Sitting on the swing with her back to the road Thirteen gently rocks herself back and forth. The noises around her made her jump, and she felt scared but she had no where else to go. Tear still rolled down her cheeks as she sat and thought.
Feeling her tummy rumble Thirteen can guess its lunch time now. She couldn't help but wonder if Ryder had checked and saw if she was gone now or not.
She new she should go back, but she didn't want to be inside and she didn't want to be treated like a no one anymore. She had spend 22 years of her life locked away like a caged animal. Now Ryder had started to show her life outside that, and now they wanted to take it away from her again and keep her locked up again. It wasn't fair, and Ryder taught her it wasnt right eather.
Thnder rumbled in the distance as a storm started to roll in as the sky started to grow darker.
Looking up as Dani enter again Dalton took note to her puffy eyes, and the redness but didnt draw attachen to them. She still looked so pretty.
Standing from his desk and turning the moniter off, Dalton gives a small smile.
"Well I am happy they wont be doing anything to you. I'd hate to be left hanging for lunch."
Placing his sun glasses on and than walking over to Dani he holds his arm out for her to take a hold gentily.
"Now my lady, where would you like to go to relax and just have a nice time?"
Dalton helps escort Dani out of TJY not minding who was looking, or whispering.
Looking up from her desk as Ryder came to a skidding halt Sapphire thinks for a long moment.
"I was wrapped up in my work so I didnt see anyone but about three hours ago I thought I saw someone go up on the elevator. I am not sure if it was Thirteen or now."
Sapphire shows a look of sarrow on her face as she looks up at Ryder.
"Sorry I dont know more. Did you need help with getting her?"
7/26/09
My lady
Empty
Dani can't help her smile and she looks down, now just a little embarrassed. "Um... okay. I'll go talk to Reese and... I'll come back then."
Looking up at Dalton one more time, her eyes are dry now. For some reason, she wasn't quite as worried.
The morning seems to go by so slowly, but only because unwanted work is involved. It really doesn't take all that long for Dani to talk to Reese and for Ryder to busy himself with unimportant tasks.
Dani comes slowly down the hall again, her eyes red and puffy from more tears that she had cried. But it was over now.
She lightly taps on Dalton's open office door and steps inside just a little hesitantly. She had tried to look a little better but it wouldn't do much good. It would be obvious to anyone that she'd been crying, and her hair was a mess and she didn't have any makeup on.
"I... they're not going to do anything to me," she mentions quietly. "I mean... for helping Alec. Reese said since I didn't have mal-intent that it would be okay but... I guess I learned my lesson."
Swallowing, she looks back up at Dalton and bites her lip. "If... you still want to go to lunch? I should get to Mom and Pop's afterward... no use in making Carson any more mad at me than he is already. But I really just want to sit and relax somewhere first and i guess I am kind of hungry."
Ryder looks at the clock and sighs. He'd stayed away from the spare room for the last few hours, even though he hadn't wanted to. It felt like tough love, but it didn't feel right since it wasn't intentional.
Stopping by the break room, he checks to see that there are some sandwiches and pop still there. He would bring Thirteen in here to eat lunch with him at least.
Ambling to the spare room, he taps on the door. "Thirteen?" No response. Frowning, he hopes she wasn't still upset with him. After another try, he finally just opens the door. To his surprise, the room is empty. "Thirteen?"
A strange feeling settled over Ryder as he backs out of the room and looks down the hall. He tries the bathroom, but finds it empty. He checks the empty offices, goes downstairs and even checks on Alec. But no matter where he goes, Thirteen is no where to be found. Surely she wouldn't have gone outside. She was still so scared But... where else...
His walk turns into a run. Skidding by Sapphire's cubicle, he stops. "You seen Thirteen anywhere?"
Leave
Being left there alone now Thirteen was scared and confused. Though Ryder looked sorry and said his hands were tied, why was there a change now? Thirteen still couldnt help but think she did something wrong.
Just standing in the middle of the room Thirteen could feel the hot tears that rolled down her cheek. Why was she so upset?
No, she didn't want to be here in this room. Outside, she didn't mind it there now, and it was obvious she wasn't wanted here anymore or thats how it felt.
Grabbing what little she had Thirteen opens the door and pokes her head out looking around. Not seeing anyone she slowly and quietly slips out of TJY aiming for the door and leaving through the elevator. Her destination the closes park.
A more assured smile spreads on Dalton's face and he cant help but laugh himself just a little. He new he made an idiot of himself but he was happy it had not scaired Dani away.
"Ok, when you are done just come back to the office and I'll take you to lunch."
Dalton's large hand makes its way down Dani's face and to her arm. Who ever though such a large man could be so soft and gentil.
"I'll take you anywhere you want to go, it dosnt matter."
A small light shone in Dalton's eye though he was also so scaired. He'd never really asked a girl on a date before. But he was sure it would be ok.
If
Thirteen's voice and tears cut Ryder to the quick. He knew that even though he wasn't meaning to, that Thirteen was taking his actions like a cold shoulder. He hadn't wanted it this way. But Reese had been firm, and that, mixed with a bit of guilt, resulted in this necessary decision.
"I'm sorry..." His voice softens. Reaching out, he pulls Thirteen a little closer, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I just... it has to be this way. Please try to understand... for me? I... I'm sorry."
His eyes search hers, trying to convey what was going on. How could he tell her that this was out of his hands? How could he tell her that he was sorry for earlier... that Reese was right - he shouldn't have taken her to Jason's? How could he tell her that he knew he shouldn't have kissed her? He was on duty... this was his job. He needed to respect the rules... not only for his job's sake, but for her sake as well. It wasn't right that he was the only thing in her life... she needed more.
"I'm sorry," he repeats again. "I'll be in my cubicle and I'll see you for lunch."
Dani's stomach gives a little lurch as Dalton's hand runs down her face. She swallows hard and can feel the heat replacing the tears.
Hearing what he has to say, she blinks and straightens just a little, confused for a moment. "I..." Letting him finish, her eyebrows rise. Suddenly she wasn't worried about the trouble she was in, but rather she wanted to understand just what Dalton was saying.
Before she can stop it, a little giggle breaks through. She didn't mean to make fun of him in the least. But hearing him fumbling around his words hit her as cute and even charming in a way that she couldn't help the giggle.
"Yes." The reply was out before she could think. "If... if I'm not in to much trouble here."
Gutter Flower
Looking up at Ryder now in the room she hated again her lip trembled just a little. She could feel the change with him now and she wasn't sure why. Only hours ago she had gotten a completely different feeling from him and now it almost seemed cold.
"But Ryder, I...I don't want to stay here. I promise I wont make trouble and I will be super quiet."
Thirteen trys to hold her little tears back. She was trying she really was, had she dont something wrong?
"I've been good Ryder and haven't gotten scared when we have been out. Please don't make me stay here."
Begging was not something Thirteen wanted to do and she didn't want to make Ryder feel bad but she just didn't understand and it almost hurt that Ryder seemed so cold now.
Giving a nod a small smile makes its way on Dalton's face. A gentil hand running down the side of Dani's face. She did something to him, and he felt so open around her.
"Yes, really."
He ment what he said and he new it made Dani feel good and thats what mattered. Making such a pretty flower shine and bloom was something that should happen more in the dark world.
"You Dani Bank's are what I call a gutter flower."
Stoping for a moment he almost cringers before he continues.
"I know that sounds horrable but....Your so beautiful and have been delt such a crappy hand. If I could pick you and take you some place better, where would you want me to take you?"
Cringing again Dalton shakes his head.
"Dani can I take you on a date is what I mean? I think..."
Really?
Trooper gives a little growl to show he's displeased with the tension in the air, but a look from Ryder warns him to stand down.
Hal glances at the dog warily, already having made a mental note not to act as a threat towards Thirteen. He turns, leaving to wait for the other two.
Ryder's fingers have curled around Thirteen's hand automatically, and he waits until Hal is gone to turn to her. There was an apology in his eyes... but not just for the intrusion. His face shows he's just about to say something, then changes his mind. "Come on," he prompts gently. "It'll be okay. We gotta go back for a little while at least."
After picking up the living room, making sure Trooper was set for the day and gathering anything they'd brought, Ryder leads Thirteen outside and in the car. Pulling from the driveway, he checks his rearview mirror to see that Hal was close behind...
"Alright, wait here just a few minutes, okay?" Ryder makes sure that Thirteen is sitting in Susanne's extra chair before approaching Reese's office. He wasn't looking forward to this, and he didn't want Thirteen to have to be there either.
It is only moments before Ryder is in the next office with the door closed behind him as he sits down across from Reese. The conversation is tense and to the point.
"Not only was it against protocol, against my orders and stupid, it was inappropriate!" Already upset from all the other events, Reese throws his arms in the air. "You took her to Jason's house! Have you no sense left in your head?!"
"I didn't act inappropriately!" Ryder defends, though his face reddens slightly.
Reese quirks an eyebrow, already picking up on a vibe that was awfully close to guilt. "Oh, really?"
Ten minutes later, the door opens again and Ryder comes back into Susanne's office. Gesturing to Thirteen, he offers the best smile he can and takes her by the hand to quietly lead her back across the main floor, down the hall and to the spare room. Once there, the door stays open and he turns Thirteen so she can see his face.
"I'm not in all that much trouble," he reassures. He knew that had been a fear of hers. But something is different. Something in his tone isn't quite as warm. Something has changed.
"You're gonna have to stay here," he tells her pretty flatly. "I'm sorry. But Reese won't have it any other way and... it's probably best. He's probably right. So... tell me what you need to get through the day and night and... I'll get it for you. Then I have other work I need to do."
Dani sniffs again, and is a little surprised at Dalton's gentleness and the offer of a tissue. With such a horrible morning, for a moment she felt a little warm again.
His comment catches her off guard and she looks up quickly. "Really?" She swallows and sniffs one more time. "I mean... I have?"
Old Hulk
Ryan rolls her own eyes at Leo as she gives a chuckle. She felt back that Leo was always the one getting picked on but she also had to admit it was kind of funny.
"I am sure its not broken you big wuss, you just might lose a nail or something. So no gold shoes to match the shorts, and tank top tonight ok?"
Giving another grin Ryan turns again and pops the hood on her car to start working on it before they all got in trouble when the boss showed up.
Feeling Ryder's hand on her chin Thirteen looks up at him again. Seeing him lean in a little closer Thirteen continues to watch Ryder's eyes searching, and wondering about his intent. Her own eyes almost go wide as she new what would happen next. A panic ran over her but not because she was scaired but because she didnt know what to do, or how to react.
Quickly trying to calm herself and think images pass in her mind of the differnt books she read but as she feels Ryder's breath on her face as was lost, and feeling his soft gentil lips on her own Thirteen closes her own eyes intisapating the next moment as she almost felt like melting.
But the moment was shattered as the male voice eckos through the house. Jumping Thirteen can feeling herself tense once again and start to shiver just a little she slips her hand into Ryder's for his reasurance that everything would be ok.
Feeling sorry for Dani, Dalton's face held a softer look. He had hurd what happend, and that Dani might have been the reason for Alec's escape but he also tryed to have an understanding.
"We all lean sometimes that not everyone can be trusted. Family or not. You thought you were doing good, and thats a good thing. But next time you just have to think better ya know?"
Dalton gives a small sigh as he looks down at Dani. He hated seeing anyone cry let alone a woman. It just broke his heart.
"People will be mad, but we have Alec again so they will get over it."
Pulling a tissue from his pocket his large hands almost hide it was he softlys trys to whip Dani's tears away. Thinking for a moment before talking again. It wasnt often he showed a soft side, but maybe this was just another crack in his hard shell.
"I'm awfully glad you come around. You always walk past my office and though I dont always say something. You've given this old Hulk something to smile about."
Toe
Leo laughs and slides off the hood with a dramatic bow. "Your wish is my command!"
Spinning around, he runs right into Ron, who promptly drops his toolbox on impact. A howl is let loose from Leo's mouth and he grabs at his foot that the toolbox landed on. "Ohhhh, I'm in pain!"
Ron doesn't have much sympathy for him, and starts to pick up the tools. "The rest of us are in pain from listening to you two flirt with each other since you got here too. Serves you right for not paying attention."
"Hey, but I-"
"Now now, children," Axel chides teasingly from his car. "Play nice."
"I can't play at all now," Leo complains, rubbing his foot through his tennis shoe. "I think I broke a toe."
"You big wuss." Ron rolls his eyes. "Work. Car. Darrell will be here any minute."
Receiving the kiss to the cheek, Ryder's mouth curls into a smile. He saw Thirteen's cheeks flush and knew that she was probably a little embarrassed, not sure what to do.
"You're welcome," comes his whispered response. He reaches down to tilt her chin up again and leans close, watching Thirteen's eyes to ensure he wasn't scaring her. Cocking his head just a little his lips barely brush against hers-
"Ryder!"
Ryder shoots up and whips around to the stern voice coming from around the corner at the door. "What the-"
Trooper hadn't even barked. The dog knew the vehicle and the familiar scent of Hal.
"Do you have any idea how much trouble you're in?" Hal's voice rolls into the kitchen before he appears, a frown on his face.
Ryder sighs and throws up his hands. "I can take a guess. How long did it take you to find me?"
"Not long after we realized this morning that the girl was gone. Jason knew where you were."
Ryder rolls his eyes. "Great. Reese ready to kill me?"
"No, he's got his hands full of Dani Banks at the moment. Sounds like she's the one who let Alec loose - you were right. He's got her down there now, but I can't go back without you."
"Well what am I supposed to do with Thirteen now, huh? We can't just keep her at TJY the rest of her life, and she doesn't deserve prison."
"You're gonna have to talk to Reese about it," Hal warns. "Not me. I'm sorry." He gives Thirteen a gentler glance, not wanting to scare her any more than he probably already had. "Both of you need to get ready to go. I'll follow you in."
Dani whips around, startled by Dalton. She has to look up to see his face, and her own grows hot. "Yes... yes I'm fine... I mean no... I..."
She sniffs again, as another several tears escape to trickle down her face. Her head is lowered again. "I'm in trouble and... and I didn't meant to... I didn't know.... but now Carson's mad and I have to talk to Reese and... and.... I should just stay away from here... I shouldn't ever have come."
Her voice trembles as she talks, almost in a whimper. "I didn't know Alec was lying to me... I just feel so.... so stupid."
Tools
Feeling her cheeks getting red Thirteen looks up into Ryder's eyes, as she tummy did flip flops again. It was a strange feeling but it didn't feel like something that should be feared.
Leaning up just a little Thirteen gives Ryder a small kiss on the cheek before retreating again and leaning back into the chair. She had only read it in books about kissing, and didn't know if she did it the right way or not but it was done.
"Thank you for everything."
Letting out a small sigh Thirteen looks down at her hands for a moment. She liked being around Ryder, she liked talking to him. What would she do when he was gone?
Ryan grins and shakes her head as Leo hopes up on her car.
"I get out at 6, unless someone keeps sitting on the hood of the car I need to work on!"
She cant help but give a slap to Leo's arm as she goes over to one of the doors and opens it starting the engine with a bang right underneath Leo.
"Mind grabbing my tools for me?"
Not really getting into the mold of things yet today Dalton was hardly awake but his hearing was as sharp as always. Picking up on the soft sniffles, and the scuffing of feet for a moment maybe his hearing was off today. But hearing it again he knows its really there.
Looking up from his desk he see Dani slowly walking past his office and can catch the redness of her face, and the bloodshot eyes before she lowers her gaze again.
Getting up from his desk and worried something was wrong he quickly exits the office. In a few long strides she was close enough to Dani to stop her. Gentily placing his hand on her shoulder she gently asks.
"Hey, are you ok?"
How could you
Ryder stares over Thirteen's shoulder into the mirror, the only emotion showing through a little grin at the corner of his mouth.
In response to her question, he moves around in front of her, bent low so his face is inches from hers, his hands on the chair beside her shoulders. "I think you're beautiful. And don't you ever let anyone else tell you otherwise."
Leo watches Ryan walk away and straightens up, his mouth hanging open for a minute. "But... it... I... I just..."
Inwardly kicking himself, he steps after her, getting between her and the car she was going to work on. "I didn't say I didn't want to go," he corrects. "But how many times have you told me no? You can't blame me for not believing you."
Bouncing up to sit on the hood of the car so Ryan couldn't open it yet, he looks up at her with a grin. "How could I say no to you? What time do you get off work?"
"I'm sorry!"
"Dani, how could you?!" Carson paces inside the interrogation room, his temper rising. "I thought you were smarter than that!"
"He told me he could prove he was innocent!" A tear runs down Dani's cheek. She'd barely had time to get ready for anything this morning when Carson had received a phone call of confirmation from Reese, and she'd been brought in to TJY for questioning. Alec was back in the holding cell.
"And you believed him?!" Still upset, Carson looks at his watch. "I gotta go. Aerith and Mabel are already opening up the restaurant and I can't bail on them today. You're gonna have to deal with Reese yourself."
"But Carson-"
"No! You got yourself into this mess. I can't spend my time fighting your battle. You were stupid enough to think Alec was legit, and to swallow his lies and help him escape, you can figure out how to get yourself out of this. I'll see you later."
Seeing her brother heading out the door, another tear falls from Dani's eye as her lower lip trembles. She hadn't meant to cause trouble. She'd believed Alec... she thought he was good deep down, like Carson was. She knew she shouldn't have helped him escape but he'd said he would come back in an hour with evidence.
Standing up from the table, she knew she should be grateful they hadn't locked her in here. Reese was being as nice as possible, letting her tell him when she was ready to talk. But this was still scary and she didn't know what would happen, now that she'd helped a criminal escape.
Wandering into the hall, Dani swipes at her eyes and ducks her gaze as someone passes her. She would go to Reese's office and let him know she was ready. There wasn't much to tell. He probably knew everything already. But if something was going to happen to her because of all this then... she would find out now.
Her feet scuffed on the floor as she headed to the offices on the other side of the main floor. Passing an open door, she glances up just in time to see Dalton, but she's quick to lower her eyes again. She was so ashamed and she hurt too, for upsetting her brother like she had.
Think
Taking a few steps backwards Ryan looks at Leo for a long moment almost shocked by his response. Maybe she had taken him for granted or just read him wrong.
Not sure how to respond to Leo since he said no Ryan is quiet for a few moments longer.
"Do I always have to have a punchline?"
Ryan cross her arms over her chest as a small grin was on her face. The only thing she could do was what she normally did. Never had she been in a situation like this before.
"I don't understand you Leo? You have been chasing me around for months now ever week asking me out at least once and now when I decide to finally give it a go, you don't want to?"
Shaking her head and turning to walk twords the car she would be working on today Ryan gives a heavy sigh.
"Your worse than a woman you know that Leo?"
Thirteen makes it quick getting her shower taken care of though the water felt nice and she would of liked to stay longer she new Ryder was waiting.
Once breakfast was done and Thirteen was sitting in the chair with the towel around her neck she closed her eyes and let Ryder go to work. Though she could feel herself shaking just a little Thirteen new she would be ok in Ryder's hands.
Once Ryder is finished and Thirteen opens her eyes looking at her own reflection in the mirror. Moving her head side to side to look at herself in the mirror.
"It looks good, I like it."
Looking into the mirror again Thirteen brings her hands up to Ryder's arms and moves them just a little as he makes his comment on her being pretty. Now seeing his face in the mirror Thirteen just looks at him for a long moment studying his eyes as a strange feeling enters her tummy.
"You think I'm pretty?"
Pretty young lady
Leo's concentration is on the tool bench and he lifts an eyebrow as Ryan comes up behind him. Giving her a sidelong glance, his hands stay busy wiping grease off a wrench with a rag. "Dinner? You and me?"
A little laugh surfaces. "What gives, Ryan? I keep waiting for the punchline here."
He sets down the tool and rag, then turns around to lean back against the tool bench and fold his arms across his chest. He cocks his head, studying Ryan's eyes. "I rank among the most-ignored. How come all of a sudden you want me around?" It was apparent that though he continually tried to get Ryan's attention, now that he was getting it, he didn't believe it was real.
Ryder grins as Thirteen leaves the chair, and he stretches long, yawning again. "Me, trim your hair?" He would have laughed, had he not suddenly seen a disastrous picture in his mind. Making Thirteen sit in a strange shop in a strange chair with a stranger behind her with scissors... not good. Well, he'd cut hair before. He could do it again.
"Alright. Go clean up and I'll meet you in the kitchen. Then we'll have breakfast."
A little while later, Ryder has Thirteen sitting in a kitchen chair with a towel around her neck, her hair still damp from the shower. He takes a comb and gently works through a few tangles. "Okay, here we go..."
He grabs the scissors off the counter, and studies her hair for a moment before going to work. He's silent as he clips, letting the short trimmings fall to the floor. Coming around the front of Thirteen, he bends a little and tells her to close her eyes as he trims around the edges. His thumb rests under her chin to tilt her head back as need be.
It doesn't take long before the scissors are laid aside, and he's raking his fingers through her hair instead, helping it dry the rest of the way. Finding a small mirror, he leans down from behind her and holds the mirror up in front of her face, smiling over her shoulder. "There now... who's the pretty young lady, hmm?"
Outside of Town
Squinting her eyes as she enters the shop Ryan's eyes held dark circles under them proving that she might not have gotten much sleep last night. After dropping Leo off for the night she stayed up a little later joining with a few other people she new at the bar to celebrate her victory before finally heading home and to bed as the sun came over the horizon.
Making her way to the the time clock to punch in Ryan cant help but stop and watch the men work on the cars as her eyes fall on Leo and linger there for a long moment just watching his every move.
Hearing her cell phone ring snaps her out of whatever trans she had been in.
"Whiting here...."
Ryan swipes her badge in with a beep letting her know for the day she was working.
"Yeah, tonight...I...."
Looking out at Leo once again Ryan lets out a small sigh.
"...yeah I'll be there. Alright, bye."
Putting her phone away she was a little more dishearten than before but maybe it would still work. That was if Leo wanted to come with her.
Going out to the shop bay Ryan gives a wave to everything coming up behind Leo and slinging an arm around his shoulder leaning on him.
"So, I have a little bit of cleaning up to do outside of town and well I was wondering if maybe you'd like to come Leo and keep me company. Promise I wont make you wair any short shorts or a tank top."
Ryan gives a grin as she looks at Leo, humor in her eyes, but the searous glint behind them was there.
"Maybe after we could do dinner!"
Slowly opening her eyes Thirteen almost forgets she had fallen asleep in Ryder's lap but hearing his voice brings a small smile to her face.
"Can you trim it for me?"
Looking up at Ryder she gives a smile again, but than as if relizing again where she was her cheek get a little red as she sits up.
"I'm sorry I fell asleep on you, it just....it was nice to sleep soundly and feel safe for once."
Giving a little stretch Thirteen slips gently off Ryder's lap so he can have room to move and stretch out himself.
Someone needs...
Leo just stands, watching Ryan walk away. Miles sets his hands on his hips. "Well now... looks like you finally snagged yourself a girl."
Leo watches until Ryan is out of sight in the crowd before turning his face to Miles. A grin is forced to the surface. "Heh... sure."
"You're supposed to sound happy, Stupid."
"I would be..."
"If?"
"If I thought it were true." Leo shakes his head, a laugh finally coming to light. "You know me. Angels are always out of my reach." Still grinning, he slings an arm around Miles' shoulders. "Let's go route her on, Pal. She wants to hear us."
...A win was cheered on from the sidelines as loudly as any other. Many were not surprised that Ryan had won, though many were upset over money lost.
The crowd grew rowdy and didn't disperse until late. Friends dwindled for the night, only to reunite again the next day.
"Leo! Toss me that screwdriver!" Ron flails his arm out from under the car. "Leo? Leo!"
"Huh?"
"Screwdriver!"
Leo pushes off the tool bench and scrounges for the tool before tossing it to Ron.
"What's with you?" Ron asks, just a little annoyed.
"He didn't get enough sleep last night," Axel teases from another car. "Up too late watching those things we don't talk about around here."
"Stuff a sock in it, Axel."
Axel spins around, taken totally off guard. "Whoa, easy. Sorry. You alright?"
"Yeah, fine." Leo waves him off, relaxing. "Sorry. Need help with that over there?"
"Sure."
The morning light peeked through the blinds on the windows, playing about Ryder's face. He stirs, squinting a little. Yawning, he starts to stretch, then remembers the bundle on his lap. He'd slept like a rock all night and had almost forgotten that Thirteen had joined him on the chair.
Running his fingers through her hair, he tries to wake her gently. "Someone needs a haircut," he muses quietly.
The most
Giving a smile for maybe the first time her cheaks go red as she can feel the heat up her neck. It was strange. The hardness was still there but Leo had found an unseen entrances.
Composing herself Ryan leans her head against Leo's for a moment looking into his eyes.
"Your two sweet you know that."
Pulling away she looks to Miles and rolls her eyes giving him a grin and than looking back to Leo.
"I guess I should get going if I wanna race huh? I expect to hear your voice above everyone else after all its the one I like the most."
Turning around again Ryan leaves before throwing one more glance over her shoulder then getting into her car.
Luck
Being taken in by Ryan's kiss, it takes Leo a moment just to realize what was going on. His muffled protest goes unheard, but quickly dwindles as his arm wraps around Ryan's waist, the other over her shoulders.
"Aw man!" Miles spins around to turn his back on them. "The race is about to start and you two are... yeah."
Leo ignores him completely, blinking as Ryan finally pulls away. Hearing her question, he just stares at her dumbly for a moment. "Uh... um... I... didn't know angels needed luck."
Incentive
Walking away Ryan stops as she is about to turn to say something but catches part of the conversation and Leo thinking she was joking. Maybe she was, maybe she wasnt or maybe it was the moonlight, the music and the thrill of the race that made her want to do what she did next. Or maybe, just maybe somewhere she had grown to like Leo a little more.
Walking quickly back over to Leo Ryan takes him in by the arms and turns him around looking at him in the eyes for a moment before bringing her lips to his and giving him a deep kiss that last for a few moments before pulling away as she grins.
"I said wish me luck or was the incentive of a date not good enough?"
Habit?
Feeling Thirteen's hands, then her weight on his lap, Ryder opens his eyes, and lifts his arms, a bit bewildered. He expected her to say something, but she remains quiet, simply curling up on his legs.
He blinks, not really sure how to react as she nuzzles her face into his chest. Slowly, he lets his arm drop and wrap around her, pulling her close so she can't roll off the chair. His other hand takes the blanket to tuck it around her, his fingers brushing lightly against her cheek.
Taking a deep breath, he lets it out slowly, wondering how on earth he'd gotten himself into this position. It wasn't that he didn't like it... but he would have a hard time letting go.
Bending his neck, he plants a soft kiss in Thirteen's hair. "You're welcome," he whispers.
Leaning back, he closes his eyes once more. Sleep was quick to come.
Getting yanked closer to Ryan, Leo's eyes go wide for just a moment. Too soon though, she's already pulled away, and his arm is left hanging open.
A silly grin spreads on his face and he lets out sly growl, lifting and lowering his eyebrows.
Miles slaps his arm. "She serious?"
Leo stops the act and smirks, thinking Ryan is out of earshot. "Kidding? She's just fooling around. She is so out of my league, man."
"Hasn't stopped you from asking her on a date every five minutes."
"Habit."
"Sure." Miles gives him a knowing look and elbows him.
Leo elbows him back. "Whatever. Let's go find Ron."
7/25/09
Luck
Exiting the kitchen and heading into the livingroom again Thirteen is a bit surprised to see Ryder grab the blanket and for a moment she just cocks her head and looks at him. He was going to stay after all.
Sitting down on the ground Thirteen continues to watch Ryder as he closes his eyes. A small chuckle coming out at his comment.
"I guess I dont know if I snore or not. You will have to ask Trooper on that one."
Playing with the fray on the blanket as Ryder's eyes drift shut again Thirteen is silent. Ryder was staying for her and it made her feel good inside.
Stretching her neck a little Thirteen looks up into Ryder's lap. It looked so comfortable and inviting, sleep, sleep would come easy there.
Slowly moving across the floor on all fours Thirteen inches closer o Ryan till she is right next to him. Standing and every so gently Thirteen puts her hands on Ryder's legs, than his check than wraps her one arm around the back of him.
Leaning her head on his chest for a long moment her eyes stay open as she listens to Ryders heart beat. The sound rythmatic, almost hypnotising. With in moments Thirteen's eyes close as she difts in and out of sleep. Feeling safe and comfortable.
Giving a laugh again and shaking her head Ryan cant help but just hold Leo's arm for a moment before jerking him twords her for a moment to move him out of some rough looking people's way. But as Leo is close to her now she cant help herself as she gives him a flashy smile.
"Maybe next time it will be a date and I wont make you wair the gold cloths."
Letting go of Leo Ryan gives him a little bop on the nose with her finder before looking back to Mile's as her eyes twinkle and her lips move up in a grin.
"Hey, I think this is Ron's first race. I hope I win."
Looking around the crowd again Ryan turns to her two friends grabbing her gloves from her pocket and putting them on.
"Well I guess I will see you guys at the finish line. Wish me luck."
Throwing a wink to them again Ryan turns and is off.
Letters
Ryder hated making Thirteen disappointed and though he could tell she tried to contain it, he still spotted it on her face. The inner battle grew stronger. Reese must be preoccupied, not to have noticed Thirteen's absence, but Ryder knew a rebuke would be coming his way. How much worse would it be if he gave in one step further?
But the innocent, sweet look in Thirteen's eyes push him over the edge.
Sighing, Ryder turns and locks the door. Wandering to the living room, he points at Trooper. "Watch the house."
Trooper trots to a spot where he could keep an eye on the front door, living room, hallway and kitchen. Turning once, he flops down with a yawn, but keeps his head up, seeming to know his duty.
Ryder makes sure the big dog stays put, then aims for the corner of the living room for the overstuffed chair. Grabbing a blanket, he kicks off his shoes, then eases into the chair, pulling the handle so he can have a footrest.
Getting comfortable, he shuts his eyes, then cracks one open to look at Thirteen. "Don't snore," he mumbles teasingly. Settling his head back, he closes his eyes, making it quite obvious that he'd decided to stay in the house.
Leo gives Miles a scoff. "Yeah, don't worry. Ryan's tastes are in tact. Getting a date with her is like trying to rob Fort Knox. She just felt sorry for me so she let me tag along." He holds up his hand to show off his bandage.
Miles' eyes widen a little. "What happened?"
"Just a little trouble at the shop. Tell you tomorrow."
"Sounds like you've got a whole lot more to tell," Mike muses. "What's this about women's clothing?"
Leo shrugs. "Guess it had to come out sooner or later." He shakes his head, faking humility. "The secret has been revealed. I have a thing for gold shorts and tiny tops."
"Oh, stop." Miles whacks him over the head, knowing good and well that Leo was kidding. He gave up trying to figure out how the bizarre topic had come up. He hollers after Ryan as she heads away. "Yeah! Ron is here somewhere."
Scott lets his head sink into his pillow, but he doesn't close his eyes right away. He hurt all over. But each night it got just a little better. He understood the tactics and he was trying to learn, but it was hard not to let the words get to him, let alone the brute force. Every strike he received, a flashback tried to surface. But he tried not to let it bother him.
Domino crawls up beside him on the bed and softly licks around the bruise on his face. He knew she was trying to help, but he pushes her back gently, then scratches her head. "Not now," he mumbles. It was still too tender.
Gunner paces the living room, still fully dressed with his handgun holstered. His eyes kept falling to the stack of letters on the corner of Scott's desk. He knew who they were for and he knew that Scott wasn't allowed to send them. It made him mad though. He knew good and well that Scott wouldn't have divulged anything to Hope. But no one would trust the man.
Gunner glances at his watch before making up his mind. Grabbing the stack of letters, he puts a rubberband around them, then goes for his keys. Hesitating at the door, he knows he's not even supposed to leave Scott alone. But he also knew Scott wouldn't go anywhere - he might not even have time to realize he's alone.
It doesnt' take Gunner but a few minutes to be driving down the road in his red pickup. He checked the address on the envelopes to make sure he was headed in the right direction, and confirmed that he was. Grumbles were muttered under his breath for this whole thing. It was silly, law or not. He could get in a lot of trouble for this, but he didn't care.
Finally finding the right house, he shuts off the headlights and pulls up to the curb, leaving the motor running. Sliding out of the truck, he takes a glance around before jogging up to the porch. It would be a federal offense to use the mailbox, so instead, he drops the letters in between the doors. Sprinting back to his truck, within seconds he's out of sight. Mission accomplished. One more to go. But that one he didn't know how long it would take. That would depend on Scott, and so far things were moving slowly.
Letter #1
Hope,
I wanted to take a minute to thank you. Not just for everything you've done for me all along - thanking you for that would take a lifetime. More specifically for helping me just the other day. I was scared and ready to quit... but you believed in me. I've known all along that my family and friends would back me and that they were all pulling for me. But I'm not sure it really sank in until you looked me in the eye and I saw it... I saw that it was true.
I know I've still got a ways to go. My nightmares are sticking around and I froze up on the field during the rescue mission. But without you, I wouldn't have been there at all. So for what it's worth... thank you. You've been my hope through it all.
-Scott
Letter #2
Hope,
It's only been a few days, but I think this classifies as loneliness. Quiet time like this leaves a man too much time to think, and my mind is wandering circles. My dreams have been taking odd twists and turns as if my mind is trying to remember what really happened back at the Agency, so I can finally be released. But so far it's still a blank. All I can rely on is Carson's investigation, though I know he's not even at TJY full-time.
Gunner and Domino have been keeping me company, though I wish I could at least go for a walk in the park. My boredom is actually overcoming my fear at this point. Maybe that's a good thing. Domino has tried to cure me with multiple games of fetch with her rubber ball, but with only one good arm at the moment, she's wearing me out.
I hope you're well. Maybe I'll see you soon.
-Scott
Letter #3
Hope,
It's storming out. We lost power, so I'm writing by candlelight. Gunner says I'm crazy, but I didn't have much else to do. Domino runs under the table every time it thunders. For once, the storm isn't bothering me. I finally realized the thunder is nothing compared to gunfire. I think I'm actually going to be able to enjoy it again.
I had a checkup today. I guess my arm is healing slowly, but it's healing nonetheless. Still pretty sore. I got to visit Katie while I was at the hospital. Hurts to see her like that. Gunner says he'll at least escort me to visits though. He's a good guy.
Just don't know what's going to happen in my future. I can't stay in my house forever. Will they let me back to the Elite? Will they simply let me go? Will I have to spend time behind bars? I just don't know. But I suppose whatever decision they make will be the right one.
-Scott
Letter #4
Hope,
I got out my camera today. Not many things to shoot around my house. Domino's a ham though so once again I have a roll filled up of just her.
It's felt good to dive into my hobby again, even if I couldn't go anywhere. I guess it's still therapy to me.
No nightmares last night. It was a relief. Maybe they're finally over.
I smell something burning. I better check on Gunner in the kitchen. Not so sure he's the best chef, even though he prides himself on his hamburgers.
-Scott
Letter #5
Hope,
Trying to forget is never easy, is it? I know, you would tell me that I shouldn't forget... that I need to work through the memories instead. Hard sometimes though. Guess it's just been a rough day, mentally. I'm tired for no reason, and my mind has had too much time to think about things that I don't want to think about.
Gunner said Carson has been at TJY in the evenings. Guess that means he's still working. I'm beginning to think he's not going to find anything though. I'd rather have my future decided without it, just so I wouldn't have to be in limbo any more. Guess house arrest isn't supposed to be fun though.
-Scott
Letter #6
Hope,
Having ups and downs. Maybe I'm depressed. I want to go to work. I want something to do instead of just sitting around with Agency scenes lurking in the corners. They always seem to take me by surprise. But maybe I'm really not fit to work with the Elite any more. Maybe with as many problems as I have, I really shouldn't be there any more. Dalton can surely handle the workload. I know everyone says they want me back and all... and I think I can restore my abilities... but I wonder if it's really in the cards.
I wonder how you're doing as well. I'm sure you've had plenty to keep you busy.
-Scott
Letter #7
Hope,
I looked in the mirror today and saw ten years had passed within just a few months. It doesn't seem possible, but I see myself and I see the time that has taken its toll on me. A few months ago, I was thought to be dead. A few months before that, life was normal. All in less than a year, I've become a different man with a whole lifetime behind tired eyes.
I saw an old friend while visiting the hospital today. They didn't recognize me. I smiled politely and moved on. Have I changed that much? I see myself and realize the truth. Yes, I have. And to what benefit? Is there a benefit to aging so quickly? I once wondered how someone could grow older faster than time itself. I didn't expect to learn through experience.
-Scott
Letter #8
Hope,
I found a bunch of old pictures today in some boxes of things that were returned to me. I was glad to get some of my family pictures back. After my house was cleaned out, I thought I had lost everything. I saw myself as a kid. I was such a nerd. Maybe I still am! I was so stuck in that box... in that mindset. I never realized that I was only conforming to others' perceptions of me. I thought it's what I was supposed to be. Then someone showed me how to be myself again. Katie was more than a friend... she really changed the way I thought of myself. Maybe it was my eagerness to be the way she liked. Regardless, I realized I'd been stuck in a box someone else had made for me and I wanted out. It felt good to get out... even when I got into trouble for it. Then everything was destroyed. Something inside me was crushed. I didn't have the younger me to cling to, and the newer me wasn't their either. I was just... empty.
Then you came along. I wouldn't have made it without you - of that, I'm certain. And somewhere along the way, I realized that I couldn't change back to any of my old selves. The younger one wasn't real. The me that Katie brought out had been shattered. I had to find a new strength to build upon. I started and got beat down again.
I'm afraid to start again. I'm afraid that once more I might simply be torn to pieces, leaving me void of myself all over again. I feel something deep down, as if wanting to get out. I feel myself wanting something more from me. I just don't know if I can.
-Scott
Letter #9
Hope,
Have you ever seen a one-armed man trying to fix a roof? If you haven't, I should have called someone to film Gunner and me today. Why he wasn't the one with the hammer, I don't know. I should have been the one on the ladder, but for some reason, I was the one on the roof.
After falling off once (I'm okay), bashing my thumb with the hammer (it's got some nice colors at the moment), and dropping the hammer multiple times (it only hit Gunner on the head once), the hole did indeed get patched. Mind you, Domino stood nearby and laughed the whole time. I'm pretty sure she was laughing anyway, by the grin she was wearing later.
I hope your day was less eventful than this. And if not, be sure to take care of your black and blue thumb.
-Scott
Letter #10
Hope,
A tv documentary on mountains made me want to go drive out to the foothills. Then I remembered that I didn't have a car. Not to mention, even if I did, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere anyway.
Days are routine now. I'm getting too used to sleeping late though. If ever I can work again, I'm gonna have a tough time dragging myself out of bed in the mornings.
The mirror was still there today... still reminding me of change... still reminding me that my eyes look ten years older now. Well... one of my eyes anyway. The other one doesn't show anything at all. Interesting color though. Not too many people can say they have an eye that looks like mine. ...ya know, that's the first time I've been able to joke about that. Maybe there's hope for me yet.
-Scott
Letter #11
Hope,
No word from Carson. Gunner questioned Reese, and I'm still in limbo. Now they're trying to decide what will happen if Carson really can't find anything. I decided that if the worst happens, I'll go to jail for a while. Lose a few years. But then once I'm out, maybe I'll find some computer work somewhere. I might do well somewhere other than TJY, ya know?
Anyway... this is my eleventh letter that has yet to be sent. When they said no communication, they meant it. I can't even get Gunner to go to the Post Office for me.
-Scott
Letter #12
Hope,
It's been another quiet day and I am growing tired. I see a few of my friends sometimes when I go to see Katie. But I can never stay. I can never chat. I want to invite you to lunch or see if you want to hang out at the park with Domino and me. But I can't. I don't even know if your in town.
My depression has lifted. I'm seeing things a little differently now. Perhaps being stuck alone has forced me to be introspective when I didn't want to be. Perhaps it has forced me to look to God for direction because there has been no one else around. If ever I felt ready to stand up again, it's now. A brave statement for someone who has not had to face work since Katie's rescue. But I believe it's true. I'm not sure when or how this change happened. Maybe it's the dream-filled sleep last night that led me on a journey through the past and present. Maybe looking in the mirror today, I saw something different... a beginning instead of an end.
You taught me how to believe. I miss you.
-Scott
Letter #13
Hope,
Gunner told me that Carson may have found something. He admitted that Carson's been hacking into Agency files - ones that I apparently gave him a lead to during my interrogation. But I know no results yet, or if it is good or bad.
If it is bad, will I still see you again? I gained so much more than a friend in you, I wouldn't know what to do without the hope of seeing you again.
-Scott
Couldn't ask for more
Ryan's own eyes widen a little as she sits in the car. Had Leo just said this was a date? This was certainly not a date to Ryan, but did Leo really think so? Maybe it was?!
Seeing Miles Ryan gets out of the car a grin on her face. Leo thought he would have the last word and drop it, but this was only the start to a war.
Walking over to the Leo and Miles Ryan gives a nod a short chuckle as she shrugs a little.
"I don't know what I was thinking ether but I think we need to get Leo some help though because he just admitted he dressed in drag."
Giving Leo a slap to the arm Ryan turns to him sticking out her toung as her eyes danced with laughter.
"No really, I figured he was going to come anyways so I thought I would let him tag along. Anyone else from the shop here or just you?"
Ryan gives a quick scan of the crowd to see if she new anyone else, and to check out her compilation before hand.
Getting set upright again Thirteen just watches Ryder. He seemed nervous or flustered all of sudden. Thirteen wasnt sure why but she wonderd if it was something to do with her.
Wanting to help out at least a little bit Thirteen goes to the sink and rinses out the glass putting it in the strainer to dry.
Turning from the sink Thirteen took a few steps forwards but stops as Ryder lets her know he will be in the car again. She cant help the sudden sinking feeling in her heart.
"Oh, ok."
It was nice having someone around, someone to talk to, it was kind of sad to see him go again when she new sleep would probably not come easy tonight. But she couldn't tell Ryder not to go. He's already done so much for her, and helped her a great deal she couldn't be selfish and ask for more.
"I'll try to get some sleep, you too ok?"
Any sleep
Leo swings his head around to look at Ryan, his eyes full of mischief like always. "I never dress in drag on a first date."
He quickly gets out of the car, hoping to have the last word to that conversation, and points to one end of the crowd. "Hey, there's Miles."
Miles had just seen them pull in and he waves at them, ambling over to say hi. "Well hi there, you two." He quirks an eyebrow at Leo. "Don't tell me your car broke down and you needed a ride... you being a mechanic and all."
"Very funny." Leo smirks at him. "I got an invitation, thank you very much."
Miles' eyes widen and he looks at Ryan. "You actually asked this guy to come with you? And I thought you had better taste than that."
"Hey!" Leo gives Miles a backhanded slap to the gut.
Looking down into Thirteen's eyes, Ryder clears his throat. "Sure... no problem."
It seems for a moment that they're just going to stand there like that forever until Ryder finally sets Thirteen up to gain her own balance. He drops his gaze from her face and grabs the towel to clean up the small mess, making sure the floor is dry. "Alright... there we are."
He gives a little nod, then aims for the door, turning before he leaves. "I'll... be out in the car again." He pauses, knowing good and well that he would most likely get very little if any sleep at all tonight. "You try to get some sleep too, okay?"
Two Words
Zooming along the road Ryan cant help the whoop of her own that is let out. It was one thing to race, it was another to do it in fun with someone alone. Knowing Leo wasn't freaked out or scared ether was nice.
As if almost ta ken to a new place while driving the smile on Ryan's face was different from most that she wore. Here she was free, letting her talent and light for racing show.
Up ahead many lights shone off the road a little ways along with loud music playing. It was easy to see something was going on out here, but not many people travailed this road and most people would have had to been invited by another.
Slowing her speed Ryan looks to Leo again and gives a wink bring back his earlier comment.
"I guess there is a first for everything huh?"
Getting closer to the sight Ryan slows the car even more almost bring it to a crawl. Making a few stops here and there to talk to people or find out where he car was going to be parked, race order and what the steaks where.
Feeling Ryder's around her as she is about to go down Thirteen new she was safe. She hadn't meant to slip but Ryder was right there to catch her anyways.
"I'm ok. I was just trying to help clean the mess up I helped make."
Her arms now around Ryder's too Thirteen runs her hand along his upper arm for a moment before looking up at him again and giving a small smile.
"Thank you!"
Catch
Getting in the car with Ryan, Leo wears a crooked grin that won't leave. At her comment about the clothes in the back, he quirks an eyebrow and looks in her direction, then to the back seat. "Hmm... well... I suppose if that gets you to say yes to letting me tag along then that would be worth it... But it would have to be our secret."
Laughing, he settles in his seat for a fast ride, having known it was coming. Letting a whoop out the open window, he proves he is thoroughly enjoying himself, despite the crazies back at the shop.
Seeing Thirteen start to fall, Ryder's reflexes kick in. His glass goes to the counter, and both arms go out, catching her before she hits the floor.
"Whoa, you alright?" With his arms around her, he grins a little. "Um... sorry. I'll get that mopped up."
7/24/09
Slip
Just letting the corner of her mouth stay curled Ryan gives a small shakes of her head before going back inside and grabbing her keys.
Going back outside Ryan gives Leo a light punch to his arm before making her way to her car and yelling over her shoulder.
"If your coming you better hurry, I am not one to wait around. And dont bleed in my car."
Once making sure Leo was in the car Ryan gives a half wave to Alex before pulling out of the parking lot and making her way slowly down the street. Giving a chuckle to herself she gives a glance in Leo's direction quickly before looking back to the street.
"You know, since your coming with me and I am the driving your gonna have to ware the extra set of cute gold short shorts and low cut tank top I have in the back."
Though the grin on her face was now gone the twinkle in her eye was not that showed she was kidding.
Giving one last glance in the rear view mirror to make sure no one was behind them Ryan pushes down on the gas make the car speed down the road the wind blowing in her hair as she enjoyed the speed.
Seeing that she scared Ryder Thirteen cant help the laugh that forms in her throat as she brings a hand to her mouth. It was strange for her to have startled Ryder.
"Oops, I guess I didn't expect that to happen!"
Looking down at the water on the floor Thirteen raises an eyebrow before looking up at Ryder again.
"Yeah, I'm ok. Just couldn't sleep very well is all. New surroundings and all."
Leaning over the counter a little to grab the towel Thirteen can't reach it so moving her feet just a little she trys to get closer. Her foot stepping on some water that was not known about. Feeling her feet slip Thirteen can't doing anything as she feels herself start to fall backwards.
Okay?
Leo smirks at Ryan, his eyes narrowing, though his mouth turns up in a grin. "Naw, I always have good points... just so happens that you actually recognized it this time."
The grin becomes a full smile at the offer to go with her. "Only if I can finally get a ride in your car."
With his back turned, Ryder slowly sips his water, his eyes focusing on a far window as his mind wanders.
Suddenly hearing Thirteen close behind him, he's caught totally by surprise. He'd been trying not to scare her, but now she'd done it to him instead.
Whirling around too quickly, his hand jerks. The water in his glass can't defy the laws of nature, and fly as his hand does. Before he knows it, there's water on his shirt and the floor.
He blinks and looks to Thirteen, then back at his half-empty glass. "Um... yeah... had a hard time sleeping out there I guess."
Giving a chuckle at himself, he throws the rest of his water in the sink and shakes his head. Sighing, he cocks his head at Thirteen and opens his mouth, but then shuts it again, once more not saying what had crossed his mind a few minutes earlier. "You okay in here?"
Wast
Giving a glance to Reese, Axel and than the car that held Carson and Alec Ryan gives a small sigh. Maybe she had been a little hard on Alec when he was starting to sober up. She couldn't help it though her rough exterior shielded her from a guy she didn't know even if she wanted to try and help them.
Turning at Leo's voice Ryan is pulled back from her thought her back now to the car. Giving a sly grin at Leo's comment Ryan cant help but give a nod as she agrees.
It wasn't often she felt lonely but all day today had been one of those days and she just wanted company. If Leo would go, than at least it would be someone.
"You know its not often you have a good point. Guess I shouldn't wast this one when who knows when you next one will come."
The humor twinkles in Ryan's eyes as she teases Leo.
"Wanna come with me?"
Putting the guitar back down on the stand Thirteen hears the door open and stands up quickly her ears alert and her defenses rising. It was more than likly just Ryder but she couldn't help the pounding of her heart.
Taking a few steps forward Thirteen see the kitchen light go on and a shadow thats cast on the floor. Knowing the form that was cast Thirteen rolls her eyes at herself and gives a small smile.
Going into the kitchen she walks slowly as her feet scuff across the floor. Giving a cough she knows her cover of being there is now blown. Giving a soft laugh.
"Your lucky I didn't set Trooper on sick mode."
Looking down at Trooper Thirteen gives a gentile pat on his head feeling silly again. Trooper hadn't made a move and that should of been the first sign that it was only Ryder that had come in.
Letting out a sigh she moves to the sink to stand contemplating maybe getting a drink herself.
"Couldn't sleep eather huh?"
Music
Leo almost seems disappointed that someone had come to get information about what had happened. The look on his face portrayed that he felt he'd been "this" close to actually winning some of Ryan's attentions.
Smirking a little, he follows Ryan through the shop to get back to the office where Reese and Axel still were.
Reese nods at Ryan as she talks and he jots down a few notes. "Sounds pretty cut and dry." He turns to Leo. "And you?"
Leo just thumbs towards Ryan. "What she said."
Reese quirks an eyebrow, not thrilled with the lack of details, but he lets it go. With Axel and Ryan's accounts, he had what he needed to turn into the police. "Anything missing?"
Axel shakes his head. "Naw, he didn't get away with anything."
"Any damage done?"
"No." Axel shakes his head again. "Unless you count a little ding in the shelf there, but it's far less damage than the bump that guy's got on his head."
Reese almost smiles. "Alright. Thanks for calling us down here, Axel. I'm glad you recognized him. If you have any trouble connected with this, or you do find some damage, please let us know and we'll help you get it straightened out."
"Thanks." Axel wanders to the door with Reese, looking out at the waiting car. He gives Carson a casual salute, receiving one in return. Though Carson didn't show much feeling connected with Alec, Axel knew that deep down his friend was probably dealing with some pretty confusing emotions. All he could do was keep praying for him.
Leo sighs and leans back against the counter, cradling his hand that was growing more sore. He looks to the clock, then to Ryan. "You could make it if you ignore the speed limit out on fifty-six." A crooked grin emerges. "You wouldn't want a petty thief to ruin your race tonight, would you?"
Ryder's eyes aren't even close to being closed when his ears catch a strange sound. It was faint, but it almost sounded like a guitar. Odd... He sits up on the hood of the car, cocking his head. Yes, it did sound like a guitar and it was coming from inside the house. Did he hear singing too? He wasn't quite sure. It takes him a moment, then he realizes what must be going on. A small smile turns up the corner of his mouth.
Unable to help his curiosity, he slides slowly off the hood and ambles closer to the house. He wanted to know what Thirteen was up to. He figured she'd discovered one of Jason's guitar, but he was a little surprised that she'd taken the initiative to check it out.
Leaning against the house, he presses his ear to the door and is able to make out the music and words she was singing. For someone just picking up an instrument for the first time, she wasn't doing a terrible job at all. Ryder wondered if she did have some talents that had been hidden deep down from so many years of being held back.
He's ready to simply turn back and leave her alone, when he catches the words she's singing. He stops and listens, a lump rising in his throat. He'd known that she felt like she needed him... but now he knew she even recognized that need. It made something stir inside of him that hadn't been touched in a long time.
Ryder looks back to the car. He couldn't sleep out here no matter how hard he tried. And he was thirsty. And it sounded like Thirteen couldn't sleep either. What other excuses did he need to check on her? He rolls his eyes at himself.
The music had stopped now, so he goes ahead and opens the door, quietly slipping inside. He knew the sound would get Thirteen's attention so he didn't need to announce himself. Instead, he simply goes to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water. There was something he wanted to say to her but... he figured that just getting his water was the best option.
"You're nothin', Scott."
Another hit to the face.
"Come on, you're not even trying."
Whack.
"Can't you see it coming? Now come on, pay attention!"
Smack.
"You don't deserve to be an Agent."
Scott tries to duck another blow and holds his hands up in defense, struck again, this time hard enough to knock him down onto the mat. He pants, his hair dripping with sweat. "I can't..." He tries to catch his breath. "Can't... do it."
"You will do it."
"But-"
"Get up!"
Scott is yanked to his feet. He takes another hit to the side of his face, maddening him enough to strike back.
"Better. Better. Watch yourself. Keep up that arm. Watch your feet!"
Scott's feet go out from under him, knocking the wind out of him. He just lies there, breathless and unable to get himself up again.
"Okay... we're through for today."
"What-"
"Tomorrow, again."

Sounds
As an hour goes by Thirteen continues to lay on the ground with Trooper close by but the time just moves as sleep doesn't find her. Though he mind was blank she tryed to see beyond the darkness in her mind where the fear of the unknown was.
Sitting up from her make shiftbed Thirteen lets out a long sigh resting her head in her hand for a moment. Looking up she is met with Troopers eyes looking back at her. Bringing a hand out to she runs it through Troopers few and lets out a another small sigh.
"I guess even here sleep it not easly found."
Giving a little jump as the house creeks with the blowing wind Thirteen looks around as if expecting to see someone standing there. Seeing no one Thirteen rolls her eyes and looks back to Trooper cocking her head.
"Someday I will be normal."
Standing again Thirteen's eyes scan the room seeing the guitar once more. She was so fascinated with this instrument. She had seen them before but never had she actully heard one.
Picking the gutair up once more Thirteen runs her fingers over the strings as she makes her way back to the couch and sits down places the instramint gently in her lap. This was not hers and though she was intrested in it she did not want to break it.
Gentily Thirteen picks the strings as a few horrable sounds come from it. Cringing a little and looking to Trooper her face shows her sorrys to him at the sound.
Continuing to play with the gutair Thirteen continues to play trying to make something sound good. Though getting the hang of it slowly she spots the pick on the table. Picking it up she holds it in her fingers as she continues to play.
Finally making a tone that might not be right but sounds good Thirteen smiles at herself. Closing her eyes she continues to play putting a few twists here and there as quietly at first words come from her lips.
My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why
I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'd all be grey,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it's not so bad,

As the soft music dies Thirteen hits a wrong note or two but dosnt really pay much mine to it. Just setting the gutair down Thirteen leans back in the couch and just stairs off into space once more.
Giving a short chuckle and a silly smile Ryan continues to clean up Leo's hand.
"This, I've had worse than this. I race cars remember?"
Finally looking up Ryan catchs Leo looking at her and for a moment her eyes search his before looking away again. She new the look that was in Leo's eyes and she new he liked her. Than again Leo liked any female.
Feeling the gentil hand on her face a tingle shoots through her never really feeling such a gentil hand on her. Giving another smile she looks to Leo just looking at him for a short moment. Opening her mouth to say something to Leo Ryan stops as she hears Axel's voice call to them.
The last wrap is complete on Leo's hand when she gives his arm a gentil pat. Standing she starts to walk to the door.
"Sounds like the big guys wanna talk to us."
Giving a sigh and a silly grin she shakes her head before disapearing out the door.
"So much for the race tonight."
Exiting the office and making her way to the front, than stepping outside Ryan gives a small nod to Reese in acknowledgement to saying hello. Being bref Ryan goes over how everything went down from her view point.
"...I went around back and saw Leo was in trouble and Axel as well. I needed to move fast if I wanted to help them. I did what I could and hit him taking him off guard to Leo could get away and we could get the weapon away from him. He hit me, Leo hit him, and here we are now."
Ryan cross her arms as her face stings a little but trys not to flinch with the pain. She didnt like officers much but she new this had to be done. If she just gave the information they wanted they would leave and that would be that.

Hands
Ryder sinks down behind the steering wheel, leaning his head back and closing his eyes. His cell phone was in his pocket, and he dreaded getting a call, but it's what he'd decided and he was going to stick to it. Thirteen deserved more than being stuffed in the spare room forever.
Shifting his weight, Ryder yawns and folds his arms. But his position doesn't last long. A few minutes later, the seat is leaning back and he's trying to avoid the pedals at his feet.
Ten minutes and a cramp in his leg force him into the back seat where he fights with lack of space to stretch out. The car rocks as he roots around. When his head hits the door handle for the fourth time, he crawls up into the passenger seat instead. With that chair back as far as it can go and reclined as far as it can go, Ryder sets his feet up on the dash. Within fifteen minutes, his legs have fallen asleep, but he himself is far from the rest he seeks.
Giving a loud grunt, he throws open the door. The night air was warm and would have been stale, but a cool breeze was blowing to relieve the temperature. Ryder gets out of the car and leans his arms on the roof for a moment, sighing deeply. After a few moments, he moves and climbs onto the hood, lounging back against the windshield with his hands up behind his head. The stars were out tonight. He couldn't see as many as he could back home... back in Australia, that is. But at least there were a few that broke through the darkness. The moon was bright as well. Was it possible that it was the same moon that shone in Australia?
He hadn't had much time lately to reflect... he'd been kept busy enough. But tonight... being out here... it was quiet. And he missed home again. He felt so out of place here. Maybe being at TJY really wasn't what he should be doing here. He wanted to be a part of it... but if there was anything he didn't feel like, it was being "elite." Maybe he should just get out of Reese's hair and find something else. Maybe he could even go back to a different part of Australia. Start new there instead.
Taking a lung full of air, he holds it a moment before letting it out slowly. Some things were so easy. Some things were so hard. Now if only he could get to sleep so he would stop thinking about it.
Leo winces as Ryan cleans the cut on the top of his hand. Grimacing, he tries to act like it's nothing, though. After a moment, his eyes drift up from his hand to Ryan's face instead. "Looks like you need to see to your own battle scar," he comments.
Bringing his other hand up, he traces around the red mark where Alec had slapped her. "I shoulda slugged him before he got you like that."
"You've got to be kidding me."
Axel turns around quickly at the sound of Carson's voice. "Well I don't know about Reese, but I'm certainly not kidding. This him?"
Carson rolls his eyes. "Yeah. The idiot. What did he want and how did he end up here?"
"Don't know. Looked like he was just trying to get to some cash when Leo walked in here. He held Leo with a letter opener to the throat, then Ryan came in through the back so we could surprise him. Worked okay. Leo got cut on the hand and Ryan got slapped but... as you can see, we got him down."
Reese looks over the counter and shakes his head. "I'd still like to know how he got out."
Carson goes around and kneels next to his brother and gives him a shake. "Hey. Alec. Wake up."
Getting a light slap to the face, Alec blinks, then immediately tries to slug Carson. Carson is faster though, and grabs his wrists. "Steady on," he growls. "You're coming with us." Yanking Alec to his feet, he gives no mercy.
Alec gives a shout as he's back on his feet. "No! Let me go! You can't hold me forever!"
Reese grumbles a complaint about having to deal with people like this, then approaches to easily slap his wrists in handcuffs. "You're right. We can't. Which means, you'll probably end up behind bars. How's that?"
Fire flashes in Alec's eyes but he doesn't answer.
Reese nods to Carson. "Take him out to the car. I want to talk to the others here."
Carson obeys, taking Alec outside.
Taking the hint, Axel opens the door to the shop and hollers to Ryan and Leo. "Hey, guys - we need to tell what happened. Come back for a minute."
Once Carson is outside, he shoves Alec towards the waiting car and spares no brute force, getting him into the back seat before slamming the door. Sliding into the passenger seat, he waits, prepared for a quiet wait. But Alec seemed determined to talk for some reason.
"You want to blame someone for me getting out?" A crooked smile spreads on Alec's face, as if he's proud of getting out, even though he'd been caught.
Carson quirks an eyebrow. "I think you're the one at fault here."
"Maybe. But why don't you ask our sister?"
"Dani?" Now Carson is on edge. "She had nothing to do with this and you know it!"
"You sure?" Alec taunts him. "You know she came to see me a couple times..."
"Dani wouldn't let you out," Carson snarls. "She knows better."
"Does she?"
"Shut your trap." Carson leans against the window, not wanting to hear any more. But something in the back of his mind evoked doubt. Why would Alec have made that up?
