Axel grins wryly as he slides into the passenger side. "So it's the knight in distress and the damsel in shining armor. Sounds like quite the twisted fairytale."
The ride back to Jess' is a quiet one, but peaceful, despite the scene at the restaurant. Axel's mind was full of choices and decisions, unsure of which path to take. But he had to take one. That much was certain.
Getting back into the parking lot, Axel gives his hand time to recuperate by carrying on a quiet conversation with Jess for a little while. As it gets later though, the night must close, and he promises he'll talk with her tomorrow.
A set of eyes watches out the bus window, steady on the figure that was stretched across her jeep hood. They study for several moments before slipping away again, into the shadows.
Some days bring just another set of hours to be conquered. And some... some bring to light journeys that have just begun...
"Come on, Mac, let's go!" Carson waits by the door, glancing at his watch. Everyone had been running late this morning, but this was one day he couldn't screw up.
Dani had done most of the interaction with Mackenzie that morning. The girl had taken to her aunt immediately and vice versa. Carson had stayed more in the background, avoiding too much conversation. Until now. Dani was already out in the car, and Mackenzie was dragging her feet getting dressed.
"I'm coming!" she hollers from the bedroom.
Carson sighs. He knew she didn't want to leave. But she had to. "We can't be late, Mac," he reminds her. "I gotta be to work, and we have to wait for someone to come pick you up."
"I know." Her tone is mumbled as she finally comes down the hall, her head hanging a little. "You sure I can't stay?"
"How many times do I have to tell you this?" Carson looks down at her, wishing this was easier. It was hard on her... it was hard on him, even if he didn't want to admit it. "I brought you here for one night, and one night only. You need to be satisfied with that. You're not coming to live with me. It's not possible."
Mackenzie bites her lip. "You really don't want me, huh?"
This time, Carson could tell that the question was genuine and not a mode of manipulation. He sighs deeply. "Look... Heather is right. I'm not the fatherly type." He searches the girl's eyes for a glimmer of understanding. "I can't take care of you. You need a family... you need two parents. You need someone who can give you what you need. And I'm not that person. Can you understand that?"
"No." Mackenzie swallows hard. "I thought maybe... maybe once you got to know me that... that you might change your mind."
"This is beyond my control," Carson responds gently. "It's not up to me. But even if it was... I would want you to have a family."
"You know I'll probably forget this." Mackenzie holds back a tear. "In a few years... I might not even be able to remember your face."
Now Carson's eyes narrow and he opens the front door. "Not gonna work, Mac. Come on."
Mackenzie exits grudgingly, remaining quiet on the ride to Mom and Pop's.
Opening up and getting things ready in the kitchen, Carson sets to work, letting Mackenzie wait out at one of the tables, and making her a quick breakfast. With Aerith there to help, getting things started wasn't too hard, and soon the sign on the door read "Open." Carson was on edge though. He knew someone would show up soon for Mackenzie. And they did.
Two men and a woman enter the restaurant. A few customers look up from their tables, but no one seems alarmed. Carson meets them at the counter. "Can I help you?"
One of the men nods to him. "Mr. Banks?"
"That's right."
"Where's the girl?"
Carson points to a nearby table. The woman immediately goes to her, while the two men remain. "Mr. Banks, would you please step around the counter?"
Carson glances over his shoulder to Aerith, before setting his towel down and coming around to the front. "What do you want?"
"We're sorry to have to do this." The taller man flashes a badge. "You're under arrest for kidnapping. You have the right to remain silent..." As the spiel continues, Carson is roughly turned around, his arms forced behind his back to be handcuffed. He knew his rights. He knew the words. He wanted to fight. His adrenaline made him want to run. But he saw Mackenzie... and he knew he had no choice but to go.
"Aerith..." Carson is pushed toward the door. "Aerith!" he calls over his shoulder. "Close up for the day as soon as you can... don't tell anyone why... and..."
Mackenzie's shriek interrupts. "No! Let him go!"
The woman struggles to maintain a hold on the girl. "Calm down, Mackenzie. Everything is going to be okay."
"No! You can't take him to jail! You can't!"
"Shhh, hush now, come on. We're going home."
"No!!" Mackenzie wails as she's pulled across the floor and forced to exit the restaurant and get into a waiting car.
Carson rips loose for a moment, caught in the crossfire of shouting, but desperate to not leave Aerith in a bind. "...and if you need help..." He struggles to remain inside as the men push him out the door. "...call Con!"
And in a moment, all is silent inside the restaurant.
An hour later...
Nate's private phone at his desk rings. Carson waits on the other end, impatiently pacing, then stopping to lean against the concrete wall. Hearing Nate's voice, he breathes a sigh of relief. "Nate... it's Carson. Look, I'm downtown at the police station. They're not holding me, but I need someone to come get me and take me back to TJY. You guys are the only ones I know who can help me... and I need all the help I can get."
"What do you mean he's not here? Where is he?"
Gunner shakes his head, grabbing a cup of coffee in the dining hall. The weary travelers had arrived later than planned last night, so this morning was the first of any news that was spread. And Mick was none too happy to learn about Jeff's disappearance. "I don't know."
"Well somebody has to!" Mick sets his coffee down before he spills it all over the place with his gesturing. So far, the room was still quiet, not many people being up yet, and his voice carries.
"I'm sorry!" Gunner shakes his head again. "Nobody knows anything. Reese isn't talking."
"He's going to be getting a call from me then, that's for sure." Mick frowns in disgust. "Secrets," he mutters. "I thought we were through with those." Hearing a noise, he spins around to see Rosetta. How much she'd heard, he didn't know.

Star
Keeping the tags in her had a whole new emotions starts to feel Jess up on the inside that was kind of hard to explain. Though some might think it wasnt a big deal but to Jess and Axel, they had made a promise and a commitment to each other. Another step on there adventure.
Returning the kiss to Axel with feeling Jess keeps a tight hold to Axel's tags in her hand. Letting the emotions flow over and through her as for a moment they felt untouchable. As Axel pulls away a smile forms on Jess face as she looks up into Axel eyes. The silence was always welcomed, they could talk with out even saying a word.
Finally pulling away Jess takes the tags and puts the chair around her need and than tucks them under her shirt. Only a little bit of the chain could be seen to show Jess had something around her neck.
"I'll keep them close my heart, the one you stole from me."
Jess beams as she looks up at Axel. Knowing the night was growing late and taking the key from Axel Jess gives a small giggle as she gets into the driver side.
"You know it dosnt always have to be a guy who is the Knght. Its my turn this time and next time you can have the credit."
Sitting on the top of her hood Alice stairs off into the starlit sky. Everyone alse as far as she new was sleeping, now now was her quiet time her time to think and reflect the time for her smile to fade. Its not that her smile was fake, it was in fact very much real but now there was time to sit and think.
Looking out into the star lit sky Alice's memories take her back to when a tall slender man was sitting next to her in the lawn. His one arm tucked behind his head while his other arm was wrapped around Alice. The moonlight sending rays of light to bounce off his dirty blond hair that was ties back in a neat poney tail only a few strands of hair has escaped. His big brown eyes looking deep into Alice untill he looks back at the sky a smile on his lips.
"You think someday they will name a star after me? After a become a rock star and all?"
Rolling on to her back but not to far as to roll out of the strong mans arm Alice looks up at the stars.
"You dont have to be a rock star to have a star named after you Seth. You already are a star to me and shine brighter than any in the sky. But maybe one day if your lucky I'll find the perfect on and name it after you."
"Ohhh Alice...what would my world be like with out you?"
"Dull and boring Seth, I mean who else would you want taking band picture but me. I make it fun."
Feeling something push between herself and Seth Alice looks down to see a big black lab inching his way up between the two. Giving a chuckel Alice scratches the dog behind his ears.
"You are just like your daddy, you have to be the center of attachen huh Samson?"
Acknowledging that he was being talked to Samson lets out a back as Seth pulls Alice closer and press his lips to her letting it linger before pulling away.
"I love you Alice."
A small tear rolls down Alice's as a smile forms on her lips again. That was one of her most cherished memories that she would never forget, and not many people new about that part of her life.
Searching the sky Alice scans the stars as if looking for something, than stoping her gaze lands on the brightest star there that held a redish glow. The one she had been looking for that could only be seen 4 times a year as the season changed.
Reaching out as if to touch the star Alice smile as she whispers.
"I love you too Seth."
Knight
Axel's typical faint smile reappears as he takes the bookmark. He gives a little nod - Jess was so thoughtful. "Thank you." One day she would need a bookmark too. He didn't know when or how, but someday, he would be able to share more of his life with her than he had already. And when he did, he knew God would work through him. Jess had been broken in more ways than one. Axel was helping her heal. But only God could fully restore her.
Slipping the bookmark into his shirt pocket, he then opens up Jess' palm. He lets the dogtags fall into her hand, then curls her fingers over them. "Keep this for me," he says quietly.
Slowly leaning in, Axel gives Jess' lips a tender but lingering kiss. Then drawing back, he lets his eyes stare into her own for a moment. He didn't mind the silence. He rather liked it, when words really couldn't do justice.
But like all moments, it had to end. Axel straightens and reaches into his jeans pocket to pull out his keys, and hands them to Jess. "I don't want to drive with just one hand," he admits. His right hand didn't hurt at the moment, after she'd worked on it, but it was completely numb. "Guess I'll have to wait for another evening to be the knight in shining armor."
Ryder's eyes fly open as he hears the front door. Sitting up on the couch, he squints in the dark. Hearing Henry's meow, he knows that it's just Laura, and he flops back down again.
Laura grins, just seeing Ryder's head disappear again. Wandering up behind the couch, she looks down at him, grinning. "Sorry I woke you up."
"No worries. You saved me from the fate of a big ol' croc anyway."
"Dreaming?"
"Mm-hmm." Ryder's eyes are closed again, but as he hears Laura move away, he opens them once more. "Laura?"
She returns. "Yeah?"
"How's things?"
She smiles, knowing good and well what he meant. "They're good. Real good."
"Gonna marry the poor guy?"
She laughs and shakes her head. "No... not yet."
"Sounds like there's some chance left though."
"I think so." Laura reaches down to shove Ryder's head further into his pillow. "If it were anyone else I was having this conversation with, I would have put them in their place by now."
Ryder grins, looking up at her. "Yeah, but no matter how much I pry into your personal affairs, you just can't bear to hurt this innocent face."
"Oh please." Laura scoffs teasingly and turns back around again. "When you get up in the morning be careful - your head might not fit through the doorway anymore."
My Promise
Looking out at the night sky Jess watches the stars twinkle. How pretty the night was yet the heart were full of pain.
Listing and walking with Axel Jess is silent as she reaches out for Axel's hand that had just become second nature to her now and start rubbing it softly knowing it would help.
Continuing to listen to Axel Jess gives small nods here and there to let Axel know she was still listing to him and hearing every word he said. Jess respected the how much Axel still respected his brother and his loyalty even though he has seemed that his brother himself turned his back on Axel. It ment so much about him in just that simple fact.
Finally stoping the rubbing on Axel's hand Jess looks up at him. At his comment about finding out the truth.
"I'll help you as much as I can with finding out the truth, maybe that place Jason and Katie work for can come in handy with that."
Searching Axel's eyes Jess own portray her feelings. She's just gotten Axel and this feeling she liked so much, she wasnt going to let it go so soon.
Gently reaching up Jess runs her fingers over the lettering on the dogs tags. These held so much meaning to Axel and it ment to world to him.
Letting go of his name for a moment Jess reaches into her pocket and pulls out a bookmark. On it was a sea and what looked like a raging storm, but up in the top there was a rainbow peeking through the clouds and the colors were so amazing. Holding it out to Axel Jess smiles.
"I'd got this for you while we were at one of the gas stations. I know you read the bible and I though maybe you would like to use it to hold your place."
Jess gives another smile as the moonlight glisens around Jess and Axel, lighting up his face nicly so Jess could see it. His deep blue eyes that had always given Jess hope, than showed the deeper side to Axel.
"If you get run out of town, I'll follow, if the give you bounds, I'll break them. This is my promise to you that I wont turn my back on you no matter what happens. I think you might be stuck with me. You wont have to deal with this alone ever again."
Jess smile grows as she ment what she said. No matter what they had to go through Axel would no longer be alone. Friend, girlfriend he would always have someone by his side.

Promise
Axel is quiet for several moments, just standing on the sidewalk and looking out into the night. He rubs his hand absentmindedly, but that pain didn't compare to what was going on in his mind and heart.
"It's not your fault," he finally replies. "You didn't make things worse. You were just doing what you thought was right. I can't be upset at you for that."
He looks down, then takes a deep breath, starting towards the car. "I'm sorry our evening was ruined. I should have known better."
Getting to the parking lot, he stops by the car, letting Jess' arm go to lean against the roof. He still didn't dare to look in her eyes. "It didn't used to be like this, ya know." He swallows hard. "It was just me. The words were the same. The looks were the same. People talking about me and throwing their remarks at me were the same. And I could take it. I got used to it."
He nods, convincing himself as he stares out into the dark. "I always figured there was no point in trying to prove my innocence, ya know? No proof... what was the point? I could always run. it was just me. Who cared? But now..."
Axel shakes his head slowly and finally turns around to face Jess. "...but now there's more than me. And I can't take it." His jaw muscles tighten, the strain getting worse. "I could take me getting the jabs and the looks... but I don't want you getting them too. You don't deserve that."
He pauses, the look in his eye proving that so much was running through his mind. "When... when I was just a kid... teenager... my brother and I were close. Did everything together... always had each other's backs. We made a promise one day that we'd never leave the other one behind. To seal the bargain, we gave each other these."
Reaching inside his shirt, Axel reveals his dogtags, pulling the chain over his head. His thumb runs over the words. Axel Jalen. "I guess when I was convicted, he figured it was me who broke the promise first. But I'd still have his back... if I ever saw him again."
Regrouping, Axel shakes his head again. "Ever since then, I'll I've done is run, because I could. Because it was just me. But it's time for me to stop." He stares Jess in the eye. "It's time for me to prove my innocence. I don't know how... I don't know if I even can. But I have to try. If not for my sake, then for yours."
He slowly stretches out his hand, the dogtags hanging in front of Jess. "I could get in a lot of trouble, exposing myself. I could get run out of town. I could be given boundaries by law. But I promise you... no matter what happens... I won't leave you behind."
Your words...
Continuing to listen at the people at the table Jess own fire burns even more. It wasnt fair, why did these people have to be like this and why couldnt they see what she could. Axel would never hurt anyone.
As Axel take her arm to lead her out of the restraint and let things lie She turns to follow only to relize a little to late things were worse now.
"No, He's not hurting me..."
"Everythings fi..."
But as Axel is asked to leave a pain flashes in Jess eyes. She had only made thing worse now. Watching Axel leave she shakes her head. This wasnt fair, why did it have to be like this.
Turning back to the group a Jess eyes were now read and had a glossy color to them not for herself but for Axel and what he has to deal with. Looking around the table she look apon the group with disust.
"I hope I live to see the day you eat your words spoken today."
Turning quickly Jess goes back to the table grabing bother there jackets and throwing some money on the table before turning and jogging out the door calling for Axel.
Catching up to him Jess rests a hand on his arm for a moment as she links her arm with his and lets out a long sigh. The nice night air helped cool her own anger for what haend inside, now only a guilt remained.
"I'm sorry I made things worse. It just made me so angry that they talked about you that way. I just, wanted to defent you and I made it worse. You wanna go for a walk on the beach or something?"
Leaving
“Jess no, don’t…” Axel’s voice trails off. Too late.
The men and women at the other table all look upon Jess with distaste, the men’s stares turning into glares. “What… look… back of, lady.”
They try to interrupt, but their voices just get lost in Jess’ passionate words.
“What ever happened to freedom of speech?” one woman grumbles.
“Lady, cool it.” But the man’s voice isn’t heard.
As Jess ends, the small group all eye each other, no one saying anything right away. It was obvious that her strong words indeed made them all feel guilty. No one could deny that they really didn’t have facts… they had just heard rumors and seen a picture. Jess’ words did cut them to the quick. But the men weren’t as apt to take the speech lying down.
“Honor? You’re kidding me, right? You just don’t like us saying that your boy there’s a criminal. People like him lost all honor the day they did the despicable.”
“We don’t want someone like him around,” the other guy chimes in. “The public deserves to know he exists, and he doesn’t deserve to be around our families. You think you got dignity back by hanging out with him, you’re looney.”
The first man scoffs. “He’s a menace to society.”
One of the women tries to get the guys to calm down. “Look, just leave it… come on.”
“No!” The man argues. “I came here for a nice evening, not to look at a guy like that.” Riled up, he stands, facing Jess. “I suggest you go back and if you’re that naive to let him brainwash you into thinking he cares, then be my guest. But don’t bring him here.”
Axel has had enough. Standing up, he throws his napkin down and takes a step to the other table. Putting himself between Jess and the table, he takes her by the arm, pulling her away. “It’s not worth it, Jess, forget it.”
“Hey, let her go,” the other man growls.
A waiter gets bumped and drops a glass of water. “Excuse me, is everything okay?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Axel growls. “Fine.”
“No, it isn’t fine!” The other man raises his voice. “This man is a criminal and this woman is his next victim.”
“That’s a lie!” Axel’s own voice raises to match the heightened tones. His hand remains on Jess’ arm as his desperation increases.
By now, the waiter is taking sides, trying to resolve this issue without a larger scene. “Sir… sir…” He puts a hand on Axel’s shoulder. “Please, let the girl go.”
“I’m not trying to hurt her!”
“Just let her go!”
Axel drops Jess’ arms and puts both hands in the air. “Alright! Okay?” His right hand, now visible is trembling involuntarily.
The waiter motions to a nearby manager, who comes over, concerned. “Is there a problem?”
“Yes!”
“No!”
The manager frowns and looks at Axel, who seems to be the biggest problem. “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
“Look, I just…”
“Please.”
Axel can see that there is no use in arguing, and he drops his hands to his sides in defeat. He looks at the men at the table, his eyes showing a strange plea for mercy. His gaze bounces to the waiter, the manager, then finally Jess. The look of apology on his face could not be more sincere.
Hanging his head, Axel turns and trudges towards the door. He knew that Jess would follow, and he wanted to take her on his arm to walk her out with dignity, but right now, that would only make things worse.
He shoulders his way out of the restaurant, never having been so embarrassed in his life. It was almost as bad as right after the incident itself. The looks were the same. The attitudes were the same. Except now it wasn’t just him being affected anymore.
The cool night air did nothing to refresh or soothe. Axel stops on the sidewalk, rubbing his hand as the pain shoots through it. He wished he would have chosen somewhere else to go tonight…anywhere else. This wasn’t fair… it wasn’t fair to Jess or him.
Your right..
Continuing to hear the people at the other table talk a fire forms inside Jess. She didnt want to make this a big deal but now it was getting personal and they had drug her into it.
Nodding at Axel Jess stands.
"I'll be right back Axel."
Walking over swiftly to the other table Jess leans with both her hands on it being quiet for a moment before looking up and keeping her voice strong but soft to not make a big scene.
"You wanna know what, your right with what you said. I do see a pretty disrespected person in this room and all three of them are right here at this table."
Jess is quiet for a moment her eyes shooting darts at the tree people around the table.
"People like him..."
Giving a nod to Axel Jess continues.
"...We need more people like him. I had my dignity taken away, and than man there he gave it back to me. He showed me I do have worth, and helped me find my light again. Monster...no rainbow."
Jess is quiet on more time as she turns to Axel and smiles. She was proud to be his girlfriend, Jess was proud to know who he was. Turning back to the table again Jess shakes her head as a few memories and smile of Axel pass through her head.
"Far to often the innocent get punished for the wrongs deeds, while they run free and continue to hurt people. So before you talk about other why dont you stop and check your own life and see should you really be talking about anyone else when you yourself arnt perfect. As for me I'm happy I found that man there and I got to know him. I'll fight for his honer any day."
Anger
Carson returns Misty's kiss and rolls over onto his back to look up to her, traces of a sly grin surfacing. He lifts his hand to cradle her face. "Thanks, Missy. Drive safe, okay?"
He finally sits up so she can get up too, and stands, giving her a hand. He walks her to the door, then pauses, leaning on the doorway. "I'll talk to you tomorrow. Let you know what's going on."
Axel keeps his eyes lowered, receiving Jess' words, but his embarrassment was too much for him to look her in the eye just yet. He takes another bite of his steak, trying to ignore the whole thing. "Doesn't matter what you say," he mutters quietly. "They don't care."
The eyes at the other table glance up as they hear Jess talking, and they know that she had heard them. Their voices hush for a moment, but the looks keep coming. "... got a girl... why he's not behind bars... let people like that loose... maybe... she's his next victim."
Axel's jaw tightens and he forces himself to take a sip of his water. It wasn't often that the anger flashed in his eyes like it was right now.
Truth or Not
Seeing Dani come through the door Misty gives a wave.
"Heya Dani."
Listing to Carson and Dani talk Misty chimes in here and there though she couldnt help feeling a bit awkward. Not knowing how things were going to go herself she felt a bit out of place.
"Sleep well."
Misty bids as Danie makes her way to her room. Turning slightly She gives a smile at Carson and leans down to press her lips to his for a moment before withdrawing.
"I guess I should be heading home. I'm getting sleepy and if I dont go I wont make it home.."
Running a hand along side Carson's face for a moment Misty's grin widens. Looking into Carson's eyes she never grew tired of seeing them, and seeing the spark the layed beyond the confustion that maybe only she could could see.
"If you need anything just call ok?"
Sitting with Axel the dinner was nice as Jess cuts her steak and takes tiny bites. The talk is kept light but it comes more freely now and though there is some silence there is not as much as there was before.
Though feeling the mood shift just a little and seeing the look on Axel's face Jess could tell something was wrong. Her own ears pick up the distastfull talk from the booth along side them. Shaking her head she couldnt help but feel bad for Axel and be upset herself that other people had nothing better to do.
Leaning in a bit closer to Axel Jess keeps her voice low but loud enough the other people could hear without making a scene and making it any harder on him.
"I wouldnt worry about it Axel. Let the people talk they dont matter much. Some people just dont have anything better to do wtih there time but make up stuff about others before they even know if its true or not."
Turning her head a little Jess looks at the group of people and glares for a moment amost as if a warning. For now she would let them be but if they continues she wouldnt be so nice.
Real or paper
Carson closes his eyes, sighing deeply. He knew Misty was right. He just.... didn't like how out of control he felt.
Suddenly the door opens, and Carson can hear Dani's keys jingling. He doesn't get up though. He'd stay in this comfortable position as long as he could.
Dani sets her purse and keys down and wanders into the living room, seeing the light on. Spotting her brother lying on the couch, his head in Misty's lap though, she stops. "Sorry guys. Didn't mean to interrupt."
Carson props his eyes open, grinning wryly. "You didn't. My pillow is getting ready to go home."
"Oh." Dani chuckles and comes up to the back of the couch, looking down over Misty's shoulder at him. "I see you did the cooking tonight."
"Mm-hmm. We have a visitor. She's sleeping in my bed tonight."
Dani's eyebrows shoot up. "You better explain quickly before my mind wanders."
Carson smirks, though he still doesn't move or even roll over to see her. "Mackenzie decided to show up today. Her idea, not mine. Tomorrow someone will be coming to pick her up."
"Wow." Dani blinks. "That's... interesting." She shakes her head, seeing that her brother wasn't in much of a mood to share details. "Alright, well... I'm heading to bed. If you need something come morning let me know."
"A ride to work would be nice so the kid doesn't have to walk."
"Sure." Dani smiles. "I can do that." She straightens up and heads for the hallway. "Night, Carson. Good night, Misty."
Axel grins a little. "You mean without being covered in grease?" The humor twinkles in his eyes as they reach their table for two and are seated.
It doesn't take long before the salads are done and their meals have arrived, providing a very tasty supper. Axel slices off another piece of steak and nods with satisfaction. "Mine's good. How 'bout yours?"
While waiting for an answer, his eyes continue to drift the room as they had since they'd arrived. But his gaze repeatedly landed at a nearby table where two couples were sitting. One of the men looked familiar but Axel couldn't place him. He could very well have simply been a customer of the auto shop at some point. But something about the foursome bothered Axel.
Stealing another glance in their direction, he realizes that the four have their heads a little closer together, their voices having become hushed. But there was no mistaking the brief pointing, and the distasteful looks towards Axel and Jess' table. Axel's ears pick up, "...him... was told... convicted..."
Axel's stomach gives a little lurch, suddenly his steak not tasting quite as good. Turning his face away from the gossiping group, he rests his elbow on the table to rest the side of his head on his hand. His eyes drift downward, and he's sure Jess had heard as well. Color comes to his face, and for a moment, he wishes the floor would open up and swallow him. Rocky had been wrong. The gossip and rumors had started.
"Um... okay." Scott pauses too. "Thanks... for calling. Rick said I could call him too, so it looks like I'm covered. Not to mention the security cameras are working. Couldn't be safer."
Despite being safe though, no amount of security would cure loneliness. "Yeah, goodnight, Hope. See you soon."
"Right." Ryder nods as he busies himself finishing up supper to get it ready. "Oh," he calls over his shoulder. "Some guy left you a message today. It's on the answering machine."
He fiddles with the chicken dish for a moment. "You want real plates or paper?"
Nice
Giving a small chuckle as Mackenzie comes out in one of Carson big T-Shirts Misty gives her a small wave goodnight. Staying sitting on the couch till Carson comes back Misty finally leans her head aganst the back and turns to see him giving a tired smile.
"This one thing cant be easy because its just not an easy thing no matter how much you want to think it is."
Knowing this was hard for Carson Misty leans over just a little to take his hand in her own and interlock her fingers with his. She felt bad Carson had to deal with this but there was nothing that could be done but move forward the best they could.
"No matter what she is your daughter and while wanting to do whats best for her, its a very delikit situation to handle. You just have to keep moving forward. Things will work out for the good."
"...Cant go wrong with a stake house can ya? I mean there isnt much to mess up anyways."
Getting a nice warm feeling as Axel waits for her to get out of the car Jess wares a timid but brave smile at the new feeling.
Taking Axel's hand interlocking her fingers with his and staying a little close being in the new surroundings. Though keeping her guard up by habbit Jess stood proud to be standing hand in hand with Axel.
Entring the steak house a nice warm friendly feeling is presented making everything feel comfortable again and letting Jess to relax as they wait to be seated. Leaning over just a little Jess smiles at Axel now that she could see him in a better light.
"You look very nice tonight."
Giving her own timid laugh Hope is quiet as the akward silence hangs in the air for a few moments. She wasnt sure what else to say and certinly didnt want to just hang up on Scott.
"Ok, well I am happy your doing alright..."
Pausing again for a moment than starting up.
"..if you need anything you know my number. I"ll pick up anytime. Have a good night Scott."
Bending down to pet Henry Katie looks up at Ryder a grin forming at the corner of her mouth.
"Oh great now what you did your silly Cat. Now I am the enemy."
Straghting back up again Katie cant help but laugh at her own silliness before going back to the fridge to put her battle of water back.
"All right well thats see I think I am in the mood for something funny sp I'll go pick something while we wait for dinner to get done."

Traitor
Carson lifts an eyebrow and glances back over to Mackenzie. "Yeah... guess she is. Not surprised." Noticing that the girl is asleep, he relaxes just a little bit. "I'm going to be in so much trouble," he murmurs. Sighing wearily, he tightens his grip around Misty's hand. His eyes grow heavy and they're just about closed when he jerks his head, forcing himself to stay awake.
Shaking his head, he aims for the remote. "This is ridiculous. No point in keeping this on if half of us are dozing off. But I'm not going to fall asleep like this."
Mackenzie is jolted from her light sleep as Carson starts to move around, and she yawns sleepily.
"Come on," Carson coaxes. "There's an extra toothbrush in the bathroom you can use. And you can sleep in my bedroom, alright?"
Mackenzie stands up, still in a bit of a daze, and trots down the hall.
Carson takes a deep breath and stands up, clearing off the coffee table. Getting to the kitchen though, he realizes that he really didn't leave Mackenzie much to work with. Rolling his eyes at himself, he wanders down the hall to his bedroom, finding something more.
Back out in the living room again, he paces, his body so tired, but his mind so busy. "What am I going to do?" he mutters. "This whole thing is just.... not right."
The bathroom door can be heard, and Carson stops talking, turning around as Mackenzie reappears. In one of Carson's old t-shirts, it's long enough for a night shirt for her, and she gives him a sheepish grin. "Thanks."
Carson can't help a bit of a grin himself. "You're welcome."
Within minutes, Mackenzie is curled up under the blankets on Carson's bed with the light out. Carson ambles back to the living room, knowing that the couch would be his bed for the night. Flopping back down, he puts his feet up to lay on his side, resting his head in Misty's lap. "Why can't just one thing be easy?" he mumbles.
Axel grins at Jess' attention, finding it a peculiar but nice sensation. He shakes his head and puts the car in gear. "I haven't been waiting long. No need to apologize." Heading downtown, Axel drives to the east end, to an evening steakhouse.
"I've never been here," he admits as he parks. "But I hear the food is really good." Getting out, he waits for Jess, then holds out his hand to her, to walk her to the door.
"Oh." Scott lifts an eyebrow, thinking. "I guess... yeah... yeah, everything is okay I think. Quiet... really quiet. But... seeing as though Domino is my only company, I shouldn't expect anything else."
He forces something close to a dry laugh, but it doesn't come out very well. "Appreciate the thought though..."
"Good." Ryder gets up to check on the food. "Then someone other than me can die from my first attempt at cooking something other than beef."
He throws Katie a wry grin. "As far as the movie goes, I learned a long time ago to let the lady choose the movie. So I'm going to do just that. I cooked, so you get the movie."
Henry meows, wandering over to Katie to rub himself up against her legs.
Ryder looks over his shoulder at the cat. "Traitor."

Crash early
Getting situated at home Misty eats some pizza as the movie starts every once and a while stealing a glance at Mackenzie.
Finally being stuffed on the food Misty leans back on the couch and sitting next to Carson. It felt a little strange not cuddaling close to Carson but Misty new tonighgt it was best that way.
As the movie continues Misty cant help but laugh at some parts as the movie continues finally relaxing and enjoying every moment. Glancing over at Mackenzie Misty smiles as her eyes slowly start to close. Elbowing Carson a little she nods to the little girl.
"Looks like she is crashing the part early."
Coming out of the bathroom Jess puts a clip in her going to the window to look out for Axel. Seeing he was waiting Jess runs back into the bathroom fast strating out her black sheer shirt and brushing the wrinkles out of the nice blue jeans she had baught earlyer today.
Looking at her reflection for a moment Jess cant help but wonder what Axel saw in her. All she could see was a wounded battle scared person coming back from war. Thought the wounds were healing Jess couldnt help the doubt that was still there a little bit.
Giving a shake of her head Jess puts on her necklace and checks herself over one more time and puts just a little perfume on before exiting the bathroom and grabbing her nice leather jacket.
With in minutes Jess is outside and heading to Axel's car. Getting in and shutting the door she smiles at him for a moment and leaning over to give him a kiss on the cheek.
"Sorry I took so long."
Giving a smile though Scott couldnt see it Hope was happy to hear his voice and know he was ok.
"Sorry to be calling you so late and all Scott I just new tonight was going to be one of the first nights home for you.."
Leaning back in her chair a little Hope looks out into the darkend lobby. Everyone had gone home now and the quiet was almost defning. Hope herself was a little happy to have Scott's breathing on the other end of the phone.
"..so I just wanted to call and see how you were doing and if you needed anything before I headed home."
Going over to the fridge Katie pulls a bottle of flavor water out and takes a swig leaning against the counter for a moment.
"Yeah I should be staying home unless someone calls me. I dont have anything going on that I know of."
Pushing off the counter Katie comes over to the table and slumps down into one of the chairs. The day had been long but not that long and yet she was a bit tired. Though trying to push it aside Katie wairs a smile on her face.
"If you want you can pick out a movie we can watch with dinner."
Pretending perfection
Mackenzie looks up quickly as Misty enters the kitchen, and a smile comes to her face. She already liked her father's girlfriend.
"Well, special pizza we do have," Carson greets, wrapping an arm around Misty's waist. "Lucky for us we don't have to walk or else it would get cold on the way home."
"You don't have a car?" Mackenzie questions.
"Nope." Carson shakes his head. "Not at the moment."
Hearing the movies Misty has, Mackenzie grins. "I've wanted to see those. They look really funny."
A timer dings, breaking up the conversation, and Carson lets Misty go so he can check on the pizza. "Lookin' good, if I do say so myself," he comments wryly. Getting the pizza in a box only takes a couple minutes, and soon the three are walking out the front door, Carson locking up for the night. The air is cool, but not cold, the light turning dim as evening descends.
Heading for Misty's car, Carson spots a parked vehicle across the street. It had been there three hours ago when he'd looked out the window, and there was still someone behind the wheel.
Getting Mackenzie in the backseat with the pizza, Carson slides into the passenger side, going for his seatbelt. "Heather's eyes," he mutters under his breath. "I hope you don't get dragged into this."
The ride to Carson and Dani's apartment is a quiet one, Mackenzie remaining fairly silent, focusing more on watching her dad than anything else. Once they arrived, it was in and up the stairs and into the apartment.
Mackenzie looks around, taking it all in. Wandering into the living room, she spots a picture frame and makes a beeline for it. There was Carson and Misty, an older picture of a couple, then a young blonde woman. "Is this Dani?"
Carson looks from the kitchen and nods. "Yeah."
"Who are these other people?"
Carson grabs a couple glasses, and nods to the fridge where Misty can get their drinks. He wanders to the end table beside the couch, looking down at the picture frame that was Dani's from years ago. "That would be your grandparents, kid."
Mackenzie studies the faces. "Where are they?"
"They're dead." Carson moves around to set things down on the coffee table, not letting the conversation continue. "Alright, pick the movie we're gonna watch first."
With all three sitting down, Carson makes a point of praying for the food, and when he's finished, Mackenzie eyes him skeptically. "Bad guys don't usually pray," she comments.
Carson quirks an eyebrow and starts divvying out the pizza. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I don't know. But I think Heather was wrong about you." She lets her statement end the brief encounter, plopping down to take her plate and timidly take her first bite of pizza.
It isn't long before all three are settled on the couch in front of the television, laughing at the movie, and Mackenzie thoroughly enjoying the meal.
Finished eating, Carson leans back, in between Misty and Mackenzie. He was glad for the movie. While things with Mackenzie weren't going horribly, he still was uncomfortable and extremely awkward. The droning television made it easy not to talk much.
Reaching down, he finds Misty's hand, a wry grin surfacing that only she could see. This was probably the first time they hadn't cuddled up together while watching a movie. Feeling movement on his other side, he looks down quickly to find that Mackenzie had finished eating as well, and was now contentedly sitting back with her head resting on his shoulder.
He swallows hard, trying to keep the rampant thoughts out of his mind. What was he doing? What would happen now? He couldn't have been right to do this. But he wouldn't have wanted her to spend the night in some strange facility. But....
A deep sigh follows. He wished he could talk to Misty about all of this right now, but at the moment, they would just have to watch the movie, laugh and pretend for a brief moment of time that everything was perfect.
Getting out of the shower, Axel discovers he has a message waiting for him. Hearing Jess' voice, he grins a little. It was as if within the last week, the door to communication had swung wide open. He didn't mind talking to her as much, and she had really opened up. It was new. It was fun. It felt good.
Knowing he need not call her back, Axel unpacks a few more things, finding his good black jeans and his white collared shirt. Tucking it in, he finds his belt and finishes up. With the top button undone on his shirt, someone might be able to just see that he still wore his dogtags. But the significance remained with him alone.
Slapping on some cologne and slipping into his black boots, Axel grabs his keys and is out the door. He'd left a message for Darrel earlier, asking to meet with him in the morning. Tonight though, he wasn't going to worry about it.
Fifteen minutes later, he's pulling into the parking lot at Jess' apartment to pick her up. He doesn't honk the horn - he didn't want to rush her.
Scott almost jumps out of his skin as the phone rings. Domino flies off his lap, landing on her feet on the floor and looking back at him, bewildered. He blinks, realizing that he'd been in his own little world, and it took him a moment to distinguish the sound.
Grabbing the cell phone, he looks at the number. Odd. She never called him. He answers it though, wondering what was up. "Hello... Hope?"
Ryder looks up and grins as Katie joins him in the kitchen. "A ride to work sounds great, though I'm not convinced Reese likes my boredom running rampant around the TJY building. I think he's probably been quite satisfied to leave me out of the picture and out of his hair."
Tossing the paper aside, he cocks his head. "Staying home for supper?" he asks hopefully. "If you don't, Henry will have a mighty fine meal."

Calling
Standing in the door way for at least 15 minutes Misty watchs Carson and Machenzie interact. It braught a small smile to her face though a strange feeling still stirred. It was a intresting interaction to see with Carson and it did bring a nice warm feeling.
Continuing to watch Misty stays silent just taking in the sight for a long moment. The smile slowly creeping on her face. Finally standing a little bit straghter Misty clears her throat.
"You know I hurd there was going to be some special pizza made tonight so I thought I'd swing by and see what was gong on. I have to keep you and your dad out of trouble eh Squirt!"
Misty gives a little wink to Mackenzie as she comes into the kitchen more and wraps her arms over Carson's neck giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
"I also got a few movies to I thought maybe we could have a little camp out in the living room or something. I got, Over the Hedge, and Madagascar. I hope you havent seem them yet!"
Streching out on her bed Jess just lays there for a moment. It had been nice to be away, but it was nice to be home too.
Though she was still a bit jumpy she was nothing like she was before and she had a new bright spot. Not only had she gotten over her fear and did something new, but she had for something alse that made her feel good, and like she had a reason again.
Just thinking about Axel made Jess smile and gave her a flutter. Manuvering just a little she pulls her cell from her pocket and holds it for a moment before dialing. Getting Axel's voice mail Jess just lets the message play as she smile. Finally after the beep the smile showing in her voice Jess leave a short message.
"Hey you, I was just calling because...well I didnt have a reson other than I wanted to call. Well I guess I wont leave a long message that is about nothing so I will just see you tonight. I'll try to be on time, but I never really dressed up before so it might take me a little bit, but I will try not to make you wait. Anyways I'll see you than."
Hanging up the phone Jess sits up on the bed and thinks for a moment before going to her closet to see what she had for tonight. She wasnt sure where Axel and herself were going but for once she just wanted to get dressed up a tade since she never had for a good honest reason before.
Picking up her work phone Hope dials Scott's number. She had seen him this afternoon but she new tonight would be one of his first nights home again and she wanted to see how he was doing not to mention he might be a little lonly so talking to him before she left work would do him some good maybe. As the phone rings Hope waits wondering if Scott would even answer.
Coming through the door Katie gets a wiff of something that sure does smell good. Knowing the only one probley home was Ryder she cant help the smile the spreads on her lips.
"Its would seem the made has made something for dinner eh Henry? Sure does smell mighty fine."
Going into the kitchen and seeing Ryder sitting at the table Katie chuckles. She liked having someone alse around. It was always nice to have something to fiscally talk to.
"How was your day? Tomarrow if you like I have some work I am gonna need help with and you can hope a ride to work with me."
Aunt
Axel sets down his bag and takes a look around the dim apartment. A quick call had confirmed that it was still open - no one had even known he'd moved out yet. He wasn't sure yet if he would still be staying... He'd have to talk to Darrel about it. But in the meantime, he had enough money for another month's rent.
A knock at the door makes him spin around. "Yeah?"
The door opens slowly and Rocky enters a little hesitantly. "Hey, Ax."
Axel forces a solemn smile. "Hey."
Rocky stands awkwardly for a moment, resting his hands in his jeans pockets. "Happened to drive by and saw your car so... figured I'd stop and say hi."
"Thanks. I just walked in the door."
"Oh..." Rocky pauses again. "Um... I got your fish back at my place. So whenever you're read for them again... I kept them alive at least."
Axel gives him a wry grin. "I'm sure they appreciate it. I'll come pick them up as soon as I know if I'm staying."
"You mean you still might leave?"
"No, I mean, I don't know if I can still stay here if I don't have a job in the garage."
"Oh." Rocky purses his lips. "Yeah... well... I think if you tell Darrel the same story you told me, it'll be fine."
"Sure. But I still got a record." Axel shakes his head. "Innocent or not, the record is what counts to most people. So... I can understand him not wanting to get into trouble."
Rocky shrugs. "Never know what'll happen." He hesitates again, not used to an awkwardness between them. "So um... Jess got home too?"
"Yeah. She should be at her place right about now. We followed each other back here."
"Ah. Maybe... she'd like someone to drop by later?"
"Sure she wouldn't mind. She and I are going out to supper tonight though, so she won't be around the whole evening."
"Oh. Well maybe we can all get together. Go out and get pizza or something with the gang."
Axel is starting to unpack his bag, and he looks up, shaking his head a little. "Uh, no... tonight it's just Jess and me. I'm gonna take her somewhere nice."
"Oh." Rocky stops, studying Axel's eyes for a moment, his own flickering with question. "You two... dating?"
A grin breaks free again, and Axel can feel a little bit of heat come to his face. "You could say that." He nods, setting some of his clothes out on his chair.
"Oh." Rocky pushes aside the feelings he didn't want to show. Taking one last look around, he turns for the door once more. "Well... guess I'll leave you at it. Let me know what happens... the others want to get together here soon to talk... I think it would be good."
"Yeah. We will." Axel wanders to the door, seeing him out. He notices the slight change in Rocky's demeanor, and isn't sure if it had to do with Jess or Cryptic, but he senses it's the first. "I'll call you."
"Sounds good." Rocky calls over his shoulder as he makes his way down the stairs. "Tell Jess hi."
"Will do."
Carson finishes washing another load of dishes, and wipes his hands on his apron. Seeing Aerith, he glances out to the dining area and takes note that for now, it was empty.
"Let's close up early for tonight," he suggests. "It was a busy day, so it won't hurt us much. I'll clean up and take care of the kid, then Misty's coming later." He nods his thanks to Aerith. Without her, the day would have been a disaster. "I'll see you tomorrow morning."
It isn't long before the restaurant is quiet. Carson leaves Mackenzie be in the kitchen, going with a tray to clean up some of the tables, then mop the floor. After a short while of working, he feels someone's eyes watching him. Looking up from his mopping, he spies Mackenzie who had come around the counter. He leans on his mop for a moment and cocks his head. "Feel better?"
Mackenzie nods and yawns. "Yeah. I didn't know I was that tired." She grins and holds up the envelope Aerith had left for her. "Guess it was worth it though, huh?"
Carson gives her a wry grin and goes back to his work. "Help doesn't always pay off," he comments.
Mackenzie continues to watch him, finally stepping closer. "Can I do something?"
Carson is used to cleaning up himself, and isn't quite sure what to do with the girl. Shrugging, he looks around. "You can... get a wet towel from the kitchen and clean off the counter if you want."
"Okay." Mackenzie nods and turns around to skip back around to the kitchen.
For the next half hour, work is done in silence. Carson remains tucked away in his own safe world, while Mackenzie's eyes stayed glued to him. She takes the initiative to help clean up where she can, but finally winds up just sitting in one of the booths and waiting, swinging her legs with a little bit of boredom.
Eventually, the floor is cleaned up, tables are cleared and chairs are put up. Carson's stomach growls, reminding him that he hadn't had anything to eat all day. Despite his shot nerves, he was still hungry. He takes off his apron and sighs, looking around the kitchen for a moment. One more job to do.
Reaching for the ingredients though, he pauses. He'd left the girl out in the booth. What was he supposed to do with her though?
Sighing, he continues his final task. "Hey, Mac, come here."
Mackenzie's head shoots up, a grin forming at the new nickname. Trotting to the kitchen, she pushes the door open. "Yeah?"
"What do you like on your pizza?"
"Um... I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know? You like cheese, right? Pepperoni? Mushrooms?"
Mackenzie shrugs lamely. "I... don't know."
Carson stops his work and turns to look at her, his eyebrows raised. "You have had pizza before, right?"
Mackenzie slowly shakes her head. "Mama never made it and we never ate out. And the orphanage never has it."
Carson couldn't believe it, and for a moment, he just blinks. "Well... then I guess you're in for a treat." Grabbing a bunch of items from the refrigerator, he kicks the door shut. "Come here."
Mackenzie goes to the counter, eying the toppings skeptically.
Carson slices a piece of pepperoni. "Here. Try that."
Mackenzie timidly takes as bite, then smiles and nods. "I like that."
"You ought to. It's my favorite topping." Though Mackenzie had tasted what made up pizza toppings before, Carson lets her try all of them, getting the thumbs up on peppers and mushrooms, but grimaces at onions and olives.
"Alright. While I get the sauce ready, you work this dough."
Mackenzie stares at the lump of dough, and reaches for it, but has just a bit of trouble.
Carson quirks an eyebrow, then turns around to grab a chair. In one motion, he's picked Mackenzie up and set her on the chair, making her much taller.
She giggles and leans over to copy what she'd seen him do with the dough. Carson mixes and stirs up the sauce, turning on the radio in the meantime to some upbeat music that got Mackenzie to humming.
Coming back to the counter, he holds out the wooden spoon with some sauce on it. "Tell me what you think."
Mackenzie hesitates, but tries it, then smiles. "Mmm... that tastes good."
"Of course it does. Because I have a secret ingredient."
"What is it?"
"Well if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret, now would it?"
Mackenzie rolls her eyes. "Will you tell me someday?"
"Maybe." As Carson turns around, his thoughts come to a screeching halt. Maybe? He'd said maybe? What was that supposed to mean? That he'd be seeing more of her? Was he giving her false hopes tonight? Was he just putting himself through something he'd regret? He shakes his head. Tonight, he wasn't going to think about how much trouble he was getting into.
Once the dough is ready, Carson start to work it with his hands instead of using a rolling pin. Mackenzie's eyes widen as he tosses it up in the air and catches it. "Where did you learn that?"
"Herb." Carson grins as the crust becomes just wide and thin enough for the large pizza. "He's the owner... is... was..." He stops for a moment. "He got me this job here."
"Oh." Mackenzie chews on a raw slice of green pepper. "Have you been here a long time?"
"A while." Carson finishes up the pizza and puts it in the oven, setting the timer. Joining Mackenzie at the table, he grins a little and takes a towel to wipe some flower off her nose.
Mackenzie scrunches up her nose an giggles. "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"So... what happens now?"
"We wait." Carson leans back against the counter, tipping his hat back and crossing his arms. "Misty's going to come and pick us up and then we're heading to my place."
Mackenzie's eyes light up. "Really?"
"Yes, really." Carson's voice remains matter-of-fact, not wanting her to get too excited.
"Does Misty live with you?"
"Nooo," Carson shakes his head. "Of course not. But that doesn't mean she can't come over for supper, does it?"
"No." Mackenzie's eyes spark with mischief. "But she did say she loves you."
"What?" Carson's eyes widen. "She did not."
"Yes she did!" Mackenzie throws her arms up. "I heard her when she was here earlier after you guys were kissing."
Carson quirks one eyebrow and gives her a look. "So, you were spying, eh?"
"I wasn't spying." Mackenzie grows sheepish. "But I did hear her say "I love you" when she left."
Carson's eyes narrow. "Well I didn't hear her say that."
"You think it's not true?"
"I..." Carson opens his mouth, then shakes his head. "I don't really think this is a conversation you and I should be having." While cool on the outside, on the inside he was racking his brain. Had Misty really said that? He remembered hearing her say something as she left and he'd thought that's what she'd said, but then had dismissed it as his imagination. But apparently he hadn't been mistaken.
He shakes his head again, moving on. "At any rate, in the morning, you'll get to meet my sister. I live with her."
Mackenzie's eyes widen even more as she realizes what that means. "I have an aunt?"
"That's usually how it works."
"What's her name?"
"Dani."
"That sounds like a boy's name."
"It's short for Danielle."
"Ohhh." Mackenzie stops in thought. "Is she from Australia too?"
"Yeah... but she's been here a long time...." Carson grows quiet for a moment, not wanting to think about those things. Finally he turns around and busies himself with cleaning up again, wondering if he'd really been talking too much. But he had to do something to pass the time before Misty showed up.
Kyle's eyes shoot up at Alice's challenge, and a grin spreads. "Well I owe you, so it has to be my treat, so I better beat you." Breaking into a sprint, he passes Alice, whirling around to run backward. "Unless you have more money than me.... then you can buy."
A flying toy hits Scott in the head and he jumps, startled from his light sleep. He looks down at Domino who was still chewing on her rubber toy.
She looks up at him and wiggles with excitement, finally abandoning her play to jump up on the couch with him. He spreads his legs so she can crawl up onto his chest, and he gives her some loving. "Yeah, I'm not the best company in the world am I, hmm?"
He kisses her head, his fingers running down her soft fur. "But at least we're home, right?" Sure, at least they were home... in the quiet... very quiet... alone...
Ryder opens the oven door to check on his concoction and shrugs, closing it again. Well, it smelled good to him. If he ate it and died, he'd know he did something wrong.
Sighing, he looks around the kitchen. He'd already cleaned up everything else... he didn't want to leave things a mess... not when he was still begging room and board off Katie and Laura. Maybe he should stay like Laura suggested... moving upstairs he might feel a little more at home. But would it look strange to share a house with two women? At least he'd have the upstairs - that made a difference.
Shaking his head, he goes and flops down at the table, grabbing a fairly recent newspaper. He might be employed by TJY, but he certainly had a lot of time on his hands at the moment. Maybe there was help wanted somewhere that he would fit in.

The L word
Returning Carson kiss Misty lets it last as long as she can knowing though Carson needed to get back to work. Giving him arm a gentle squeeze she lets him turn back to his work.
"Oh course I will keep you in line. Thats my fav pass time you know."
Leaning aganst the table for a moment Misty looks down at her own hands before she looks back up at Carson giving him a small nod.
"Dont worry I wont let anyone know about Mackenzie untill your ready to tell anyone."
Staying around with Carson for just a little while longer Misty enjoys the time out of the office and spending a little more time with Carson. Finally though she knows it is time to get back and stands from the table placing her glass in the sink. Aiming for the door she stops and turns back to look at Carson.
"I'll call when I am leaving work, just plan on me coming to pick you two up. That way you dont have to walk. I love ya, and see you tonight."
Turning and heading out of the kitchen Misty than relizes what words had slipped out of her mouth. Stoping for a moment her own eyes go wide but it was to late now she couldnt take them bad or hide that she didnt say them. Continuing her rout she just heads out of Mom and Pop's and heads back to work.
Giving a little shrugs Alice smiles. She did have a nack of saying things at the right time but it had always been like that for a while now.
"I guess I just let god work throuh me and make sure I am will to listen and relay."
Continuing to laugh as they pass the others Alice gives a shake of her head. She liked all the jokes and she liked listing to everyones chatter. It put a smile on her face and seeing the love put a sad, but warm fludder in her heart as memorices came back to her.
Glancing over her shoulder and seeing Kyle was full of energy waiting to come out Alice turns to walk backwards while talking to him.
"So...first one to the faires wheel buys ice cream for eachother!!! Sugar..good yes yes..."
Keeping enthuseasm in her voice Alice gives a slight bounce in her walk as she turns ready to run but waits to make sure Kyle starts with her.
Counting out her tips Aerith buts at least 30.00 aside in a small envilope writting on the top.
Mackenzie, thanks for all the help today.
Licking it shut Aerith quietly enters the kitchen and places the small backages next to the sleeping child so when she was to wake she would see it.
Aerith had been thankful for the help even if alot of people would think it wasnt much. Not having Mable around sure made her relize how much there was to do, though she didnt mind.

A safe place
Carson takes a deep breath an nods, bringing his free hand over to Misty's. "Yeah... I know. I just... I don't know what the right thing is. I keep asking God and I still don't know. It seems so... gray." He shakes his head.
"Take your time tonight, if you have to work late. We'll be here until closing anyway. Just give me a call when you're getting off, so I know whether to have you come here or straight to my place."
Looking Misty in the eye, his own gaze shows all of his mixed emotions, a window to the turmoil in his heart. The thought of being a father was terrifying. The thought of spending time with Mackenzie was even more frightening. And he wasn't even sure why.
"Thanks, Misty." He pulls her into a hug. "Don't know what I'd do without you."
Despite the things happening around them, a spark manages to enter Carson's eye, and he withdraws to see Misty's face. "Well... I guess I do. I'd wallow in my misery in some faroff place, and get myself in a whole heap of trouble... that's what I'd do. But instead, I got you to keep me in line."
His arm still around her waist, he tightens his grip. "Just make sure you keep on keeping me in line, ay?" Giving her a sly grin, he leans in for a good long kiss. "That ought to last you until tonight."
He would have teased more, had he not had to turn back to his cooking. "Keep this thing with Mackenzie under your hat for a while, will you? I don't want to deal with the gossip just yet."
Letting her go, Carson gets his attention back to the stove, trying to just focus on his work at least for a few minutes before they had unhappy customers. The last thing he needed right now was to screw up at work. There was a whole lot more riding on his success now than before.
A small smile becomes visible on Mackenzie's face as her eyes happen to catch Carson and Misty kissing in the kitchen. She looks away though, continuing to help Aerith.
Taking Alice's cell phone, he gives her a rueful grin as she roughs up his hair. "Mm, water balloon fight, huh? Now that sounds like an adventure." His eyes widen a little as he thinks of the prospect, a quirky smile forming. "It could be a surprise..." Shaking his head, he gives a little chuckle, dismissing the idea as probably too annoying for the others.
Looking back at the phone, he gives a bit of a sigh, and swings his head around to look at Alice. "How come you always know what to say?"
Leaning back again, he dials a familiar number. He'd emailed his sister yesterday... talked with Phil for a minute the day before... but this time it would be a friend.
As he waits, he gives Alice a nod. "Yeah, if you got any tylenol, I'll take it. Chloe has been giving me hers but I've about run her out of her supply.
Reaching the answering machine, Kyle waits. He had expected that. Everyone would be at work this time of day. But he didn't want to bother anyone. He just wanted to say hi, and the shorter the better probably, for the moment.
Hearing the beep, Kyle leaves a message. "Hey, KT, what up? It's your bouncing, bungling, blundering, boisterous friend, calling from the road. Well... not exactly the road at the moment - we're stopped at a lovely lake for a few hours. Just wanted to say hi I guess. Miss you guys. Jen said there was a JetStream gig here soon. Looks like you'll have to keep everyone in line instead of me... since I always did such a good job."
Kyle pauses, biting his lip. It felt strange, knowing he wouldn't be there. "Um... anyway... hope you're good and... I'll talk to ya soon."
He flips the phone shut and hands it back to Alice, his eyes showing his gratefulness. "Thanks."
As she gets up and offers her hand, suggesting a spontaneous venture, he can't help a laugh. "Alright, you win." Taking her hand, he pulls himself up, stuffing the last of his sandwich in his mouth. "Lead the way, oh adventurous one."
Following Alice past the others, Kyle gives them a short wave. "We're taking a hike. Sticking around for a while?"
"Yeah." Hunter nods. "Some of us are gonna take a bike ride into town for a few things."
Chloe grins. "While Jordan and Myla get the site to themselves."
"Ooooh," Kyle teases. "What? Time in the front of the bus doesn't count?"
Jordan is lying down on a blanket and shakes his head. "Not when you're going sixty miles an hour and have to keep both hands on the wheel, it doesn't."
Myla leans over him, smiling. "You mean, not when you can't have your arms around me."
As they kiss, Blake throws up his arms. "Time to move out! No gawkers! Move along, folks, move along."
Myla and Jordan laugh, and she sits up, shaking her head. "You guys are all a bunch of silly gooses, you know that?"
Shawn's eyes widen. "Gooses? Um..."
Myla starts laughing even more. "Geese?"
Kyle shakes his head, grinning, then turns back to Alice. "Let's leave this gaggle to their geesing." Heading away from the group, Kyle walks a little slower than normal, his eyes drifting every whichway, his hands needing to fidget with anything as he walks, proving his energy was at a high level but wasn't being spent. "I am having fun," he comments. "I'm still glad I came and got away from everything else... Just taking a little more getting used to than I thought maybe. I do enjoy the routines, and hanging out with this bunch really is a blast... I wouldn't want them to think I was complaining."
Ryder's eyes stay glued to the television while he continues to do push-ups. He'd lost count, but really didn't care. He was just exercising for something to do anyway. The food on the tv was making his mouth water though. He'd been watching this station for the last couple hours, and was tempted to try out one of the more practical dishes, just to keep himself from getting bored.
He'd already called Reese a while ago, but had been told there really wasn't much for him to do around the office. He'd taken the hint and had let things be. He knew Katie had offered to give him something to do, but he didn't really want to bother her. She had enough to worry about without having to come get him and show him the ropes.
The ringing phone startles him, but he keeps doing his push-ups, letting the answering machine take over. Hearing a man's voice, he quirks his eyebrow and listens. Whoever it was seemed an interesting guy... a close friend maybe? What on earth was JetStream? Oh well... it wasn't any of his business.
After a few more minutes, Ryder finally gets up off the floor and wanders to the kitchen, starting to poke around in the cupboards and refrigerator. Why not? He shrugs. It was better than going out and drinking again. Besides, he really wanted to avoid questions about his black eye for now.
Henry's meowing makes him look down. "Well there, tiger. Where have you been all day?"
Henry weaves around his legs, purring loudly.
"Think I ought to fix the two ladies supper? With my luck, they'll be going out with their guys tonight. But... at least I'll have had a good meal, ay? And then they can have the leftovers. Gotta earn my keep somehow."
Nodding with satisfaction, Ryder keeps searching until he thinks he's found enough ingredients to make the chicken.
The restaurant has grown a little quieter, but the sounds of chatter and clanging silverware still fills Mom and Pop's. Carson leans back against the counter, totally exhausted. Aerith had been a trooper all day long, but even with her there, she'd been busy with tables almost the entire time, and Carson had manned the kitchen once more. Now he knew why Herb had needed his help. He wondered though, if once he got going, if he'd be able to settle into a routine. Mom and Pop's still wasn't a big restaurant, and as far as he was concerned, it could stay that way. They had a good base of consistent customers that liked the homey atmosphere. It wasn't broken, so it shouldn't be fixed.
Giving a deep sigh, Carson finishes his glass of water, and knows he needs to get the plates for table eight finished. Aerith could handle the deserts for table five.
Wandering to the stove once more though, his eyes glance to the little table in the corner of the kitchen. Mackenzie had long since conked out from her own exhaustion. Her arms were folded on the table, acting as a pillow for her head. She'd been that way for half an hour already, despite all the noise. How tired she must have been.
Carson swallows hard, and finds himself nearing her, just watching her steady breathing. What was the reason this child had been brought into his life? Was it just chance, and it would pass quickly without affecting the future? Or was there something bigger here... something God had in mind? Carson didn't have a clue.
Reaching down, he gently tucks a strand of Mackenzie's unruly blonde hair behind her ear. She stirs, and he withdraws quickly, but she doesn't wake. Was he doing the right thing by taking her home? It was too late now. But what would the consequences be?
Scott pulls his knees up to his chest as he sits on his couch, listening to Domino play around with one of her toys. His eyes aim towards the droning television, but he doesn't really focus on the picture. He felt lonely tonight. Without the fear to invade his mind, all that was left was a bit of emptiness.
Closing his eyes, he leans back in the corner of the couch, ignoring the meal that he'd warmed up in the microwave. He takes himself to a happier place... a warmer place. The park... Domino... sunshine... Hope. It was a safe place in his mind, and one that he visited often.
