alive."
*As Katie holds on tight to Jason she notices that now they are heading away from town and the Restront. Wonder dwells in Katies mind but no words are said. Katie new, Jason must have a plane for something. He always had a reson for everything. As they drive out onto the country road and the bike moves faster, Katie s heart starts to race more with excitment. How wonder ful this way. Katie felt so carfree. As they near the lake Katie cant help but smile under her helmet. The Lake had become one of the hangout spots Katie seemed to be at the most and rather enjoyed it. Once the moter on the bike is turns off Katie swings her other leg around and just sits on the bike her legs dangling not being able to touch the ground. Katie gazes out at the harizon listing to the soft splash of water hits the rocks it was more than breath taking. Turning her head to Jason Katie's smile is still held, the last rays of the colorful sunset being reflected off her eyes as they dance around looking into Jason's"
"Its sure is. For some reson though that word dosent seem to quite cover it. I can think of so many words, and yet non of them will do it justice. What a great view. Away from the city lights and noise."
*Katie looks into Jason's eyes for a while longer, not being able to drop her gaze. Finally catching her breath again, she loses it ask her feeling stir inside of her. Looking back out at the sky, without even caring what would be said or how Jason would react, Katie slips her hand into his ever so lightly, but stong enough to still know its there.*
"It is very pretty. One of a kind. We wont even see another one like it. So we better lock it in our memorie bank and hold on to it forever."
Side Trip
Jason can feel Katie wrap her arms around him, and though knowing she’s simply hanging on to stay on the bike, he can’t help his enjoyment. As she leans her head on his shoulder, he almost wishes he could turn around, but both hands remain on the handle bars.
As they’re headed downtown, Jason catches sight of the sunset. It’s breathtaking even to him, but it’s quickly covered by the buildings in town. Throwing all sense into the wind for once, Jason hangs a right instead of going to Mom and Pop’s. Shifting gears, the bike jumps forward as he accelerates down the side street that winds out of town. “Hang on,” he calls over his shoulder, simply allowing there to be question of where they were going.
The sunset becomes more brilliant with each passing minute as it nears the horizon. Jason takes them out onto a country road with a perfect view of the gorgeous sight. Instead of stopping though, he heads clear out of town, finding several more side roads until they’re approaching the lake.
Slowing down, he’s careful to find the best route down close to the shore where there is enough solid ground for the bike. He parks perpendicular to the water’s edge for a perfect view out across the lake to the display of light.
Cutting the engine, he takes off his helmet and runs a hand through his hair. He puts the kickstand down and shifts his weight, swinging his leg around so he’s almost sitting sideways on the bike for a better view. Knowing he need not explain why he skipped the restaurant, he just stares at the sunset for several minutes.
He finally turns with a slight grin to Katie and reaches over to take off her helmet, setting it to the side. “Pretty, isn’t it.”
Yet again, Carson is surprised. What was with these people? He’d tortured one of their own, yet they were showing him mercy. Jason hadn’t killed him. Rick had bandaged him up and fed him. Nate was here now offering him interaction. It all seemed so bizarre.
Carson doesn’t say anything for several minutes, but does take a piece of gum. Finally sitting down across from Nate, he shrugs. “What’s there to tell? I’ve been a hitman and the top choice when it came to interrogation through the Agency. Over the last ten years I’ve killed under orders, I’ve tortured under orders, and during the last five years, I did it without blinking.”
His eyes shift around the room, not willing to land on Nate’s. “Started out as something I was forced to do, and now I got enough blood on my hands that I don’t think the stains can be removed.”
Carson shakes his head, pausing, feeling an odd sense of vulnerability that he didn’t normally feel. “Something hit me this morning…I don’t know…I guess Jamie reminded me of my sister. My family was involved with the Agency at one point, but they wanted out. My parents and sister were killed because they refused to conform. I was the coward of the family, and broke under the pressure. The Agency forced me to work for them if I wanted to stay alive.” Carson’s face shows no emotion, his voice flat and drained of life.
“So I did. I guess I got too good at it and pretty soon I didn’t care anymore. Until this morning…I saw all you out there fighting with your lives, and you were actually succeeding. I guess maybe I was stupid enough to take another chance and see if you guys really could take down the Agency.” He pauses for a moment. “I don’t care if I live or die anymore…working for the Agency has been a living hell, and I wish I would have died with the rest of my family. So if I go down for this, I’m better off. The Agency would catch on so fast if I went back to them that I’d be dead within twenty-four hours. I stay here, and they’ll have that sniper after me instead of Con. Either way, I get what I deserve.”
Sunset
*Nate walks along side Carson, insted of infront or behind him. To Nate when someone did that they were saying we are equil. I am not better than you and you are no better than me. As Nate walks down the long hallway they pass pictures of differnt people in TJY, and of differnt avents Finally making it to the room Nate opens the door and lets Carson in. There is a window that is cracked slightly, and and a small table. There is also a sink and a little microwave. Nate sits down at the small table that is lined with books. Reaching into his pocket her pulls out a pack of gum and sets it on the table.*
"That might help you with your shakes. I know it did me. So Carson, tell me about youself."
*Nate trys to let his face expresstion soften. He had seen something in Carson face in the woods. He had shown compation for Jamie, and even killed one of his own to protect them. Nate was intreged and wanted to know more about Carson.*
*As Jamie makes her way slowly down the hall she smiles. It was nice to be WALKING with Jason again and not rolling. Even though she had to use the cane she was thankful to be walking at all. Finally making it to Jason's bike she beams as he helps her with the helmit, postions and geting on. As Jason starts the engin Katies heart starts to race and her adrenilin runs faster than before. Slowly and gently Katie puts her arms around Jason waist and holds on tight. As Jason starts off Katie becomes more excited than before. She cant help but let out a laugh as they are heading down the road. How free it felt to be on the back of the bike. As Katie looks around to take in the sceans flying by. Everything seemed differnt more fun looking at it from the back of a motercicle. As She looks to her right Katie sees the sun seting. It looks amazing. The sky was soft pink, and reads, a bit of purple and orange mixed in too. Leaning her head on Jason's shoulder Katie take in the sunset and Jason being so close to her. Something was differnt. Maybe it was the excitment from riding the bike, but it felt differnt but good. Katie sighs in contentmint.*
*Jamie smiles at Con still holding his hand, her eyes slowly closeing.*
