Good Voice

*Katie cant help but smile through her tears enjoyin the moment. She backs away alittle bit but is still siting on the bed.* "Oh Jason...I....I'm glad your ok and alive. Wow....I...I guess god does hear us when we pray. Oh Jason...I just...I dont know what to say...I...wow. I'm sorry I wasent there to protect you and you had to go through this." *Katie grins alittle.* " Dont be to mad at Con but....you have a great voice."

*Rosetta raises an eye brow. Has her neice gown crazy.* "I guess we should check it out and make sure she is ok."

What happened?

Jason’s eyes widen as Katie throws her arms around him. “Ooh, Katie, Katie…” He gives her back a pat, but winces, a weak chuckle escaping. “Ribs…sore ribs, girl. You trying to kill me or what?” he teases.

Mick quirks an eyebrow at Rosetta. Katie’s shriek sounded…happy?

Cindy lifts her head from Wes, confused. “What…what happened?”

Joy

*For a moment Katie is stuned as she looks deep into Jason's eyes, than a small smile froms on her face.* "Ya well you dont look so hot yourself." *As if reality finally hits her Katie lets out a loud shreek and throws her arms around Jason. New tears come forth. Tears of Joy.* "J...Oh J...I thought I lost you, you big jerk."

*Rosetta's ears perk up as she hears Katies shreek. She is on her feet within moment, and looks to Mick, Austin, and Wes.*

I don't know

Jason’s eyes hurt to have them open, but he looks at Katie with a weary humor. “I don’t know…are you?” He lets his gaze rest on Katie’s reddened eyes. “You look terrible.”

Austin frowns as he lifts his head to look towards Jason’s room. A strange feeling has come over him. Something is different…something has changed.

Dreaming?

*Katie sniff, to keep from drooling on Jason.* "I know J, but it hurts so much. I shouldent have left you at the mall. I should of been consintrating better." *Suddanly as if someone put a hot flame under Katies cheek she snaps her her up. Through blurry eyes she pears at Jason. Slowly she reaches out her hand as if scaired to touch his face she might wake from this dream.* "J...Jason? How....am I dreaming?"

The battle is over

Mick intertwines his arm with Rosetta’s, pulling her close within the silence of the lobby. The atmosphere is so sad…so heavy. Jason has not been known within their group long, but already he was a part of it, and now they are losing one of their own.

Cindy falls into Wes’ arms, crying on his shoulder. Her body shakes with her silent sobs as her heart breaks in two. She stands with him unable to speak, unable to bear seeing her son die. She wants to be strong…she wants to know the realization that moving on is necessary…oh, but the pain…it’s almost too much to bear.
She clings to Wes for comfort, finding him as a shelter in the storm.

Prayers rise heavenward in a persistent stream to the Father, begging for time, but honoring His will. If only….if only.

Jason’s chest gently rises and falls under Katie’s head. The room is quiet and still with no whirring and no beeping of monitors. Rain pelts against the window in a steady pace, thunder softly rolling in the distance as if mourning a new loss. The minutes seem like hours, the waiting like a heavy burden of torment…

…But Heavenward requests do not go unheard…

…A warm, rough hand meets Katie’s wet cheek to brush away her tears. Hoarse and low, a mild voice whispers, “I thought I told you not to say goodbye.”

GoodBye

*Katie stairs down at Jason's lifeless body. Katies tears roll down her face. Looking around the empty room Katie see she is the only one left with Jason. Slowly she walks over to his bed.* " I wont let you alone, I dont want you alone in your last min." *Slowly Katie climbs next to Jason on the bed.* " I guess J....in your last moments I want to tell you something I dident before cuz I was scaired. You were my best friend J, and I felt closer to you than anyone. I guess somewhere inside of me, I hoped we would maybe become more. Though I new we both wernt ready for it, the hope was still there. I new if we stayed only friends I woulde still be very happy with that. ut we all have our dreams. I wont for get you J. You will be with me forever." *Katie gives Jason a kiss on the cheek and than puts her arms around him and lays next to him. Softly she sings.* " In my heart you will always be, You were the one who set me free. How could I forget, you wernt just another kid. You touched my life, and gave me love, You were a god sent from up above. I wont forget you, forever you will be with me..." *Katies voice drifts off as once again her tears take over.*

*Rosetta stays with Cindy knowing Katie will want to be alone. How her heart acked. Looking around for Mick she finaly find him. Walking over she sits down and puts an arm around him. No words need to be spoken*

*Wes goes over to Cindy and wraps his arms around her. I silent tear rolls down his face.*

*Wendy rolls over to Clint and slips her hand into him.*

It's for him

Clint sits at his computer, his mind everywhere but on his task. He glances over to Wendy, wondering at her sorrow. He felt bad for Jason and his family…no one deserved to be going through this. But he’d disliked Jason from the beginning, and he found it hard to feel the same kind of sorrow as the others. Yet there is a feeling of remorse…a longing that things had been different.

Mick watches Rosetta leave the small group, a pain settling in his heart. It could be any of them there in that bed. It could have been anyone that the Agency had targeted. What if it had been himself? Wes? Rosetta? Mick sinks down into an overstuffed lobby chair, the facts of life and death weighing heavily on his mind. If that had been him instead of Jason, would he be at peace? Had he lived life to the fullest? Would he be able to look back without regrets for things he should have done?

Austin finally finds a place to sit on a window sill, the rain pouring down outside to his back. Con joins him, though remains quiet, respecting the need for silence. Austin shakes his head though, unable to keep his thoughts inside. “I failed, Con.”

“There’s nothing we could have done…you know that.”

“No…that’s not what I mean.” Austin’s shoulders droop, his eyes glued to the floor as misery hangs over him. “I knew what Jason needed most, but I just let him go down the wrong path. He’s a good kid…he’s got a good heart, and he’s on the right side of the law, but…. When he shrugged off my talk about God, I just let it go. I didn’t want to push him…I was afraid I’d turn him away, or that he would get upset with me and walk away.” He scoffs at himself. “And now my grandson is lying in there ready to die without ever having known the salvation of Christ. And that….that is something that I will carry with me the rest of my life.”

Cindy’s focus snaps to Katie, her own tears flowing freely. “I’m sorry, Katie,” she manages. “Please don’t think I’m just doing this with a flippant attitude. I’m not giving up on him – I’m facing the facts.” Her voice raises slightly as her emotions overflow in a reaction. “The poison won’t stop! It’s just going to continue to kill him! Don’t you see? He didn’t want to lie in a hospital bed, barely alive and useless – I’m doing this for him!”

Austin looks up at the sound of Cindy’s voice, and quickly moves to the room with concern. Entering and seeing the looks on the two women’s faces, he knows what the discussion is about. He goes to Cindy, gently drawing her up out of her chair. “It’s okay…it’s alright. Come here.”

Cindy clings to him, her sobs breaking forth all over again as she’s escorted from the room.

It’s soon that JT comes to the small group again to inform them that it will be soon. A gathering of just a few come together in Jason’s room as the nurses begin to take the machines off of him. In their own ways, they say goodbye, most speaking no words. Cindy is able to linger only a few moments before breaking down completely and being ushered out with Austin, unable to handle the end. Con is one of the last, looking down on Jason’s peaceful form for several moments…no more tubes, no more wires…just resting as he should. Con glances at Katie, and gives her shoulder a gentle squeeze before leaving as well, seeming to sense that it’s okay to leave her alone. The others have said their goodbyes…Jason’s last minutes will take care of themselves.

NO!

*Anger rages inside Katie as she hears Cindys words.* "NO...THERE IS STILL HOPE. YOU CANT DO THIS. YOU CANT...YOU CANT TAKE HIM AWAY. HOW...HOW COULD YOU EVEN THINK OF THAT. HOW CAN YOU GIVE UP ON HIM!!!!!" *Tears flow from Katies eyes as her face turn purple than red as she gasps for air.*

*Rosetta hears Katie inside the room. Seeing her neice in so much pain and not being able to do anything kills her. Rosetta looks to Mick, her own tears now pouring from her eyes. Turning she heads down the hell and stairs out the window as the sky turns black and thunder is hurd in the distince.*

*Damien's heart acks as he hears Katies pleas and crys. How could the Agency be so crule to hurt these inocent people. The Agency had to be taken down. These people deserved to live the rest of there life in peace.*

*Softly Wendy crys as the news of Jason gets to them. How sad this day was.*

*The ranch is heavy and quiet as the rain starts to fall outside. Many continue to pray for those they know are hurting. They also pray for Jason that he has found peace with God."

The Decision

Cindy returns Rosetta's hug, though the warmth seems to have dispersed. She glances around at the others, then bravely goes to Jason's room. Entering, fresh tears fill her eyes. There are so many tubes and wires...he looks so helpless. Not bothered by Katie's presence, she moves to the other side of the bed, lowering herself into a chair. "Oh, Jason," she whispers. "My boy...what have they done?" She reaches out to brush some hair from his forehead, forcing a smile through the tears. "It's not supposed to be this way..."

Mick shakes his head at Wes. "Everything is about the same now. It's poison that's doing this to Jason...the doctor doesn't know how much time he's got now... It's not looking good."

Even though those at the ranch disperse, prayers are still on the minds of many. Sparky makes a phone call to his home church to start a prayer chain there, and he remains awake through the night, in constant conversation with God.

The night becomes morning, and the new day drags on - a persistent droning of time. Hearts grow heavier as shock wears off, and lack of sleep becomes something non-important. Those at the hospital simply wait...no one wanting to discuss the future, but all wondering in their minds.

The day at the ranch is a quiet one. Functions are lethargic as they receive periodical updates from the hospital, which never bring good news. Research resumes, but at a slow pace, spirits dampened by this new chain of events.

Evening falls, and darkness descends like a cold blanket. It doesn't seem like a day has passed. Cindy is back by Jason's side, in quiet contemplation, her tears having stopped as reality has set in. A knock at the door makes her look up, and she sees JT. "Yes, Doctor?"

JT comes in, glancing at Katie and Cindy. He takes an extra chair to sit down next to Cindy, and speaks gently. "Austin said that you would be making the final decisions."

"Yes." Cindy nods. Her eyes are tired and bloodshot, and her heart gropes for strength. "A couple years ago...Jason...he was on a case and was in a mild accident. He didn't get hurt, but we started talking about what would happen if he ever did. And...his wish was that if he ever needed life support, that I would let him go." Her lower lip trembles, her voice beginning to quiver. She doesn't dare look in Katie's direction. "He...he felt very strongly that if a machine was needed to keep him alive, then it was his time to go."

JT reaches over to take Cindy's hand. This job was never easy. "Are you saying that you want to take him off support?"

Cindy swallows hard, but nods. "It's what he wanted. And...as you've pointed out, it will just get worse. It's a miracle he's lasted this long without any more trouble, and I don't want him to suffer any more. I was blessed with the opportunity to see him one last time, so..." A silent tear trickles down her face. "It's time."

JT looks at her with compassion. "Okay. In the next half hour, I'll have the breathing machine disconnected, and the IVs and monitors unhooked. Just so you know, when that happens, Jason will probably breathe on his own for a few minutes, then go very peacefully. He won't be in any pain." He searches her eyes one more time. "You're sure?"

"Yes." Cindy takes in a shaky breath. "He wouldn't want it dragged out, nor would he want his family to suffer longer than necessary."

"Alright." JT stands up, wishing he would have some small word of wisdom or comfort, but nothing seems adequate for a time like this. "I will go inform the nurses. And I will tell the others from your friends and family if you want."

Cindy nods gratefully. "Thank you." She watches JT leave, then reaches out to cradle Jason's battered face with her hand.

JT delicately informs the others what is happening, and spirits drop even lower. Austin retreats from the group, hiding his emotions, while Con goes into Jason's room to try and offer some comfort, despite his own tears behind his eyes.
Mick looks at Rosetta with helplessness, an anger buried beneath the confusion, for what the Agency has done. No one deserved to go through this.

praying

*Katie keeps her head on Jason's chest listing to the song. Leting his soft voice fill her. Katie looks at Jason as he lays with his eyes closed.* " I wont give up on you. I wont say goodbye. I'm here for you J." *Katie wants to say so much more, but words need not be spoken. Her pressence there says it all. Bowing her head Katie says her own prayer.* "God I know its not often you hear from me. But please lord, Make Jason better If not for me, for his family. Jason is to young to have his life cut short. Please make him better.*

*Rosetta goes over to Cindy and give her a hug.*

*Wes nods to Mick.* "Anything new?"

*Wendy bows her head waiting for everyone to finish than she says her own prayer.* " Dear lord. Please keep Jason in you arms. Wrap your blanket around him, please heal him. Please keep him mom, Granfather, and friend comfort in this time of need. IN Jesus name Amen"

*Angel nods as her daughter says her prayer.* "Yes lord. Keep him safe." *Angel's own tears fall.*

~*~Somewhere Alse~*~

*A dark figure makes its way up the steps. Opening a door they look into the room.*

*A small voice from one of the courners crys.* "What do you want with me? Why are you doing this?"

*The darkfigure lets out a cackling laugh.* "This was destined from the day you were born. Be good and maybe tomarrow you can go out and play."

*The small voice sobs.* " I dont like it here."

*The darkfigure closes the door, leaving eveything dark.*

Waiting

Austin turns his back on the small group, setting his hands on his hips and taking a deep breath. The tears are waiting, but there’s still too much shock, confusion and anger to let them through.

Mick looks at the others, desperate to know something to say, but no words come. He grits his teeth, and stands up to go to Austin, giving his back a pat. “It’s not over yet.”

“No….” Austin shakes his head. “But it’s heck getting there.”

Con watches Katie leave, and it’s as long while that she still hasn’t come back. He thinks for a moment, then excuses himself, and comes back a few minutes later. He quietly enters Jason’s room, his heart aching at the sight. In a moment of compassion, he goes to Katie, laying a big gentle hand on her shoulder. “Hey…” He lowers himself down in a chair next to her, not expecting a response, but talking anyway. “It’s going to be okay…” He fingers something that he brought in from the truck. It’s an unmarked CD in a tattered envelope. “You know…not a lot of people have seen or heard Jason’s musical talents, but there was one time I convinced him to let me record him singing and playing his guitar…” He spies a CD player in the corner and goes to it, beginning to put the disc in it. “I bet he’s told you about Sydney… well…when she was in such bad shape over in London, there was one point that her family back home didn’t know that she was still alive. But a handful of us at TJY did, even though we had to remain silent for a while.” He closes the lid on the CD player as he continues to speak gently. “It hit Jason pretty hard…seeing Sydney’s family preparing themselves to never see her again, when at the same time, she was waiting to get home to them. Jason sat down and wrote this song one afternoon…he didn’t want anyone else to ever hear it, but…I think…” He presses ‘play.’ “…I think if he were awake, he might say these words to you…” He quietly leaves the room, allowing the music to play to Katie alone.

The soft, minor notes of a guitar lift the atmosphere into a dreamy state and Jason’s voice blends in a soothing tone…the song itself driven by an emotional charge.

Sometimes the wrong things happen,
And we’re not sure what to do.
Life is slipping slowly by,
I see it passing through.

Your tears they fall like raindrops,
On a summer afternoon.
But do me just one favor,
Please grant my one request…

Don’t say goodbye…
Tomorrow’s not the end of it.

Don’t say goodbye…
Don’t make me stay away.

Don’t say goodbye,
Darlin’ please….

…‘Cause I’m coming home.

I’ve fallen down a darkened road,
It’s a mystery I feel.
Choices were spread out before me,
Now time can only heal.

You’re missing all we used to do,
You’re crying for me now.
But do me just one favor.
Please grant my one request…

Don’t say goodbye…
Tomorrow’s not the end of it.

Don’t say goodbye…
Don’t make me stay away.

Don’t say goodbye,
Darlin’ please….

…‘Cause I’m coming home.

Oh the storms around me rage,
And the pain, it cuts me deep.
I don’t want to stay alone down here,
I don’t want to lose it all.
Don’t make me stay alone down here,
Don’t take it all away…

Don’t say goodbye…
Tomorrow’s not the end of it.

Don’t say goodbye…
Don’t make me stay away.

Don’t say goodbye,
Darlin’ please….

…‘Cause I’m coming home.
Oh I’m coming home…
Darlin’ I’m coming home…
Yeah yeah…

…I’m coming home.

Cindy numbly follows Wes, unsure exactly what’s going on, but too afraid to ask too many questions.
The ride takes several hours, and by the time they arrive, Cindy has withdrawn into a quiet state.
They join the others in the lobby, and Cindy immediately falls into an embrace by Austin.
Austin holds her for several minutes, neither saying anything.
Mick looks to Wes and nods. “Thanks for bringing her.”

Back at the ranch, Sparky gathers together those who are still in the mess hall. "Hey, y'all...Wes didn't say much before he left, but I think it's safe to assume that all is not well. And I also assume that it has to do with Jason. I think it would be a good idea for us all to have a prayer for him...lift him up to our Father and leave it in His hands..." He starts off the prayers, and one by one, the others take turns.

Not goodbye

*A tear rolls down Rosetta cheek as she goes over to Katie to give her a hug. Katie pushs Rosetta's arms away. A look that can not compare to any other. Looking around the room Katie makes her way into Jason's room. Making her way to the bed she sits down. Katie takes Jasons hand in hers. Jason cant give up, He's made it this far. He had to keep going. As she holds his hand for comfort and to let him know she is there her eyes starts to go blurry as the tears start to fall. Memories of Jason flow through her mind.*

{A soft song starts in the background: so lately been wondering who will be there to take my place when im gone you'll need love to light the shadows on your face. if a great wave shall fall it would fall upon us all then between the sand and stone could you make it on your own. if i could then i would ill go wherever you will go way up high or down low ill go wherever you will go. and maybe I'll find out the way to make it back someday to watch you to guide you through the darkest of your day. run away with my heart run away with my hope run away with my love. know now just quite how my life and love might still go on in your heart in your mind i'll stay with you for all of time. if i could turn back time.}

*Memories of Jason flow freely through her mind as she talks aloud to him.* " I remember J, when you first saw me shoot. You were so saprised that I could with a bum arm. And when I first met you. From that first day I felt a connection with you. You smiles, your eyes. And your Roses. I'll keep they forever. Its the first time I ever got flowers." *Katie continues to talk to Jason about almost everything. Finally not being able to take it anymore Katie throws her arms around Jason the best she can as he is laying there and just crys with her head on his chest.*

*Rosetta shakes her head. It breaks her heart to see her loved ones hearts breaking.* "Austin, I'm so sorry."

*Wes answers his phone.* "Ok...I understand. We will be there shortly." *Wes hangs up the phone and grabs his coat.* "Cindy...Hun? Come on we are going to go to the hospetal." *Wes walks over and helps Cindy stand. Grabing her coat he helps her put it on. Wes looks to Sparky.* "I'll call you in a bit." *Wes and Cindy get in the car and make there way to the hospetal finally arriving.*

Chaos

Once the guy is taken away, Austin looks at Con, angry with himself. "How did we let him in here?"

Con shakes his head. "I don't know, I'm sorry." He glances over to where Katie is. "But we have her to thank for saving Jason's life."

Austin makes a couple steps to Katie, and lays a hand on her shoulder for a moment. "We owe ya, Katie..." He sighs deeply and retreats to sit outside the room again, and almost runs into Rosetta. "Oh, hey. We just had a bit of excitement here. You can ask Katie about it."

This time he chooses a chair where the door is in a constant line of sight, and flops down, joined by Mick.

"How is he?"

"The same." Austin looks down at his hands, not used to being in this position. "I don't know what to do."

Mick shakes his head. "There's nothing we can do but wait."

...And they do wait. JT reminds them that the time frame is unknown, but they remain.

Sparky listens with intrigue to Annie. "I guess I didn't realize you did all this."

The evening drags on, and no more news is heard from Austin. Nerves are tense, but exhaustion is beginning to hit everyone. Finally, some relent and go to bed, while others stay in the mess hall, dozing uncomfortably in chairs. Cindy remains awake but quiet.

Two a.m.

Several monitors in Jason's room suddenly start to beep, sending a high-pitched wail down the hall. In almost an instant, a handful of nurses are in the room, clamoring around Jason's bed, and all but ignoring Katie's presence, gently moving her out of the way.

Austin is on his feet, worry hitting him like a smack to the face. "What's going on? What's wrong?"

JT rushes past, not taking time to answer him.

The next few minutes are confused and blurred by the commotion and early hour, and Jason is taken from his room and rushed down the hall to ICU. Everyone stands numbly, unsure what just happened, and they follow after JT. For several more minutes, they're not allowed into the new room, and it's obvious by the tone of voices coming from inside that something is wrong. Austin is about ready to yell at one of the nurses, when JT finally appears again, and makes everyone sit down in the lobby. The look on his face says more than his words, and fear grips the atmosphere.

JT purses his lips grimly. "Jason has stopped breathing on his own." He pauses, shaking his head. "He's stable for the moment - we have him on a breathing machine."

Austin's jaw drops. "But...you said he was stable before... what happened?"

"I don't know." JT sits on the armrest of the small lobby couch, obviously worn out. "I don't know, Austin." He rubs a hand over his face. "It just isn't making sense. All his charts checked out fine...his scans check out fine...I couldn't have missed something, and yet apparently I did." He glances at all the faces, catching Rosetta's eye with a look of apology that he has not yet had time to talk with her, and not even knowing if she recognizes him.

All at once, a nurse appears with a clipboard and chart, frantically showing it to JT. His eyes widen in shock. "No..."

Austin leans forward. "What?" he asks sternly. "What is it?"

JT's face pales, and he reads his papers again, wishing they said something else. He looks up at everyone again, hating this part of his job. "This is the report on Jason's blood work. Apparently there is a foreign agent in his bloodstream that is attacking him, and at a rapid and deadly pace."

Con sucks in his breath. "He's been poisoned."

JT nods solemnly. "Apparently so."

"God, please no..." Austin closes his eyes for a moment. "What can you do?"

"At this stage?" JT wishes he had better news. "We're not even sure what kind of poison we're dealing with, but it's shutting him down the same as someone could walk down this hall and hit the light switches as they go."

"Are you saying that he's dying?"

JT tightens his jaw, unwilling to say yes. "I'm saying that there is a good chance that Jason will not pull through this. There's always room for something to turn around, and in a world like mine, miracles do happen. But strictly medically speaking...I won't lie to you. There's nothing more we can do for him, but continue to support his body as it fails, so he's comfortable."

The stunned silence is overwhelming.

"Why?" Con asks aloud. "Why would they do this to him?"

"To show us they mean business," Austin scoffs. "They didn't get what they wanted, and they weren't going to let him stick around long enough to rat on them." He stands up angrily, taking his cell phone with dread. "I'll be back." He walks a short ways down the hall, dialing Wes again. "Wes...it's Austin. Bring Cindy...we're not sure how much time Jason's got."

JT looks at the others, his eyes falling to Katie. "You can see him if you like," he says gently.

Words

*Annie thinks for a moment.* "Depending on where I go sometimes its by myself and some times there is more than one. I like doing it...and I get to travil so its cool. Ya get to meet some intresting people too."

*Katie nods to Con.* "Ya I'm ok." *Katie waits to lower her gun till she knows Austin has the guy good. After the police come and take him away Katie falls back into the chair.* "You have to stay stong Jason for all of us. What did they do to you. Why?" *Katie lets out a long sigh and looks up at Austin. Worry, sadness corses her face.* " He's gonna be ok." *She looks back as Jason.* " He has to be." *Katie dident know how to feel at the moment. All her emotions were bundled into why. Why...why was this happening."

*Rosetta finally sees the room they need. Softly she knows on the door.*

Well done, Katie

Cindy buries her face against Wes' chest, no words adequate to express how she feels. A constant prayer is on her mind, but the worry still grips her heart.

Jade sits quietly by herself, overhearing Wes. She sinks lower in her chair, unsure how to feel. She'd only known Jason a couple days, but he had seemed so nice. She liked him. How could something like this happen? Why would God allow it to happen?

Sparky's eyes light up as he looks at Annie's material. "This is great...I've often thought about getting on the mission field myself. Do you have a team you go with each time?"

The ride to the hospital is quiet, and once they arrive, Mick takes the lead, asking a nurse where they can find everyone.

The intruder's eyebrows shoot up, taken completely off guard by this young lady's stance, and her gun. He hadn't been told about her. All he'd been told were about the two guys in the hall. His own aim wavers. He might have been sent here to do a job, but he wasn't going to risk his own neck for it. He drops his gun, letting it slide on the floor and raises his hands slightly.

Austin looks towards the room as he hears Katie's voice. "What the..." He's on his feet to check in an instant and his eyes widen at the scene. "What on earth is going on here?" Anger courses through his veins as he picks up the intruder's gun, and automatically pins the guy's arms behind his back. "Who are you??!"

Con enters next and looks back and forth between Katie and the man, his face paling as he realizes that neither he or Austin knew someone was there. "Katie...are you okay?"

The man sneers at them. "Ha! You think I'm gonna tell you? I'll see a lawyer first, thank you very much."

Austin slams him face-first up against the wall. "Who were you going to shoot? All of us? Or just a helpless kid?!"

"It doesn't matter," the intruder laughs sadistically. "I was gonna finish him off to get the thing over with. Wouldn't want him to talk before he left the land of the living. Mark my words - he's a gonner and there's nothing anyone can do about it. We finished him off hours ago."

By now, several nurses are present, and JT has rejoined them, bewildered, and having someone call the poilce to take the man away.

Stranger

*Annie pushes the papers closer to Sparky.* " This is the materal I use to teach. Than this stuff here is just info on the next 2 places I could be going. Since I dont know I guess I should just read up on both."

*Wes offers his arms to Cindy, and just holds her leting her cry. Not sure that anything he says can make matters better.*

*Rosetta just looks at Mick.* "Oh no." *Rosetta goes silent as she likes about her niece and how she must be taking it.*

*Damien shakes his head.* " I dont know him very well but he seemed like a good kid. Thats to bad."

*As Katie sits with Jason she feels a strange presance. Someone is coming in the room slowly almost like they are sneeking. She knows it couldent be Con, or Austin. Katies heart starts to race as the figure draws closer. Slowly Katie reachs her hand into her inside jacket. Katie plays out in her mind what could happen. She isent at the right angel to shoot anyone at the moment. Let alone know if its friend or fo. Katie stands and turns around holding her gun in front of her.* "Who are you? and what do you want?"

Intruder

Becky chuckles. "Well, I'm glad Clint inherited at least a few good manners." She winks at Wendy.

Cindy just stares at Wes for the longest time, not even able to comprehend what he's just said. "A...a coma?" She looks down, the tears starting to form all over again. "I can't believe this is happening. I just....how...why..."

Sparky raises his eyebrows. "Don't know where you're going, huh? That sounds exciting. Whatcha got here?" He points to her papers.

Mick gets on his phone and calls Austin. "Hey, it's Mick. Yeah...how's Jason? Mm...." He shakes his head and sighs. "Alright. Well, we're on our way in. We lost the van. I don't know how - it was my fault. But I don't want to be wandering strange streets at night and get cornered somewhere. So we'll be up a the hospital soon and we can decide where to go from there." He ends the call and looks at Rosetta and Damien with worry. "Jason's in a coma."

Austin hangs up his phone, and looks back at Katie. He offers her a small smile and nods with understanding. "Yeah, sure, you can stay in here. I'm sure he appreciates it." He turns and wearily walks out of the room to rejoin Con.

Footsteps come slowly down the hall, pausing to greet nurses cordially, arousing no suspicion. Austin and Con are a safe distance from the door....it will be easy. His hand slides into his jacket, fingering the pistol grip. The silencer will alert no one.
He comes upon the open door. No one is paying any attention. The girl has her back to the door. He will be gone before she even turns around. He pulls out his weapon and stretches it out, aiming at the sleeping figure in the bed...

New

*Wendy smiles at Becky.* "Thank you. I know where Clint gets his kindness now."

*Wes hangs up the phone and enters the mess hall again. His heart is heavy. How can he tell Cindy about her son. She was suffering as it was. But how could he not. If anything happend to Jason and he hasent told her, he would feel horrable. Wes goes over to Cindy and sits down.* "Cindy...I need to talk to you. That was Con on the phone. I was continblating not telling you. But I have too." *Wes takes Cindy's hand in her.* "Cindy, Jason is in a Coma. I know it sounds like a horrable thing but his body is trying to heal itself so maybe thats they best way. Con said if the condition dosent change we can go an see him in a dew days. God has a plane for everything Cindy. Remember that and let it give you comfort." *Wes trys to smile the best he can.*

*Annie sits down next to Sparky. Looking at him she can tell he is questioning his Sisters project. Seting her papers down she holds up sme panflips.* " Next month the mission wants me to leave again on a trip but they havent told me where. How on earth am I to prepair if they wont tell me where I am going." *Annie smiles.*

*Rosetta lets out a sigh.* "Lets call Austin and see what he wants us to do than high tail it out of here before they are watching US."

*Katie waks and streches. Looking at Austin her eyes are bloodshot its easy to tell she has been crying.* "Aucilly this chair is pritty comfey, I'd rather stay here for now. If thats ok."

Just have to wait

Becky grins and helps Wendy prepare the meal. "Sitting around all day, no one feels hungry, but as soon as you can smell it, tummies start to complain." She helps get everything together and sets out some bowls for anyone who wants to come in the kitchen and get some.

Cindy continues to sit by the fire, her eyes dry, but her face pale and downcast. Her mind is recalling so many things...so many emotions are running wild... what will happen? Will her son be okay? What if he's not? What would she do?

Sparky sits quietly at one of the tables, weary from research, and giving his eyes a break. He looks up as Annie comes back, and wonders at the papers she holds.

Mick gives Rosetta a sidelong glance, unable to help a slight enjoyment of being back in action. The light turns green and he continues to tail the van. After several turns though, the taillights suddenly disappear. Mick slows down, his eyes wide. "What? Where did they go? They were just in front of us!" He glances down several side streets, turns around, circles back and starts again, but there's no sign of the van. Stopping, he hits the steering wheel in frustration. "How could I have lost them? They had to have realized what was up and turned their lights off or something." The traffic in town proves that trying to find the van in the dark would be useless.

Nurses come in and out of Jason's room, JT comes once, and Austin and Con check in on him and Katie. Finally a couple hours later, Austin gently rouses Katie. "Hey...there's a couch out here in the lobby right by the room. Why don't you get some more comfortable rest?"

Con stands out in the hall and paces as he dials Wes' phone. "Hey...it's Con. Austin wanted me to call with an update. Jason's doing alright...he's stable, but....he's in a coma. The doctor isn't sure what it all means, and he can't predict how long it will last, so...if nothing has changed in a day or two, we'll allow anyone who wants to see him to come down. Otherwise, we're just going to have to wait."

Outside the hospital, in the shadows of the parking lot, a stealthy figure makes his way along the wall. A gun is tucked beneath his jacket, with intentions only he knows. Entering the hospital, he casually asks about a name then goes to the elevator, heading for room three-thirteen.

Meal

*Rosetta watches the van intently.* "They are eather on to us, or in no hurry to get back to who ever told they to take Jason and let them know he is gone." *Rosetta eyes the red light that seems to be taking for ever to change. Rosetta takes her gun from its holester and puts it along side of her by the door. She looks to Mick again.* "Old habbits die hard eh."

*Damien keeps a close eye on all the window, making sure no one sneeks up. His eyes pearcing through the dark.*

*Katie rests her head on Jason's hand as her tears start to flow making his hand and the blankets around him wet. The lack of sleep is wairing on Katies emotions as her best friend is laying in a coma. Katie mind is quiet, an errir stillness inside of her. As Jason rests she cant feel him anymore. Katie feels empty like a peace of her is missing. Finally Katie gives in and shuts her eyes. With in minutes she sleeping.*

*Annie heads to her bunk and grabs some papers. and than once again make her way back to the mess hall. A strange grin on her face.*

*Wendy smiles at Becky.* "Thank you. Well I thought maybe we could make up some eggs, and cut up some ham, maybe some fresh veggies." *Wendy tummy grumbles.* " I dident think I was that hungry."

Asleep

JT waits until Katie is gone before looking back to Austin and Con.

Austin eyes him skeptically. “There’s something you haven’t said.”

“No…” JT shakes his head.

“But you’re not quite as confident as what you said.”

JT shrugs. “I guess not, but if anyone needs to stay positive, it’s Katie. I find it hard to be confident about anything that can’t be explained, and things like this just can’t be predicted or understood completely.” He studies Austin closely for several moments. “The last eighteen years have been hard on you.”

Austin leans back in his chair, now even more skeptical. “Who are you, Doctor? Why are you helping us? I saw you avoiding security and law checks so we wouldn’t have any hassles. What gives?”

JT gives a slight smile. “A long time ago I saw your gang in turmoil, then they vanished into thin air. My guess is that something has cropped up again, bringing a lot of you back together again…”

Monitors beep quietly in the dim room. Jason lies peacefully still, his eyes closed in quiet sleep. Bandages line his arms, and stitches are visible along his face. Though bruises have become more prominent, the swelling has gone down, making his face look even thinner. His breathing is rhythmic and calm, his rough hand enveloping Katie’s as she holds it.

Mick follows the van as it winds around town, making stops at a quick mart and gas station. He sighs as they wait for a red light. “These guys don’t even seem like they’re in a hurry anymore. Do you think they’re on to us?”

Becky chuckles and leans down to help Wendy. “Be patient – you’ll be out of that chair in no time.” She helps to start making preparations. “I think a salad is a splendid idea. What do you have in mind?”

The Call

*Katie nods at JT than stands up.* "I'm going to go in and see him. If you guys need me let me know." *Katie heads our the door and down the hall.*

*Rosetta nods to Mick.* "Lets do it." *Rosetta feels a bit of excitment as hey younger day pass through her mind.*

*Wendy looks to Becky as she sits by the firg.* "I was thinking make a nice big Salad. I am sure the dont have much of an appitite so it will be something lite for them." *Wendy lets out a sigh as she trys to take the stuff out of the fig but drops it.* " OH come on...I'm so usless right now. I cant wait to get out of this thing." *Wendy bends forwork to pick up what she droped.*

*Annie heads outside and pulls out her phone dialing a number.* "Hey, Ya they did. I'm not sure. They dident say where. Nope they dont know. Ya alot easyer than I thought. Ok....when I know more I'll let you know. Later."

*Katie slowly enters Jason's room. Seeing him laying in the bed brings a tear to her eyes. Pulling a chair over to him she sits down.* "I'm here Jason. I'm here for you." *Katie slips her hand into his, maybe in his dreams he would feel her presence and know she was there for him.* "Fight this Jason and come back to us. We need you, You mom, your grandfather, your friends." *Katie keeps holding Jason's hand as she watchs him sleep.*

Details

Cindy searches Wes’ eyes for reassurance, even though her instincts are telling her that all is not right. “I’m scared, Wes…”

JT moves to sit closer to Katie, his voice steady and gentle. “It happens sometimes, Katie, and it can’t always be medically explained. While Jason was on the table, he had a couple reactions to the meds, but nothing uncontrollable. Basically the anesthetic should have worn off by now, but he hasn’t woken up. It’s my opinion that his body simply shut down in order to heal itself from the inside out – it’s happened before…it can be a body’s defense mechanism. The tricky part is waiting…he’s in stable condition, and the monitors show healthy brain activity, so I’m not real worried at this point. We just don’t know if it’s going to be a few hours, or a few weeks.” He smiles encouragingly. “But he’s young and strong, Katie. I have full confidence he’ll pull through…we just have to be patient with him.” He gestures to the door. “I had him moved to his own room, number three-thirteen. It would be fine if you want to see him.”

Mick straightens in his seat as he sees the headlights in the evening light. “Hey, yeah….”

“I can’t believe you did that!” One thug argues.

The other rolls his eyes. “I didn’t think we’d get pulled in for not using the parking meter! How was I supposed to know?”

“Yeah, well our little jaunt for lunch turned into an all-day excursion. You just better hope that kid we got in here is still there.”

“Ha! Where was he going to go and how was he supposed to get here?” The crook shakes his head. “You worry for….” His voice trails off as he looks at the broken lock on the door. “Hey…this looks like it’s been kicked in.”

“What?” His partner takes a closer look, drawing his gun. “Let’s check it out.”

Mick watches intently, waiting for more movement. It isn’t long before the two figures appear again, in an obvious hurry. They jump into their van and burn rubber as they back out onto the road and speed away. Mick turns on the ignition and keeps his lights off. “Alright, guys. We’re on. Let’s see where these idiots go.”

Sparky nods his agreement and grabs his phone. “I’ll call Adam…”

Becky comes in from the living room and joins Wendy in the kitchen. “Hey, hun, find anything good we can fix up for this hungry mob?”

Stuned

*Wes looks at Cindy and put his other hand on hers.* "He's at the hospetal Cindy. Other than that Austin dident say. Austin said he will call me back in a while. We just need to wait now. At lease we know he is safe now." *Wes trys to give a smile to Cindy though he know from Austins ton it was pretty bad.*

*Katie gets a look of fear that pass over her eyes. No not again, please not again.* "How....how he was talking before you put him under? What happend? I dont understand. How could his condition change so fast? Is he going to be ok?" *A tear forms in Katies eyes, she can feel best friend sliping away.* "Can I see him?"

*After a long moment of silence Damien looks out the window.* "Hey guys, they are back?" *He points to the van pulling back up to the wairhouse.*

~*~As night falls on the ranch everyone is joined in the Mess hall still. Some chating quietly some doing more research. While others just sit and think about all the is going on. Everything is quiet outside for now but the night air is thick. A heavy gloom hanging over everyones head as there friends have yet to return.~*~

*Angel look up from the paper work she was working on to keep her mind off everything.*" We should probley get in contact with Adam and let him know they found Jason, and make sure everything over there is ok. We havent hurd from him since he left."

*Wendy pushes herself away from the table.* " If I sit here any longer I am going to go crazy." *Starting to push herself twords the kitchen Wendy announces.* "I'm going to start some dinner dince non of us have had anything to eat yet. I dont know what I will make but I'll find something."

*Annie stands and streches.* "I'm going to go to my bunk fast and get some stuff to work on while we are in here. I'll be back shortly."

Diagnosis

Jason grips her hand tightly, showing his fear for the first time. He can barely see what’s going on, and that combined with his mental state, creates a panic he resists, but can’t seem to overcome. On a certain level, he knows the people around him are trying to help, and he’s desperate to accept their help, but the pain keeps him at a point of ire.

JT prepares an injection and gives Jason a quick shot. “This should calm him down a bit and give him some relief until we put him under.” He raises an eyebrow as Katie requests the presence of the others. “Ah, grandfather huh? I wondered if there was a relation there. Yes, they can come too, as long as you keep them in line.” He grins at her. “Come on, follow me. You can come into the next room, and you’ll be able to see into the O.R.” He gets several nurses to push the gurney through the next set of doors, and motions for the others to follow. He preps himself and as he’s entering the O.R., he’s stopped by another doctor.

“I went ahead and drew up the papers for the report, since this was a beating.” The doctor shows JT several printouts.

JT shakes his head. “Got it taken care of already.”

“But I didn’t see…”

“It’s taken care of,” JT repeats sternly, turning the other doctor away. He goes into the O.R., letting the door swing shut behind him.

Austin and Con join Katie in the adjoining room where there is a window into the O.R. They wait for hours, pacing, sitting, standing, and pacing. Finally, Jason is taken out another door, and JT emerges, easing himself down into a chair and removing his mask. He sighs wearily and wipes some sweat from his brow. “Well…”

Austin looks at him expectantly. “How is he?”

JT doesn’t answer the question directly. “The worst time I had was reconstructing that knee of his. He had quit an impact to his kneecap – shattered the whole thing. I almost waited to replace it, but I decided to go ahead and do the surgery while I had him in there. Only time will tell how much mobility he’ll gain back in it. And…” He thinks. “That gash on his face is going to leave a nasty mark, but as long as it doesn’t get infected it shouldn’t be a threat. He has five broken ribs, plenty of cuts and bruises and he was pretty dehydrated.”

Con cocks his head. “How long will he have to stay here?”

JT grows solemn as if having something he doesn’t want to say. “Jason apparently experienced an awful lot of trauma, physically and mentally… Right now he’s in a coma.”

Cindy’s eyes widen, and she grips Wes’ arm. “What do you mean he’s in pretty rough shape? What did they say? Where is he?”

New face Old friend.

*Katie shakes JT's hand than goes to Jason taking his other.* "Hey J, I'm here....I'm right here with you." *Katie keeps herself aware of the new doc, and throws a look to Con saying, She dosent know who this is so keep an eye on him. Katie looks back to JT.* "Can Con, and his grandfather be in there to please?"

*Wes nods his head even though Austin cant see him.* " Ok.....I'll let know know.ok...ya things are calm here at the moment. Ok...Wish Jason the best for us. ok...if ya need anything call. OK later." *Wes hangs up the phone and lets out a sigh walking back into the mess hall. Siting down next to Cindy he notices everyone looking at him.* "They found Jason. He is in pritty rough shape but he's live and thats what matters." *Wes smiles to Cindy than looks around the room again.* " We cant go see him just yet. Everything is fresh and new we dont want to draw any attachen. Austin will let us knwo when everything is ok."

Doctor

The doctor nods at Katie while working with Jason. "That's very helpful, thank you."

Jason suddenly groans and tries to sit up. One of the nurses gently restrains him, but Jason retaliates on instinct, grabbing her wrist. The doctor is quick to force him to let go. "Would someone give him that sedative, please?! What's taking so long?" He turns back to Katie, having a hard time staying calm. "Where was he when this happened? What was he doing?"

Another doctor pauses in his route down the adjoining hall. He cocks his head as he sees what's going on, and lifts an eyebrow as he sees Austin approaching the chaos as well. Shutting the folder he has in his hand, he walks quickly into the situation, giving Katie a kind smile, then turning to the first doctor. "You're free to go now, Frank. I'll take this one."

"But I was here when he came in. I've already started getting him prepped for several scans and it looks like he'll need surgery on that leg of his."

The new doctor looks at him sternly. "I said you're free to go." He hands him the folder. "Mrs. Johnson in 409 is waiting for you."

After a brief eye-to-eye stand off, the first doctor relents with a scoff, leaving to stalk down the hall.

The new doctor winks at Katie. He sees Jason fighting with the nurse, and goes quietly to his head, soothing Jason with his voice instead of brawn. "Hey, killer, let her go. We're just helping you out here. Take it easy."

Stuck between panic and reality, Jason can't make out any of the faces around him. "Katie," he manages.

The new doctor grasps Jason's hand firmly. "You're alright. Everyone is alright." He turns to Katie. "I'm assuming he's talking about you." He offers his free hand. "I'm Dr. Jack Timble, Katie. You can call me JT." He lowers his voice slightly, remaining soft and gentle. "You don't have to give any details...I'll make sure you're not hounded by anyone else. And if you're concerned about safety, I'll even let you in the room next to the O.R. so you can see what's going on with your friend here if you want."

Con raises a suspicious eyebrow and glances at Katie, wondering if she knows this doctor.

Austin sighs deeply. "Yeah, Wes. We found Jason. He's in bad shape though. We're at the hospital now and the doctors are looking at him. We pulled off the rescue slicker than snot, though it worries me. Some of the others stayed there to make sure nothing else happened. Listen, be sure Cindy knows we found Jason, but...make sure she knows we're not out of the woods yet. Don't have anyone come up here yet...I don't know how long we'll have to stay, and I don't want to draw any more attention than necessary."

Answers

*Katie holds Jason's hand not wanting to leave his side till she new he was gonna be ok. Keeping her emotions in check was what was important right now. This fight was won but it wasent over yet. There was still a long road ahead.Keeping calm wasent to hard for Katie. As the doc asks her questions she thinks for a long moment. It wasent important she choose what she said wishly, no one could know about what was going on at the Ranch and with the Agency.* "He..He got jumped. They messed him up pritty bad. I think his knee is smashed in, and the cut on his face. On the way here I cleaned a bunch of his wounds." *Katie looks down at Jason. She might not be showing it, but she was nervouse and scaired for Jason.* "Ya he has low bloodsugar, and he gets flashbacks pritty bad from the past. Other than that nothing alse. He eat a little bit or Orange on the way here, I tryed to get his sugar back up, but he couldent keep it down. Your probley going to need to give him an I-V. And the last thing he said was he was tired."

*Rosetta laughs as she watches the building.* "I have to say this part is the part I missed the most. Nothing like spending hours in a car with a close friend. Ah heck miss it all, it was rough and tiring but it made us all come together." *Rosetta counts* " I think we did more than a million stakeours. Usaly you are I were the ones doing it too."

*Damien sits in the back seat and listens to Rosetta and Mick. Not sure what to say. He had been the cause of some of there pain and now he was on the same side. This was strange but a good feeling.*

*Wes sits and chats with the other as his phone rings. Looking down at the number he stands.* "I'll be right back guys." *Wes gets up and leaves the room steping onto the porch.* "Yeah whats up?"

Questions

Austin keeps his eyes on the road, trying not to let his emotions surrounding the situation get the best of him.

Jason squirms slightly, only half aware of really what's going on. "I'm just...tired....I can't..." His voice trails off as his body suddenly relaxes and his pulse rate becomes more rapid.

Finally the hospital comes into view and Austin is quick to find the ER entrance. Con jumps out and comes to Katie's aid, taking Jason, now unconscious, and doing his best to get him inside. Once the doors open, he shouts to the first nurse he sees. "Hey, get us some help of here, now!"

The nurse's eyes widen and she picks up the phone to page the doctors. A strange chaos ensues as a group of doctors and nurses arrive with a stretcher. The doctor who appears to be in charge starts to poke and prod Jason, shining a light into his eyes, checking his pulse, and giving a cursory glance to his cuts. "What happened?" He aims his questions at Katie. "Do you know the extent of his injuries? Did he say anything before he lost consciousness? Does he have any medical conditions?"

Austin parks the vehicle and heads inside, grabbing his phone on the way. He dials Wes' phone and waits.

Mick leans back in his seat and gives a little laugh. "Just like old times, eh? How many times did we sit at a stakeout?"

*Katie smiles at Jason.* " I couldent just leave you. Of corse I would come and find you. I new you would do the same." *Katie turns her attachen to Con and AUstin again.* "It should be coming up soon."

*Rosetta nods.* "We might as well stay here for a bit. See if we can find anything out."

*Damien nods.*

To the hospital

Austin immediately pulls away from the curb to follow Katie's directions. As he drives, he shakes his head. "Thanks, Katie."

Con replies to Rosetta. "Yeah, we're going to the hospital. Jason's in pretty bad shape. I'd high tail it out of there before those guys get back. Though...you might want to stay at a distance and see if you can get a better look at them. Might be something we could use."

Mick exchanges a look with Rosetta as they get back to his truck. "I think luck was on our side with two really stupid criminals...but it feels too quiet...can't be a trap though, or they would have sprung it already..." He questions her and Damien. "Want to stick around or follow them to the hospital?"

Jason manages a small bite of orange, but coughs and refuses more. He winces as Katie cleans some of his cuts. "My face... feels like it's on fire," he mumbles, not realizing the severity of the knife wound across his eye and down his face. He frowns and tries to bring Katie's face into focus, but it's still a blur. "Thanks for....finding...me... I knew..." He coughs again, but still tries to talk. "I knew you'd come..."

As they hit a bump in the road, Jason's leg shifts and he cries out. Sweat trickles down the side of his temple as he breathes through the pain.

Con looks back at him with concern. "Hang on, Hotshot..."

On the way

*Katie nods to Con.* " GO down this street here. Take a left on Altamont, than 3 roads to Western than a left and its about a mile down."

*Rosetta pushed a mic button.* " We heading to the hospetal now?"

*Katie looks down as Jason as he rests his head in her lap.* " Hey you." *Katie peals the orange and puts it to Jasons lips.* "Eat some of this, you need your strength. You had us scaired Jason. I'm glad we found you." *Katie runs her hand through Jason's hair trying to keep him calm and his mind off the pain. Katie pulls a med pack from her backpack and slowly starts to clean out some of the nastyer looking cuts.*

*Rosetta lets out a long sigh.* "That seemed TO easy."

Jason

Austin sighs, contemplating his options. “How about we try that, Damien, it would…” his voice trails off. “No, wait, look…”

The two thugs exit the building. “You think that kid’ll be alright?”

“Ha!” The taller one gets into the driver’s side of the van. “We’re only going for a burger, and where do you think he’s going anyway?”

Austin watches as the van pulls away. “Surely it couldn’t be that easy…”

Con gives him a sly grin. “You said you’d been praying. And now you’re surprised?”

Austin rolls his eyes. “Oh me of little faith. But we’re not going in there blind. …Mick, Rosetta, Damien… get out of your truck and position yourselves around the building, and if any of you see those guys coming back, for pete’s sake warn us. Con and Katie are going in.” He glances back to Katie. “Here’s your shot.”

It takes only a few seconds for Con and Katie to make it to the building. After a swift kick to the door by Con, they’re able to enter. No sound…the room is vacant. Con sweeps the area with his gun, finding nothing…. “Jason?” he calls quietly. No response.

He points to a basement door. “There, Katie…follow me.” He cautiously opens the door and switches on the light, glancing down the narrow stairs. Hearing no movement, he moves down the steps, his gun poised in front of him. Once he reaches the bottom, he stops in his tracks, too stunned to rush in.

Jason is several feet from the back wall, standing with feet apart and both arms stretched above his head. Ropes bind his wrists together and are secured to a rafter high above him, allowing no room for movement. His clothes are grimy and blood-spattered, and his head is hanging as if he’s unconscious, or worse. Fear grips Con as he’s suddenly scared to see if Jason is even alive.

Sensing someone’s presence, Jason lifts his head. His face is bruised and cut, barely recognizable. One eye is swollen shut, the other barely open with a deep knife slice across it that runs diagonal down his face. Seeing at least one figure, but unable to see who it is, a smile spreads, despite the pain it evokes. “Hey, Bubba!” His voice comes out hoarse, but not lacking sarcasm. “Time for the ol’ hourly interrogation, huh? Why don’t ya just kill me and get it over with, eh?” He laughs, but it comes out more as a dry cackle, and ends up in a harsh cough. “That’s what you really want, isn’t it, ol’ buddy, huh? One bullet to the head and I’d be outta your hair.” His grin remains, though he winces through a wave of pain. “Ah, yes, but your boss man said no, didn’t he? So come on… take your best shot, go ahead. At least knock me out again so I don’t feel the next one.”

“Have mercy,” Con breathes. “Jason, what have they done to you?” He makes his way across the basement floor, emotions flooding his eyes.

Jason tilts his head, still unable to make out faces through the blur. “Con?”

“It’s me Jason…and Katie. We’re here to get you out. Take it easy.”

“Well, well, well, ya came after all.” Jason winces as he’s moved so Con can reach the ropes with his knife. “Thought maybe ya’ll forgot about me.”

“Of course not.” Con slices the ropes.

Jason’s arms drop down and he holds back a cy, forcing himself to continue his train of thought. “That’s alright…kinda cozy down here after all…dark…away from it all…pretty quiet most of the time. Kinda wish they woulda had a radio or something so I could sing along though.”

Con raises an eyebrow and exchanges a look with Katie. “Either they’ve doped him or he’s completely lost it.”

Jason swings his head blindly in Con’s direction. “Tell ya what, Pal, switch places with me, then see who appears to be insane. In the meantime let me live in happy ignorance of my pain until we’re out of here.”

Now understanding, Con nods. “You’re hurting pretty bad, aren’t you?”

“Don’t make me measure it.”

Con reaches under Jason’s arm to start guiding him across the floor, but Jason stumbles, almost taking them both down. “Watch it, Con, my knee is gone.”

“What do you mean?”

Another laugh escapes to cover up a cry. “Don’t ya know that’s what happens when a sledgehammer meets bone?”

Anger courses through Con’s veins. “If we had more time, I’d…”

“Just get me outta here Con.”

Con grits his teeth and lifts Jason again, this time prepared for the extra weight leaning on him. “Katie, take his other side. …Alright…one step at a time, Hotshot. You can do it.”

They make it back up the stairs with more difficulty than planned, and once they hit the door, Con lengthens his stride against the resistance from Jason. “Help me get him in the back, Katie,” he directs.

Austin’s eyes widen as he sees what kind of shape Jason is in. “Good land…”

Con helps get Jason settled laying down in the back seat with his head toward Katie, then hops in the passenger seat. “We gotta get him to a hospital, Austin.” He turns around in his seat. “Katie, you saw the map of this area back at the ranch… do you remember where the nearest hospital was?”

Many Differnt ways

*Katie nods.* "He's in there. I can feel him."

*Rosetta looks around at the building.* " There is a back door here, dosent look like there is an alarm system."

*Katie thinks and looks around at the saroundings.* "We could have someone Drive there truck away and see if they come out to chanse it. Than we go in. We find Jason and if we have to hide till nightfall. Than get him out. At least than we would know he is ok, and if we need to we will be right there for him." *Katie digs into her bag and pulls out an orange.* "I'll need this when we go in."

*Damien pipes up.* " I could always go and get in there and act like I was sent by Sam. I dont think those guys would know anything differnt. I can see what I can find out."

Need a plan

Cindy grips Wes’s hand, all of her fear returning.

Luke gives Angel an encouraging nod, even if he doesn’t feel that much confidence. “Of course…they’ll be fine and you know it. We haven’t been through all this before for nothing…it’s old hat to everyone now.” He throws her a quick wink. “It’ll all be over before we know it.”

Austin raises an eyebrow at Damien, thinking it over. Finally he nods. “Alright. You go with Mick and Rosetta.”

He begins to sift through some of their equipment. “I want everyone wired and in communication with each other. I’m hoping that by the time we get to Myersville that Lukas will have figured out where we need to go. If not, we’ll split up. Either way we’ll need surveillance to figure out patterns before we move in.” He grabs the case with weapons for himself and Con. “Let’s hope we don’t have to use them. My ultimate plan here is to get in and get out without so much as a peep out of anyone. I don’t know what kind of a setup they’ll have, but no matter what, our objective is to get Jason out without anyone from our side getting hurt. Any questions?” He looks around, hearing none. “Good. Let’s move out.”

Mick catches Rosetta’s eye as she hands him his gun, and a slight grin shows through. “Thanks.”

The drive seems to take an eternity. Austin is in the lead with Con and Katie, while Mick’s truck follows with him, Rosetta and Damien.

Austin’s cell phone rings. He immediately picks it up and hits the speakerphone, turning on his mic so everyone in both vehicles can hear. “Yeah?”

“Lukas here. I think I know where they’ve got Jason.”

“Where?”

“Don’t know how you figured it was Myersville, but if that much is true, he might very well be in the brick warehouse on the east side of town. I’ve seen a black van coming and going from there, but nothing that looks like legit business. So far I’ve seen two men, but there could be more. I’ve kept my distance so no one suspects anything.”

“Good work, Lukas. High tail it out of there so no one thinks you’re still in town if they are watching. We’ll take it from here.” Austin ends the call, and speaks, continuing to use his mic. “Hear that everyone? Sit tight for the ride – we’re going in for a closer look.”

Three hours later…

“It looks deserted.”

The two vehicles are parked along the side street, able to just see the back of the warehouse, using binoculars. Con shakes his head. “Seems too quiet to me.”

“Agreed.” Austin sighs, thinking deeply. “We’ve got to figure out how many men are in there, and we have to figure out how to get in and out without them knowing. Anyone got any suggestions?”

Mick looks through the window of his truck. “Three ways we can do this. Create a diversion and get them out in the open, sneak in and hope that we’re not seen, or barge the door and catch them by surprise…”

Austin rubs his chin wearily. “What do you think guys?” He glances at Katie. “You think this is where Jason is?”

The crook slams the basement door in frustration and plops down in his chair across from his partner, picking up the hand of cards that had been waiting. “Nothing.”

“Again?”

“He’s so out of it now, either we give him a break or he’ll die off before we even do it on purpose.”

The other one grunts. “Go down in another hour. At least we won’t get blamed for not trying hard enough.”

Locked and loaded

*Wes holds tights to Cindy's hand.*

*Angel looks to Luke.* "There gonna be ok right?"

*Damien stands.* "I'd like to go too. If I could. I could serve as a distraction seeing as they know who I am. I dont know if they think I am on what side but, I might be of some use. Unless you think staying here would be better for me? "

*Katie stands and grabs her coat and her baseball cap.* "Anything alse I need?" *Katie grabs her phone and laptop.*

*Rosetta looks to Mick and smiles. Going to the cabnet in the courner she grabs out some objects. Mick hands him his old gun, as she tucks her own away.* "They have been waiting. Lets do this. Katie you still have the gun Angel gave you?"

*Katie opens her coat alittle showing the gun.* "Yep."

We're going

Austin swallows hard. Up until now, he’s done well with not allowing his emotions to get tied up in this whole thing, but right about now, he’s tired and at his weakest. He can’t imagine what’s been happening to Jason, or what will happen if they don’t get to him in time.
He looks into Katie’s eyes for a moment, with the same stare as Jason…one that can penetrate the deepest of hearts. He knows she’s right. “Alright. I trust your judgment and I agree.”

He picks up the phone one more time. “Yeah, it’s me again. Listen, we’re going to head to Myersville too. No, don’t call off Lukas. Keep him there and have him call my cell phone if he finds anything. We’ll be on the road.” Hanging up, he turns around to Rosetta. “We’re going to Myersville. We don’t have enough time to sit around until we’re a hundred percent sure of his location.”

Austin glances around the room, realizing that now others are listening to him as well. “I know all of you would probably volunteer to help, but in a situation like this, we can’t risk everyone going in at once. They get wind of an invasion, Jason’s life will be the first we lose.” He stops for just a moment, swallowing his fear. “I’d like myself, Con and Katie to go in one vehicle, and…..Mick and Rosetta in another.” He looks at both of them, the past reflecting in his eyes. How this is so much the same, yet so different than over eighteen years ago. “How ‘bout it?”

Mick looks up quickly to Rosetta, more than willing, but wanting her to be okay with it too.

Cindy giggles and shakes her head. “Is there anything you don’t know how to do?” Her grin remains, even though she becomes more solemn. “You distract a woman so well…” She turns as Austin begins to talk, her tension returning.

*Katie nods to Austin.* " I dont know why but, ya I do." *Katie sits back in the chair holding her flower. Katie feels calm. Silent, the tast of blood, the bruses, he pain. Fear, but not for thereself but for the people he loves.* "Jason is calm. He hasent told them anything. He's beaten up pritty bad but he is alive." *Katie opens her eyes and looks around the room to where Cindy is. Lowing her voice she leans closer to Con and Austin.* " I hope Lukas can cover both buildings fast. We dont have much time left till....till they dont need him anymore. It will take us 3 hours to get to Myersville. I think it would be a good idea to start out now just in case. At this point time is very important and we dont have any to lose."

*Wes trys his best to joke around and keep Cindy's mind off everything.* " And than...." *Wes puts his hand behind her ear and pulls out a penny.* "WALA...You my dear have money in your ears." *Wes beams.*

*Rosetta goes over to the table with Austin, Con and Katie.* "So...now what?"

Feelings

Clint obliges and goes to get Wendy some coffee.

Austin sets down his coffee and immediately picks up the phone, not even questioning Katie as to how she knows the flower was from Jason. “Yeah, Reese? Get Lukas over to Myersville. Hmm? No, we got a lead. There’s…” He leans over to see Katie’s computer screen. “…two possibilities there. Have Lukas scout them out and call us back immediately with ANYthing out of the ordinary.” He ends his call and takes a deep breath, glancing to Katie. “This has got to be it…I didn’t think they’d go that far with him, but they had to have.” Austin looks at her inquisitively, pausing his thoughts for just a moment as if getting stuck on one in particular. “So…you’ve always been able to sense when something is wrong with Jason…what…I mean…do you feel anything now?”

“I told you he’s not gonna talk!”

A crook rolls his eyes at his partner. “You’ve been at him all night! How much more time do you need? We have to get this thing over with. You know those people at that ranch aren’t stupid. They’ll be out looking for him.”

The other grits his teeth. “Look, I’m doing all I can, short of cutting the kids throat. Maybe we should just take him in to headquarters.”

“No! You know we don’t do that. There’s too much risk for security breach. We get him to talk here or not at all.”

“Well how much time we got?”

“Until tomorrow night. If he doesn’t talk by then, we’ll kill him and move on.”

I know where

*Wendy smiles and yawns pulling her cold arms into her sweater.* " Sure. thank you."

*Katie turns and heads back inside holding the rose. Turning to Austin she reply.* " I....I know where Jason is. Or at least the area. He in Myersville around Reynolds Boutique. He must of ran new he couldent get away, but was smart enough to send a clue." *Katie goes to one of the computers doing a search.* "There are 2 building around there, one was an old wairhouse that has been closed for 3 years, and the other is a condemed house." *Katie looks to Austin.*

Boutique

Clint grins and nods. “Yep. Feels like it’s been a week though.” He nods towards the kitchen. “Want me to get you some coffee?”

Cindy looks down. “Me too…”

The delivery man turns around, halfway back to his truck. “Yeah, it’s Reynolds Boutique over in Myersville. Usually don’t make deliveries this far out, but whoever left the payment left enough to cover the gas.” He tips his hat. “Have a good day!”

By now, Austin is on his feet, hearing only half the conversation, and he waits expectantly for Katie to return.

Flower

*Wendy opens her eyes slowly looking up at Clint.* " Is it morning already?"

*Wes nods.* "I'm glad I am able to be here for you."

*Katie steps out from behind the door. Rosetta hands Katie the Rose.* "Katie this is for you. But I dont know who its from." *Rosetta looks at her with question."

*Katie steps out the door as the dilivery guys starts to walk away. Katie yells.* "Excuse me, I dident know there was a flowershop around here. Can you tell me what the name of your shop is please?"

Delivery

Con thanks Katie gratefully for the coffee as he tries to gain a second wind.

Cindy blushes slightly and puts her hair behind her ears. “Well…thank you, Wes. I…I don’t know how…I mean….you’ve been a great help to me.”

Clint types one-handed on the computer, not moving his one arm, lest he wake Wendy. He glances down at her thoughtfully for several moments, reflecting on what’s changed since he arrived here.

The young delivery man smiles broadly. “Hey, good morning. Hope I didn’t wake you folks, but this was the first stop on my route, being so far from town.” He takes his long box and opens it to withdraw a delicately wrapped single rose. He grins as he hands it over. “This is for a…” he squints at his order sheet. “Katie Pent.” His eyes twinkle with mischief. “No note though – must be a secret admirer. Enjoy.”

Hello?

*Wendy lays asleep her head on Clint's shoulder. She is tuckerd out its been a long day.*

*Rosetta is snuggled up in her chair with a blacket passed out.*

*Wes is on the coutch with Cindy keep her as much company as he can. As she wakes her smiles down at her.* " You would do no such thing. I dident mind at all."

*Katie gets up and gets 3 cups of coffee for Con, Austin and herself. Siting back down she sips her coffee*

*Rosetta wakes with a start as the door bell rings. Katie stands a bit in case anyone came back for round 2. Opening the door Rosetta greets the delivery man.*

*Katie slowly stands behind the door watching through the crack.*

The search continues

Several people have fallen asleep at the tables, including Luke, his head resting on his hands over printouts he’d been going through for hours.

Clint stares at his computer, his eyes feeling heavy, though he tries to get a second wind as morning is upon them.

Austin takes the papers from Katie with a nod. “Thanks. And yeah…” He offers a smile. “Coffee sounds awfully good right about now.” He glances around the room as it stirs quietly, and he lifts up yet another silent prayer for Jason.

More calls from Reese come in, confirming that nothing has been found. No criminal reports taking place, no leads from local jails…absolutely nothing to go on. And no ransom calls. Which meant it wouldn’t matter to the Agency if they killed Jason off, but Austin did not voice those thoughts.

The morning begins to wear on as the sun rises. The business around the ranch increases as some of the gang comes and goes, cleaning up for the start of the day, or those who had slept, return to begin helping out again.

Eight o’clock.

Cindy stirs in Wes’ arms, having long since fallen asleep without realization of where she was. Finally awake, she blinks, slowly becoming aware of where she is, sitting up, she looks quickly up at Wes. “Oh…I’m sorry…” She rubs her eyes wearily. “I should have moved…”

A delivery vehicle pulls up to the mess hall and someone gets out with a small parcel. The young man reaches the porch and rings the door bell.

Thinking

*Damien nods to Mick.*"Well I dont plane on running away so maybe we can find more info and go from there."

*Katie hopes on the computer and starts to look up buildings where Jason might be. After pulling a bunch of leads Katie hands the paper to Austin.*

*Wes hold Cindy for the rest of the evning.* " Its ok hun."

*As the clock hits 4am Katie gets up and streches her legs.* "Hey Austin you want any coffee or anything?" *She is tired but already took an hour nap and dosent want to sleep another wink. Katie's mind wonders to where Jason is. She hopes Jason knows she is thinking of him and they are trying to find him.*
