Rocky can't help his grin. "Oh, alright. If Jem Ferchin doesn't want to show herself, then I guess I can take you to lunch instead."
Watching Jess sign her name more slowly, he chuckles. "Well, I'll be. You are Jess Fisher! Then I'd be delighted to meet you for lunch at noon at..." He pauses and thinks. "Mom and Pops is good with me."
Listening to Carson and Ryder, Jason too, feels something a little off kilter.
Yeah, not sure quite what it is yet. I just don't feel like spilling too much information in front of him right now.
Receiving Katie's question, Ryder looks to her quickly. And for a moment, he just studies her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Ya know... you're an interesting team. Carson asks me questions he expects me to know, yet you question my knowledge when I've answered him."
He lifts an eyebrow and glances back to Carson. "Is it you she doesn't trust, or me?"
Carson grins a little. "Maybe both. But I wouldn't leave her in the dark unless you want to get on her bad side."
Ryder's mouth curls up at the corners, and he stands up to clear some of the paper plates off the table. "How does anybody know anything with security so tight? You think I'm with TJY without knowing anything about this area and what's happening?"
Jason bristles just a little. "You still haven't answered Katie's question."
Ryder turns from the sink. "I hear an implication in your tone."
"Maybe."
Carson looks back and forth between the men, analyzing the situation. So far he'd played things pretty cool, acting as though he trusted Ryder and who he was supposed to be. But he hadn't given away any information, also feeling the same way Katie had. He just hadn't gotten around to asking pointed questions yet - she'd beat him to it.
Ryder shakes his head. "Look, I don't know what Reese told you you'd find here, but I'm it. Either you trust me, or you're on your own, and I wouldn't recommend that."
Now it's Carson's turn to bristle. He gives Katie a glance, letting her know that he agreed with her questioning tone. "If you don't have anything to hide, then why won't you answer us about security? Do you have computers? Blueprints? An inside contact? What?"
"I've got eyes out there. I see the comings and goings for long enough to figure these things out."
"So you don't have actual proof of where the lab is."
"I didn't say that." Ryder moves closer to the table again. "I know what there is, and I'm here to get you in and out again."
Jason narrows his gaze. "I hope it's true about the getting out part."
Ryder throws up his arms. "What do you want? Confirmation from Reese?" He grabs a phone and picks it up. "Your call or mine."
Carson leans back in his chair, just watching. "Ryder, you haven't even checked us out. That seems pretty sloppy in itself. Then you expect to follow you blind? Allys don't normally expect to be trusted right off the bat."
"Look, what is this?" Ryder looks between all three. "I'm trying to help you out, and you're starting an interrogation process." He shakes his head and moves back to the table. "I suggest we get down to business and..."
He can't even finish his sentence. Carson is so quick to get up that his chair falls over. He moves with speed, going to pin Ryder's arm behind his back, but the other Australian is quicker, sidestepping the motion and coming back with a quick sweep to Carson's legs. Carson counters and goes for a jab to the mouth, but Ryder ducks, his own fist going for Carson's ribs. Carson sidesteps and finally gets an opening to put Ryder in a choke hold. "That's Agency routine," he hisses into Ryder's ear. "I know those moves because they were drilled into my head. The pattern is the same. Now you better start talking about who you really are unless you want a broken neck."
Ryder struggles under Carson's grip, and gasps for air. In a move of despiration, he drops to one knee, throwing Carson over his shoulders and onto the floor. Seeing Jason move, Ryder backs up, and in less than a second, he's got a sawed-off shotgun cocked aimed at the group. Breathing heavily, he looks at all three. "Jason, who first called you Hotshot?"
"What?" Jason's anger starts to rise and he tries to contain it for now.
"Who first called you Hotshot?" Ryder repeats, raising his voice. "Tell me, or so help me, I'll blow your head off."
"It was Laura!" Jason holds up his hands. "What does that have to do with..." His sentence trails off as he sees Ryder lower the shotgun.
Carson finally gets up off the floor. "What in blazes is going on?"
Ryder lets out the breath he'd been holding, and uncocks the gun. "You guys really know how to push the limits, don't you?" He shakes his head. "I thought I might never find out if you were for real or not."
Carson looks at Katie, then Jason, then back to Ryder. "Are you crazy?"
"For being here? Yes. Look, I'm sorry. But I had to make sure you guys weren't from the other side. Internet has been down for two days. Reese couldn't get me the specs and I didn't know what any of you looked like. You think you've been walking blind, so have I. Reese told me about the nickname, so that was my only source of making sure you all were the right people."
Carson lifts his eyebrows, bewildered. "Well now that you believe we're from TJY, what about you? I spent a year in training at the Agency to learn those moves."
Ryder shakes his head and puts the shotgun back in the corner by the cubboards. "I spent a year in training too."
"So you are with the Agency." Jason is so confused, that his anger disperses.
"No." Ryder looks down, his tone growing quiet. "But I was." An awkward pause follows, and he drops whatever story there might be about the past. "It was a long time ago. And now I'm on your side. I know about the place here because I have an inside contact. I wasn't going to just blurt that out in case you were from the Agency, come to feel me out. I don't have all the equipment and technoligy out here like you do back in the States. No security measures, other than my own brain."
Carson takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly as he folds his arm across his chest. "Alright. So... are we all clear on this then. Are we going to trust each other or what?"
"I will if you do." Ryder nods to Katie. "Sorry. You were right to question me. I just didn't know if I could answer you yet or not." He glances to Carson and Jason again. "I was telling the truth when I said we had to sit a day or two. If you're willing to listen, I'll tell you more about it. If you think you need to call Reese still, go ahead, but the phone lines aren't secure. You were followed by a TJY agent all the way here, and he's the only reason I knew who you were supposed to be at the airport. Now... are we trusting each other?" He looks to Katie, seeming to sense that she might be the hardest to convince. "Please believe me. I'll answer any questions you have."

Fight
How?
Looking up from her desk a smile spreads across her face as she see Rocky. As her lips curl a little more, a more sassy grin makes itself known.
"Listen here, I let it slide the first time but now I cant take it. There is no Jem Ferchin here only me, butttt....I am more than willing to give you my sig and go to lunch with a rock star."
Taking the package Jess slowly down her writting a little so you can clearly see what her name was.
"Time and place and I will be there."
Listing to everything Ryder was saying Katie picks up on the small details here and there relizing he was skimming over a few things about himself.
I wonder, maybe when we can we should bring it to Carson's attachen.
Within no time they are to the cabin and Katie gets out. Taking a glance around she smiles. She loved being in the country.
"Mmmmm..to me this is heaven not roughing it. It reminds me of home minus the horses."
Grabbing her bag Katie follows the other inside. Claming witch room was hers she thorws her bags onto the bed and takes a few things out that she would including making sure her gun was in her holster and on her. Making her way back downstairs she slids onto one of the stools next to Jason for lunch.
Continuing to listen once again Katie has a peek of caution as Ryder rambles off much information about The Agency's set up. It was off to her and she couldnt help but ask.
"Ryder I dont mean to be rude and all but how is it that you know so much about The Agencys building if the sacurity is so tight?"
Taking her sip of water Katie just watchs Ryder waiting for his reply.
South side
"Suite yourself." Ryder holds the door open for Katie. "Watch the seatbelt - it likes to catch."
Carson winds up in the backseat with Katie, letting Jason take the passenger seat beside Ryder.
Once out of the heavy traffic around the airport, Ryder tilts his hat back on his head and drives at a relaxed speed. He glances at Katie in the rearview mirror. "We got about two hours."
Carson stares out his window, surprisingly quiet. The scenery looked so familiar, yet so foreign. It hadn't been all that long since he'd been to Australia. But it had been a blur, living in a fog while thinking Misty was dead. He didn't really consider that time at all, part of when he spent here. No... what he remembered was years before that, when this was his life... when he'd called this territory his home.
Ryder breaks the silence. "We're going to be roughing it for a couple days. There's been a bit of activity around the location we're going to be heading to, so laying low is the best option at this point." His tone has become a little more sober as he gets down to business. "I work for a private tourist agency on a regular basis. This keeps my income up and is the perfect cover, while I work for TJY on the side. That's why it's worked so well for me to pick you guys up. We'll be staying at a cabin where we've had folks before who want to get a taste of Australia, but not so much as sleeping under the stars."
He chuckles. "We've had some doozies. I'm just glad to get some people here who have a purpose other than to gawk. Reese said he was sending the best."
The drive takes about as long as Ryder had said it would, and by the time the foursome reaches the cabin, stomaches are growling. They seemed to be out in the middle of nowhere. They'd driven half an hour on a dirt road to get here, and there were no other buildings in sight. Just trees and wildlife.
Parking near the cabin, Ryder slides out. "Come on in, the place is empty. We'll scrounge up something to eat too. Later on we can discuss a gameplan, but trust me when I say we've got time at this point. It's too dangerous to make a move right now."
Getting inside, bags are put away and soon sandwiches and water are on the table. A small air conditioner made the indoor temperature and humidity bearable, though it was still warm.
"So..." Ryder takes a sip of water as they sit around the table. "Carson, you know where the base is then?"
"I could probably get there if I looked at a map first." Carson nods and swallows a bite of sandwich. "How'd you get tangled up in this?"
"Oh, I've been feeding TJY for a few years." Something in Ryder's tone had suddenly shifted, almost to make one wonder if he was telling all.
Jason picks up on it.
Interesting. I wonder what's up there. I hope he really is on our side.
"How's security?" Carson questions.
"Tight."
"And the lab?"
"It's on the south side now."
Far from home
Smiling Katie looks to Jason and than back to Ryder giving a small grin as his comment and how much it reminded her of how Carson talked to Misty. Katie couldnt help but wonder what it was like for Carson to be back home.
"I think I'll hop in the back this time let one of the boys sit shotgun, but if your lucky maybe next time I will sit up front."
Getting into the backseat Katie throws a smile to Ryder. Within seconds the truck jolts forward. Staring out the window Katie cant help but keep her smile held. They were here with a mission but to Katie this was still amazing. She was so far from home and it was an amazing feeling. Something new, and the sites everything looked so pretty.
"So Ryder how long will it take us to get to our destination?"
Bloodhound
Jason smiles inwardly.
We're all keeping our eyes peeled, Hero. Keep it up. We may be the elite, but we all need extra eyes, even if we think the coast is clear.
Ryder leads the threesome outside where the sun has by now risen and has started to cast a heat over the city. Heading toward the parking lot, Ryder turns his head to see Katie as he hears her questions.
"Always lived here? Pretty much. Just as few, ah, shall we say, "business trips" have taken me to the States a couple times." He winks at Katie, signaling that those trips were probably related to TJY.
"As for great sights around here, that all depends on what you're looking for. City attractions? Got those. Life out in the peace and quiet? Got that too. But I think Carson could probably tell you about must of that."
Carson adjusts his backpack as he walks. "Been a couple years."
"Not much has changed, mate. Few more buildings... few more people. But it's the same." Reaching an old pickup, he lets the bags be put in the bed under a tarp. "As for secrets, they still exist too. Maybe harder to find. But they don't know about the bloodhounds like me."
Opening the door, he waves inside. "Alright. Hop in. Got your spots picked, or do I get the pretty sheila up front with me?"

Bodyguard
Rolling her eyes as Jason and Carson banter Katie shifts herself to look out the window. Watching the building and lights come into view Katie cant help but looks in aw. It worked that she was in aw after all they were "on vacation."
Finally landing and getting off the plane Katie holds tight to Jason's hand. The airport was packed and it was hard to move. It was easy to lose someone in this mess. Grabbing her bage she slings it over her should still glancing around at all the people. It wasnt her job to be a bodyguard on this mission but Katie couldnt help her instincts anyways as she took everything in and protected the two guys anyways.
Turning to see the guy coming twords them Katie holds out her own and gives her greeting to him giving one of her shinning smiles.
"Nice to meet you Ryder."
Starting to follow after him Katie knows not to talk about the case but keep it casule. Outside where anyone could be watching that was the best to do.
"So Ryder, have you always lived here in Austraila and can you sugest any good places for use to see?"
He seems ok to me. I am not here as your bodyguard but I cant help it anyways.
Hot one
Seeing Nate approach her cubicle, Laura tenses just a little. She knew she'd hurt his feelings, and she just felt horrible. Would he be upset with her?
The thought had been a silly one. Seeing the coffee and then the rose, Laura feels a part of her melt all over again. Looking at them, her gaze falls downward and she feels the kiss to her head. Looking up as Nate walks away, she just watches him as he goes to his own desk. She puts the rose to her face to feel the soft petals and smell the rich scent. "Oh, Nate," she whispers. "What am I supposed to do with you?"
Turning around, she gives a little sigh, but a slight smile is at the corner of her mouth. She still felt in limbo... but knowing he was willing to wait for an answer made it just a bit more bearable.
Kyle's shoulders drop. "You mean he won't be at the concert tomorrow night?"
"No. He and Katie are both on a case."
Kyle sighs and leans back against the wall, standing behind the keyboard in Mike's basement. Another morning practice. Except today it was just the Mitts and Mike. "So now what?"
Phil shrugs. "Jase said to be sure you knew he wasn't mad at you, and it was up to us to decide what to do. Far as I'm concerned, you can sing lead like you have for us any other time he's been out."
"I don't think that's such a good idea."
"You sang lead the whole time Jason was in prison," Mike reminds.
Kyle rolls his eyes. "That was before I was the big bad wolf."
"Nobody says that," Jen chides. "You did a good job before. You've always been a good singer. Now we just know that you're even more than that. You're a great singer and we just didn't realize it. So why not use your talent for the concert? What's the big deal?"
Kyle sits back down at the keyboard, his eyes lowered. "I'll have Cryptic the next night. That's too much."
Phil frowns. "So you'd choose them over us?"
"That's not it! Why don't you sing? You've got a voice."
Phil smirks. "Yeah. I know I can sing. And I'm fair. A month ago, I woulda said I was as good as you, so who cared who sang. But now I know that you're the one with the real vocal talent here. You want me to sing, I will, but the audience would rather have you."
"Great." Kyle runs a finger over the keys in front of him. "Everything is on my shoulders then."
Phil sighs. "Look, fine. If you don't want to be a part of the team and fill in while Jason's gone, so be it. But I thought that's what we were - a team."
"Alright, I'll do it." Kyle looks up at his brother. "But it's my last night."
Jen's eyes widen. "What do you mean?"
"I... I'm quitting the band."
Mike and Phil join in the shocked expressions. Phil blinks. "You're what?"
"Quitting." Kyle crosses his arms. "This is my last concert with JetStream, and the one with Cryptic is my last with them too."
"But, Kyle," Jen begs, "Why? This isn't anything we can't work through."
"Kinda hard to be in a band when I'm not here anymore." Kyle shakes his head tiredly. "Look, I've been invited to join Break Out and I'm going to. We pull out next week."
Tears fill Jen's eyes. "You're going to leave? For how long?"
Kyle shrugs. "The tour lasts a year. After that, who knows."
"So this is it." Phil was still stunned. "What... what happens to JetStream?"
"You can survive without me." Kyle rolls his eyes. "I don't add all that much anyway. You got Jason - he's what the crowd likes. You can be backup vocals, and if you really want a keyboardist, hit Rocky up. But... I've made up my mind."
Mike swallows hard. "So... you're not joining Cryptic then either."
"No. I have yet to tell them that."
"What will they do?"
Kyle shrugs. "I don't know. I don't think Rocky wants to sing lead. They might have Taylor sing for a while - it would be a different feel. Logan wants to but can't. Axel doesn't want to. Max can't sing all that well, and Joel isn't cut out for it. So... I don't know."
Phil looks down for a minute. "Guess you're a pretty big piece to both these bands, huh?"
Kyle doesn't answer him. Instead, he grabs some sheets of music. "If I'm singing tomorrow night, I need to figure out what songs we'll be doing. What should the lineup be?"
The delivery man opens the glass door and slips inside, scanning the package in his hand. Approaching the front desk, he purses his lips and nods. "I got something for Jem Ferchin." Rocky glances to Jess, humor in his eye. "She doesn't happen to be free for a signature and lunch, does she?"
Jason grins and brings Katie's hand to his lips to kiss it lightly. A kick to the seat makes him turn around and look at Carson in question. Carson just quirks an eyebrow at him, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Settle down up there, Hotshot."
Jason smirks and rolls his eyes, looking to Katie. "As if he's one to talk."
Carson laughs and settles back in his seat, pulling his ballcap down over his eyes. "Alright, now you can go ahead. I'm not watching."
Jason grins and leans over to give Katie a kiss on the lips.
If only he knew we were breaking the rule about not letting him hear everything that was said.
"Hey," Carson growls. "Shut up."
Jason withdraws from Katie, laughing. "Quit eavesdropping."
"I'm not." Carson keeps his eyes hidden beneath the brim of his hat. "If I was, I'd probably haul off and kick your seat again. But I'm being nice and not listening."
"Idiot."
"Hothead."
"Grouch."
"Numskull."
Jason opens his mouth to throw out another name, but a sudden jolt to the plane cuts him off as they run into turbulence.
Carson lifts his head to look around. "Well now. This is going to be fun..."
...The airport is a mass of moving bodies, all heading their own directions all at once. People talking everywhere. Intercom announcements. The sounds of planes taking off and landing.
Jason keeps a firm grip on Katie's hand, making sure he didn't lose her in the crowd. It fit - the three of them were supposed to be roommates on vacation. He looks to Carson, who nods toward the side where they could go downstairs and collect their bags.
Once retrieving their luggage, the three head toward the front of the airport. "So who are we looking for?" Jason asks.
"Don't know what he looks like," Carson admits. "But if he's any good, he'll find us."
As if on cue, a lanky blonde approaches them, looking out from under a straw cowboy hat. He holds out a hand to offer a handshake. "G'day, mate," he greets Carson. "You three look like you're just a little bit lost. How about a tour guide to get you going in the right direction?"
Carson grins and accepts the friendly gesture. "Ryder?"
"Carson?"
"And Jason and Katie," Carson introduces. "We're relying on you from here on out."
"No worries." Ryder smiles, his eyes shining. "Follow me. It's a hot one out here today."
Pink
In and out of sleep Katie trys her best to rest up. But with no luck much sleep at a time did not come. Katie's mind moves from one thing to the next so quickly. On the outside she looked calm and good excitment written on her face, but in ward was the constint though about what the trip was really about and the dangers.
Looking out the window and seeing the sun rise a small smile forms on Katie's lips. It was the same sun, that we there day after day. The same one everyone alse was looking at. The coming sun gave hope that everything would be ok.
Feelig Jason fingers in her own Katie tightens her own grip just alittle he smile forming on her face once again.
Good Morning!
Entering TJY Nate runs a hand through his wet hair. He was running later than he wanted to be today but it had been a restless night and now he was feeling it. The coffee in hand would serve its purpis well and the other along with the flower would as well.
Slowly walk to Laura's cubicle Nate gives a small tap on the wall to get her attachen. Handing her the extra coffee and the pretty pink rose Nate smile.
"Please dont feel strange around me now Laura. I love you just the same and for that fact I will give you all he time you need. I am in no hurry. Just let me know when ever you are ready."
Stepping closer to Laura Nate gives the top of her head a kiss before steping away and turning to leave.
Good morning
Con hangs up the phone a little wearily. He wished there was more he could do to help... but this was something he couldn't at all.
Wandering through the living room, he checks on Laura one more time, then heads upstairs. Crawling into bed next to Jamie, he wraps his arm around her to hold her close. He was glad that they'd found each other and had not questioned their love. He felt so blessed that Jamie had been willing to spend her life with him. He hoped his sister could find the same kind of happiness that he had.
Giving Jamie's cheek a kiss, he whispers in her ear. "I love you."
The ocean below was one big black expanse, yet to be lit by the morning sun. Stars dotted the sky, waiting for the hazy dawn.
Jason leans his head against the airplane's window, looking out into the great nothingness. He'd been able to sleep a little bit on the first leg of their journey, but as they headed for Australia, nerves had kept him awake.
Hearing the stirring behind him, he turns to see Carson awake in the seat behind him.
Carson catches his eye for a moment. No words needed to be said. Everyone knew at what stage they were, and what was happening. He glances up to Katie just to check on her. They were the only three people in the back corner of the plane, able to converse as freely as they dared, but remain quiet enough and not gain much attention. A chatterbox for a stewardess was the only annoyance they'd had thus far, having to lie through their teeth about going on vacation to Australia.
Jason's mind wanders, trying to find somewhere to land. He wanted to find something to talk about, other than the case right now. Then he remembers what he had yet to ask Carson about.
"Hey, Carson..."
...Carson lets out a low whistle as the information about Axel hits his ears. He and Jason had been speaking quietly for several minutes now, undisturbed and unheard by anyone else but Katie. “No… no he never told me about that.”
Jason gives a little cringe. “I thought maybe he had. I didn’t want to go spread this around or anything I just…”
“You just don’t want anybody getting hurt.” Carson nods. He understood, but while he himself knew that one couldn’t be judged by a stained past, not everybody would look at this that way. “I know. But now what?”
“That’s the hard part.” Jason sighs. “I know Cryptic doesn’t know about it, because Rocky has said that they never have known about Axel’s past. I don’t want to stir up trouble, but I do think people ought to know, especially when he’s around people like Taylor all the time. If I were her, even if I trusted Axel completely, I’d want to know about this.”
“Yeah…” Carson takes a sip of coke that the stewardess had brought him, grimacing a little as the carbonation goes down with difficulty. “Axel and I are pretty good friends, but even I don’t know how I’d talk to him about this.”
“Well… I guess I could do something more if you think I should.”
“No.” Carson shakes his head. “Let me take it from here. I know Axel better than you do, and I see the others all the time, too. I’ll… think of something.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem.”
Jason starts to turn back around in his seat, but then stops and looks back to Carson again. “Can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“What’s different about you?”
A grin spreads on Carson’s face. “I’ve been accepted and saved despite every despicable thing I’ve ever done. I’m loved despite my faults and despite my human nature. That’s enough to change a man, don’t you think?”
Jason furrows his brow a little, trying to figure out the angle.
Carson just looks him in the eye, holding his grin. “I may be a rebel and ruffian, but even I have a purpose, and even God can make something out of someone like me. Finding the purpose in my own passions and my own personality has impacted me more than anything else, Jason.”
“God, huh.” Jason is a bit skeptical, even though he’d been trying to figure it out himself for a while now. “And what’s the purpose in all that?”
“To be used not in spite of, but together with the personality I’ve been given. I’ve got a place somewhere. Maybe I haven’t quite found it yet, but I know now that I don’t have to change into something I’m not just to find it. I have a new heart. I have new intentions and a new perspective that keeps me from doing some stupid things I used to do. But I’m still me… and I can be me… somewhere.”
Jason gives a little laugh. “That’s not the Carson we brought down and held at TJY.”
Carson chuckles. “No, it’s not. My outlook has changed. And even that, God had to change for me… I couldn’t do it myself.”
Jason’s confusion persists, but he pushes it aside for now, unable to help a short quip. “Is that why we’re suddenly getting along?”
Carson’s laugh is genuine. “Takes two to get along, Jase.” He stretches out as far as the space between seats would allow, and stifles a yawn. “Guess maybe I’m not the only one rethinking things, eh?”
Jason is quiet, then finally ends the conversation by turning back around, his mind churning several directions. Interesting. Very… interesting.
A glow comes through the window, proving that the sun was rising, even this far from home. The ocean below became to shimmer, radiance sparkling off the water. It was a beautiful sight.
Reaching beside him, Jason curls his fingers around Katie's hand.
Good morning.
Laura slips into TJY and heads straight for her cubicle. She wasn't quite as put together this morning as usual. Having woken up at Con and Jamie's, it had been a rush to get home, then to work, and she was a few minutes late. Looked like she'd have to work a little more tonight to make up her time.
As she arrives at her desk, she keeps her eyes from wandering across the room over to where Nate's space was. The night hadn't solved anything, and the fear, confusion and hurt from the evening before still lingered. She wouldn't know what to say to Nate even if she were to speak with him.
Sitting down at her desk, Laura tries to start work for the day.
Ready
Heading down the hall and glancing into the living room Jamie spots Laura with Con. Giving him a knowing nod she heads for the bedroom. They had always said Laura could come anytime she wanted or needed someone and she would never change her mind about that. When Con was done he would be up.
Leaning back in his chair Nate stairs at the tv. Not really paying attachen enough to know what was playing but enough to keep his mind busy. Hearing his cell ring for a moment Nate hesitates to answer it. He really didnt feel like talking to anyone right now. But thinking better of it and that it might be an emergncy he pick it up.
"Hello?"
Hearing Con's voice on the other end Nate gives a sigh. The memories of the nights events coming back to him like they only happend moments ago.
"Hey Con its good to hear from ya....Yeah I dont plane on giving up not yet, just is hard is all. I know its 10x harder on Laura so I am gonna be as pashent as I can be."
Almost going to hang up the phone Nate stops knowing Con was still on the other end.
"Hey Con? Have a good night and Thanks!"
Hanging up the phone Nate lets out a sigh and goes for his jacket that way handing up. Taking the tiny ring box out of the pocket he just told it before turning and heading upstairs. Going into his room and to his dresser Nate opens the tiny jewlery case the was on the top and places the ring inside closing it and heading to bed. Tomarrow had to be a better day right? Checking on his sister one last time he places a soft kiss on her head before heading back into his own room and crawling into bed ready to leave this whole day behind him.
2/17/09
Come around
Sitting at one end of the couch, Con doesn't hear the doorbell ring. For once, he was glad for the light they'd installed as it blinked to signal someone at the door.
Glancing to the other end of the room, he can't see a car, but shrugs. It was late. Jamie was getting ready for bed. He'd just been finishing up watching a show on television. Who would be here?
Con gets up and cautiously opens the door. Seeing his sister, his eyebrows rise. "Laura. Hi. What's up?"
Laura forces a smile. "I... Do you have time to be my big brother?"
Con's expression softens. "I always do. Come on in."
Laura steps inside and wanders to the living room with Con. "I didn't interrupt anything did I?"
"No. Jamie's around here somewhere. Sit down... tell me what's on your mind."
Laura sighs then flops down in the corner of the couch. Kicking off the tennis shoes she'd traded for her nice shoes just half an hour earlier when she'd changed clothes, she pulls her feet up on the couch, curling up against the soft cushions. A tear rolls down her cheek.
Con watches her cautiously, wandering to the couch as well to sit down quietly beside her. He just lets her sit, not asking until she was ready to talk. Seeing Jamie come from the hall, he looks to her quickly. He hoped she didn't mind Laura was there - they'd always left the house open to his sister any time she wanted to come.
Laura sniffs and finally looks up to Con. "Nate asked me to marry him."
Con's eyes widen. He would have smiled, had it not been for Laura's tears. "And... what did you tell him?"
"I didn't." Laura's voice cracks. "I just... I couldn't yes, and I couldn't say no and..." She proceeds to tell her brother what had happened, and how scared she'd been.
Con did his best just to listen and give Laura a hug. But he really had no advice. He knew she was scared. But he also knew she did love Nate. Yet he could not give her any advice. This would have to be her own decision.
An hour later, Laura is fast asleep on the couch. Con lays a blanket over her and wanders to the kitchen where he finds Jamie still up. "I'm gonna let her sleep on the couch," he informs quietly. He wraps his arms around his wife, giving the top of her head a kiss. "I gotta make a call... I'll be up to bed in a few minutes."
Separating himself from her, he goes for the phone and dials. Holding the receiver up to his good ear and turning up the volume, he hears Nate answer. "Hey, Nate... it's Con. Listen... I just wanted to tell you to hang in there. It's none of my business, but... don't give up on Laura yet. I have a feeling she'll come around."
Asleep
Sitting there while Laura left Nate felt almost numb. Everything seemed to hurt and he wasnt sure what to do now. Pushing his plate to the side Nate props his elbows on and leans his head into them the tears coming to his eyes again. He felt so helpeless and he didnt know what to do.
Finally calling the waiter over Nate gets the check and stands making his way to the front. Paying for the meal Nate heads out of the restront.
Heading to his car Nate trys to keep his shoulder as high as he can. Letting out a long sigh as he starts his car Nate exits the parking lot and makes his way home.Where for once Nate only hopped Maggie would be asleep so tonight he wouldnt have to try and explain to her what happend.
Need to
Laura feels terrible. Seeing the tears behind Nate’s own eyes felt as badly as if she had hauled off and slapped him.
Turning back to the table, she takes a napkin to wipe her eyes, but they just didn't seem to want to stop crying, even as silently as it was.
Her gaze won't lift. She felt as if her eyes were glued to the table. The color had returned to her cheeks and all she could do was feel awful.
The food came. But she wasn't hungry. Making small talk just seemed too hard. She had ruined their evening. She had ruined Nate's evening.
She swirls her fork on her plate. But only a few bites had been taken.
Nate had tried so hard. He'd done such a beautiful job of proposing. No man had ever expressed love to her like he had. And it made her feel like a princess. But she'd ruined it. She'd ruined it all. She was leaving him in a terrible position, and now there was an awkward tension between them that she hated.
Unable to take it any longer, Laura finally stands up. Setting her napkin down, she picks up her purse. "I'm sorry," she apologizes quietly. "I... I need to go." Passing by Nate, she leans down to give his forehead a kiss, but she doesn't linger. She has to get out before the waterworks started again.
The night air felt good. But not good enough. Her car was dark and it drew a strange comfort around her. But it was quiet. She felt alone. She was lonely and had just left someone who had offered her the world.
Frustrated, she starts the engine and pulls out into traffic.
sadness
Laura's words are like a crack of thunder to his ears as the rain rolls into his heart. Laura hadnt said no, but she hadnt said yes eather and now, now he had to wait even longer.
Gently letting go of her hands Nate takes the tiny ring and puts it back into the box. Giving the best smile he can a few tears can be seen in Nate's own eyes something that didnt happen often.
"You can have all the time you need Laura."
Getting off his knee Nate stands putting the tiny box into his pocket. Looking around the room Nate slowly sees everyone going back to there dinner. Letting out a silent sigh that was mixed with the feeling of hurt Nate slowly slips into the seat across from Laura again. He new she didnt mean to hurt him, and she really did need her time, Nate new she did care for him but still...the pain was there just the same
Seeing the waiter come twords there table with dinner Nate whipes his face and smile once again.
"Just in time I'm starving."
Though really he wasnt that hungry.
Tears
Seeing the fear behind Nate’s gaze, Laura’s tears only build until one finally trickles down her cheek.
Looking back down to see the ring again, she swallows hard and blinks, sending a tear down the other side of her face.
Silence. A reply just wouldn’t surface. She had lived in danger for years. She had been in car chases. She had been shot. She had been on death’s door. She had beaten men to a pulp with her own hands. She had learned to survive with the best of them. Yet nothing… nothing compared to the terror she felt, receiving Nate’s invitation.
Her lower lip begins to quiver. Reaching out, she takes Nate’s hands, cupping them between her own, but letting him keep the ring in his own fingers. Bending over, she rests her face against his rough knuckles, the silent tears streaming.
“I love you, Nate,” she whispers as her voice wavers. “I really do. Please don’t think I don’t.”
She sniffs, but can’t bring herself to look up at him. “I just… I don’t know… I’m so sorry.”
Her fingers run over the outside of Nate’s hands, feeling the familiar curves. “Will you…” She closes her eyes, hating the hurt she knew she was causing. “…give me some time to think about it?”
Shakes
Just watching Laura Nate smile grows. The spark that shown in her eye. Nate grew more nervouse by the minute. As the silence drags on and the tears in Laura's eyes come Nate can only hope they are tears of Joy.
Still holding Laura's hand and the silence continues Nate can hear the chatter from the other people in the restront as his heart races and his own hand shakes just a bit.
Looking down at the ring he takes it from the box and holds it out to Laura as if offering to put it on for her repeating his words once again.
"Laura will you marry me?"
Shock
Nate's compliment sends color to Laura's cheeks. Even though Nate complimented her all the time, it always made her blush.
Getting set at the table, the candle-lit restaurant was a nice change from fast food. Laura settles back to enjoy the warm atmosphere and just unwind while talking to Nate.
When there is a pause and he reaches to take her hand and begins to speak, Laura suddenly finds that her pulse has quickened. She stared into Nate's eyes, somehow knowing that this was more than his normal compliment... this was more than what he'd ever said before. It was deeper and more sincere than anything he'd ever said. Her palm grew a little sweaty.
His words filled with more and more meaning… meanings that Laura had not expected to hear. She holds her gaze, now questioning the intention behind Nate’s presentation of love.
As he moves from the table and takes a knee, Laura could feel her heart leap into her throat. Her face felt so warm, she was afraid she was as read as a strawberry. Her hands shook.
She searched Nate’s eyes, his words melding together. But the proposal rang clear. He wanted her to be his wife.
Finally lowering her gaze, she stares down at the beautiful ring. She swallows hard. Her heart beat so hard within her chest she could hear it pounding in her ears. Everything else in the restaurant became a blurry background. All she could see was Nate. The look of love in his eyes was sincere. It was true.
Laura opens her mouth, but no words seem to come. Suddenly she realizes the pain behind her eyes is tears stinging them. She hadn’t realized they had risen to the surface.
She puts a hand to her mouth, still staring at the ring. Her face slowly turns from red to slightly pale. And looking back up at Nate, the words just wouldn’t come.
Candles
Katie looks to Jason, than to Carson and than back to Hal. She felt a bit nervouse. Leaving Texas to go to Nevada had been the farthest from home she had even been and now, now she was going over seas. Katie new she would be ok, she was in good hands with her two friends but still it was a bit nerve racking.
"Ready, lets his the road."
Taking Jason's hand Katie makes her way to the door. It braught her a bit of comfort knowing he was going to be there with her.
Stairing at the closed infermary door Misty lets out a sigh. So far from home Carson would be and though it was to help Angel she still wished he didnt have to go and face the danger that awaited.
"He's gonna be ok right Rick?"
Turning Misty goes back to her desk and sifts through a few papers trying to keep her mind on something alse for now.
Waiting at the door for Laura Nate sees her enter and smiles walking up along side of her.
"You look very pretty tonight Larua!"
Taking hold of her arm and smiling he guilds them to there seat. He could never be prouder to have something so beautiful on his arm and to him today was a special day.
Sitting across from Laura Nate just smiles as they order and get there drinks. The small candle casting a soft glow to Laura's face and the music in the background playing quietly just setting the mood.
The talk is light as they wait for there food, both joking and remembering the past. Finally there conversation had a break in it and it was quiet. Looking down at the table for a moment Nate finally looks up back. This quiet break was the opening he needed. It was now or Nate would never do it.
Taking Laura's hand in his own he holds it silent for a moment as he runs his thumb over it. His other hand resting in front of him. Looking up again He meets Laura's eyes the flicker of the candle giving them a glow that made Nate's heart flutter.
"Laura its been a year today that you have blessed me with being the luckiest man in the world. I remember when I first came to TJY I saw you and I leaned over to Con and made a comment about the cutie that just walked in the door."
Nate stops and shakes his head gives a tiny chuckles at the memorie.
"And he stoped and looked at me and told me you were his sister. I think I was scaired of him from that point on, but than one day I think it was a simple Hi you said to me and I relized that even if I was scaired of your brother it was worth it."
Nate is silent again as he gathers his thoughts.
"Than I was lucky enough for you to go for ice cream with me that day, and you ended up letting me part of your life. It took a while but I'd never change anything because when you finally said I could be more than a friend it was the happest moment of my life, and to this day I have never regretted it."
Nate clears his throat again and he continues to look deep into Laura's eyes. He was so nervouse and his heart was thumping so fast he feared that she could hear it herself. Shifting just a little Nate gets out of his chair and comes closer to Laura bending down on one knee he looks up at her.
"Laura, I hate it when we have to say good bye and go our own ways. I hate not knowing your ok, and if you made it there ok or not. Sometimes I feel silly for thinking these things but than I remember I do because I love you very much."
Taking a deep break Nate continues to talk for fear if he stoped he would never get it out.
"I hope that one day I wont have to wonder anymore because I will know when you get home, and I will know you are ok. Laura I want that day to be soon, I want to not have to say goodbye to you anymore and worry about you are night, because you will be in my arms and I will be keeping you safe."
Moving his free hand Nate opens it and laying in his palm is a black silk box. Letting go of Laura's hand he opens it slowly to reveal a silver ring with a single small dimond in the middle that sparkled in the light.
"Laura Gribbs, will you marry me and let me take care of you?"
Ready
Jason hesitates on the way downstairs and turns, staring after Dalton. "I will," he replies quietly. "...I will."
Giving a sigh, he keeps up his route until he's downstairs and finds Katie. "Hey you. All set or what?"
A smile creases Carson's lips as he sees the locket. Just looking at it for several moments, he finally reaches out to take it, letting it dangle and sparkle in the light. "Old and new... I like that."
Slipping it over his head, he tucks it safely underneath his t-shirt. "Thanks, Misty." His thanks meant so much more. It wasn't the necklace he was grateful for... it was the trust he'd gained back. The trust he'd broken so severely. It seemed like an eternity ago. All he could do now was strive to live up to who he could be, and who Misty wanted him to be.
Seeing his bracelet on her wrist, he cocks his head. "Guess a bloke really can have third chances, huh?"
He reaches out and pulls Misty roughly to him, gazing down into her eyes. "One for the road." Leaning in he gives her one last kiss before he has to leave. But he just doesn't want to let go.
Rick comes into the room, his eyes down on paperwork he picked up on his way back into the office. Looking up, he spots Misty and Carson, and he lets out a groan. "You know... I hated it when you two were at odds... but I forgot it would be like this again if you got back together."
Carson's laugh breaks up the kiss and he hugs Misty tightly. "Say what you want, Doc - you're not gonna scare me away."
Rick can't help his grin as he returns to his work. "Good."
Carson finally knows he has to pull away. Giving Misty's cheek a brush with his hand, he backs off. "See you soon."
Letting her go, he turns and heads out of the infirmary, heading downstairs. It was down to business.
Arriving downstairs, he meets up with Jason and Katie. "Alright you two. Let's load up. Hal's gonna drive us, and we're all set." He looks down at the table, seeing the IDs. "Mm... nice work. Oh, and by the way, Reese has been busy all day getting our contact for when we get to Australia. His name is Ryder and he's gonna be our 'tour guide.'"
Hal comes around the corner, keys in hand. "Ready?"
Jason looks to Katie then Carson, then back to Hal. "Ready."
Laura glances down at her watch. "Oh, shoot." She was late. She was supposed to meet Nate for their special supper and she'd lost track of time. He'd already left hours ago.
Quickly shutting down her computer, she makes fast work of getting out of TJY for the night. She wanted to stay and find out more about Jason and Katie's mission, but maybe she could just forget about work for a while and relax. At the very least, Nate could always make her smile.
Getting home, she finds a nice blouse and slacks, takes a quick shower, and is out the door again. She knew the restaurant she was supposed to meet Nate at, and within fifteen minutes, she was there. Parking her car, she goes inside and looks around, not knowing if he was there yet or not.
Huckabes
Sitting in her car and looking over to the right at Kyle Alice lets out a long content sigh. Today had ment to have been work for her but it ended up being a day full of fun.
Giving a smile and a pat to the bear next to her a small giggle escapes her lips.
"Dont worry Huckabe is strapped in and the air bag is on. He will make it home in once peace. With any luck to my dog will leave him alone."
Looking back to Kyle again Alice smile is still on her face. Never through out the day had it left. Some might thing it was painted there just something that ment nothing but for those who cared to look and see the changing emotions in her eyes and the forms in witch the smile took they would see that there really was feeling and that the smiles were real and ment so much more.
"I'll be at the concert you can count on that. Dont forget to let me know when the bus pulls out as well so I can clam my spot behind it."
Giving one last smile and a pat to Kyle's hand Alice nods and turns to the bear.
"Alright Huckabe its time to go home and get you settled."
And with that Alice pulls away from the side of the road heading for home. Giving one last glance in her mirror at Kyle a softer less hyper smile forms on her lips.
"Thank you."
She whispers.
Her bags sitting next to her packed and ready to go Katie looks down at the table as she lays out three IDs than she looks up at Dalton with a smile.
"Hulk I told you not to worry about Jason and I's."
Dalton looks down at Katie with a smug look.
"Kitkat I wanted to do it, Jason and yourself look totally differnt now than you did back than. I didnt want to run the chanse of having any issues. Carson's is there all set and ready too."
Stopping for a moment Dalton finally sinks down in a chair new to Katie a worry in his eye.
"Are you guys sure following Carson's orders is a good thing? I mean can you trust him?"
Looking at her Hulk of a friend Katie can see the worry in his eye and lays a hand on his arm.
"I know you dont know Carson like we do, but he has changed and is a good guy. It took him a while to get there but I know we can trust him. It's gonna be ok."
Giving a nod Dalton stands. He hadnet said it but one of his favorite people here was Katie and if anything was to happend to her he would not be happy.
Turning Dalton heads out of the room and back upstairs passing Jason on the way.
"Make sure you take care of her while your away."
Continuing his root he leaves the basment.
For a moment Misty closes her eyes as Carson holds her. She was gonna miss him and knowing the danger she could only hope he would be safe. Opening her eyes and looking into his a sassy grin forms on her face.
"Ok I guess I'll leave some for you and as for staying out of trouble. I'll try my best."
Giving Carson a kiss on the lips Misty pulls away. Before Carson left she had something for him, it was something she new ment alot but it was also held a new meaning too. Opening her desk draw she pulls out an item keeping it in her hand tightly. Standing she leans aganst her desk just looking at Carson for a moment.
"I have something for you, so you can remember whats waiting for you at home and you know to be safe. If things get to dangerous I want you to see this and pull out."
Holding her hand out and opening it Misty reveals her locket that she had once givin to Carson. Opening it up the one side reveals the picture that had always been in there of a yougerself and on the otherside held a new one. This picture had been on of Misty and Carson standing under a tree there heads close together just looking into eachother eyes. From the scene in the background one could tell it had been taken a few years back at the Mitts famil picnic.
"Its something old that held meaning, yet on the inside there is something new showing a change and that we are starting again. New relationship, new picture."
Holding it out for Carson a glittering was easy to spot on Misty's wrist. For Carson name plate had found its way back there.
Out of the office
Kyle grins as they step off the ride and amble towards more activity. With Alice's arm up behind him, he drops his shoulder so he can have his own arm on top, slinging it around both her shoulders. "You are a fascinating woman, Miss Whitt. Crazy... but fascinating nonetheless."
Tightening his grip, he starts to drag her towards a nearby game stand. "No fun house because then you'd hear me scream like a little girl too, and that's just not right."
Suddenly he switches directions, making Alice stumble, but holding her upright to continue dragging her. "Oh look! Popcorn! First food. Then game. Can't play straight on an empty stomach."
Sometimes on a cloudy day, the sun breaks through. And perhaps it takes the form of a simple smile... a crisp and honest laugh... a word that touches the heart... or eyes that seem to share the world. No matter the form, the light casts away the shadows, even if only temporarily. But for a few moments when that warmth is revealed, hope can be born. There were good days. There was still joy. Harder to find, perhaps... but it was there.
"Thanks, Alice." Kyle leans on the open window of her jeep, the setting sun behind him. His truck was still on the side of the road untouched throughout the day. He'd talked to no one else during the day, just letting himself have fun. And it had been. Dark clouds still lay behind his eyes, but for a short time, there had been some sunshine. And now with the real sun sinking below the horizon, it was time to part.
Kyle glances to the passenger seat where he'd buckled in the big stuffed panda bear he'd won at one of the fair games. "Make sure the passenger airbag is on," he quips. "We don't want any sudden stops to be the death of Mr. Bear."
Pausing, he looks back to Alice, sincerity in his eyes and voice. "I needed the distraction today. I'm sorry again for yelling this morning though... I'm glad you don't break easily."
He grins again. "I'll see you around. Concert in a couple days... it'll be the last, so be there."
Straightening, he taps his palm on her door. "Don't get lost on the way home."
After a little sigh, Kyle ambles back over to his truck, ready to head home for the day... or maybe the lake first.
"Aw man. Well... take care of yourself." Phil paces his living room while talking to Jason on the phone. All he knew was that Jason would be out of town, and probably wouldn't make it to the next JetStream concert. "What do you want us to do about the gig?"
"I don't know. You guys decide. I think you should go ahead." Jason leans back in his chair, one hand lazily scratching Trooper behind the ears. "Have Kyle sing or something."
"And you're okay with that?"
"We don't have much of a choice, do we? No... it's fine. I'm not mad at him, just... I don't know. You guys decide the best way to move on. The audience will love it no matter what. I got a job to do, and we all agreed whenever this happened that you guys would just keep going without me."
"Alright. We'll manage one way or the other. If Kyle doesn't want to sing lead, maybe we'll ask Rocky."
"That might work. I'll make sure someone here keeps one of you informed if anything happens... otherwise... hang tight and I'll see you when I see ya."
"Sounds good. Thanks, Jase."
"Yeah, bye." Hanging up, Jason sighs, his hand still on Trooper.
Concerts are my times to wind down. Hate missing one. Oh well. This is more important.
Deep down, there was a small, unwanted feeling that he was being pushed to the side. He knew it wasn't true in the least. But... with the way things were going with Kyle... and having Kyle take over while he was gone... it just felt... strange. A month prior, if they'd said Kyle would sing lead, Jason wouldn't have thought much of it. But after what had happened... after realizing Kyle's true potential and capabilities... Jason couldn't help but feel the competitive tension.
Finally getting up, Jason wanders out to the main floor and hangs over Wyatt's cubicle. "Yo... take care of Trooper for me?"
Wyatt rolls his eyes. "Great. But he stays at your house."
"Deal. You'll just have to take him there tonight then. Leave him in the back yard if you want, I don't care. He'll survive."
Though knowing the dog never minded him, Wyatt wasn't as against taking care of Trooper as he acted. It was just something to complain to Jason about. "I'll take care of him. Just get back here in one piece, will ya?"
Jason grins. "Sure thing. Thanks." Moving away, he looked at his watch. They'd been able to secure their flights sooner than planned. Things had fallen into place smoother than they'd thought, and they'd be able to pull out shortly. Wandering back to his office, he grabs his backpack, then heads downstairs. They were getting things packed down there, and would be driven to the airport in the van. He knew Katie was probably already there, set to go.
Carson heads up the hall, having just come from downstairs. He was ready. Plans were set. He was impressed with the speed at which things were going. Now they could only hope and pray that their mission was successful. But before he left, he had one last thing to do.
Getting to the infirmary, he lets himself in, and nods to Luke and Jeff. Rick had gone home for a couple hours. Carson wanders across the room to Misty's desk where she sat, coming up behind her to lay his hands on her shoulders and give them a gentle rub. "It's about that time," he mentions quietly.
Bending down, he leans far enough to drape his arms over the front of her, to give her a squeeze. Twisting his neck, he brings his face around so he could just see her eyes, and he offers a kiss to her lips. "Behave yourself while I'm gone, will ya?"
He grins. "I don't want you wasting your energy on making Rick mad. Save some for me."
Cindy grows solemn as she hears Reese's voice at the other end of the line. It was rare he called her. "Hi, Reese... how are things?"
"Oh, just fine." Reese's tone is casual. "Just thought I'd let you know Jason would be out of the office for a while. Figured he might not have time to call himself."
Out of the office. Cindy tenses. If Reese had said Jason would be out of town, she would have known he was just on some case. But out of the office meant out of the country. She swallows hard, realizing that she couldn't ask too many questions. "Well I appreciate you letting me know. Did he decide to go to the lake?"
"Not sure exactly, but he said he'd be heading by that way, yes."
Cindy swallows hard. Jason was going overseas somewhere, and she couldn't ask where or why.
Reese doesn't let the pause linger too long. "I'll make sure he calls you as soon as he's back so he can tell you all about it."
"Okay. Thank you."
"No worries."
Cindy hangs up the phone and leans back against the kitchen counter, closing her eyes to lift up a silent prayer. It had been a while since she'd felt this kind of concern for her son. Reese wouldn't have called if it was a quick job, or one with few dangers. He only let her know these things if there was a chance for worse news so the shock wouldn't be as great. "God, please keep Jason safe, and whoever else is involved, too." More than likely, Katie was involved as well.
A quiet tear escapes to run down her cheek and she quickly wipes it away and turns back to the sink full of dishes. Keeping her mind occupied was the best way not to worry.
Scream like a girl
Alice can't help but bust out laughing once again herself as well ignoring the shouting from below. Claping her hands together and than bringing them to her face as if in shock by what Kyle said she couldnt hold off the smile that grew and that laughing that followed.
"I don't think your the only crazed human out there...I do believe when people find out what I am doing they are going to think I am crazed as well. But ya wanna know what, I think I like it that way more than anything."
Turning as Kyle ploped down next to her she cant help but laugh again at the mention of the sugar.
"Now you see why I only eat half of mine? I think we both stood up in this old thing it might break."
As the ride stops at the bottom and they both get nasty looks Alice just smiles to the ride attendent. Throwing her arm around Kyle again as they slowly walk again.
"So...I say we play some games now and see if I can kick your butt or we go into the hunter fun hours and you can watch me scream like a little girl."
Life, full of twists and turns, full adventures just waiting to happen around the bend. Life, it had its up and it had its down, but always there would be someone there to help you though, someone you didnt exspect. Life, friendship it comes in all shapes and sizes to mold to your life and change it.
2/16/09
W's
Alice's continued interest only makes Kyle bewildered yet again. Why she had this desire to do a story on him, he would never know. Part of him wanted to argue and tell her to stop making a big deal out of someone as common as he. But deep down... tucked away... he would quietly admit to himself that someone's honest attention did feel a little good.
Her arm going around his shoulders makes his eyebrows rise, and he turns his face to her with question. Despite her laugh, for just a moment, Kyle sees something beyond the surface humor. There was something more there... something deep and hidden that might only come out a glimpse at a time, but it showed the strength within. If God was leading her, who was Kyle to stand in the way?
Receiving Alice's comment and point to his forehead, a laugh escapes and he reaches out to grab her finger to push it away. "What? You mean like this?" He furrows his brow to force an angry stare.
Leaning in closer to her face, another laugh comes. Standing abruptly, he makes the carriage wobble, and ignores the hollers from below to sit down. "I can make people laugh with a line I don't even have to say!" he shouts at the top of his lungs.
He balances himself despite the rocking motion and throws both hands in the air. "Look out world - Kyle Mitts is on the loose with his trusty sidekick Alice." He lowers his voice to a booming announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, do not be alarmed. It is only one crazed human being, and they are kept moderately under control by the witty written words of Whitt, the whistling woman."
Suddenly realizing the absurdity of what just came out of his mouth, Kyle blinks and flops back down in the seat. "Well. Now. That was exciting." He swings his head around to look at Alice again. "Nothing like a little pepper to stir things up. I do believe I feel invigorated. Or perhaps it's the sugar that has finally hit my system from that cotton candy I had."
Or maybe, just maybe, it was knowing that someone he felt like he'd known all his life would be tagging along on his new adventure.
Line
Alice gives a nod that is followed by a chuckle at Kyle's comment about her being a spice. Its silly quirky side was funny and refreshing that was for sure and it matched her own.
"I do believe you did call me a spice, but I'd rather be that than...."
Drawing silent Alice things for a moment.
"...a lime."
Alice scrunches up her noise and than gives a laugh as her eyes sparkle. As Kyle continues to talk and tell about where he was going and what he was doing Alice gives a nod of her head. This WAS going to be interesting, and maybe even a little fun not to mention something else unspoken felt right about it.
"You know Kyle, I think I will follow you and drive around behind that bus. I think it would be grand fun not to mention I really do want to continue my story on you. Just something about you Kyle. Not only am I intrested in you but I feel...like this is right like something tells me this is what I am ment to do. Maybe its God showing the path I should take."
Giving a smile Alice gives a thoughtful nod. Wraping her arm around Kyle's shoulder another laugh escapes her lips as she draws him closer and for a moment Alice is throw back to a time when her best friend and her had shaired moment likes these. God takes lifes, and he gives them. Knowing exacly what we need when we need it. Coming back she cant help but smile big again her arm still around Kyle.
"But you got to promise me not to yell at me anymore because when you do you have this line right here..."
Alice takes her free hand and points to Kyle forhead.
"...and for some reason it hits my funny bone and I would hate to laugh at you if your trying to be real with me."
Won't stop you
Kyle's eyes widen slightly and he looks quickly to Alice as she speaks. He barely notices the ride is moving again as he just studies her eyes as if determined to find something.
"You really are interested in my story, aren't you?" His look turns to one of almost confusion as to why on earth she really would be, but also one of realization that it was in fact, true.
He shifts his weight so he can sit more at an angle, almost facing Alice. "You're not improper in my book, though you are bold. It's like throwing some pepper on bland food. Makes you go "wow" but it's a good thing."
Stopping, Kyle laughs and shakes a head at his stupid comment. "I think I just called you a spice."
Trying to recover, he takes a deep breath. "Well, Alice Whitt... I'm not going to ask you to go because then I'd be the one feeling improper. But I won't stop you if you want to go, and I won't tell you no. Thing is..."
He hesitates. "Nobody knows this yet, so I'm just gonna ask you not to say anything to anybody. But I got a friend who's part of "Break Out," the karate team that travels around and does sessions for kids on making the right choices, don't do drugs, that sort of thing. He, um... he's asked me to join their next tour. They're leaving in a few weeks... it'll be a team of eight people and we'll be traveling by bus."
Saying it aloud for the first time, it almost surprises even Kyle. "No music... no family... no hometown... something totally different.... something that will get me away from my pipedreams and get my feet back on the ground."
Looking off in the distance, Kyle is quiet for a moment before turning back to Alice with a crooked grin. "So I guess if you're bound and determined to write about me, and you don't mind driving your car behind a bus the whole time - I won't stop you."
2 questions
Giving a nod Katie sits down at the table with Carson and Jason keeping her attachen on the task at hand.
"I can get the ID's together. I can go talk to Dalton about getting you one. I still have my old one and I am sure Jason has his as well."
Continuing to listen Katie gives a nods here and there to show she is understanding and gets everything that Carson is saying. This had to work, and though she admitted she was a tiny bit nervous about getting so close to the agency at the same time she was excited as she adrenalin pumped.
Thinking for a long moment Alice finally looks at Kyle and cocks her head.
"Well...I could say one of two things, but I am not sure what one would be more appropriate without scaring you away. I could always ask to go with you, so I can keep doing reports because I think you ARE in fact an intestine person with many stores still to tell, but I am not sure that is probler of me even though I'd like to."
Leading the silence for a moment Alice looks out at the scenery again as the fairs wheel slowly jerks forward before she speaks again.
"So, I guess I will just leave it at this if you ask me to come alone with you I would be delighted and I think it would be fun, it would give me a few good story's to write and give me a good boost. But if you don't ask me Kyle Mitts, I'll be waiting here so when you return, you can find me and I can talk to you again."
Alice gives Kyle a smile. Not only had she found someone she liked talking to and found so interesting but in a short time she had also found a friend that she felt like she had known for years.
Maybe it's time
Jason returns Katie's hug, giving her an extra squeeze before she backs away.
Nope... I'll always be sorry for hurting you, no matter if I ever see it's not my fault or not... only 'cause I love you.
Carson laughs at Katie's comment. "You, winning? If that's the case, it's only because I'm such a good teacher."
Jason smirks. "So while I'm in there duking it out, you two are here playing games. Nice."
"Hey, I'm not the one who started it." Carson moves to a nearby table, gesturing for Jason and Katie to sit with him. He has a notepad with him, and is ready to form his plan.
"Alright... we're gonna high tail it out of here tonight. We'll catch a couple planes then get across the ocean. It's gonna be one long trip, so be prepared to try and stay awake once we get there. We don't have time for jetlag."
Jason kicks Katie under the table. "She can keep us awake. She's good at bugging people."
Not missing a beat, Carson nods. "This I know." He jots down some notes. "Once we land in Australia, we're going to meet up with an ally there. I don't know anyone myself who's on the good guy's side, so Reese is finding us someone we can trust. We'll need him to help watch our back and keep us up to date with what's happening around us. Once we settle in, we'll head out for where I know the Agency base is. We'll wind up hiking on foot for a good day or so in order to maintain as low a profile as possible. Once there..."
Carson looks up and gives a little shrug. "Who knows. But I chose the two of you because we might need your teamwork, whether it's to scare the bajeebers out of somebody, or be able to communicate without them knowing it."
Jason sits back and sighs. "Well... looks like that's about as much planning as we can do. Do we know how long this is gonna take?"
"Nope. We won't know much until we get there. I'd send a scout ahead, but we don't have time for that. We have to go straight in ourselves." Carson looks at Jason, then at Katie. "We need to gather up some firearms, settle on some fake IDs and get everything else we need packed... and do it all in the next few hours. Are you two with me?"
Kyle is silent for several minutes. One might think he hadn't heard Alice at all. But he finally answers her. "I'm pulling out." His eyes drift the countryside instead of looking at her. "There's two concerts coming up... one for JetStream and one for Cryptic, I'm sure you've seen the ads. I'll be there for both. But after that... I'll be leaving town. You... won't get much of a story on me then I guess, so I apologize. But... I've got an invitation and... maybe it's time for me to move on and leave this dream behind."
Brush off
Continuing the game Katie trys to keep up with the game and what was going on though in mid shot she stops as Carson goes over to the door. Seeing Jason emerge and getting his apology Katie just shakes her head.
I'm never gonna get you to stop saying sorry am I?
Stepping closer to Jason Katie brings her arms around him in a nice tight comforting hug.
I love ya J no matter what.
Stepping back again Katie turns and smiles at Carson a teasing tone in her voice.
"Oh so your gonna just brush off our game like that. Does that mean your losing."
Sticking out her toung just a little Kaite gives a small laugh and puts her pool stick down knowing it really was time to get to work.
"Ok, I guess we can finish some other time. We have people to save."
Sitting back in the farris wheel seat once again Alice just watches Kyle for a moment. How sad he was and how he really did care for his friends. That in itself should make him not cast blame on himself. Taking in her own deep breath of air Alice smiles though her eyes held a searouseness for what Kyle was saying too.
"What are you gonna do Kyle?"
Ceasefire
"Solid, huh?" Carson gives Katie a wink. "I wouldn't expect any less of you." Surveying the table and leaning down to aim, the game continues.
Despite the banter, Carson keeps a close eye on Katie, and tries to keep the pool game going, creating enough havoc on the table to keep anyone on their toes, whether in the game or in the conversation. His own nerves rose and dropped and he knew it was because of Katie, able to tell now when she was getting more nervous and when he'd succeeded in calming her down.
Austin looks down at the floor, his tone suddenly dropping. "Maybe too many times."
Worn out and tired of fighting, Jason flops down in a chair across the table from Austin. "I'm not a kid anymore, Austin. Not only can you no longer control me, but I can see through your mask of care. It's just not true. You have a cold heart, and I don't know why."
Austin leans forward to rest his elbows on the table and put his face in his hands. "Maybe you're right. I just... one thing after another and... I didn't know how to stop it."
"Why don't you try being nice for once? And looking around and seeing the people you're affecting? Do you realize how much hurt you've caused since you've been back?"
"Look, I'm sorry about the prison thing. I meant to tell you, but there was too much danger and..."
"I'm not talking about me. Look at people like Scott."
"I was only following protocol."
"But he's human, Austin! He's a man with a heart. A beaten, scared, man too. Can you not see that anymore? I've heard stories about you from people in Texas... about when you used to care... when you used to see people and have compassion. You had it with me once. Where did that go?"
Austin suddenly stands up and starts to pace. Finally he just stops in the corner. "I'm sorry, Jason."
Jason didn't expect himself to release his anger, but something in his grandfather's broken tone started to chip away at his ire. "For what?"
"For not being the grandfather I should have been. For getting you involved in TJY too early. For not telling you the truth about things. For letting you grow up too fast against your mother's wishes."
Jason flexes his jaw muscles. He didn't want to forgive, but it started to seep through anyway. He'd never seen Austin quite like this before. "You should be apologizing to everyone else. I don't care what you've done to me. But I care what you did to the people you fired... to the people you put in mental anguish."
Austin sighs and looks up at him. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm not needed around here anymore."
"Not if you keep acting like you have been."
"And if I don't? If I changed?"
Jason shrugs. "Then trust will not be easily gained back." All of a sudden, he realizes that his anger towards Austin is gone. He was still hurt. He was still a bit confused. But the anger... the hate... it was gone. He'd said his piece. He'd spoken what was on his mind, and it had been released. "Reese is in command now... and as far as everyone here is concerned, he's going to stay that way. You're the one that walked out - don't forget that."
Carson looks up, suddenly realizing the room had gone quiet. "Hey... either we have a ceasefire or somebody is dead." He straightens. "Yo, Jase... what's happening, buddy?"
Jason hears Carson and sighs. "Open the door, Carson."
"You ready to get to work?"
"Yeah... I'm ready."
"You sure?"
"Carson! Open it or I blow it to bits!"
Carson grins at Katie. "Excitable bloke. How do you keep him under control?" He wanders to the door and unlocks it. As he opens it, it tilts a bit, having lost its top hinge. He looks up at it and shakes his head. "Better get Hal down here to fix this. He still works here, right?"
"Yeah." Jason exits the room, hot and tired, and willing to admit only to himself that Carson's little maneuver had been a good one. He'd finally reached the bottom of his emotional reservoir. Moving closer to Katie, he stops and just sighs, looking at her wearily.
I know, I know... I don't need to apologize... but sorry anyway. At least now we should be good for a while. Maybe I needed that more than I thought I did... Telling Austin how I really felt, that is.
Carson looks in at Austin who hadn't moved. "You taking up residence?"
Austin shakes his head slowly and finally stands up. "No... no, I'll be leaving now. Just do me one favor?"
"What's that?"
"Make sure someone lets me know how Angel is?"
Carson gives him a nod. "I will." He watches Austin leave, then finally turns back to Jason and Katie. "Are we ready to form a plan now or what? We've already wasted enough time."
Kyle sits relaxed atop the ferris wheel as riders below were let off and on. "I wish I could see problems the way you do," he muses. "Ya know... I don't really worry about what other people think of me or what I do... but I worry about the consequences of my own decisions. If someone gets mad at me for my own choices, so be it. But if I make a choice that will obviously cut off my relationship with somebody else... then I do think I'm the one to blame."
He sucks in the cool afternoon air. "I've made up my mind, Alice... I've made up my mind."
